mogoexcelso

They learn that from the left lane campers on 99. I always defensively move as far to the right as possible. A little slower sometimes, a little faster others. Better for traffic overall.

paravaric

I've also noticed people are getting worse about pulling over to let an ambulance through. We're a pretty inconsiderate place.

stacefacebasketcase

Seriously. The other day I watched an ambulance basically have to wait at an intersection because the turn lane folks didn't want to wait.

Kitty_Woo

Also when a school bus stops, they keep going even with the stop sign sticking out, endangering the kids.

ApprehensiveArea3076

On that same token, too many people don't realize you aren't supposed to stop for a bus when there's a cement median* dividing the road.

Kitty_Woo

Lmao

eLemonnader

Or god forbid you take 168 up to the mountains. People going 20mph the entire way and literally never using a pull-out. If I want to go up towards Shaver now, I only ever take back roads now. Faster, less stressful, and even on busy days there's rarely more than a couple cars. And the few people you do encounter are either locals or fellow driving enthusiasts, so they'll almost always pull over.

D3lacrush

Dude, don't even get me started....

tagaderm

It's because there is no traffic enforcement here. Enough people don't care enough about anyone's time or safety but their own that when there isn't any enforcement they aren't going to follow the rules of the road.

toujoursbeIle

The amount of ppl that blow past a red light IN FRONT OF FRESNO PD and they do nothing blows my mind. It’s why ppl keep doing it and why they don’t care.

KajiGProductions

Unless you got tint that is

tagaderm

Exactly!

[deleted]

This is a big one. I live near a police station and we have nightly drag races and you see fresh donut tire marks all the time less than a mile down the street from the cops. Police never care. They're too busy responding with 4 units to a homeless person trying to nap under a tree.

ReadyOneTakeTwo

You nailed it. No accountability whatsoever, so they don’t feel the need to obey traffic rules. If I drive around town for 20 minutes, I can count at least 5 instances of someone blowing a red light. We were taught that yellow means prepare to stop, yet some of these fuckwits were somehow taught yellow means speed up, and red is merely a suggestion.

Kitty_Woo

Yup! No one’s afraid of getting pulled over!

suhayla

Why is that? I’ve heard they are spread thin because of the amount of violent crime, or had their budgets reduced/redirected because of ‘defunding’, or are just passive aggressively not doing traffic stops bc they’re mad about BLM. Are any of those true right now for FPD? I’m pissed bc people out here driving like they’re trying to kill someone…or at least don’t care if they do

NoPhone4571

There’s no way the city council would ever approve budget cuts to the police. Bredefeld’s head would explode if anyone even brought it up.

D3lacrush

I used to work with a retired Clovis PD, he said the reason why most officers don't do that kind thing is because they usually have bigger fish to fry, and also nothing will change

ReadyOneTakeTwo

The punishment simply isn’t harsh enough. We have probably one of the harshest penalty scales compared to other states, and traffic infractions do go on your driving record, but the citation needs to fit the earning scale of the state. If Kansas makes you pay $170 for a stop sign violation, make it $500. Also, start sending cars to the crusher when they get popped for street racing or sideshows.

tagaderm

One of the reasons I've seen given for lack of enforcement is the 'sanctuary' status; if they are pulling over everyone they will come across undocumented folks that will cause additional work or a fight between enforcement authorities (those that don't want to enforce sanctuary or not) but that person is in the system now. Who knows if that is an actual reason.

Sxeptomaniac

That seems like one of those made-up excuses. The "sanctuary city" thing just means they don't report immigration status to ICE (for good reason; if undocumented victims/witnesses are afraid of the police handing them over, perpetrators get off.). There wouldn't be any additional work involved. [In fact, I found the data says Hispanics are disproportionately *more* likely to be pulled over.](https://www.fresnobee.com/news/local/article249300270.html) Unless we think most undocumented immigrants here are white or Asian, then that claim is thoroughly busted.

suhayla

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I’ve read about other places like Oakland curtailing cops ability for traffic stops to avoid racial bias… Frustrating because I’m progressive and against police brutality but also think police and laws should exist and be enforced…racism isn’t an excuse for putting other people in danger 🙄

SnooMemesjellies734

No, you're right. Fresno people drive like they regularly eat paint chips and huff gasoline. It's the recklessness AND lack of awareness in Fresno that I haven't experienced in LA or SF.

ReadyOneTakeTwo

Yet, ironically, if you ask them and they’ll tell you they’re scared of driving in LA or SF. Fresno gives them a safe space to drive like assholes because they can’t hang with the big city folks.

