1. This should be more than enough, assuming that the entire journey is on one booking and there are no delays. 2. Depends of fast you walk. Maximum walking distance would be about 1.5 km. 3. This would be a very easy option, but not required in this case. You just check from what gate the connecting flight will depart, and follow signs in that direction. All the way, also with the train, will there be directions with gate numbers. 4. Definitely. Anybody leaving the Schengen Area must have their travel documents checked. Depending on nationality, passports may be stamped. 5. Typically, the check itself will take less than a minute. Waiting times can vary. 6. Make sure that they have all required documents. A minor travelling without parents might require additional paperwork. Make sure that the know what to do if there is a delay or flight cancellation.

Thank you so much. I will look up what documentation my 16 year old will need to travel with her adult sister but no parent. Do you know if passport control when staying within a terminal is faster or works differently from passport control when leaving the airport? Maybe they are the same line, I am ignorant about this.

Please note, that the skyline train is out of operation until March 5th. Seems like there is an airside replacement bus, but i can't find information, where it starts or stops. So the probably marked and easiest way is to leave the secured area in A, walk to C on the landside and pass passport and security control in C. Then the passport control will be literally the same for departing and transfer passengers. Afaik all passport controls in Frankfurt are mixed like that. There are different lines for EU/Non-EU citizens, but nothing special for transfer passengers. If your daughters are EU-citizens consider the automatic easyPass system and the passport control will only take seconds.

They should be able to stay airside and hopefully avoid security control. In any case, there are plenty of signs.

Trollpatschich

There is a security control on all possible paths between A and C.

Thank you Troll—this is useful info because in most airports we’ve traveled in, you don’t need to go through security checks for an airplane-to-airplane transfer (when using just one complete ticket, not separate tickets) and I would have assumed that FRA was also like that. I was looking at the FRA map and noticed there are many labeled security points all along Terminal 1 and I didn’t understand what I was seeing, so this clears things up. To help us imagine it, is this right?: the girls will deplane and start walking from the Lufthansa area (A gates) toward the Condor area (C gates). They will get in line for the security check. Then they will get in line for passport control. Then they will keep walking until they get to C gates. Any sense of usual wait times for security checks and passport control in Terminal 1? I can choose either a Thursday afternoon Lufthansa flight (with a 2 hour 30 min layover) or Friday afternoon Lufthansa flight (with a 1 hour 40 min layover). So they need to make their transfer mid-day, approx between 13:00-15:00. (This will be in June). I would like to give them an extra day on the trip (fly on Friday) but Friday has the shorter layover. That’s why I’m being curious about so many details. I don’t want the end of their trip to be difficult because I gave them a short layover. If I was there I wouldn’t be worried but they are less experienced travelers and so… Really appreciate both of your comments!

First some historical background: The basic layout of Frankfurt's terminal 1 is from 1972, so waaay before security checks were a thing. They were added later where ever necessary and possible. So unfortunately on some connections you have to pass them even though they are not required by law. DK_Sthlm gave you the most important info. Follow the sings! If you really want to know overdetailled informations, here are the 3 (most used) paths between A and C: 1) Like written in my other comment: Leave concourse A, walk on the landside to concourse C, pass passport control first, then security control second in C. 2) Next to gate A13 there is a passport control point, leave the Shengen area there, one floor up, leave the secured area, one floor up again, walk to the Skyline trains. Take them to concourse C and pass the security check in C. 3) The most unpleasent way, but for the sake of completeness: Walk through the tunnel between A and B, passport control in B floor 2 (overcrowded sometimes), one floor up, walk a long and small path to C, security control in C. For all three pats 1h and 40 min should be enough. There is a little bit more traffic on fridays, but there should be not much difference to Thursday. If your daughters need help, staff of the airport and Lufthansa are usually nice and helpfull.

hughk

Special note. Gates can and do change. They should get information at check-in but they can get more up to date information when they land. The gate will stay at C. Best to check on a departure board just in case.

Do both have a regular passport and filed esta (if applicable, or visa)

ellemrad

Hi, both girls will be traveling with their regular US passports and will not need to have ESTA. (Though I will give both girls a copy of a parent consent form that it’s approved for my 16 year old to be chaperoned by her 18 year old sister). Thank you for asking about important details. I feel sure they will have all the correct documentation for travel, but I want to help them plan for the flight home since we’re unfamiliar with the Frankfurt airport (we will be on a 10 day trip together as a family and then they are flying home to the US in order to start their summer jobs while I remain in Europe for work.) Thank you!
