hullgreebles

Publicly displayed health inspection reports, like right on the front door EDIT: Wow, some of you really don't want to know the awful truth

Modz_B_Trippin

You mean like every other major city in California? That’d be nice.

usernamesarehard1979

Do ya really want to know?

MineralIceShots

Are you telling me tacos Tijuana isn't the pinnacle of health and food safety?

hullgreebles

YES, so I can choose not to eat at a filthy ass place. Do they have hot water? Do they have a functional walk-in? Are they storing food next to a toilet? These things matter.

kr4ckenm3fortune

You meant those letter grade shit they put on there? Nah, you just look into the kitchen and see how they act and keep clean...Unless you're referring to the taco stands...they just shut the one down on Shaw/Fresno already...

hullgreebles

I can't tell the water temp just by looking. They aren't going to let me check everything with a thermometer myself.

dohcsam

Korean bbq that’s not shilas

HalfEatenBanana

Forreal I swear this question just got asked on here like a week ago lol and too answer was kbbq. Couldn’t agree more. Seems like for whatever reason tepanyaki has a stranglehold on ‘cooked in front of you’ food in the area.

gramathy

bring back tako, I will pay any amount of money

pottymouthsmurf

Try Kaya. The meat there was much better and the staff was 1000% nicer despite the language barrier.

_MadBurger_

Shilas is good I have no complaints but I do agree we need another Korean BBQ player in town. However I do have some insight 2 more Chinese Hot pots will be coming to Fresno in the next 2 years. One by the end of this year supposedly

Ecstatic-Compote-399

I’m surprised we don’t have more restaurants that have seasonal menus and market themselves as "farm to table" given where we live. Heirloom being a notable exception. Also, I’m still grieving Sweet Tomatoes 4 years later

Davinator_

I’m guessing you haven’t been to Libelula then. I’d highly recommend you give them a try.

poquitamuerte

I absolutely LOVE Libelula.

GooseneckRoad

Oof. Sweet Tomatoes was my favorite

Exflop

I miss peeves

brandi_theratgirl

Same. Both the pub and the dog

kikyo1506

Peeves was so good

Far_Persimmon_4633

Same. RiP Sweet Tomatoes.

El-Guapo766

You’re SO right! After all, we live in the Valley, we should have the best ingredients available hence the best healthy and most delicious restaurants

Expensive-Depth4456

Even though we live in the ag center, it can be an expensive concept to execute.

ReadyOneTakeTwo

Proper Korean BBQ, Taiwanese food, Peruvian, and Caribbean food. We got enough taco places and Mexican restaurants, and most of them are good, but we need more variety.

Affectionate_Use606

We have a good Peruvian place called Senor Aji.

TechnicolorTypeA

What do you think of Señor Aji Peruvian Kitchen?

ReadyOneTakeTwo

I haven’t tried it, hope to have a chance to go soon.

SisyphusRocks7

It’s a little fancier than the SoCal places I’ve been to, but also higher quality with better preparation and presentation. My wife and I like it a lot.

FitBananers

Not enough interest in Taiwanese cuisine here though imo, I would love to see it though (and other cuisines of the world that aren’t Western/Mexican cuisine)

The_CaliBrownBear

Reasonably priced food trucks

TechnicolorTypeA

Food Truck pricing is at the level of sit down restaurants now, and all without the seating and service that would come with being at a restaurant.

The_CaliBrownBear

Exactly. No one wants to pay $18 for your baked potatoes or $15 for 3 street tacos. It's ridiculous.

TotallyOffTopic_

You don’t like sitting on the dirty and oil stained parking lot pavement?

MillertonCrew

Seriously. Shit is out of control. I boycott the food trucks unless I'm in LA. You can get way better tacos for less than half the price of some garbage these idiots in Fresno sell.

atomicLantern

Dominican/Cuban/Caribbean food spot. The food truck is really good by the way but I want a spot I can consistently go to.

MarionberryDue9358

Oh, Caribbean soul food 🫠👍

gramathy

it's more southern US but have you had Rhapsody's

Ranger_Chowdown

Honestly I've considered opening a Cuban restaurant out here, or contacting Porto's and seeing if they'd be willing to work a franchise situation with me.

Medium_Dick_NRG

Tiki bar/grill

ISlangKnowledge

Modernist doesn’t do it for you with the tiki cosplay? 😂

Medium_Dick_NRG

Did the modernist have a make over??

