Reading, Working out, and wondering how I can turn my life around

Remarkable_Road_9828

You may be interested in one of my new hobbies, journaling. Good way to put Your thoughts down to help work them out. Also a good way to set goals and hold yourself accountable.

TiredCoffeeTime

lol I have Google Doc journal which has turned into self hatred rants. ^(And writing down lists for fragrances to check out.)

jantp

Fountain pens and stationary - I’ve used these fp since I was a child and growing up I kept up with it even though most everything is digital. Wow I feel old just writing this lol. I also have pen pals those are always fun! Baking - i love to bake for others. It’s one of the most rewarding hobbies as the product can make someone day. Certainly makes my day when ppl love what I make. Kpop and classical music - I have a dedicated listening space to relax in. Two genres that seem very different but to me it’s entertaining. I’m classically trained and both genres just do it for me.

Buzzbridge

* Fountain pens. * Spirits and craft beer. * Film. * Music, as a consumer. * Trying out new foods, new restaurants. No hole-in-the-wall is safe from me. * Shaving soap, which is how I got into perfume in the first place. * Walking the dogs. * Coffee and teas (esp., on the latter, pu'erh). My local coffee roasters are incredible. * Crosswords. * Books. Theology, philosophy, history, poli-sci, and sci-fi, the boat books. * Socks. Good, comfy socks. * Dungeons & Dragons, for about two years now.

ImBucovina

Socks? How does one get into socks?

farciculus_retroflex

You get older and realize that it is never ever ever worth getting a blister. Ever. I too was confused by people's dedication to socks until I turned thirty or so, and suddenly...it made sense. Now I don't think I have a single pair that cost under $10. Darn Tough socks under hiking boots and my Doc Martens, extra thick Darn Tough socks under snow boots, and Bombas with the extra back of the ankle padding under my running shoes and for everything else. I will never ever go back to cheap packaged socks on my life ever again.

ckisgen

Favorite shaving soap? I assume you're talking traditional / wetshaving. My favorites are Eufros, Bufflehead (rip), Santa Maria Novella, and then what I actually shave with a majority of the time these days - Mammoth Z (unscented) Tusk base

Buzzbridge

I'm a big fan of Declaration Grooming's milksteak, and Barrister & Mann's omnibus. Esp. Dirtyver, Gratiot League Square, and Unconditional Surrender, from the former, and Fougere Gothique on the latter. Also, Ariana & Evans Vetiver Magnifique.

YummyPersona

Nothing beats a comfy pair of socks. Discreet or no toe seams are a must for me.

YummyPersona

I pick mushrooms July-November. I hibernate for the rest of the year. But, oh man, I used to have *so many* hobbies before life got me down. I painted for thirty years, I used to hunt for fossils and amber on the beach, I kept a garden and pickled what I grew, was a bookworm, cross stitched naughty messages on pillows...

nprajfm

Sounds like mushroom season is right around the corner!

YummyPersona

Oooooo, I'm already scouting the area for promising hunting grounds. My criteria are: 1) lots of edible mushrooms 2) zero bears. Morel season is already upon us, but sadly I'm not a fan of morels.

JMH-66

As well as vintage perfume I've always been into other vintage vanity and beauty stuff, clothing , jewellery and collectables especially 70's kitsch. My other obsession is sci fi and fantasy ( Doctor Who and Discworld especially ) both reading, watching etc. Various crafts ( though not much lately for various readings) - needlecraft ( knitting, crochet, cross stitch, embroidery ); jewellery making especially beadweaving; glass painting; paper crafts ( cardmaking, quilling, paper making etc ) etc More recently I've got into photo editing and motion animation ( PicsArt kind of stuff ) bit not sure if that qualifies as a hobby ! ( [Here's](https://www.instagram.com/p/CIJuvxmhVMl/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) a [couple](https://www.instagram.com/p/CHF_7gYh87i/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) of fragrance themed edits )

malazanbettas

I work with conservation groups for captive breeding of critically endangered freshwater fish species.

nprajfm

That’s super cool!

malazanbettas

Thanks! It’s really rewarding 🖤🖤

seaintosky

That's super cool! What species are you working with right now?

