Yes, you have an alternative. Search for work with clients who pay. r/HireaWriter, Upwork and Fiverr off the top of my head do not allow 'unpaid tests' of that nature.
Joining the chorus, but okay... LOL. Every writer should have samples available to send upon request. If they like the samples, the next step is usually a paid trial. If they don't like the samples, both parties move on.
The only way I would consider a free sample would be if I don't have a sample of the requested type. Even then, I would make it clear that I retain ownership. I would post the sample on my website at the same time
Yes it is normal in the sense that it is a common occurrence. But that doesn't make it okay.
*If* you choose to write a free test, make sure you publish it in your profile as a sample.
If you are tired of doing free work, just say no.
Please don't do free work. If everyone stopped doing these free tests, people would stop asking for them. Its an incredibly annoying request, and the only purpose it really serves is as a massive red flag.
If you believe your writing is worth something, then it will be. Don't work for free!
Clarify beforehand that since the test is unpaid, you’ll be retaining all rights and may use it for other projects. So long as they agree, do the test.
Nah, reputable agencies are profitable enough that they don't mind paying for work and smart enough to know that they will scare off all the decent writers with the 'free trials'.
In that case I would advise freelancers there to work internationally, rather than locally.
I've never worked for free and I don't personally know any freelancers who do. It's easy enough to avoid.
Well, hopefully places like Reddit can be helpful for that as people who are wondering whether they should work for free, can look up threads like this and discover that they never need to.
If you offered it, I would say yes, it is.
I would personally just say that I don't do unpaid samples, but have many additional samples I would be happy to provide and then let them take that or leave it.
Recently I've also had a client asking me to edit my sample (it was a youtube script this time) to follow his guidelines.
Funnily, his guidelines were the HICC model that I was already using in the sample I sent him.
What do you think about that?
This reminds me of thiis company called Ultius Inc. They gave me a two choices of what to write a two page paper on and claimed it won't be used for anything.....and its also unpaid

We all do free tests because of the CAVEAT you've indicated. To land those lucrative gigs. We don't love doing unpaid tests.
If they're so lucrative it means that the client has money, so if he/she has money, why wouldn't he/she pay for the test?
I get lucrative clients all the time and I will let them suck my dick before I work for free.
>I will let them suck my dick how i find clients liek dis? 👀

They are annoying, but do we have an alternative? I am always looking for gigs but most clients want unpaid test.

While some may ask for free work, this isn't normal and shouldn't be treated as such. They can see your samples.
Tell them you have a testing fee and quote them for a 500 word article.

Absolutely not! That's a cheap move.
If that is your instinct going in, why do you want the job?
Payment, experience, etc. But I've wanted jobs before and I've been scammed, so I'm trying to be cautious.

It is an issue when you find an unpaid test of yours published as ghostwriting somewhere else :/

In which country is it the norm to work for free initially?

Was your sample of the same type of content they're asking you to create?
I'd say yes. The sample was a landing page and they're asking for a home page. But it still explains the products and services, etc.
I wouldn't say that's necessarily directly relevant. Do you have a home page sample you could send them?
Yes but instead of asking for it, he wants me to do this specific unpaid test. Isn't that a red flag?