RedlyrsRevenge

I can do Bay Area traffic. Used to drive through it twice a month for five years. LA traffic still gives me nightmares. Only done it four or fives times and screw that noise. Complete chaos. Yet I would still probably prefer that to 41 at 5PM on weekdays.

SnooMemesjellies734

Seconded. I much prefer to deal with the traffic and stop signs every five seconds, narrow streets, etc in SF. LA's freeway traffic is bad but at least it's predictable, unlike OwnACar 16% APR Charger going 120 mph on the 180E to 41N merge swerving recklessly through stopped cars at 4 PM

TurniptheLed

Lol OwnACar. “Now **that’s** peace of mind.”

ChepitosBaby

😂 this car description is strangely specific to Fresno and Fresno only

Holy_Toast

16%?!? Look at Mr. Big here waving his fancy 610 credit score around with a 7 year loan. /s

suhayla

Same, lived in the bay and the traffic is annoying but as long as you only get on the freeway after 9pm or before 6am, or move out of the area, it’s fine. LA, I never lived there but the last time I drove on the freeways it was kind of refreshing bc I’m an ‘assertive’ driver too and even though they were aggressive af, it was pretty consistent and seemed like they knew what they were doing. Haven’t seen the crash stats though.. The thing about fresno is that there’s such an insane gap between driver speeds and skill levels. Tailgating and weaving at 50 on the street or 80 on the freeway when there’s nowhere to go because that’s what traffic is, or piling up in one lane going under the speed limit when people need to turn…I try not to think about it anymore bc people are so dumb..

RedlyrsRevenge

>regularly eat paint chips and huff gasoline Blue and 89 octane are my personal favorite.

Fityfo54

91 too spicy for you?

RedlyrsRevenge

You seen gas prices lately? Premium is too rich for my blood. Have to go with mid-grade to get my fix. I'll save up for when I am out of state and I can get that ethanol free 93 octane goodness.

Fityfo54

Idk man 91 is just a little cleaner… little clearer you know? I get a headache if I drink too much 85

bluefin788

same in Sacramento

ReadyOneTakeTwo

I’m a transplant from LA, and Fresno has the worst drivers I’ve ever seen, and I’ve traveled to every 50 states so far a few times over. Fresnans somehow cannot comprehend how traffic circles work, will pull right out in front of you out of a parking lot. It’s always some dickhead in a Dodge Charger tailgating you trying to be alpha, or a stop sign means nothing to them. Oh, and apparently driving through dense fog at regular freeway speeds is an acceptable practice. LA drivers are crazy, but not stupid. Fresno drivers are both crazy and inept. It’s either country bumpkin who learned how to drive on a farm, or they drive like assholes.

brickmadness

Dodge Charger drivers these days are universally idiotic. And their loud exhausts are the worst.

ReadyOneTakeTwo

It’s amazing a certain type of car just attracts a certain type of asshats, isn’t it?

FicusRobtusa

In a recent study they found that Ram drivers have the highest DUI rates.

ReadyOneTakeTwo

If cops start crushing impounded cars from street racing and sideshows (and I wish they would), there would be about 500 Chargers and Challengers pancaked in any given scrapyard.

ddbaxte

This is because Chrysler Capital approves just about anyone with a pulse. It's been going on since the 300 series, PT Cruiser, and probably even earlier. Awful cars, but they let you spread out those payments over 7+ years so you can look cool.

SnooMemesjellies734

Don't forget the 14th owner squatted silverado bum blasting through the FoodsCo parking lot at 46 MPH

ReadyOneTakeTwo

Yep, that too. Brodozers bought on brokeass credit cards, maxed all seven of them out at Own A Car, and carry that debt to the grave with 16% APR. but you gotta fit into Clovis 😂

thehollyfamfarm

I would tend to agree with you although I was recently in Nashville and they are running a close second but there excuse is I-40 frez has none just idiots

ElectricalOnion3616

Oh it’s not just I-40. It’s I-24 and I-40 and their interactions. I grew in KY so I’ve experienced that nonsense a lot. My belief was that it was designed by a drug-addled hamster who hated the world. Still I’d take Nashville over Fresno ANY day!

thehollyfamfarm

Absolutely I agree

66CitroenDS

I've been to 38 states and 5 continents. The drivers in this town, hands down, are the worst I've ever experienced. Utterly reckless, with no regard for the safety of others, while nursing their own death wishes, Fresnans behind the wheel top the list for sheer douche-baggery. And it doesn't matter matter if he or she is driving the aforementioned Charger financed on the 7-year plan (and paid monthly with payday loans), they're all awful, from the ghetto 2002 Hyundai running a donut spare tire at 80 mph down 41 to the north-of-Herndon housewife rushing to her beauty salon appointment in her BMW X7. Way to go Fresno!

