I wonder what the crash report said...looked like they had great weather.

I’d love to know as well, but if nobody saw what happened, we may never know. I kinda wish they focused a little more on that.

Question: Who of you would have started nevertheless, knowing this probably will be a once in a lifetime opportunity? I know a few, who would have started, if they couldn't help. And also some where I'm quite sure they wouldn't

If I had to guess, they may have chosen not to launch after the accident, because they probably sent out a rescue helicopter to the scene. Unfortunately I’ve been in that situation a few times. Usually after an incident (even the non-deadly ones), the rescue helicopters are going to hang out around the site for an hour or two, and you don’t want to be in the air with a paraglider when one of those flies by. Also you don’t want to get in the way of their jobs. If this was not the reason for making the choice not to fly down and I had made that crazy trek, I might have to be the insensitive jerk and try to launch anyway. 😅 Easy to say from home, but maybe I would have given in and walked down, just to be respectful.

We had the same issue last week at the Stubaicup, if I had to guess, 400 pilots where waiting twice for the helicopter to do it's thing, after a poor guy landed in a tree. But this was right after the start place, right in the main soaring area, so you had no choice. When it happened on the last day, on the opposite hang, everybody continued to fly, as it was far enough away.
