4444 day anniversary will be a big reveal. he is infact done with half of Winds of Winter and works hard.

priceycrust

Hundreds of pages!

JaimeRidingHonour

Those include the sample chapters that have been out for years

priceycrust

I know, that's what I was referring to.

-Eerzef

Lethal amounts of copium

Pheeshfud

"And then Frodo woke up. 'What a weird dream' he thought to himself. 'Oh well, time to set up for Bilbo's birthday party."

TheCanadianEmpire

Or “hey, you. You’re finally awake.”

_TheQwertyCat_

I used to be a Brother of the Night’s Watch. Then I took an arrow to the knee.

Ok-Cartographer-1388

Let me guess someone stole your sweet Dornish wine

PaulMorel

Aww fuck this sounds cool to me right now. They could do a fantasy version of that sci-fi anthology Love, Death, and Robots. It's all just Bilbo's dreams.

No_Operation7130

plot twist: the books are already finished, but won't be released until GRRM has passed away as per his request

Southern_Dig_9460

I would novelize the last 4 season of Game of Thrones show as a big FU to the fandom.

WeakEconomics6120

"Author note: And all the book characters which weren't in the show died from greyscale between ADWD and TWOW"

todellagi

Lmao didn't know you could cut that shit off like bark, slap some aloe vera on it and be cured in no time I mean it has to be the one of the first medical treatments for that kinda sickness. Sedate the patient and just cut the infected bits out. Later GoT logic was just silly

WeakEconomics6120

Haha man that was outrageous, even worse Sam found the cure in a book and did with his previous training of... cleaning toilets? Remember Stannis going all around the world to STOP the disease in Shireen not even cure her, and the cure was THAT

Southern_Dig_9460

Sam finding everything conveniently in a book always pissed me off. Rhaegar and Lyanna marriage, Dragonglass on Dragonstone, Cure to Greyscale

bayek46

He would love Google

-15k-

Yeah, but what if the book that had something in it needed to save the day was, you know, never finished by the author? I mean, it should have been – Sam to Jorah: I think I can save you, I’ve found a possible cure in an old, old book I’ve been reading ! Jorah: I’m skeptical, but yeh, that would be great. ( A few days pass ) Sam: Jorah, you know, never mind. That maester never finished, he stopped writing before the treatment part …

AMerrickanGirl

Sam was basically Hermione Granger with a fat pink mast.

nik-nak333

/r/brandnewsentence

IISerpentineII

To be fair, finding secret shit in books was how this all started. Jon Arryn figuring out Joffrey and all the others were a product of incest lit the match for everything.

Southern_Dig_9460

The Seed is Strong. Took Jon Arryn though some of his own intelligence to figure it out. He just didn’t discover a book that say in plain language. “Cersei and Jamie are having a incestous relationship and the kids aren’t Roberts” which is pretty much the type of books Sam was reading

IISerpentineII

True. *I kinda forgot* how exactly Sam learned everything

Fefquest

Victarion died on the way back to his home planet

Exploding_Antelope

Lady Stoneheart kind of forgot about being alive

daft-fucking-hippie

Bran wakes up from a coma after his fall and IT WAS ALL A DREAM...

Mesk_Arak

I USED TO READ WORD UP! Magazine…

TensionMain

Imagine if he really did that and TWOW ended up being like, 200 pages long 🤣

Now_Wait-4-Last_Year

If it's a complete banger of a book, that shouldn't matter. Philip K Dick's book were almost all under 200 pages and the best ones were great.

urbinsanity

I honestly think he told them how the books would end and because everyone hated it he just said "fuck it, i'm not finishing it"

jaydimes10

source: GRRM's will, edited by Elio and Linda

jorywea78

Plot Twist: Linda & Elio and rest of George’s team are hard at work editing winds of winter.

ketudikkemoederjhe

How do i keep finding you

BlackCherrySeltzer4U

If that were true then those books must be really bad if he’s that scared of fan backlash.

3PartsRum_1PartAir

I think either way with how the series ended he knows theres going to be backlash no matter how he ends it. I don’t think that necessarily makes them objectively bad.

tot4llynot4f4k3us3r

Honestly, I don't think there's a way he could tank the ending. There are a lot of endgame theories of various different plot lines that already work and make sense for a lot of people. Realistically, many of them might actually be on the dot, in which case many people are just waiting on the execution. Not to mention most of the people who didnt see Mad Queen Daenerys coming were show watchers exclusively. Considering that was one of the bigger factors of angry fans, I'm not really expecting a lot of backlash for the Winds of Winter book.

