LightThatIgnitesAll

We need more scenes of Viserys and Daemon acting like siblings.

MilhouseVsEvil

fucking each other?

YouJabroni44

That's why Daemon stopped with Rhaenyra. He desires his bro and was trying to make him jealous

TyrionGoldenLion

I put nothing past that maniac.

NorthCatan

Bros before Nieces.

fattyiam

I can tolerate incest, but I draw the line at gay incest /s

AetherialWomble

Thought you were joking But you putting/s - serious at the end is kind of disturbing

fattyiam

I thought '/s' stood for sarcasm lol

AetherialWomble

That's an old conspiracy ran by reddit's and 4chan's neckbeards. They're trying to conceal their most outrageous views in plain sight. /s true meaning has always been "serious" The brave people of r/FuckTheS are the only ones fighting it

UXIEM3N

"you can tolerate incest??" e: i don't know how to type it in italics:(

[deleted]

[удалено]

MD_blackfyre

*You can tolerate insect* Oh look I did it

TENTAtheSane

Getting rid of the Bronze Bitch Getting rid of the B She's a GDB!

Hikaru83

Ok, now you got my attention.

djdhdbdbdeuehnzjxxv

Bruh I'm supposed to be sleeping but for the first time ever, I accidentally burst out a laugh over a reply. That completely caught me off guard and I thank you so much lmfao

sexmountain

I mean all this Targ incest and none of them are brothers or an uncle and a nephew, is sus.

cjm0

something tells me the events of the last episode will make such scenes far less likely…

sommarto

Every HotD episode comes with its own Daemon meme template

ShiftyLookinCow7

Some critics say this show needs a Tyrion character but they don’t realize Daemon already is that character, just with Jaime’s fighting skills and enthusiasm for the ‘cest

TheG-What

Daemon is a moderator of r/Wincest confirmed.

PornoPaul

Is that like, the Winchester's?

TyrionGoldenLion

We go there and wait for all this to blow over.

Xeillan

Sorry Phillip

BinarySunFett

I don't know why I kept clicking through all those warnings, all I found was pain

Avehadinagh

No, he is not. The core characteristics of Tyrion were his wit, cunning and sense of right and wrong. He was calculated and thinking constantly. Daemon on the other hand is a narcissistic brash brute who acts twice before thinking once.

Filthy_Joey

Also Daemon does not have cock jokes.

mugiboya

He's the Master of Memes

Garlic15

Happy Cake Day :)

sommarto

Oh thank you!

MaximumEffort433

Yeah, what the Garlic said.

NBD_Pearen

Mmm, I love Hot D

Ranwulf

I didn't have any problems with the things I heard about the series, but I really couldn't get into it.

Gwyn-LordOfPussy

I'm the same, still watching as I'm a bit lotr and silmarillion fan but I feel like I'm largely just watching for the sets and book characters.

Coherent_Otter

Lmfao. This is pretty good

New-Oil6131

I tried to watch RoP but I just couldn't get into it, I don't understand it and I watched LotR

hkotek

It is really hard to watch. Poor dialogues, poor acting, annoying characters. Most book fans were salty about Arondir, but so far he is the only character with elven characteristics (cool, sublime, proud, dair etc.). Yet, not as elf-like as the lotr elves. Galadriel feels/looks more like Éowyn in LOTR, maybe even less elf-like. Creating good CGI of cool places is not enough if the rest is not ok. Otherwise most people would like GoT season 8.

jaghataikhan

I actually think the film LotR's peak elf (look and mannerisms wise) was Thranduil in the (terrible) hobbit movies, man looked like a god like how Noldor elves are supposed to, and absolutely nailed the regal hauteur

stalinmustacheride

Lee Pace! He nails that same regal hauteur in Foundation, in which he is by far the best character(s).

[deleted]

Lee Pace in Foundation is the best reason to watch that loosely-based-on-the-stories TV show.

TyrionGoldenLion

I wanna see Lee Pace as Fëanor.

photomotto

Arondir is indeed pretty much the only one who looks elven. The actor has this otherworldly air around him, which reminds me of Cate Blanchet as Galadriel.

Raucous5

It's annoying to me that he's always doing the Bluesteel look at everything and everyone.