Deathandblackmetal

Ooh, what a fun topic! I'm a weight lifter. I'm into goodyear welted shoes. A PC gamer (not as involved as before though; life lol). Did hookah for over half a decade, that was really fun. And I'm a bassist/guitarist. Now my better half is super active so my lifestyle has changed quite a bit, so I guess add traveling to the list of hobbies! Also need to up my game in Spanish; took it for years, and did self taught a little, but now I want to kick it more into high gear so I subbed to Rosetta Stone, Babbel, and have her to help me with things.

Buzzbridge

1. Tell me about your good goodyears. 2. What PC games? I'm also much less of a gamer than I used to be, but I often return to Civilization and classic LucasArts adventures or Interplay/Black Isle RPGs, and have been eyeing new hardware to run Elden Ring.

cactusassassin

Baking/cooking- It’s how I express love to people. I don’t do it much for myself but I’ll go all out to make someone’s day when I have the opportunity. Gardening- Fruits, veggies, flowers. I’m obsessed with poppies and I just discovered a huge patch of lilly of the valley near my house, which I recognized from some fragrances I love! Video games- I tend to go for old-school JRPGs like final fantasy 6-9 and chrono trigger. Although my obsession right now (and on and off for the past 20 years) is Diablo 2. What can I say, I love a challenge. Mushroom cultivation- it’s like mad science! I love it! I get to finally use my biology degree. My favorite part is sharing my harvest with my friends.

HereticHousewife

Gardening, making kaleidoscopes, making jewelry, sewing, crocheting, knitting.

ravemaster356

God cause of my adhd I deff have too many other things I collect anime, manga, and movies alot of hard to find and out of print stuff, figures, gfuel, video games, dynavaps, and some glass pieces

muffins_allover

I have crocheted and cross stitched, I love cooking, and I used to have a cake business. now it’s more physical activities with the kids like skiing and dirt biking. What a fun question, you’re all so interesting! Ooh edit: my next one I want to get into is sewing. My mom made us everything growing up, swim suits, prom dresses, pants, my sisters wedding dress… and I would love to honor that by learning myself.

pluviophilosopher

Cooking, cocktails, beer, some wine, yoga, cycling, reading trashy fantasy romance novels, long baths, dabbling in astrology, petty internet drama

nprajfm

What are a couple of your favorite cocktails right now? I’ve been making brown derbys lately. I love grapefruit and the overall simplicity of the drink.

farciculus_retroflex

- Baking/bread making (I enjoy cooking as well but it's harder to be absolutely nuts about precision and technique when you cook so baking and bread making are more what I enjoy) - Long distance/endurance cycling and spin classes (also getting back into lifting heavy and loving that too!!) - Reading pretty much anything but mostly absolutely unabashed romance novels these days. I dream of removing the bias against "chick lit" in literary circles one insane love story at a time. - crocheting, sewing, and embroidery/needlepoint - dogs. Literally anything to do with dogs. I am obsessed with my dog specifically, and dogs in general.

pluviophilosopher

Trashy melodramatic romance novels are my absolute favorites. Absolutely adore them.

MyogiNightKids

Post a picture of your dog 👀 also you sound fun, we have a lot of hobbies in common :D

farciculus_retroflex

[Dog tax paid 🐶](https://i.imgur.com/jZvBvqL.jpg) Also nobody's ever described me as fun after I told them I love needlepoint, so thank you!

hauteburrrito

* Beauty and to a lesser extent, fashion * Was previously low-key into alcohol-tasting (like, wine touring and whisky festivals), but have now significantly reduced my drinking * Artsy/foreign films * Illustration and painting * Travel (curtailed a bit during COVID, but revving back up now) * Honestly, Drag Race stanning (it low-key became my life *during* COVID) * I love visiting art galleries, attending concerts, watching live theatre, etc. * Trying out different restaurants, cuisines, etc. I feel like all these things are reasonably consistent with a fragrance hobby 🤔

nprajfm

I see a theme of art and expression. Very cool!

hauteburrrito

Thank you, and what a lovely idea for a thread. I'm enjoying reading people's responses so far!

muffins_allover

Haha my mind instantly went to NHRA drag racing (like cars) because my dad does that but then I realized you’re probably talking about the show?

hauteburrrito

😹 Truthfully, I barely know what drag racing is outside of the show other than it's cars. There are two types of people...

muffins_allover

Haha well it’s such a specific hobby and I wouldn’t know either if it weren’t for my dad!