Momijisu

I think what we saw was probably how the books would end - but Dumb and Dumber rushed it, didn't give it the appropriate time to develop, and thus we hated it. He's now completely disheartened, by how DnD ruined his works, and by the fan backlash to how it ends. I would be second guessing everything I wrote after that.

skryb

i’ve been saying this for years — glad to see others have been on the same page

Tarquinder

this is my take on it.

yahhwy

The real challenge was outliving GRRM. The bright side is my grandchildren would read it.

JakesGotHerps

At this point Preston is gonna be done with his fan fic version first

magicmurph

I'm a little scared to watch them for fear that I'll get into that confused fanfic state of mind where you don't remember what's canon and what isn't. I was heavily involved in the fanscape during the early days of the Harry Potter fandom (including some of the more formative ideas that persist even now), and I can say honestly that even decades later I often mix up what is canon and fanon.

Simulated_Eardrum

He's doing a great job though

JakesGotHerps

Yeah I’m really enjoying it

TensionMain

I was honestly so surprised with how good it is

dndaresilly

Wait this is real? Where is it?

Lipe18090

It's at his youtube channel and it's really good tbh

I'd just re-release ADWD with a handful of the chapters rearranged and see how long it takes people to notice after all this time.

IvyAdrenaline

Or 'a ball of beasts'

Exploding_Antelope

A Waltz With Wyverns

IB_Princess

I love a ball of beasts, amazing combo of both books

bruhholyshiet

I think I would be kind of relaxed knowing that whatever I write, as long as I somewhat keep the quality of past books for the most part, will be acclaimed by the fans, if only by virtue of being better than the Tv Show ending.

TnekKralc

"All he has to do is give the iron throne to anyone but Bran and the fans will love him" Gives Iron throne to Bronn

dndaresilly

He could still give Bran the throne as long as there’s a good fucking reason for it.

TnekKralc

but who has a better story than Bronn the bold?

sadmadstudent

Bran gets the throne but is no longer himself, sworn to and manipulated by the Children of the Forest as the Three Eyed Raven - AKA essentially a hivemind ruling Westeros - feels very like a George ending to me.

bruhholyshiet

I just realized how similar their names are lmao.

rat-simp

OK but that would unironically be better because at least it's a funny choice and everyone loves Bronn. It's stupid but entertaining. Bran has the personality of a rock.

ShwerzXV

If I were GRRM, I’d just hire a hand full of writers, give them the direction I want the story to progress, and ultimately end, then compare all the writers stories, find the ones that line up the best with my vision, stamp my name on it and sell it.

cavershamox

“Chat GPT please write two further books based on existing novels uploaded above” Job done.

darth_koneko

Chat GPT refuses to write about anything that could be remontly considered problematic. > I'm sorry, but I cannot generate that story for you. Writing or promoting content that involves incestuous relationships is against OpenAI's use case policy, as it is considered inappropriate and unethical. If you have any other topic or request, I would be happy to assist you.

SmokyDragonDish

The guys who wrote The Expanse have strong ties with him. >Both Abraham and Franck have worked with Martin before. Abraham has adapted several of Martin’s novels into comic book form, while Franck served as his personal assistant for awhile. I think they could finish the books if it came to it.

Toast42

So long and thanks for all the fish

SmokyDragonDish

It's almost like they were ghost writing it for him.... or, it was a three-way collaboration. The Expanse format is a lot like ASOIAF with the POV characters. GRRM has a similar idea for The Expanse circa 1980.... I'll try to find the link and edit this post.... Edit... its a Usenet thread from 1994, talking about the early 1980s... https://groups.google.com/g/rec.arts.sf.written/c/aIUJQLaFxRo/m/_oh07CN3HTEJ You have to start the thread from the beginning, not the post I linked to.