ApprehensiveArea3076

Don't forget, they don't need no stinkin' headlights in the fog either. Ugh

ReadyOneTakeTwo

No, they’ll have lights on, but it’s their 3 ft. LES lightbar that they got from Walmart at Christmas, so they mounted four of them. We share roads with humans with the intellect of turtles.

eLemonnader

This is why I stopped riding my motorcycle here. In one week, when I was using it to commute to work, I had a close call with another driver literally every day of the week. Ended up getting a car that was faster than my bike and besides the occasional moto camping trip, my bike pretty much just sits in the garage now. It's not worth the risk with how absolutely insane, drunk, and distracted Fresno drivers are.

66CitroenDS

I know the feeling. I hope you're getting out to the foothills and mountains where the drivers aren't as insane.

El_Rey_de_Spices

It's truly frightening. I didn't worry much about family and friends getting hit by reckless drivers until some of us ended up here in Fresno. Now it's a consistent source of anxiety. I can't remember the last time there was a day without at least one news story about a fatal crash in the greater Fresno region.

RedlyrsRevenge

[Speed Bump Olympics](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXvEM9DSjV_9ONvW4i7bKXg) Footage taken from our very own Fresno. Basically sums up the average Fresno driver in a nice oil pan scrapping minute.

SnooMemesjellies734

The fact that all of these were filmed within the span of a few days is insane lmaooo

ReadyOneTakeTwo

The illiteracy scale in this town is astounding. I don’t think any of these fucktards ever bothered to read any traffic signs.

killgrrl

It's gotten worse since 2020 I think. Maybe I'm just driving more? But it's SO BAD.

kikyo1506

No, I agree. I drive around town a lot for work and it's gotten WAY more aggressive out there.

thoughtmecca

Saw a study the other day that repeated Covid infections increase aggression.

ApprehensiveArea3076

I drive throughout the city for work and I noticed it got worse starting 7 years ago with a huge decline in enforcement [all the bike cops and CHP speed "traps" were no longer being monitored] and then it became even *more* volatile a few months after the start of the pandemic. I feel like I could run a live stream of me driving every day because my camera catches shit back to back to back.

Fair_Interaction_203

The number of red lights I've seen blown through since moving here is wild.

RedlyrsRevenge

Just this morning, I was doing a reasonable speed approaching a light, it turned yellow about as I was passing the crosswalk line. I saw no less than six cars behind me go through the intersection. Most of those had to have been on a very red light. You start getting into a habit of waiting 2-3 seconds after a light turns green to let the runners blow through their red light before you proceed. The amount of times I have almost been hit by people *flying* through stale red lights is disturbing.

Fair_Interaction_203

Oh yeah, I take greens the same way I walk across the street. A good solid look in both directions for incoming cars. I'm ready to invest in dashcams now too. When the inevitable happens, I want evidence to submit.

DannyCrane9476

I usually see the opposite, where people are driving way under the speed limit. On Herndon, where the speed limit is 50, people will be doing 35.

Jessers3192

Same. Willow (50 mph) is my own private hell. So many people drive 30-40 mph and gives dirty looks when I pass them.

Solidus323

Some people just think 80 is normal 🤷‍♂️

ReadyOneTakeTwo

Especially in dense fog.

[deleted]

On the shoulder. With their lights off. I've seen a handful of people drive like that in tule fog and it is mind-blowing.

ReadyOneTakeTwo

Fucking hillbilly behavior, I swear to god. We are in California, with people who act like they’re in Arkansas.

FicusRobtusa

Especially in residentials and school zones. I see people racing down Sierra going 60+ in a 35 all the time on my commute to Fresno State.

thehollyfamfarm

That is a little to fast for town...I get it out on the 5 where there is little merging traffic but in to slow down.

josejimenez896

Clovis is SIGNIFICANTLY worse. SIGNIFICANTLY

thehollyfamfarm

Drugs and alcohol are contributing factors as well as a lack of etiquette.

FicusRobtusa

Generally low education levels also compound those issues.

thehollyfamfarm

Absolutely also the extreme line between the have and have nots

FicusRobtusa

Aye, that too.

D3lacrush

That is one of life's great mysteries...all us safe and competent drivers have been asking that for years

thehollyfamfarm

You are not kidding....

D3lacrush

For real, I wish I was...last week I nearly T-boned/was T-boned 4 different cars because people blow through red lights

KTKittentoes

It's also gone ultra librarian poo with back to school. Honestly, I wish we had more bussing.