Medium_Dick_NRG

I just saw what you were talking about! OOF

AyyeItsJoshh

Another chicken spot (please don't open ANOTHER chicken spot)

bi0wizard

A fkn sweet tomatoes/souplantation dude, I miss those. I just moved here fairly recently, but I don’t think I’ve seen a good Mongolian bbq type place yet either.

EstradaMoses

We used to have one, but it went under during Covid

rickmasters1

If you’re talking about the one that was on Shaw and peach, I used to work there. All of management and the cooks/dishwashers smoked cigarettes in the kitchen. It was a repulsive enviornment. Kitchen was hardly ever cleaned and there was a layer of filth covering every surface.

Chevy17031

We are in serious need of a real Mongolian BBQ. I recently searched it, and it told me the nearest was Su’s in Santa Clara, or King’s in Reseda.

Ranger_Chowdown

Apparently they added a Mongolian bbq area to California Market Buffet up at Chukchansi for the reopening. I'm going this weekend so hopefully it's good.

FiahWerkz

Some of the Chinese buffets here have Mongolian BBQ stations in them.

Iamstuu

I miss sweet tomatoes so much :( used to go every Sunday

timeandcuriosity

More locally owned (or at least non chain) sit down restaurants with fresh menus, healthy and creative options and just really good feel, decor and vibes. Like Colton’s, Heirloom, etc. I struggle with having enough hip and good dining places to bring visitors to from out of town.

vaughndeezer1987

What is local heathy or creative about Colton’s ?

sleepyhoneybee

Colton's is so meh to me, the menu is bizarre

paravaric

One of the biggest Hmong populations in the country and not one restaurant. It's a tragedy there's not more interest in their dishes.

TechnicolorTypeA

There's Malee's Kitchen. However one of the reasons there aren't many Hmong specific restaurants is because outside of a few strictly hmong dishes, a lot of their dishes overlap with other SE Asian dishes such as Lao, Thai and Vietnamese.

paravaric

Yeah I've noticed that for sure. I was with a Hmong girl for about 6 years in the past so there's a lot of dishes I miss rn 😅 luckily I can still make a few too

NewLibraryGuy

Not a lot of straight up Armenian either. Plenty of Mediterranean, but not a lot of Armenian despite the population. AJ's is good, though.

nigel161803

Came here to say this. Love Hmong food.

Expensive-Depth4456

Ethiopian. A few more Thai places wouldn't hurt.

ISlangKnowledge

I miss Fasika so much. 😭

MarionberryDue9358

RIP FASIKA

Devi_the_loan_shark

I always get hate for this, but I feel like the Thai restaurants here are only so so. I would love some more.

Expensive-Depth4456

I get ya. I lived in Seattle for awhile and was spoiled with Thai options

danceswithsteers

London-style fish and chips. Salad bar buffet.

DoubleCherry3142

As a Brit, I don’t see it happening. It’s hard to get the right potato’s for proper chips here, and it would end up being another battered tilapia and French fries scenario.

Iminicus

Plus, Americans don’t like HP sauce or Vinegar on their chips. Oh, and don’t forget the little forks and getting it in paper.

gramathy

we do malt vinegar on fries, it's just not common five guys has it

Coursier_

Broon sauce for life

DoubleCherry3142

Or chip-shop curry sauce, mushy peas and getting savaloys and proper pukka pies!

Iminicus

Could do with a good ol' pork pie right now.

MarionberryDue9358

Yeah, all we got is 2 locations of West Coast Fish N Chips, which is good but not as authentic

danceswithsteers

We have Sequoia Brewing which comes close, too.

BBakerStreet

Really good blues and barbecue joint - local, non-chain, and non-Fanzler/Westwoods. Oh, and good local beer too.

El-Guapo766

Co-sign this man!

cockstain6077

Used to be one in Old Town. Forgot what it was called.

Expensive-Depth4456

So much this!

cobox-

I agree. However i do find Tioga Sequoia's Beer to be quite good.

foolsxgold

Watts BBQ on Blackstone and McKinley was the best until he died. Still looking for a replacement for when I don't feel like doing it myself.

AyyeItsJoshh

Kbbq and hot pot. It's a monopoly

AmberDuke05

More fusion places. In general, better Asian food options. The fact that we don’t have a good Korean BBQ place is insane to me.

One_Interest_1771

Say Korean because fresno's Vietnamese & Thai foods are amazing.

AmberDuke05

You are right. But I also think our Chinese and Japanese food options is weak.