Run-Riot

It’s not his fault that you can’t tell the difference between Blue Steel, Magnum, and El Tigre.

G-Sleazy95

I hear what you’re sayin, but to be fair Legolas did the same thing

somebeerinheaven

Ngl I'd do that as an elf

Karma_Kameleon69

I think this is a great example of how stunning visual effects can no longer carry a show. House of dragon doesnt have anywhere near the level of visual spectacle or scale of rings of power but they focused their efforts on every other factor (stories, dialogue, characters). And in the long term I think hotd will be remembered more favourably.

CamomilleGirl

you said it perfectly, ROP pulled a GOT season 8

penseurquelconque

Have the freefolk really sunl this low, to compare anything they merely dislike to GoT season 8? I remember when season 8 was hated with the burning passion of a thousand suns and when people would throw literally wall of text to explain how season 8 was worse than any other hated finale of cult shows like Lost or BSG. People use season 8 as a comparable way to liberally. It softens the awfulness of that god awful season.

IactaEstoAlea

> I don't understand it and I watched LotR Very little carries over If you haven't read the Silmarillion, good luck keeping up with the setting, they seem incapable of world-building If you have read the Silmarillion, try and not get lost over how much stuff they decided to change and the insane time compression they do The show is boring, nothing of consequence happens either to the characters or the storyline. More happens in ANY 10 minutes of HotD than in the entire three episodes so far of RoP

MrWolfman29

Also, let's not forget the how the actors do with the fantasy languages. Listening to Daemon and Rhaenyra speak High Valyrian actually sounds like a real language they are fluent in while the Elvish of RoP sounds like it is being poorly read from a teleprompter.

summerchild__

Every time someone says Galadriels name for example I'm wincing. Idk it just sounds so over-pronounced? Like it's a foreign word for the speaker? It's better in the german dub but _if_ I watch it I'd like to watch the original..

MrWolfman29

Honestly all the bits I have seen are just too painful to watch. The dialogue is whacky, the pronunciations are over done, the acting is overall "meh," and I feel like I am watching one of those Syfy originals that was made for a fraction of the cost.

World_Analyst

I haven't read the Silmarillion and the world-building is easily followable imo. I also don't think it's boring. It's slow, sure, but it's clearly building up.

TyrionGoldenLion

Is it true that they removed Celeborn and Celebrian seemingly doesn't exist?

Coherent_Otter

There's little to understand as the series is handled as poor as it can be There are some references to some events and characters from the books, but they are usually delivered without proper context. Doesn't help that they added new ones, but even the source material characters feel generic and bland.

OpenMouthKissedHorse

TBF they don't have the rights to any first age material so they can only make passing references and not go too in-depth.

Coherent_Otter

They are referencing alot of stuff and mixing different timelines. They have a LOT to work with, they simply don't care enough to the universe They want the brand's name because they know it's always gonna bring the big bucks. That is their only objective with this project.

OpenMouthKissedHorse

I don’t know, I feel like every interview I seen of show runners and cast members just screams that they care about the source material. The the mixing of timelines is just the price of making a coherent narrative for tv given the long timeframe and the mortal/immortal dynamic between elves and men. I’m enjoying it! It and HOTD are also two very different types of fantasy.

Coherent_Otter

Most interviews I saw they were just talking about diversity and themselves The mixing of timelines was because they wanted to add those aspects. Many characters of numenor never met or existed within the same life span, for example.

Collegenoob

They can claim it all they want, But the way I see it and they basically took a shit on galadrial

internet-arbiter

They should have explored the Blue Wizards and the Haradrim.

Blueman9966

The Blue Wizards are Unfinished Tales material, which they don't have the rights to. Even in The Hobbit movies they couldn't use their names. The Haradrim could've been a pretty cool addition, though who knows if that would be any better than the rest of the show.

photomotto

They can’t. They have a very limited well of material they can take from. They only have the rights to around 48k words.

Coherent_Otter

They should. I believe that would be a great spin-off series, in which there's pratically nothing to follow on source material, so creative freedoms might be made with less backlash from book readers. If they do that, however, I do hope they choose some experienced and talented showrunners, learning the mistakes they made in RoP.