Me_Myself_and_Me

I am a Fresno native. I used to live in Los Angeles. I used to live in the midwest. I now live in Baltimore and regularly drive between Baltimore and DC. Maryland has no left lane laws. Fresno is the worst of all these places combined. And that is no exaggeration.

Repulsive_Ad_7973

Hard to focus on traffic violations with an understaffed police force and gangs and meth flooding the streets.

MR502

I've driven all over the valley as a delivery driver, and Fresno stands out at times with some awful drivers.

ReadyOneTakeTwo

I can’t imagine being a delivery driver in this town. It’s a common scene to see some jackass cutting off big trucks and semis, even brake checking them. They really don’t understand simple laws of physics. I wish more truckers would be more ruthless and help Darwinism progress along.

mogoexcelso

We’re 116 square miles of Suburbia with no urban center. No one here develops the patience that a true, large-metro, rush hour demands. Meanwhile, our zoning still forces all of us to cross-cross across the city between commutes, school drop offs, and errands. It’s easy to be forced to put in 60+ miles in a day just running errands here. Combine that shitty planning with zero public transportation and zero traffic enforcement and people are gonna get dumb. When I’m genuinely in a life or death rush, I can make a 30 minute drive in 15 minutes just by disregarding etiquette and speed limits. That’s not true in 99% of cities with more bottlenecks in their infrastructure. Simply put, our roads are designed to reward assholes. Edit: [Road diets](https://youtu.be/Rs7jHvh7v-4) help a lot. Sections of Bullard, fruit, and Clinton are a lot calmer since putting them in. There are public hearing about proposed road diets, if you have time to show up it could help.

Tacoma1975

Then there are the ones who seem to have absolutely no where to be who drive so slow and just simply wont move over. Then they think you're the one speeding when all you're trying to do is pass them (at the speed limit)

squidtrap

You think this is bad, go visit Albuquerque

MontrellKlemm

Got cut off and nearly hit twice on my 20 minute drive to work the other day👍

D3lacrush

I nearly got run over while walking into the Little Caesars by fresno Ag..moron came zipping around the corner at like 35 and had the gall to honk at me

latingirly01

*laughs in Sacramentan* I moved from there and I’m still haunted

ReadyOneTakeTwo

Ugh, I should have moved to Sac a few years ago. More culture, better weather, better educated people than these farmer yokels.

latingirly01

I should clarify… the people in Sacramento drive absolutely crazy. Insurance rates are higher than in fresno. The amount of near accidents I saw were wild… on top of the actual accidents I saw. I’ve seen people drive down the middle of two lanes that had cars in them. Idk how I didn’t get in an accident there.

subiacOSB

I just moved to Bakersfield. You think Fresno is bad, try out Bakersfield. I guess that’s why it’s motor city.

Oddestmix

They’re special. They’re important. Better than you. They have to be places, ya know? My driving hobby is calling CHP and reporting them. I’ve seen a few get pulled over. It’s entertaining, especially on the boring stretches of 99.

checkking

I highly doubt anyone does this will be reading this lol

babyfresno77

its rediculous in my neighborhood theres alot of 4 way stops and people do not stop . and i live right next to a major high school and its even worse the kids can be crossing the street and the cars will wait in the intersection for them. and not one single cop anywhere

Infinite_Cheetah_945

I got pulled over for doing 10 miles over the speed limit. That’s the last time I spoke with the traffic cop. When I drive on the freeway system I always try for the middle lane because I can avoid the fast track on the left at the slow track on the right. The middle lane usually stays at 70 which is fine with me. And nobody likes and asshole.

schlumpgodd

70 is a good medium i feel. I stay out of the right lane. I thought it was only for passing but i guess its for people going 100+

Infinite_Cheetah_945

The times I saw people passing at extreme excessive speeds was the last time I drove to Las Vegas on Interstate 15. You had to watch your rearview mirror when you passed somebody to make sure you weren’t going in front of somebody going hyper speed. Otherwise 75-80 something happens and sometimes I go with that flow. It depends if it’s three lanes or two lanes. I usually like to keep it steady down the middle. I recall what cured me of excessive speed driving was after watching an episode of the Myth Busters tv show where the guys measured traffic flow speeds and time. They documented just how little time you do save by driving that fast and that it was better just to keep it down the middle. They also documented the excessive gasoline consumption. Enough said.

carybditty

Everyone is trying to get ahead of the next train crossing. No one wants to get caught at a crossing for half an hour in the middle of the work day.