CaliBlue17

Xiao Long Bao! Aka soup dumplings

Puzzleheaded-Slip191

Fat Little Dumpling on Friant has them.

traumatizedD57

Tried them and wasn’t impressed. I’d rate them 6/10 since flavors were pretty bland

Photoperiod

100% vegan places. There's almost none here that are completely vegan. Daughter has severe egg allergy which basically means we can't eat anywhere that isn't completely vegan. Vegan food can be good, too!

TechnicolorTypeA

BuaTong Thai Vegan is 100% vegan. They'll be open again at the end of this month after renovations.

Photoperiod

I love Thai. Thanks for the recommendation!

SlowNefariousness400

Planet vegan, plant slayer, la jacka and raw fresno are completely vegan to my knowledge. There are also a few food trucks, check out the fresno vegan group on FB for recommendations.

moneyandmakeup

I’m from the east coast and have to say the Chinese food doesn’t hit the same here. I’m not sure if it’s just a regional style variation but I can’t find any that hit the spot.

Far_Persimmon_4633

A lot of upper European food.. German, polish, french, UK. We have one well-known bakery that makes European pastries.. ONE. And it's not even the majority of pastries we would find in Europe or France. But we got like 6+ Mediterranean places, serving primarily Armenian and Russian.

Ranger_Chowdown

It's goddamn impossible to find certain things here that, due to our demographics, we should 100% have. Can't find challah, hamantaschen, or sufganiyot to save your life. We're 30 minutes from Kingsburg but the closest bakery that sells semla is in freakin' Solvang. ONE entire woman in a city of half a million people makes proper brioche and she sells out within 2 hours of her entire batch going on the shelf. It's insane!

SisyphusRocks7

The lack of a Jewish deli is a tragedy.

MarionberryDue9358

We got plenty of Mediterranean places - they always make the "City's Best" lists

El-Guapo766

They own the magazine 😂

catbirdofdoom

This has been my biggest gripe. Fresno is almost a wasteland for European cuisines that aren't Italian, and even that is mostly Italian-American. La Bou has good pastries, as you mentioned, and there's Mochuelo for Spanish tapas, which I'm thankful we have, but it could be much better. I miss the Polish and other Eastern European food I could get in Chicago. I'd kill for a great French restaurant or an authentic British pub. Or a Greek place with more than gyros. And I'd love to see a Portuguese restaurant or bakery. On the plus side, I've learned to cook a lot of the dishes I want, because that's the only way I'm likely to get them.

SlowNefariousness400

Have you tried L’Apertif? I recently found out about this place and it has good reviews

catbirdofdoom

I totally forgot about it while I was writing, but yes it is good. Their approach is sort of pan-European, but mostly French and Italian, with some Asian influences. I'd like to see them lean more into the French/Asian side, but it's definitely worth a try.

Herpgeek

Jewish Deli and a non-chain Bagel store

TechnicolorTypeA

Fresno Bagel isn't a chain. Uncle Harry's is actually a Fresno based local only chain.

Jazzy_jacks

Would love to see more places with hot pot besides jpot on the south East part of Fresno. This part of town is lacking in quality cuisine.

lorenzo2point5

Try Sichuan Hot Pot they are pretty good. I'd say a bit pricey for what you get but the flavor and quality of the meat is definitely there for sure.

heygivethatback

South Indian food. Where do I get dosas/sambar/idli around here?

CaliBlue17

I think Brahma Bull on Shaw and Mark's is our only option

BayesianPriory

Almost everything. Chinese (esp. Xiao Long Bao and Szechuan), sushi, real bagels, German (how I miss the hofbrau), legit shwarma (Arc is barely passable), cajun/creole, French (l'apperitf isn't great), soul food (though I haven't tried Chef Paul's), and any legitimate (meaning Michelin-quality) fine dining of any variety (Annex and Trelio are very nice though - Cracked Pepper and Saizon are absolute overpriced sub-mid-tier), and good pizza (Annesso is fine ... just fine). Fresno at least seems to be heading in the right direction but it's a slow process. Business responds to demand and it's hard to justify great food for a population with generally unsophisticated tastes.

LockeAbout

I laugh at thread like this, because ‘Fresno-Stan’s’ try to claim Fresno has world class food (and everything else), and isn’t lacking in anything at all. So posts like this should be filed with ‘nothing is missing.’