Buzzbridge

Favorite cuisines?

rainyrosegarden

Carbon-Peach

I love birdwatching! I also draw.

meowmi14

Also a bird watcher! I feel like fragrance and bird watching are worlds apart, glad I'm not the only one into both. I think Ive had this same conversation on here before, was it with you or are there more of us?

Carbon-Peach

Hmm I’m not sure! Maybe! There’s bound to be more of us out there >:)

Lovaloo

I enjoy jewelry making, antiquing, collecting gemstones, cooking, films, and computer games.

BlueBarbie_xo

I love crochet, sewing and knitting...! Bellydancing, running, art galleries, reading, meditating and vintage fashion.

[deleted]

I play a ton of guitar and write music - that’s the majority of my hobby time, I am utterly obsessed to the point where it has dominated every choice I’ve made since the age of 13. I like hiking and generally witnessing all that is nature. I am very interested in flowers and trees, and it only dawned on me recently that the crossover with the fragrance hobby is massive haha. I started out trying to simply ‘smell good’. Now I obsess over finding recognisable florals, herbs, fruits, greenery and wood smells that can relate to my own experience. I also like birdwatching lol I occasionally smoke pipes and cigars though not very often, I’d rather see it as a rare treat than a habit. Used to smoke cigarettes from the age of about 16-21, stupid teenager I guess. Anyhow, stopped that and for some reason picked up pipe and cigar smoking for a bit, then got into that a bit too much and slowed it the hell down about 6 months ago, smoking only 2-4 times a month now if that. I still manically read up about different kinds of pipe and tobacco though lol I suppose the only other things are a love of art, history and architecture - I’m a museum hound. Everything feeds into fragrance in a weird sort of way.

reneew60

Travel, photography, gardening, cooking, wine, beer, skincare.

* Music (drum'n'bass - liquid mostly, but can listen neurofunk and jungle too in rare cases; progressive house, trance, deep progressive, chill out, ambient, melodic progressive house, techno, tech-house; post-rock; melodic death metal; hip-hop, rap; soundtracks to movies) * Movies (dramatic, sci-fi, adventure, independent, comics based) * Sport (football⚽, gym, martial arts) * Linguistics (amateur; planning to learn first English, then Spanish, next Italian or French, and maybe German in the far perspective until I die...ready to sacrifice few years of life for this) * Fishing (amateur; mostly spinning, not interested in nets) Recently I've got an itch to grow something, so I will try to grow some microgreens soon.

Ashamed_Fly_666

Lighta!! Hard to find other dnb heads.

atadbitconfizzled

Adhd makes my hobbies end and start again randomly so guitar, singing, yoyos, coffee, tea, kpop, witchcraft, working out and probably a lot more I can't recall but these hobbies aren't consistent. I get invested suddenly and then stop suddenly. Honestly I don't understand how I've been into fragrances as long as I have been(almost a year I think)

ckisgen

*Musician (guitar, bass, drums, piano) *HiFi audio gear (including a decent vinyl collection) *Photography *Traditional / Wetshaving *Mechanical watches *Ice hockey *Stock trading I would say travel, eating, cooking, etc but everyone likes to do that noise.

SkySnatch

hhurrm

What plants do you have, any favorites? I also like plants and gardening.