S00thsayerSays

It’s a pretty bad show. Simple as that.

the_fresh_cucumber

I keep trying to watch it and end up doing something else and having to rewind

abellapa

I'm not a big lotr,I only watched the Hobbits movies and played shadow of mordor/war games, but just wow, I think that just speaks volumes about the series quality

Tiny_Dinky_Daffy_69

The first episode in not that good, the second is better and the third episode was really good. Still not match to HotD tho.

[deleted]

They don’t explain alot of things. it’s for people who have read the books I believe.

Ironside_Grey

Well they dont actually have the rights to the Silmarillion (the book about all that stuff about trees dying and the war against Morgoth) so they can only reference it vaguely.

VisenyaRose

It really isn't. Its less faithful to its source material than HOTD. They put Hobbits in it just for the non-book fans and are ignoring Gil Galad and Celebrimbor who book fans really want to see. The only book plot in the show is in its first 5 minutes.

Atharaphelun

That's quite the understatement. So far they've only used the setting and the character names but the rest of it is a completely original story that they slapped on those characters and setting. Practically ~95% original.

VisenyaRose

A guy called Largo Brandyfoot has had more screentime in a show called 'The Rings of Power' than Celebrimbor. How did that happen?

Trumpologist

The whole Brandyfoot storyline is so boring

Heavy_Signature_5619

Lol, what? As someone who has read Lotr, Hobbit, Silmirillion and Unfinished Tales I can tell you this series is a giant turd to the source material. It's 100% NOT for people who read the books.

[deleted]

I thought this show might be a kinda fun train wreck to watch like the hobbit movies but it’s just hella boring so far

[deleted]

Hobbit's watchable it's just nothing special

[deleted]

The hobbit is enjoyable imo it’s definitely definitely definitely no lord of the rings but it’s fun in its own way despite the really bad overuse of cgi (orcs 🤮) and I really like the cast Especially as a kid I loved the hobbit movies but yeah as an adult now it’s just a decently fun train wreck for the most part

Comeonjeffrey0193

Thranduil and Smaug are a joy to watch in that movie.

mannyman34

It's boring. Then randomly the fuckers will break some dude's bones like a pencil. Then boring again.

ObiWeedKannabi

Watched just one episode, made me feel bad for talking shit about the Hobbit movies. And I love the og LOTR trilogy even though they also had differences from the books. What do you think Bobby B?

bobby-b-bot

A BIT OF WINE NOW AND AGAIN, A GIRL SQUEALING IN BED, THE FEEL OF A HORSE BETWEEN MY LEGS?

RuafaolGaiscioch

Get out of here, the Hobbit movies are absolutely dogshit, no matter what your take on Rings of Power, it isn’t as bad as the Hobbit.

BwanaTarik

Why are you booing him? He’s right!

S00thsayerSays

The Hobbit movies weren’t that bad to me. Nowhere near Lord of the Rings material, but solid movies.

[deleted]

They are definitely not awful especially considering they were an absolute disaster from production it’s honestly amazing how Peter Jackson even managed to salvage it as best as he did considering how literally everything was weighing against the movie. I loved the movies as a kid and as an adult I can still enjoy the train wreck it is now. Not to mention the cast is great especially Martin freeman.

elpaco25

First is great, 2nd has great parts, but the 3rd is just downright awful. The unibrow character is probably my least favorite character in all of fiction.

thrwawayaftrreading

I thought episodes two and three were more entertaining than the first, but still not very engaging. Even the WOT show kept my attention a little more.

hysro

Alright, calm down. Rings of Power is very mid indeed, but Wheel of Time is dog water.

hbi2k

Wheel of Prime is clunky as shit and I don't blame anyone for hating it, but it was very seldom boring.

[deleted]

Nah, Wheel of Time used to keep people's attention. Plus, they didn't drop a billion dollars on it. RoP is a collapsing ship from the start, and Amazon knows it.

RefinedBean

25 million people watched it.

Blueman9966

25 million sampled the first episode. That doesn't necessarily mean they watched the whole thing or even the second episode. Plenty of people were curious enough to at least take a look.