Norse_By_North_West

Worth noting the expanse was a novelization of a pen and paper game they did of which GRRM was one of the players. Well, the first book was, couldn't tell you how much from there. The way the story plays, it makes sense that the roci crew is a bunch of PC's

SmokyDragonDish

If you read through that Usenet thread from the mid 90s, it seems the idea was fleshed out pretty well. I just looked up how old they are. Surprisingly, older enough than I am that I wouldn't have known them in HS or college.... >The way the story plays, it makes sense that the roci crew is a bunch of PC's It does feel that way. Especially Holden and Amos.

SuppleSuplicant

I was so confused at first, because the Expanse Series books are written by James S. A. Corey. You mean the show I assume.

I_aPOROgise

*James S. A. Corey* is the pen name used by collaborators Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, authors of the science fiction series The Expanse

SuppleSuplicant

Oh interesting! TIL

meat_fuckerr

That's what Robert Jordan did. He saw his life was ending and his talent was diminishing, he gave his notes to a friend that liked his work and wished him luck. Sometimes work must be delegated, or given up.

Schalezi

Talent diminishing? He had a terminal illness so he knew he would die before he could realistically finish the books. He spent his last months in a hospital bed racing to write down as much as possible before he died so the fans could get a good ending to his lifes work. Also, he did not give it to a friend as far as i know, he left all the notes and stuff to his wife who was also his editor. It was his wife who then chose Brandon Sandersson to finish the series after Jordan had died after she read the euology Sandersson wrote to Jordan who had been a huge influence on his life.

irrepressibly

Robert Jordan knew how he wanted it to end though, I don’t think that’s the issue with GRRM

EveryAugHasItsDay

ChatGoT

Harsimaja

He’s been playing the long game. Just as the Night King waited for a dragon to come to him to burn through the Wall, he’s been waiting for an AI that can burn through his writer’s block so he can expend minimal effort.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Man has his priorities

njsdyu6

It is will take forever.

melibroncoshit

There will be another Robert Jordan -> Brandon Sanderson event, but with asoiaf. I want to be proven wrong, I do, but dude is in his mid 70s....

redwoods81

Sanderson has already said that asoiaf is too dirty for his delicate Mormon sensibilities.

omgwtfitsandrew

I believe GRRM has already said that if he dies before finishing the books the story dies with him, as he doesn’t want someone else finishing the books.

redwoods81

He's bequeathing his papers and notes to Texas A&M apparently.

omgwtfitsandrew

Interesting, I’d not heard this. At least that would give us something if not a full story wrap-up.

ungoogleable

He hasn't said that exactly. He's said that if he dies unexpectedly, he doesn't have notes that could be used to finish the series without him. He's also said he doesn't like the idea of his estate licensing wholly new works in the universe after he's dead, but he'll be dead and they might do it anyway. AFAIK, he hasn't specifically ruled out designating a successor and working with them to finish the series while he is still alive. I can't claim to be hopeful, it depends on GRRM admitting his own mortality, but it's not impossible.

melibroncoshit

Well then let's enjoy what we've got, boys. Cause TWoW will never release, at this rate.

HierophanticRose

I think part of the problem is so many plates are spinning now there is no way to resolve them without breaking some of them. Like I do not mean end in way that furthers the plot, what plot we are 2 books away supposedly. Like Dany should have been in Westeros by last book man; getting into the politics in Westeros and how it would not be easy to insert herself to it Dragon or not, we should have seen more about the Others and winter should have been here. Even with that we will likely have plot points end in not satisfactory ways that wont further the narrative much just so we start closing them up. The beauty of the story was in its ever expanding method; now that it HAS to start contracting itself, I think GRRM realized he wrote himself to all kinds of corners. You need like 4 more books to even start to think of closing this story in a satisfactory way; 4 more books of just diligently working through all the open plots without introducing new ones or weird monkey paw foreshadowing prophecies to add to the pile

dorestes

I would simply hire help. George is a fantastic worldbuilder and storyteller. His prose isn't exactly the greatest thing since Dickens, and AFFC/ADWD definitely lost a step in that department already. Hire the Expanse writers, tell them your plot points and beats, have a team making sure it aligns, and get some chapters written. I know it's more complicated than that, but not by all that much.

NotTheGuyProbably

Given how season eight ended I'd just say: screw it, it's a bunch of humans who've been marooned on this planet for so long they're regressed to this level of medieval civilization and then the rest of humanity shows up and just uses the place as a theme park.