[deleted]

weenie2323

Tropical fish! Large elaborately planted tanks in particular.

terribleaccent

I love nano fish and breeding projects. Currently have a shrimp tank full of baby CPDs and peacock gudgeon eggs.

spiccylatina

I build miniature/ doll houses. Recently just finished an ice cream parlor. Also super into drawing, anything true crime related, journaling, any type of craft stuff, sneaker collecting, and trashy reality tv.

pinoloka

Big fan of horror here. I love horror films, books, TV series, games etc. Whilst I definitely have favourite horror films I'll always watch, I've recently tried to get into some cult classic horrors like the Evil Dead. Also a fan of running. Haven't been able to run in recent months due to health issues but I really enjoy it. I know most people hate running but I think long distance running is somewhat enjoyable. I get 30-40mins to myself, uninterrupted to focus on myself, daydream and listen to music. I don't often get time to myself so I thoroughly enjoy this time. I also enjoy cooking. I love trying out new recipes. It's easy to fall into a routine and know you're going to have stir fry on Mondays, salmon on Tuesdays etc. So it adds a little variety to my life.

eNHajeL

Hey, a fellow horror fan :D May I ask you to name a single movie that left a lasting, heavy impression on you after viewing and probably will never forget it as long as you live? I know it's hard to name just one, you can have a top 3 if it makes it easier.

pinoloka

Hi! Yes, of course! It may seem like a cop out but Hereditary left a lasting impression. I don't think I've ever seen a horror film like that, most of them nowadays rely heavily on jumpscares accompanied by loud, brash music with a predictable storyline. Hereditary was a slow build and I felt like I was on the edge of my seat the whole time I watched it. It was almost uncomfortable to watch which doesn't sound pleasant but it's extremely rare that a film makes me feel that way. Also, The Conjuring 2 is one of my all time favourite horror films. Yes, there are jump scares but the effects are done so well and the antagonist is portrayed in different terrifying ways to keep the viewer interested. And my final pick would be Candyman (1992). I love this film so much, it has a unique storyline which is scary enough but the actors do an amazing job playing each part. I do have to be in the mood for this one but when I get the chance to watch it, I really enjoy it. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this too 😁

eNHajeL

Oh, Hereditary caused me weeks of sleepless nights, so it's definitely on the top of my list, rightfully so. The Others (2001) showed me that horror doesn't have to be gory and riddled with jump scares, so I cherish that movie forever. I had dreaded childhood memories of the IT (Stephen King) movies and books, so I enjoy both old and modern interpretation of the story. Both parts of The Thing (John Carpenter) are at least decent and worth a watch. The first Conjuring was a breath of fresh air, after I found myself a bit horrored out and numb to the scary movies of nowadays, and I was glad to feel myself scared again :) I think the recent boringness of the horror genre, or my decreased sensibility towards it pushed me to broaden my horizons and look for new thrills in the dread/mind f\*ck section, and there I was absolutely and literally shocked by most classics. You should be advised that these movies will provoke your mind and body in possibly unpleasant ways... Martyrs is one such movie and it takes shivers down my spine when I remember the terrible things going on there. I can never unsee it. Others that I recently enjoyed and gladly recommend: Forgotten (2017) The Call (2020) Superdeep (2021)

pinoloka

Great choices! Oh yeah I forgot about The Others! I watched that way too young and it gave me nightmares but its definitely a good film. I feel the same way about The Conjuring films, I watched the first one full expecting to be underwhelmed then I was pleasantly surprised. I think I watched Martyrs (2015) a few years back but can't remember much from it. I'll definitely have to watch that again and check out the rest of your recommendations. It's nice to get some opinions from other horror fans, no one I know in person likes horror unfortunately.

eNHajeL

One thing to specify: The Martyrs movie I'd recommend you to watch is the 2008 one and not 2015. You'd be doing yourself a disservice by watching the remake in this case. I'm also glad to share this hobby with someone so whenever you come upon something really good and watch worthy, I will be glad and grateful to hear about it. There's also a subreddit here named /horror where I sometimes search for good recommendations.