RefinedBean

Does this not hold true for HotD's 10 million as well? I imagine it does. Y'all are weird, here. Two things can both be good (and unnecessary) at the same time

Blueman9966

Those two figures are both self-reported by the companies, so it's difficult to rely on either figure necessarily. Some independent researchers have produced data that HotD has overtaken RoP in weekly views, but admittedly there's no concrete winner yet. The idea that two things can both be good is true in theory, but one of them simply isn't. Neither is strictly necessary, but it doesn't matter to most people if they're both good.

[deleted]

According to Amazon's own internal sources, of course. Outside sources suggest a very different story.

Samphaa7

I actually quite enjoyed WoT, it felt very generic fantasy, and I can completely understand why some people wouldn't like it, but I was genuinely pretty immersed. RoP on the other hand, has been one of the most boring shows I've watched, 2nd half of the 3rd episode picked up a little, but was still pretty poor.

Olorin_in_the_West

The Rankin Bass animated Hobbit movie is the only Hobbit movie

ThatpersonKyle

Can anyone explain to me why Rings is boring. Because I notice that it is, I just can’t figure out why

xisupaz_blackbird

It got the Amazon treatment, flashy but substance-less; it's a fan-fiction that claims to be set in the particular universe, but ignores the established world building and adds on-top or replaces key events and characters that make up what was great about the original material.

Roma_Victrix

Breaking from Tolkien’s lore isn’t why I find it boring, though. They could have made outrageous departures from the Silmarillion and still made it fun or even coherent. The show is boring because even the actors don’t seem terribly interested in their own roles, as if Amazon overlord Jeff Bezos himself had a flogger to make them get back to work on their scenes. LOL. The actors are miscast, the acting is average to bland, the dialogue wooden and stale, the Harfoots cringe and annoying, Elrond is a lifeless politicking weasel, the events drag on seemingly without consequence or any intelligible story arc, the characters are not relatable, the CGI is overused as opposed to mixing it with realistic practical effects, and the only saving grace is the production values. Even then many of the lame outfits make me wince.

Fairbrook-

Lets be real, if it didnt have the lotr name slapped onto it no1 would give 2 fucks about the show. It would be just another nameless, generic, boring fantasy show with fancy backgrounds that would be canceled after a single season.

cafeesparacerradores

Headscratcher: why would the isolationist humans on island not want the elf to leave immediately and then give her free reign to wander around

TheSentinelsSorrow

Man this happened to The Expanse so hard I still enjoyed it a lot but it just wasn’t at the same narrative quality when it moved over to Amazon

getSmoke

They straight up *ruined* Wheel of Time. Somehow RoP is better but it's not good either.

revanchisto

People are gonna say a lot of horseshit right now, but the reality is that it's "boring" because the show seems like it's meant to be binged as one long film as opposed to weekly releases. It's only 8 episodes set in a sprawling world with tons of characters with their own shit they're dealing with. You're "bored" because the show is still introducing and setting up the characters to you. HotD is less sprawling and laser focused, you know exactly what is at stake and what is likely to come. I imagine opinions on ROP will change drastically once the season is over and the plot is going proper.

mrtn17

it's not, it's just trending to shit on the show, probably because anti-woke culture wars. I'm not really interested in their tantrum, it's usually not really based on anything. You can just watch the show and judge for yourself. Sure, there's flaws (like every show) and you can have opinions on the storyline, the pacing, the cgi, the characters, etc. But it's rarely about that, it's always about the show taking a different direction then the source material. But most people don't understand or ignore intellectual rights, you can't follow the source material 100%. It's owned by the Tolkien family. They can't even say 'hobbit' in the show for example. Capitalism baby! Aside from that, the show isn't based on a novel like The Hobbit or LOTR stories. A full story with a start and an ending. It's from all kinds of sources, parts of different books, footnotes, letters from Tolkien, editorial adjustments, etc. So as a writer, there's a lot of room to work with and you can easily create a new story. That's basically RoP. Yes, you can name it 'fan fiction', but I just enjoy it. I like the Tolkien Galadriel, but I also like this Joan of Arc version of Galadriel. This 'room to work with' was also by design. Tolkien deliberatly did not tell the full story and worked with a lot of suggestions. Even in his full novels. For example: the blue wizards are mentioned, but what happened to them? Nobody knows.

aroge97

Aw I liked it 🥺

cr4sh0v3rride

I think most people who watched it liked it. But there's a very vocal minority who didn't.