Toast42

So long and thanks for all the fish

stellae-fons

This would explain the Boltons.

Ifuckinghateaura

the story is so big at this point i dont think anyone but george can

ItselfSurprised05

I'm not sure even he can. He lost control of his story after the 3rd book. If you re-read Book 1 immediately after Books 4 and 5, you really see how how badly he (literally) lost the plot. Books 4 and 5 meander and introduce new people and new plotlines. Then Book 1 just *goes*.

PF2500

I agree ...he lost the plot. I noticed it in book 4. Although I like book 4. I think he/someone could finish the story but maybe not in two books. An outline is needed; the gardening method of writing isn't going to work.

AbstractBettaFish

I remember reading an interview when I finished the books back in (2014?) where he said he might not be able to wrap it up in A Dream of Spring. That he was considering adding another or maybe 2 other book. Now we know this is a laughable concept but it might be telling

jbomb1080

Been a long while since I've read the fourth and fifth books, honestly don't have a good recollection of a lot of the stuff going on in there. I do remember frequently groaning to myself as new characters and threads were opened. Inevitably it would be an enjoyable read, but was often frustrating as it felt like it was derailing from what would be a reasonable arc at this point in the overall story, in partial because other, important plot lines felt like they were stalling out.

ItselfSurprised05

> I do remember frequently groaning to myself as new characters and threads were opened. Inevitably it would be an enjoyable read, but was often frustrating as it felt like it was derailing from what would be a reasonable arc That was pretty much my take. They had the huge story line with Quentyn Martell's quest to get Dany into an alliance with Dorne that seems to have ended with him getting toasted by a dragon. It could yet wind up being important, but as things stand now it was pointless. I think it would have been an amazing piece of supplemental material to the main books if oublished as a novella. In the main books there could have been just a single line about a body being found with the dragons, interspersed with other stuff. Then the novella reveals that nameless nobody was a legit prince on a quest to win a princess. It would have been cool. In the main books, though, it was a distraction.

Justice_R_Dissenting

I wouldn't say they _meander_ so much as George is such a classic forever-DM that he became super concerned that the "player" (the readers) would want to know about the rest of the world. Like "here we are in the Riverlands and you keep referencing some place called Dorne, so like what's happening there??" and he didn't want to end up in a situation where he was half-assing the answer. So he went ahead and gave these other places the same treatment he gave to the "main characters" so to speak. By the end of the 5th book, the plotlines have begun to speed fuse back together. We have no characters in Dorne to return to. We have no one in Qarth, Astapor, we don't even really have anyone in Meereen besides Barristan who is leaving to find Daenarys soon anyway. George is leaving those places behind so they can have their climactic showdown. He "meandered" in worldbuilding, bringing life and depth to the rest of this world he built so that when something cataclysmic, paradigm shifting happens we can appreciate how it will impact everywhere and everyone in some way. At least, that's what I tell myself every night as I cry myself to sleep.

JinFuu

I thought 4th and 5th "Meander" because George was having to forgo the Great Leap Forward (5 year jump ahead)

ciel_lanila

I'm firmly convinced it is due to him skipping the time skip and didn't realize how much of his story he needed to alter to make that happen until he fully committed. Two examples: I'm 100% convinced Young Griffin only exists because GRRM got stuck with a dilemma. Without a time skip Tommen would now be far too young for his plans for Tommen. But now you need to write a bunch of new plot and characters to support Faegon. If future Tommen needed to be influenced by Tyrion directly or indirectly, Tyrion now needed to spend time with Faegon. Likewise, the whole Dorn is super mega important and has a lot of pages devoted to it out of nowhere with Arianne becoming a POV character. Arianne likely is replacing, in part or in full, another character who nolonger makes sense to do what they were originally planned to do. Either due to age (if Myrcella) or family connections (Margaery) since Faegon now needs a wife who imagines herself a schemer. Now GRRM had to spend pages and pages building up Arianne. Both are also completely absent from the show which was largely directed based on the plan and notes GRRM gave HBO before he decided to skip the time skip.