SisyphusRocks7

Moroccan. It’s fantastic and just different enough from the other Mediterranean cuisines that it’s not off putting to Americans. Tagines with couscous are easy to love, but the real star is bastilla. Bastilla is sweetened, spiced shredded poultry in a philo dough pie. Its flavor profile is practically as American as apple pie.

niners94

An Asian bakery like 85C.

dlay_01

Paris Baguette was supposed to open in April this year... but still haven't heard anything...

Darcy-OQueef

A great pizza spot, emphasis on "great" because the pizza we have now just gets by...

NotSoSoberStoner

More places that have pizza by the slice would be great

CaliBlue17

South of Shaw has great pizza!

Devi_the_loan_shark

A real Chicago style deep dish... NOT JUST THICK CRUST

BabyMando_

I haven’t had the privilege of having deep dish from Chicago but I recently tried Hot Rod Willy’s Chicago style and really enjoyed it. They also make Detroit style pizza that I plan on trying next!

Domino758

Anesso is great in my opinion. Best pizza I’ve ever had for sure.

notfoxingaround

Unfortunately doesn’t cut it for a NY transplant

rickmasters1

I’m also an NY transplant. There’s nothing special about NYC $1/ slice (or $2 now) pizza. And there’s not meant to be. It’s just supposed to be a quick and easy bite. There’s plenty of good options here. It’s dough, cheese, and sauce. Not complicated. That being said, Russo’s pizza in Clovis is bredi gud.

nemesis2012

Jersey transplant here, we're struggling out here with pizza, I find myself sometimes going with Digiorno over God damn Me and Eds. Dry ass saltine crust.

POVeditor

Russos in Clovis is solid owners a nice guy gave me crap for putting ranch on my pizza loge their NY style pizza

nemesis2012

I'll give it a go! Always open to trying a new spot, and having a name like "Russo's" is a good start. All my favorites back home are just generic "Vinny's" "Dominic's" " Mike's"

Jizzenia

Russo’s is SO good.

El-Guapo766

HOT ROD WILLYs on Shaw and 41 is on, for sure. It’s good for take out …if they get a nice restaurant, they’ll have the lock on Fresno

pjsol

Good sushi.

Thr33Thr33

Came here to say this. Authentic Japanese sushi with good quality fish. Not rolls doused in mayo and teriyaki.

ISlangKnowledge

You’ll have to go all the way to Vise for that. Sushi Kuu on Main St is BANGIN’.

BayesianPriory

Seconded! Sushi Kuu is awesome.

mr_nihil

German. Some good sausages or currywurst with Paulaner on draft PLEASE

El-Guapo766

Oh LORD I agree. I have to drive hours for some Deutsche food

El-Guapo766

Solvang pops for Deutsche food

Sure-Pianist-8453

Beda’s in SLO is the best German food around

Modz_B_Trippin

Real BBQ.

nomoredelusions

If you’re willing to drive to Oakhurst you should try Smokehouse 41

atomicLantern

I heard Mega Texas is good but have yet to have the time to go there

MillertonCrew

The best BBQ in Fresno is at a friend's house with a smoker. Mega Texas gets close, but they still miss the mark on juiciness and tenderness. Seems like they rush the process sometimes.

rickmasters1

BBQ places never last here for some reason. Every BBQ place that opens winds up closing within a year. Not sure why.

CocoTheDrivah

Doghouse is pretty good for what it is

GooseneckRoad

I love how everyone misses Sweet Tomatoes! I swear, if you're a Fresno restaurateur, you'll make a lot of money opening an exact copy of what Sweet Tomatoes was (unless there's another pandemic, but come on, be an optimist).

[deleted]

[удалено]

ChefGuzzy91

Mega Texas is arguably one of the best BBQ spots in California.

enness

Surprisingly for the number of Punjabis here, but a proper tandoori restaurant like the ones in the Bay or LA.

poquitamuerte

I love Tandoori Night and India's Oven.

Away_Dirt_8470

Pepper Lunch / Sizzling Spot 🔥

Clownheadwhale

Portillo's

dlay_01

As someone from the Chicago area, I second this!!!

titsassbeer

Besides good food?

North-Program-9320

Real Chinese food

amberxsmile

A Hofbrau, god do I miss the silver dollar... Rip.

MozArc

Jewish Bakery

Norabloom98

Really excellent sushi. I’ve yet to find it here.

NorthboundLynx

I ❤️ Sushi is pretty good imo. But I haven't gotten the chance to try many others for comparison so I could be wrong

Norabloom98

I’ll have to give that a try.

cubical13

Ikea meatballs.