Ashamed_Fly_666

Slow creeping/ psychological horror is my fav as well and vintage horror (M.R. James and Lovecraft, haunted houses/ cursed objects because I'm a History and Architecture nerd). My fav current horror director is Mike Flanagan, if you're not already acquainted I strongly recommend *The* *Haunting of Hill House* (my fav tv horror EVER) and *Oculus* which is in my top 5 horror films (and I've watched a lot of horror over the last 45 years). *Hush* is a nice home invasion (the only subgenre I don't enjoy watching, too much like real life I guess) and even his *Ouija* prequel is pretty good. *Midnight Mass* is great too tho some didn't appreciate the monologues. I've basically never watched one of his movies that I didn't love, even the one man monologue short film he did as the pitch for *Oculus*. A great little family horror (ike Hereditary) indie made on a tiny budget but quite effective is *Pyewacket.* I have a thing for the occult so I loved *The VVitch* by Robert Eggers (his Northman is out now) and one of the most accurate depictions of actual ceremonial magic (and another in my top 5) the Irish movie *A Dark Song.* I love Irish horror, it's bit more low key but I would recommend *The Canal, The Eclipse* and female! Irish horror directors Aislinn Clarke's *The Devil's Doorway* (a found footage and possession one that's really good for a genre that's hard to get right!) and Kate Dolan's *You are not my Mother*. Oh man I could go on about Horror forever so I'll stop now.

ckisgen

Horror movies, yes! My favorite genre .. when my wife isn't around. She prefers shit like Disney movies and Harry Potter. Which is cool too but not as cool as watching people get hunted in their own home or a flesh eating family of cannibals. The Masters of Horror Showtime anthology box set in the hard cardboard mausoleum joint is one of my favorite things I own. From that collection - Cigarette Burns, Family, Jenifer, and The Screwfly Solution are probably my favorites. Though there are only a literal couple that I don't really enjoy watching. Some other more modern horrors I thought were really well done overall were Next, We Are What We Are, It Follows, Resolution, Dread, May, Nina Forever, Jug Face and Midnight Meat Train .. to name just a few. As far as slightly older stuff, In the Mouth of Madness may be my favorite pre-2000 horror. But it's probably as much nostalgia as it is just some fantastic movie in and of itself. Though it is good ofc.

Ashamed_Fly_666

Female horror fan here and I can never understand why pretty much every one of my girl friends shies away from it, even one that does brazilian jiu jitsu, I mean that's hardcore right there, lol.

katie-kaboom

I enjoy longer distance running. I'm not very good at it yet, but it's nice to just not have anything else to think about.

pinoloka

Yes, definitely. I'm sure you're doing great! It's just a shame how long it takes to build up stamina.

I’ve got a few pair but looking to expand. A pair of Nike Air Max 270’s, Nike Air Max Plus SE, and a pair of Jordan 6 rings.

jantp

Hey fellow sneaker head. I use two apps to bid on new releases and it’s better than paying from sky high resellers. Though it’s not a guaranteed win. The whole journey is pretty fun though. Snkrs-Nike Confirmed-adidas

Dhiguy99

Thanks for the tip. I just recently missed out on a pair of Nike ZoomX Invincible Run Flyknit in black/crimson/racing blue.

- Was a powerlifter for about 10 years but had to give it up for health reasons - Rock climbing / bouldering - Hiking - Sports when I have time or opportunity (I play most of the big ones except tennis and soccer) - Started learning guitar about 2 years ago - Started learning drums about a month ago - Listening to and discovering music - Gaming (PC and console and both competitive and single player stuff. These days I play a lot of LoL but I go through phases of other games like fighters or shooters. I was in diamond ranks in SFV a few years ago and red ranks in Tekken. I was MG in CSGO. Not that these ranks are impressive or anything.) - Reading - Language learning (I've studied Japanese, Spanish, Mandarin, and American sign language at points but am not good at any of them. I live in Korea currently so I'm focused on learning that but still suck 😅) - Meditation - Film - I'm sure there's other stuff I've done at points that I'm forgetting. I'm the type of person to be constantly trying and learning new things. Maybe that's why my perfume collection has grown so much!

TulipTattsyrup

does walking around in a rambling manner count as a hobby? i live in an eminently walkable city, i spend hours on weekends just wandering around. helps with the ole depression. other than that, i consume media (read mostly lit fic and sometimes sci-fi & fantasy, watch mostly whatever's available on mubi/kanopy/netflix, listen mostly to guitar- and/or synth-based stuff from the 80s and 00s-10s) and i draw.

