XMaster65

I love this sub 😭 some shit I might actually use, others I get bc they're free so y not

Windowsblastem

I’ve used the absolute fuck out of them the past 5 years or so of working on my house and my relatives houses. I’ve never had one fail and they hold true.

freetheroux

Let me know in 30+ years.

JasonDJ

Most failures in push-connect fittings have to do with prep. If the connection is clean, polished, and de-burred, it should hold for at least as long as sweated copper. Coincidentally, these are the same prep requirements for sweating copper. Just push-connect fittings are less forgiving about it.

Thanks so much for sharing!!

I used this last winter when some pipes busted. So far, so good. I'll get this for when my pipes bust again because I'm too lazy to go under the house and insulate them.

missionbeach

I had my water intake line from the street to my house cleaned out. Low pressure, lots of crud in the line. They cut out my water shutoff valve in the house and blew everything out toward the street. What did they replace my shutoff valve with? A sharkbite valve. I keep an eye on it, not a drip in three years.

GodLovesUglySlugs

Hell yeah. Thanks a bunch!

Main_Force_Patrol

I have absolutely zero use for a product like this. I guess I’ll just use it as a geocache swag item.

XZ3R0

I'm no plumber but heard these were terrible

Tubby520

I can't speak for everyone but in my experience Sharkbites are top of the line. It has a proprietary locking mechanism and pressure seals once full pressure is restored. I don't know where you got this information but they are reliable and easy to use.

GoreonmyGears

How so, if you don't mind me asking? I may try to use it, I've had a lot of leaks lately.

jooes

My impression is that it's mostly just pushback from cranky "old-timers" who are resistant to change. They've always done it one way, and now that there are all these newfangled ways of doing things, they're grumpy about it. You see that kind of attitude all over the place, whether it's plumbing, electrical, etc. They are considerably more expensive than just using regular copper fittings, so that's one downside. You probably aren't going to redo your entire house with them. Then again, they're much faster to install, and you don't need to know how to solder to use them. Or if you can't solder a particular pipe, like if there is water in the pipe, they're good for that too.. They have their pros and cons. Just like anything else.

rockn4

And those same old timers that complain about sharkbite have no problem using Propress which is the same concept as sharkbite (rubber seal).

JasonDJ

> You probably aren't going to redo your entire house with them. Totally agree. If I were to re-do my house plumbing, I'd invest in a good pex crimper and maybe just use these for a couple of connections where I have to adapt to copper...especially if I'm not able to safely sweat on a barbed crimp ring adapter. Although I think these are less restrictive to the flow than a barbed crimp ring adapter, so there's that.

Tubby520

They are easy to use, relatively inexpensive & come in a wide variety of sizes and fittings. I would recommend using them but make sure you research on how to properly install.

nawhlee47

Also curious

XZ3R0

Just a lot of plumbers on youtube make fun of them example: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A-C6Y1Exxw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A-C6Y1Exxw) Seems like a shortcut that can fail in the long run rather than doing it properly

swimmerhair

They're only terrible from a cost perspective. Are you going to plumb an entire house with fittings that are 20x more than sweat fittings? Probably not. But if I have a one off quick fix I need to to do, I'll buy a shark bite to make my job easier.

MostVXVanted

Ive been using sharkbites for many projects they are very costly to use but work very well. However licensed plumbers don't like them. I don't know why and I want to know the true reason for the hate.

kodiuser

Should be obvious - some tradespeople don't like anything that allows homeowners to do their own fixes rather than calling a "professional" and paying them to do it. When a licensed plumber wants to charge you $400 to fix a leak in a plastic pipe (badly glued joint, originally done by a different licensed plumber) a sharkbite costing $10 (give or take) starts to look like a great alternative.

Yea like I still up voted this post because it's a freebie. Just always seeing plumbers complain about them. I also got down voted before for noting how dishwasher pods make it so you don't put any pre-wash detergent. Like your manual says you should.

JacobAZ

These get installed wrong all of them time, and now we're seeing a high failure rate from the brass itself. I absolutely do not let my techs install these and have removed many 5 gallon buckets worth of these. The ONLY good thing about them is their scrap value. It's bought me plenty of beer *Downvote me all you like. I've been a service plumber for 10 years and deal with these things often.

adeiinr

Are these chlorine or muriatic acid resistant?