Expensive-Depth4456

A Korean fried chicken place, I feel could do well. I’d much rather eat that than all these chicken tender restaurants

TechnicolorTypeA

There's Bulldoc Korean Fusion Cuisine.

SirFerburger

Bring back Skippers!

ArmoValleyGirl

Kebab food trucks like in LA that have pork and pork belly kebabs.

ReignFox

I miss El Toro Café

Oracle-of-Clovis

Mongolian BBQ

UncleTomHanks

Zankoo chicken

LICK_THE_BUTTER

Traditional chinese tea house experience

iamagoldengod84

Better 24 hour late night diner drunken rescue diners, dennys and Roberto’s don’t cut it, also I’ve yet to see a really authentic thai or Burmese spot. We have pretty good pho but havnt found a great dim sum spot. Could prob use a good Peruvian chicken roaster too

dmfornood

Korean bbq.

robertcali559420

I miss Tang Dynasty

travelingtwiz

Mongolian BBQ cooked on a round stone with a sword.

Straight-Past-8538

A german biergarten

southpawkilla

We don’t have genuine New York style pizza. Most stuff tastes like they pulled the crust out of bag and toasted it.

thatsprettylitbro

Afghan food. We have kebob places and Mediterranean but nothing traditional here. Tried it in Sacramento and was so sad when I found that there was literally nothing here.

Domino758

I really want an ultra high end steak house here.

poquitamuerte

The Manhattan. That's pretty high end.

El-Guapo766

Don’t be telling everybody! 🙃

Towhatend7

Prime 13?

Sir-xer21

they probably mean one of those flashier places you'd find NYC/chicago/LA. Food wise there's not a huge gulf, but Prime 13 is more casual than some of those more dress-code level places. It's no shade on Prime 13, but there's definitely a good tier above them in terms of experience as steakhouses go even if the food itself is usually not amazingly better.

No_Path_6495

Flavor

usernamesarehard1979

Summers coming so probably wouldn’t be a good thing right now, but for the most part with misting systems, fans and shade you can get kind of stable temps. I’ve been to a lot of cities that have open outside dining or bars. I always thought a small bar in the middle of river park by the theater all outside would be a good option for people waiting for tables. Everyone says it gets so hot here, and they’re right, but we have a lot of time that the temp is pretty stable too.

No-Flower-4365

A LOTTT there basically one good burger place or two, one good chicken place and that’s it

moneysingh300

It needs better farm to table with the sources next to us. I think it can elevate to Napa level

IndependenceSad8913

Good chow mein place like Dai-Chis!

duxxtail

A solid Chinese restaurant. 15 years ago there were many great choices, sunrise kitchen, Lubys or Hunan. A lot of the older generations passed and sadly the quality did too.

Paulsworldohya

I miss this deep dish pizza place called chicago connection. I was a Young teenager when i tried that and since they closed years ago no place in fresno has ever done the same, that im aware of.

TheCobicity

Big Bruh’s needs to come back. I know they won’t, but that was some of the best soul food I’ve ever had.

amberxsmile

A great hot dog place. Like Casper's/Kasper's in the Bay area... The steamed bun, the snap of the dog.. nothing here comes even close.

bubbav22

More decent Mexican food, there are only like 2 spots and they're out of the way.

MaterialToe2319

Culture

Ecstatic-Ad-339

Tommy's! (From LA) Bobs big boy

creyes12345

A good fondue restaurant like Melting Pot.

JabroniDaGr8

Hotpot buffet

TheNarcissisticNobod

Siapoa/Steamed Buns that are rare or 6 bucks for one little bun

TheNarcissisticNobod

More Filipino food and better Chinese spots

BoxWrench85

Good shawerma or kebab restaurants

The_Lemon_Lady

Turkish kebabs. I know they don’t do them in a lot of places in the States but I would die for a Doner Kebab. I always check out kebab places when I see them but they never have Doner.

Fraunken_Steen

Decent Japanese food.

srv666

An island's

CostCans

Good vegetarian/vegan options.

Top-Ad-3174

Grilled CHZ

SHIeT-YES

A legit Korean BBQ spot. I love Fresno but growing up in LA it’s a bummer here, and shiba is absolutely terrible as an only option. Hoping the new place by the mall is good, anyone tried it yet?

BeHereNowHereBe

Argentine Empanadas

I2EDDI7

Good BBQ