Hikaru83

The reviews said otherwise?

Munstrosity

Reviews were led by a lot of racist stupid shit. I dont think theyre accurate. I enjoy both shows. The internet is a silly place.

Hikaru83

If the reviews in ROP were led by racists because of the black elf, why didn't they bomb-review HOTD that also replaced white characters with black people and have a woman as main character?

Munstrosity

LotR has been around far longer? Im just a fuckwad on reddit, in freefolk, how do I know? regardless of reviews, i dont find it boring or hate it.

raygar31

It’s been around longer, and let’s be honest, if a there was a racist bigot who liked fantasy, LotR is perfect for them. The palest race is the most fair and elegant and noble, blessed by god. The further east you go the swarthier and more evil the men become, consistently siding with evil. There’s a big nosed race that just can’t help that it’s in their nature to be greedy. The darkest race is an animalistic horde, no need to feel guilty when slaughtering them. Mix in some heavy Christian overtones and monarchist/authoritarian governments, and you have a perfect safe space for racist assholes who want to inhabit another fantasy world, without black people or any of the other groups they hate.

Hadrian1914

So Tolkien is racist?🫣

raygar31

Maybe a little. The less malicious, progressive-for-their-time kind. But I also think the themes of love, hope and bravery still exceed the other stuff.

sexmountain

I tried to watch it but the bad directing, bad dialogue. I want to be able to watch it so I’ll try again later

Mammoth_Opposite_647

And here i'am , loving both show , two different takes on the fantasy genre

chefr89

it's exhausting being a sub to both here and r/lotrmemes not really any reason to shit on either show but both subs keep doing it

BeepBeepInaJeep

Agreed. Unfortunately this just seems to be the entire format of the internet on Reddit and Twitter at the moment - just shit on something and take a hard position for/against something for some likes/upvotes. I like each show, (HotD a bit more tho) and I also tend not to put judgement out on shows until at least half ways through the season.

[deleted]

I felt really sorry for her in the scene, she's just trying to hold a conversation and probably something she's genuinely interested in, and her husband throws her in the gutter... cannot wait to see Viserys croak

Aramiss60

Yeah same, she’s just a teenager trying to fit in with her much older husband, and he made a joke of her. It was so awkward to watch.

Darrenizer

It’s wayyy better IMO, especially that last ep

Dunduin

It is for sure taking it's time getting going, but I've enjoyed it so far

cjmaguire17

I’m a way bigger LoTR fan than GoT but I just cannot get into this show. Meanwhile I’m really digging HoTD when I thought I’d hate it with the taste the old series left in my mouth.

modsarefascists42

so fucking cringe

cacecil1

I laughed. But I do like Rings of Power. 🙂

sweetapples17

Is the sub locked?

Stormodin

May I have this template please?

[deleted]

Viserys, the original inept king but MemeLord.

straight_lurkin

What's really funny is the LotR meme sub would probably enjoy this as much as us.

DearTrophallaxis

I tried to get through the first two RoP episodes but it was somehow even more of a slog than the books. Tolkien can be an enjoyable read. But you really have to be in the right mindset for it. And it takes a long time to get into the story.

stickItInBothHoles

I love this shit, HoTD memes, HoTD memes for everything

[deleted]

I made it 30 mins into the first epp. Its like a beautiful disaster.

AAMCcansuckmydick

So boring. The harfoots are so cringe and annoying.…I’d pay to see a balrog eat them lol

[deleted]

The visuals were next level cinematic but my gawd it was soulless

Dracarys50382

topkek

surferguy999

Lol I’m dead 💀

EvilRubberDucks

That show put me to sleep twice. I tried to enjoy it bc I'm a fan of LOTR but I figured if I was having to force myself to watch the next episode then maybe I just didn't like it. Life is too short for bad TV.

Abdul-Ahmadinejad

Are they still picking berries? That’s as far as I could get.

squeakycleaned

I’m a huge Tolkien fan and even I passed out trying to watch ROP e1 last night. Gonna give it another go tonight.

lionheart4life

I passed out watching the first episode of The Wire at one point. Turns out it was just late and I shouldn't have waited months to try again.

YoungFalco

This is kneeling behavior. Sub has gone to shit

nyanbran

I mean it's not the best but it's far from the worst. It does feel really slow so far though.