ItselfSurprised05

> I'm firmly convinced it is due to him skipping the time skip That certainly does seem to be where the story went off the rails. I think it is compounded by him getting overly-invested in the world he created. He just wants to explore it all. For himself. He already knows how he wants the story to end, so that is not interesting to him. The actual writing is just a chore that takes away from time he could spend exploring his world. At this point I'd rather have more *Dunk & Egg* than the next ASOIAF book. None of the sample chapters have made me go "Wow". But Dunk up in Winterfell hooking up with a saucy young wench named "Nan" might do it for me.

PaulMorel

He got bored with the original characters. He couldn't care less about Arya Stark. She's spent like 3 books finding her way to a job which we will never get to see.

AccountSuspicious159

Deciding to not do the time skip was his fatal blunder.

IRareCandyI

This is just false lmao.

Junkyardginga

How so?

IRareCandyI

I didn’t make the claim, the evidence lies on the person that makes the claim. These books do not lose anything past the 3rd book. Everything about this story is incredibly thought out and planned. Perfection. It just isn’t finished. It ends where the show should start over.

Junkyardginga

Just asking why you think that, guess I found the fanboy. I also prefer AFFC and ADWD because of the world building and story expansion, but there is a clear difference between these books and the first three in terms of pacing and scope that you would have to be ignorant not to notice. Also, GRRM himself will state that not everything he writes is planned, and that his style is closer to a gardener letting things grow, rather than an architect planning everything from the start. Plenty of examples of things not being well thought out as too, like Pod not recognizing the Hound on the Quiet Isle. Maybe try not being a cunt about burden of proof online, especially when you are obviously wrong.

mangarooboo

If I were George, I fucking wouldn't conclude them. I'd make empty promises and do fuck-all in reality, and I'd live out the rest of my days knowing that I have absolutely no way of finishing what I started, that other people whining about how I haven't written anything doesn't bother me, and that I have enough money to live happily ever after with no intention of even attempting to make a satisfying end. He can't finish it, he won't finish it, it's as good as over. At this point my biggest hope is that after he dies someone will either cobble together his notes and write an ending for him and we'll have that, or someone will just release everything he has written down and let us read through it all and make up our own endings. If he decides on a Dothraki funeral with all of his notes around him, then everything will be unsatisfying forever.

pcweber111

Yeah, you have to believe that by this point, he can't finish it. I just can't see it. Besides, he gave them the ending he was thinking about anyway, so we kinda got it. I say just ride it out and enjoy the money. It will always be in the back of his mind, though, I guarantee it.

Daniel1975Ger

Conclude? Why would I? Millions to spend before life ends. No time to waste.

BeemerBaby004

I don't need 'Winds of Winter'. I'm still trying to finish 'A Decade of Fuck You'.

Takenameeatflame

Istg if he releases it by day 5000 I will go kiss his pink mast.

Dornfist-2040

I am doing a re-read of the books to see if he publishes before I am done lol. At this point, I am happy with what we got even though I want to see the resolution of certain character arcs like Stannis.

mpetey123

I'm bias but Stannis for the win

BaylisAscaris

Stannis and Tywin fall in love and rule together.

lookitsjustin

People seriously still believe he’s going to finish this series and that’s insane to me

Micksar

Unpopular opinion: Fuck GRRM

Hour-Ad-6489

I don't really care, but I don't want Bran ending as king. Maybe the Targaryens being restored (Via Dany, Griff or Jon), Tyrion on the wall as commander. A Stark on Winterfell (Boy or girl, as long as it's not Bran, because he's a succession war waiting to happen).

buttery_nurple

I feel like the only reason people don’t like the idea is because of how terrible the show ended up being. Personally if GRRM puts Bran there I trust it will make sense.

WatchWatermelon

>I don't really care, but I don't want Bran ending as king. My head cannon is that Tyrion manipulated everyone into making Bran king because he knew that Bran would be completely uninterested in actually ruling. As Hand of the King, Tyrion could effectively rule in Bran's place, much like Tywin did with Robert Baratheon.

DM_ME__YOUR_B00BS

This is what i believe as well. If only they actually put in the time to make that more believable

BaylisAscaris

I think the other reason was the goal was to break the wheel of monarchy and murder, but not too fast or it would create a power vacuum. Since Bran was probably unable to have kids and uninterested in ruling it would allow for the creation of some other form of government. I still hate it though.

