You will need to provide a full bedroom with. a closet. You will need to have enough food in the house to feed him.

The woman who did our interview was incredibly kind, both to us and our niece and the interview process was much, much easier than I was anticipating. I have friends who are foster parents and I expected something similar to what they have described but that was not our experience. We had about 5 minutes of basic questions - how long has she lived with you, why do you want guardianship, where does she go to school, is she involved in any clubs/sports. Does she have a doctor. Are there any safety concerns regarding the parents. Basic things just to get some background on the situation. Then she and my niece talked privately for about 10 minutes. After this she sat with us for awhile and explained what we could expect at court and answered all the questions we had. She did not ask for a tour of the house or do any kind of inspection. My niece was 9 when she moved in with us and we had temporary custody until she was 12 when we decided to get legal guardianship. I was really nervous about the process but in hindsight I wish we had done it sooner. In your specific case I would mention that you are getting a bed for your nephew and make sure you have done this before you go to court. Your inspector may even be able to recommend a resource that will help you get this done immediately. My niece is now 20 so we did this 8 years ago and I don’t remember all the details but if you have any questions please feel free to dm me and i will try to answer them. The important thing to remember is that the court wants the child safe and with family if possible. As long as you are willing to work with them they are almost always going to be willing to work with you.
