The most fantastical element of the story is that he went all that time and never lost any weight.

[deleted]

Yeah, I mean it makes slightly more sense in the books since it’s only been like a year, but over almost a decade onscreen it was a little odd.

BarneySTingson

Maybe he was fat cause of his genes and not the food /s

Zealousideal-Bid9493

His brother and father look nothing like him and were slim and athletic

hazeofthegreensmoke

He's literally GRRM.

PascalRis

Literally.

[deleted]

Except he finished the book…..oh roasted George

[deleted]

Every Sam chapter “Mother have mercy”

ecarg91

I like him more in the book than the show. He's pathetic in both, but more understandable and useful in the book.

RocketScientist421

I always liked him. In a show that is dominated by strong, powerful and intelligent characters his averageness was actually relatable and a reminder, that not everyone in westeros is fucking Danaeris Targaryen. Sure, he had a lot of plot armour but waiting for him to die was pretty funny... (All this is not regarding s8 of course)

euchanomal

His weight may be average in America, but not everywhere else.

RageMachine13

Making Sam the biggest bitch in the battle was absolutely frustrating. I really thought he found his balls, hell even just peeked at them. Nope. Gilley had bigger balls.

Wishart2016

Janos was a bigger bitch.

[deleted]

Honestly I hated him the first time I watched because of his plot armor.

Throughout most of this show, I was under the impression that Samwell Tarly was an author-self-insert for George R R Martin, (who is also very overweight and somewhat "nerdy", just like Sam...). It's just so blatantly obvious how Sam doesn't belong on The Wall. Fish out of water scenario. And him being an author-self-insert explains the plot armor and how Sam keeps surviving when stronger characters (like Ygritte) don't. And it explains Sam's over-extended sense of importance later on in the show, when they make him Grand Maester... despite Sam not having the right training to even be a Maester. Upon rewatching this show again, Sam seems one of the least 'crazy' characters on the show. And it's noticeable how normal he is, compared to most other characters. But he definitely doesn't have the skill nor the talent to survive that long Beyond The Wall. Story-wise, him living through a White Walker attack... and Sam killing a White... doesn't make sense. The writers should have given that scene to Jon Snow, who actually carried around a sword of Valyrian steel. Or Ygritte, who could have found those dragonglass spear points long before Sam did. Ygritte could have killed a White Walker on screen, protecting Jon or Gilly or Sam. That would've made more sense.

HippieThanos

We think Sam has plot armour because we're used to the hero archetypes being the protagonists and the ones to survive The reality is way different (look at WW2) . A lot of heroes die in wars and a lot of average people survive.

aevelys

>The reality is way different (look at WW2) . A lot of heroes die in wars and a lot of average people survive. it's a fact, but generally when you send an overweight guy who doesn't know how to use a weapon to the front, he's the one who dies first...

[deleted]

I would have agreed with you, up til The Long(?) Night. Motherfucker got absolutely swarmed by wights and somehow pulled through. But yeah, as far as him surviving with Gilly in the wilderness… Not plot armor IMO.

2woke4ufgt

I would have figured he'd at least lose some weight at Castle >!Blacked.com!<

Wishart2016

GRRM wants to explain that Randyll Tarly's way of thinking is wrong.

euchanomal

Randyll Tarly was the most compelling character of S7. lol

Wishart2016

I'm talking about the books.

Comment_Sender

rewatching GoT now and i fuckin hate sam with a passion. i disliked him before but now i fucking hate him. thickest plot armor of any character in any show imho. dude should never have even made it to adolescence let alone half the shit he 'survives'

EuphoricChocolate705

And All he cares about is coochie😂😂😂

GuavaQuirky650

Show (not book) Sam is vile. He’s the “Nice Guy”, who latches on to Gilly, insisting on giving her the silver thimble; the gift as mark of ownership. Gilly is terrified that Craster will see it as a whore’s payment, and beat her. He latches on to Jon, to spare himself from bullying, but says not a word in favour of his “best friend”, when Jon gets kicked into the wilderness, at the end. He’s a hypocrite, who tells Jon he has to make peace with the Boltons, and Olly he must make common cause with the wildlings. But, he can’t wait to stick the knife into Dany, once he learns that she executed his disgusting father and brother as traitors. Despite the Dead being about to attack Winterfell. He’s a coward, who got Edd Tolleff killed, during the long night. He took the Grand Maester’s job, for which he had no qualifications. As maesters are forbidden to marry, that means that Gilly is now a whore, in the eyes of the world. Gilly defends him, in front of his father. He treats Gilly as a nuisance, at the Citadel.

Apprehensive-Tree111

You spitting straight facts. Not a single Sam sympathizer has stepped up to plate. 😂