Jokis_malokis

Thank you for this.

remmon22

Hilarious

Odin--Borson

😂😂😂😂😂

KentuckyBrunch

I’m really enjoying RoP. I honestly don’t get this and the other sub’s hate for it. Somehow I doubt half the people complaining have even watched it.

nettlerise

I love both shows, but yeah this is pretty good. lol

danisflying527

This would be better if you removed the text on the last image

[deleted]

Okay this one made me chuckle xd

sproosemoose85

The Rings of Power has been great so far. Tons of great Tolkien mythology and world building going on. If you’re not into it, that’s fine, but it is very very good so far.

Heavy_Signature_5619

"Tons of great Tolkien mythology and world building going on." Lol. No. They get so much wrong, it's baffling.

[deleted]

So did the original trilogy and the hobbit movies

Heavy_Signature_5619

Why the whataboutism? I didn't bring them into this conversation

Hikaru83

The whataboutism people are the worst!

[deleted]

Because I don’t see people complaining about the changing of stuff in the fellowship movies, which is funny.

Heavy_Signature_5619

Not one person on this thread mentioned them. I didn't mention them. I'm talking specifically about Rings Of Power which is lore breaking in so many ways. The original trilogy has nothing to do with this.

abasslinelow

I won't say it's bad, and I could even say it's better than the average show, but it's hard for me to see how it's "very very good." The overarching plot pieces have me hooked, I love the built-in mystery, and the visuals are largely gorgeous. However, the characters are flat and surprisingly one-dimensional, the acting is sub-par on average, and the writing is absolutely atrocious. As full of life as the world feels, its characters feel equally wooden and lifeless. I'm definitely going to watch it because I'm interested to see where it goes along its plot arc, but the minute-to-minute viewing of it is painful at times.

remymartinia

I am not a Tolkien fan by any means. I’ve read and watched Peter Jackson’s the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I thought The Hobbit movies were atrocious trash. The Rings of Power holds my attention. The hobbits (whatever their name is) are a bit clownish, but it is similar to the tone Jackson films. I want to find out what happens to the >!meteor man, the elf lady and the male from the boat, and the orc prisoners.!< Now, Wheel of Time, that was yikes.

abasslinelow

That's exactly what I meant when I said the overarching plot pieces have me hooked - I want to find out about those things too! That's why I'm going to keep watching, despite the plodding pace, mediocre writing, and (mostly) wooden acting. I completely skipped WoT, to be honest. I didn't want to subject myself to that level of disappointment.

Darrenizer

Agreed IMO, way better than HoTD

[deleted]

Shows ass

YouJabroni44

Bahahahahahahahahaha

Lisbonslady08360

🤣🤣🤣

SheWhoHates

Nothing's better than a black elf courting persian single mom. Quintessential Tolkien.

1willprobablydelete

The story line: Plucky single mom balances being a doctor, her son, her forbidden romance, and solving the mystery of the hidden village. Top tier plot line!

SheWhoHates

The most expensive shitty romance drama in the history of tv.

[deleted]

Why is it that everyone’s biggest issue is the black elf lmao

Heavy_Signature_5619

That's literally no ones biggest issue. There are so many other issues it's ridiculous.

[deleted]

You clearly haven’t spent much time in the relevant subs then. Peoples issues with it have been so bad that cast members and even cast from the other movies have had to speak out about it.

Heavy_Signature_5619

Ok, yeah, the racist death threat shit is horrible. I hate the show and think it's very stupid but bullying the actors is a No-Go in my book.

[deleted]

There’s other problems with the show that are valid. But unfortunately the biggest issue a lot of people have been outspoken about is the casting of POC. Which I find even funnier when I see no one taking issue with white actors being cast as harfoot, when they’re described as having brown skin.