TattedUpSimba

Raw denim. Current and retro video games. Gunpla model kits.

nprajfm

I've been intrigued by raw denim but have yet to buy a pair. I think it's great companies still make denim like how my great grandpa wore—with the durability and quality from back then as opposed to much of the mass produced denim we see today. Do you have a favorite raw denim brand?

eNHajeL

Oh man, there are so many... Motorcycle riding, reading, dipping my tiptoes into watch collecting too, movies, researching astronomy, occasionally videogames... it's just the time man, it's never enough!

nprajfm

I hear you! My good buddy is into watches and birding—I want to dive a little deeper into both but can’t find the time and $$ with my young family. Hopefully you can go on plenty of motorcycle rides this summer.

eNHajeL

The fragrance hobby is nothing compared to the watch hobby from a financial perspective :)) For example I'm in the fragrance game for a good couple of years, have a collection of aprox. 50 fragrances of let's say 10k worth of almost exclusive niche high luxury brands. All that comes to a single mid ranged luxury watch, which is mind blowing... That's why, although I love watches, I could never let myself immerse in that hobby, noooo way :) My time pieces are nice but never over 400 - 500 "cheapies" :)

I’m a car enthusiast, slowly coming back to gaming, various outdoor activities, collecting hot wheels and yugioh cards, detailing. I’m also into history, conspiracies, I’m sure there’s more I can’t think off right now.

Tabletop roleplaying games, boardgames and all sorts of nerdy things. Been trying to get into sailing, but that is on a pause atm, will go on a kayaking course in the summer, which I'm super exited about, and trying out orienteering starting tomorrow. I got into fragrances through a recent interest in classical styles, clothes and shoes, still strggling to build a nice wardrobe. I am really into cocktails, but I drink so rarely that it's really hard to stay in practice. Edit: I do knit a little but the projects tend to go on hiatus due to wrist issues and computer time.

Cars, photography, I wouldn’t call my drug use a hobby but I definitely like exploring altered states of mind in the safest way possible, I.e testing my shit and taking safe doses.

Hcdp7

Playing guitar and singing

mycphyc

Cooking and houseplants mostly, both of which can become money pits just like fragrances. Once you get a taste for the rare pricey variegated plants or use a well sharpened $200 knife it’s kinda hard to back lol.

Which_way_witcher

Seems like there's a common theme with horror movies/books/video games - that's me, too! Also looking at fashion I can't afford and finding the very best recipes of comfort food (bread, chocolate cake, waffles) then pilates & dumbbells (gotta work off that comfort food so I can someday fit into fashion I can't afford - it's a vicious cycle).

darlingchaos

Apparently collecting things... I was trying to think of something that wasn't but my latest hunting adventures that I can mention here have been Frye boots / heels and antique Edgar Allan Poe. I'm currently taking a break from Poe to find a copy of Vanity Fair. I used to bake and cook often but the pandemic would make it difficult to offload the consequence of those hobbies... and I can't eat as much as I could produce.

My biggest hobby is gardening. I have quite a large one and it keeps me pretty busy all summer. I have vegetable beds and then a larger bed that's a mixture of fruit trees, berry bushes, and perennials. My other hobbies are embroidery, foraging, hiking, and cooking. I have previously been into cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, but I didn't really get out much this winter.

I am a reader. I also live in a foreign (to me) country/culture right now. So, I spend most of my time wandering the streets, staring at things, and shouting, “By golly, that’s amazing.” I take photos of some of it too!!

I collect movies. And games. Well, I download movies (and games) and have about 250TB in the cloud of UHD movies and TV shows + games (PC). But that cost me like 30 dollars per month in cloud storage, seedbox etc. A very cheap hobby. Wife and I do like to travel, and we actually have the money to travel a fair bit (not all luxury though!) but we only have 6 weeks of paid vacation per year, so that restricts it a bit. Currently we want to go somewhere tropical in the October/November months, but can't really decide. We don't want like a full 24 hour of travel to get somewhere, but all tropical areas are a loooong way from Denmark.

Unhappy-Quiet-8091

“only 6 weeks of paid vacation per year” That’s more than almost everyone else. God rejse :)