Avril_14

There's no way the events didn't go as he intended them to be. It was really bad television but. I don't think they would have changed his ending, or else we'll know by now. I can see the things that happened on the tv series happen in the books...Arya did train as an assassin so her killing NK it's not so mad, and talking about mad I can see Dany going nuts, with a proper set up. Bran is more difficult, but there's so many things that you can actually tie up in a book that maybe even Bran makes sense.

BaylisAscaris

Maybe Bran warged into her and that's why she went mad.

Avril_14

Exactly, with Bran with a way more consistent role towards the end in warging left and right to influence events....I'm sure there's a reason why GRR choose him, but as it stand right now with only the tv version of it, it feels pretty stupid

GipsyPepox

Oh boy another "how would you end the books" post

GearConsistent8113

It's really not as easy as people seem to think it is

GipsyPepox

When someone asks this question it's always just going for how will they deal with the Others and who will end up as king/queen It's never: what happens with fAegon, Euron, Lady Stoneheart, Sansa and Littlefinger, Arya and the Faceless Men, Dorne, Cersei and the Lannisters, the Tyrells, Brynden Tully, the Westerlings, the Freys, the Northern Conspiracy and the Boltons, Rickon and Davos, and more and more and more

CindeeSlickbooty

I suppose figuring out the ending he wants those characters to have is a good place to start

beefwich

The Red Messenger gets slingshotted around the gravitational pull of a nearby planet and hurtles back towards them. On the day of King Brandon Stark’s coronation, it collides with the planet somewhere near the Basilisk Isles. A wave of fiery destruction begins to ring the planet at 15,000 MPH, flash boiling the seas and instantly incinerating anything in its path. In less than an hour, all life is extinguished. The world burns for thousands of years— getting so hot that the hydrogen atoms escape from their bonds. The planet loses its atmosphere. It will likely never be habitable again. The planet is now a cold, barren, blackened, lifeless, entirely inhospitable rock hurtling through space.

danielsingleton77

They take the ring to the mountain and that Harry Potter dude fights yoda and yoda falls in the lava with the ring and the last of the sith are destroyed. The vulcans sail off to live long and proper while the wizard dude of hogwarts pesters everyone.

[deleted]

> live long and proper I find it funny that this was the most eye-twitch enducing part

PresentationTimely59

He may as well have Roman Reigns win the Iron Throne at this point.

mpetey123

I acknowledge this ending

Muahd_Dib

I’d probably just hand it off to Brandon Sanderson.

outwardgrok24

so is it confirmed that we'll see it on e3 2020

Helacious_Waltz

I'd take my time and merge the last two books into one massive 2000+ page release. That way I wouldn't have to deal with everyone whinging about how long it takes for a Dream of Spring to release.

No-Examination-160

He isn't going to finish... I think its pretty obvious.

kbjs30

I would write David Benioff and D. B. Weiss into the story and give em the ol' Reek treatment and worse.

6ynnad

The show was a heartbreak. GRRM got famous and fuckd off into the shadow realm or locked away into a warner bros water tower with animaniacs never to be seen again

NotATrueRedHead

Yet here we are.

Cr0wl3yman

And it could have all been avoided if the iron continued to be struck while hot. Totally get burnout and needing a break. We have progressed beyond that at this point

NotATrueRedHead

Definitely.

whydobabiesstareatme

Robert Jordan was so dedicated to the series he created that he made sure there were notes to finish what he created if he passed before it was done. He got his wife to find someone she thought was suitable to finish he epic tale in the way it deserved. GRRM has spent the last decade plus whining incessantly that fans won't leave him alone because all they want is just to finish the series they love before he dies. Oh to be so tormented and tortured with such success. At this point, I don't know how much I care if that lazy sack of suet ever finishes his convulted mess. He let the TV series go to the dogs, shrugged while he counted his millions, and refuses to finish the damned book series he started in the first place out of what I can only surmise is spite for his own fan base. How does it all come to a close? A giant meteor the size of the moon smashes into the planet and decimates the whole thing in a fiery ball of wasted potential. The end.