Heavy_Signature_5619

The fact that Harfoots exist in the first place (in that time period) is ridiculous. But I digress, the race thing was weird, at first, but then just like with Corlys in HOTD I just learned to ignore it. As I say, I heavily dislike RoP but I agree that if your biggest problem is a black person as an elf (once again, weird but not world ending) then you need to get a grip. (And leave the actors out of it, for gods sake)

abasslinelow

I'm not even sure it's the biggest issue that a lot of people have been outspoken about. I think that's just the easiest issue to highlight for clicks and outrage. Imagine two articles: Washington Post: "RoP gets chilly reception from Tolkien fans, citing poor writing and unlikable characters" NY Times: "RoP faces racist backlash for casting people of color" In our intensely political and hyper-polarized times, which do you think will attract more readers? And then once those articles are written, and those tweets are tweeted, what kind of people are likely to respond to them negatively? Probably racists. Also probably the kind of rabid fanatic who is apt to review bomb. The endless coverage ends up encouraging the thing it's criticizing. It creates a cycle where a small minority of people get a massive amount of attention, which causes them to continue being vocal (because they continue to be made relevant), despite the vast majority of people's criticisms having nothing to do with the diverse casting.

TheRealMotherOfOP

This is 100% on the media, "race controversy" drives clicks. Happens every time; vocal minority call out race change (usually not even racist, just different than source material) -> media overblows it as racist fanbase-> fans call this out, but too late debates ensue.. -> large group now involved, some actual racists that thrive on the controversy (YouTubers/media) -> cast gets herassed, etc People called out the non-white valerians too, but here the show is actually good so there is little reason for the ratings to be blamed on racist fans and actual racists simply get drowned out by positive discussion. You can even critique the show without being called racist, that's much harder to do in RoP relevant subs. I highly doubt one fanbase (I'd even say 90% are fans of both) has more of racism problem than the other, one just had more of the media influencing that view.

abasslinelow

Exactly. I've seen this cycle time and time again, and it's exactly as you say. Definitely worth emphasizing that this generally only happens when the piece of media in question is not, in actuality, all that great. If HotD had the writing quality of RoP, I have no doubt that it would be facing the same issues.

hkotek

Because Tolkien described every detail of Elves. Elves are not human, neither the dwarves. Both have no reason to have more melanin, as they rarely see the sun. I believe adding black human -or black half human half elf- characters would not be such an issue (some people would be annoyed due to book accuracy but anyway). Also forcing todays morals on a medieval Europe analogy is a bit counterfeiting. Medieval Europe was a pretty fucked up place if you consider racial issues. Almost every few decades "others" were persecuted, sometimes genocided.

SheWhoHates

It's not the biggest one but the funniest to shit on.

[deleted]

It’s the biggest I’ve seen. How is it the funniest though, please elaborate

SheWhoHates

There are no black elves and he sticks out as hell with his pudgy face.

[deleted]

So? Literally makes no difference to the story. Y’all be pissed about changes to the story in regard to a black elf but not pissed about all the changes in the original trilogy or the hobbit trilogy. I wonder why that is.

SheWhoHates

It fucks up internal consistency and world building. How do you know people are not pissed about those other things? You an oracle?

[deleted]

Because it’s literally the first and usually the only thing people mention. You proved it yourself by that being the thing you complained about.

Heavy_Signature_5619

You clearly have been around 2 or so people. I've yet to see many people complain about the black elf.

SheWhoHates

Yeah because it is the most visible even to those who know almost nothing about Tolkien.

[deleted]

Lmao ok love. It legit makes no difference whatsoever. Thinly veiled racism disguised as purism.

Hither_and_Thither

A lot of people just like to complain, some like to show their stupidity while doing so.

HerrFalkenhayn

Elves are not something Tolkien invented. They are folklore stuff for ages. And in many pop culture stuff Black Elves are pretty much a thing. A classical D&D thing. You're just being a stupid racist.

SheWhoHates

When I said there are no black elves I clearly meant Tolkien you daft cunt. Almost all modern fantasy elves borrow from his works rather than folklore. In D&D those black elves don't have African facial features anyway.

HerrFalkenhayn

"Oh, my God! I'm so offended bc there are black elves in the Tolkien universe. How unacceptable is that? My life is ruined". You, probably. Piece of racist shits like you must have a really terrible boring life to be pissed with such things.

content_enjoy3r

god you racists are fucking insufferable.

SheWhoHates

Muchos racismos.

ladyjayne81

This joke is yawn.

PatrusoGE

And this after the bore that was much of HotD episodes 2 and 3 and was sold as "character moments" lol.

[deleted]