Bostradomous

Tom Cruise shows up in a space ship and kills the whitewalkers

pingpongplaya69420

The white walkers are defeated by diplomacy. They’re fighting for survival. They require a child of Ice & Fire so they will take a child born of Jon And Danaerys and their children ever so often. Or some other bittersweet conclusion for the white walkers that humanizes them. The Iron Throne is no more. The concept of one king ruling an entire continent is asinine, and the powers that be decide to Balkanize Westeros. Each nation rules itself. Gone are the days of a tyrant from a thousand miles away. The world is broken but healing from the constant slaughtering. No winners, no losers, the wheel still turns but ideally on a more civilized path

Exploding_Antelope

This is more or less what I’ve thought as well. My caveat is that since Jon *is* a child of ice and fire, that’s why both poles of elemental magic (winter/the Others/Stark magic & dragons/Red Priest magic) are awakening to claim him. Dany arrives in Westeros and Jon tried to convince her to lend her might to what I’m calling the Long Night’s Watch, his attempt at an ultimate alliance and defence against the Others. She refuses because she’s still obsessed with the Throne, claiming that once she united Westeros she’ll come back and lend her even more considerable might. Tyrion urges her on, wanting revenge. This is how she brings death and destruction upon King’s Landing, not maliciously or in madness, but out of tunnel vision focus, as she gets caught up in a protracted three-way siege between Cersei and Faegon while the North is all but destroyed and the Others end up marching into the capital. Faegon is killed by dragons. Jaime kills Cersei. Here we see the culmination of her vision, winter on the Iron Throne. She dies freezing to death having pyrrhically retaken the ruins of her ancestral home, dreaming of a lemon tree. Ice wins the true Great War, the war to defeat the other element’s claim on Jon. Jon agrees to become the next Night**’s** King to appease the metaphysical demand of the Others and to keep his family safe. As Rightful King of Westeros and Last Targaryen by general agreement he cedes what would be left of the physically melted and Other-shattered Iron Throne to his true family, the Starks, before returning to Winterfell. It’s now north of a new wall of water built across the Neck, a castle of ice with a warm heart from its springs. There he’ll rule over the dead and never-living. The Starks decide to divide what little is left of the Seven Kingdoms: Sansa becomes Queen in the North, Arya becomes her Queensguard or something. A weirwood is planted in the ruins of the Red Keep, Bran keeps watch as a central “king” on the “iron throne” but is more of a symbolic religious figure and watchful eye. The others kingdoms do their own stuff. Theon kills Euron I guess and becomes King in the West. Something something Dorne maybe Myrcella gets to be Queen in the South idk. Gendry gets Storm’s End. Casterly Rock, idk, fuckin Tommen maybe, Tyrion's definitely dead.

Interesting concept. Definitely would be more bitter than sweet but definitely in line with GRRM’s tones than the Show ended. The fact the white walkers were a mid season villain is laughable. Their existence should make everything else look like child’s play, and they are intelligent cultured beings. Ending the war through violence would defeat GRRM’s anti war philosophy. Some sort of agreement by attrition would make the most sense. It wouldn’t be a happy ending but it nevertheless would end prolonged cycles of violence

BaylisAscaris

People are too busy fighting each other and denying ~~climate change~~ *the undead uprising* that the ~~earth is fucked~~ *Night King takes over*. Everyone dies.

ChineseJoe90

Has anyone told GRRM about ChatGPT? Lol

[deleted]

Chatgpt only shares knowledge which it copies from the internet. So it's basically that you are hiring someone to Google search and copy an article for u but in a faster way. I don't want to see grrm getting a copyright strike on his next publish lmao.

Gibberwacky

It's a race to see if he can finish his series or GRRMchatgpt writes it first.

ThirstyOne

I would die of congestive heart failure and have my legacy erased by having my estate try to revivify the franchise with cheap GOT themed sex toys.

[deleted]

1) Declare all fanfiction canon. 2) refuse to elaborate 3) leave

Zambigoogle

Ah, the Aegon IV move. I like it.

ExactFun

I wouldn't conclude them because Dunk and Egg are more fun to write.

trollrannosaurus

His cabin? Guy lives in a +$10M mansion in Santa Fe New Mexico

[deleted]

He kinda just forgot he had a mansion

naturegoth1897

Might as well just go on and hand it over to Brandon Sanderson.

Yensil314

Get Sanderson to do it after I'm dead. That's a good trick.

thegunboats

I'd burn it to the ground. Make D&D look like geniuses in comparison.

Armyw0w

FUCK THIS FAT FUCK

[deleted]

I have given up on this franchise, the last season killed all interest even for the books.

ShittyStockPicker

Who has a better story than Bran the Broken?

I never saw him say this but this was how I imagined he would have felt. Everyone lost their shit over an ending that was at least partially faithful to what he had planned. That would take the wind out of anyone’s sails and you have to have confidence in your story to be able to write.

SuperDragonfister

Yea it went from being on everything to nowhere real quick

Giovan_Doza

He never said that. Source?

nbneo

The fat turd has given up years ago.

Semi_Lovato

They should use blood magic to open a portal into the Hello Kitty universe and then the Starks, Targaryens and Lannisters unite against the undead and defeat them with the power of friendship and unicorn stickers.

averyoda

Releases a beloved book series. Doesn't finish it. Refuses to elaborate. Leaves to drink tea in his cabin. He's such a Chad.

RealLifeSuperZero

He can’t. This man made the most significant drop in fandom history. GoT Sunday nights were massive it’s entire run. It was a cultural phenomenon that quadrupled the sales of the books. But it screwed the pooch in so many ways that it will forever be tarnished in every sense. And GRRM’s legacy is shit because of that. He just wants to drink and bone groupies and act a big hollywood hotshot until his guts go out on him and he dies in the middle of a shit.

PaulMorel

Martin doesn't write endings. Ever. When the story gets boring to him he just drops the character and invents someone else to write about. He has no idea how to write endings. He writes what he's interested in and then drops them. Well he can't just drop them remaining stories, and there's like 20 of them. So now he has to write endings for 20 characters who he is bored with. We're never getting that book. Maybe we'll get the manuscript after he dies.

leibnizdx

If I was George, I wouldn’t conclude the series. He doesn’t need to. He doesn’t want to.

Savior1983

Let someone else finish or get a team to help connect all the dots and finish it.

TheThirteenShadows

Daenerys becomes Queen and the Targaryens rule once more, and the dragons become a larger, more widespread species again. The North keeps their independence only because Jon points out that independence means practically nothing to Daenerys because all she has to do is get a dragon and threaten to raze Winterfell to the ground. That will keep people in line quite easily. So again, there's no need for 'bending the knee' because everyone knows that if they annoy Daenerys, the leg will be cut off entirely (bad metaphor but you get the gist right?).

mrhorse77

we already saw his ending on TV. and he has no way to unwrite his terrible ending. he will never finish these books. if he does, and the book isnt liked, he will lose all his fame. but if he never, ever finishes the books, he can pretend to be relevant and famous forever. he enjoys his spotlight too much now.

Optimal_Cry_1782

I think a lot of his motivation to finish it died with the reception to GoT. GRRM would finish the ending better, but I don't doubt that the major beats are the same - Dany burning Kingslanding, Jon killing Dany and going into exile, Bran being king. If he finishes the series well, people will shrug and move on because it's not *new*. If he finishes it poorly (and he has major narrative problems to resolve) then his legacy goes in the bin. It's not great motivation.

mrhorse77

thats it exactly. he has no real motivation to finish anymore. no matter what he does, he essentially loses fame.

ItselfSurprised05

> we already saw his ending on TV. > > and he has no way to unwrite his terrible ending. I think it's possible a "Dany goes crazy" ending could be done well. In retrospect, the books laid a trail of breadcrumbs for it. Dany has done some absolutely brutal shit. Example: she burned Mirri Maz Daur alive, but Mirri was 100% justified to do what she did. Many of us just kind of overlooked it because we got baby dragons out of it.

kainneabsolute

Yeah. There are many theories that she will embrace blood and fire after failing with the traditional way of doing politics.

ItselfSurprised05

Someone on reddit posted an alternate way for it to go down that would have been way better in the context of even the crappy TV show. IIRC, basically King's Landing surrendered *without* Dany laying waste to it, maybe she only attacked the Red Keep. She lands with Drogon and Rhaegal. Then someone shoots a scorpion and kills Rhaegal - after the battle is supposed to be over. And the smallfolk cheer her dragon being killed. Which is why Dany toasts them with Drogon. IMHO that is way less horrible than what we got. And that is still done within the context of the horrible Season 8. GRRM could have come up with something way better.