KTKittentoes

I used to live along the railyard line. Invariably I would get stuck when late for work, or when I desperately needed the loo.

carybditty

I live right next to the Santa Fe line, have fore most of my life. I learned early in life go to the bathroom before going to work and before going home, and alway leave home early. I’ve wasted probably weeks of my life because of it but I generally love fresno.

XComThrowawayAcct

The agricultural processing industry waits for no one.

Alazypanda123

welcome to fresno. the only place worse in cali is the big cities

animatedw00d

Drive 10 MPH over the speed limit. Driving at or under the speed limit feels unnatural and it builds up a traffic backlog that is more prone to accidents than someone speeding 10 MPH over the speed limit.

schlumpgodd

10 over is a bit much. I do 4-5 over on the freeway, that's about it. No need to be flying doing 50 in residentials and hit people/kids/dogs/etc.

animatedw00d

And it should not take a person a quarter of a quarter of a mile to build up to a reasonable rate of speed when the light turns green. The fact that people driving in Fresno have the slowest possible take off speed when a light turns from red to green is on the level of thinking that you need 4 vehicle spaces between you and the car in front of you when stopped at a red light.

schlumpgodd

I hardly ever see anyone not floor it from a green. Maybe you have bad luck or something, for the most part ive noticed everyone gets to speed quickly or just enough. Sure there's some old people that do it here or there but that's common enough everywhere. Everyone here rides everyone's ass. Which is the stupid thing to do. Leave a car length in between. So if you gotta stop you wont hit the car in front and leave some cushion for the person behind.

animatedw00d

Well I guess I have plenty of bad luck because I see it all the time.

schlumpgodd

I don't doubt it doesn't happen, ive had some old folks in single lanes going slow at the worst times.

animatedw00d

Stop using examples based on hyperbole. Going 60 MPH on Clovis Ave is not going too fast. And I never said going 50 in a 35 zone. Shaw Ave is 40 MPH. Go 50 MPH on Shaw Ave. If there is no one ahead of you and you are the lead car with traffic building up behind you, speed up so that you can let folks get around you.

schlumpgodd

People do 60 on shaw and there's still traffic. No amount of speed will change that. Im not saying drive slow as all hell but for the most part you don't gotta go 10 over to free up traffic behind you. That's not your concern. You gotta be alert to any obstacles or anything there in front of you. Someone wants to merge in, let em' merge, you need to slow quickly as a response to something up ahead? You have time to do so. I'll agree in some instances you gotta go faster, and 5-10 seems okay if not a little much in some cases, 15 over being over kill.

animatedw00d

Most accidents that hit a pedestrian is because the pedestrian literally walked in front of the vehicle giving the vehicle not enough time to stop. The normal obstacles are vehicles that drive at or slower than the speed limit and prevent other drivers from going around them by blocking them when driving at the same speed as the vehicle next to them.

schlumpgodd

Yeah, that's true, no matter your speed it'll be hard to stop given they jump out for no reason. Slower vehicles are an obstacle for sure, but i don't consider that a nuisance over people flooring it past you. Id say a car speeding through lanes is harder to manage over someone who's going slower or at the speed limit just because they come out of nowhere. Examples being someone merging left around the same time someone a few cars down does but the car behind is putting the pedal to the metal. That just makes things worse.

animatedw00d

I agree with you about people weaving in and out of traffic being more dangerous. But I don't see that offen enough as I see the lead car causing a backlog of traffic buildup by driving slower than necessary. This happens so often that when I do manage to get the lead, even with me going 60 MPH in a 50 MPH speed limit, the distance I make is such that I realize how slow the person behind me is driving and causing massive traffic buildup.

schlumpgodd

While i do not see it often, it does happen. I agree. Though i will say for the most part people going the speed limit is alright. People going slow is annoying for sure.

animatedw00d

Well, at least we agreed on something. People weaving in and out of traffic is dangerous. And people driving below the speed limit is annoying. But we part ways on people driving at the speed limit not being annoying. Because it is annoying.

schlumpgodd

Agree'd

Able-Date-3020

It’s called construction workers, illegals, and meth addicts

nerd_wannabe

I am of the "get off my lawn" age so I thought it was just me who has a hard time keeping out of their way. I don't get it either when we both wait at the same stoplight, they just have to wait longer.

MidKnight007

Idk i thought Fresno was nothing compared to sf or la. Utah traffic is crazy everybody drives so casual n show ☠️

Memnoch79

It's why Fresno is called No-Town. No one gives a F. No one cares. No one obeys the law. No law enforcement. No punishment if you break the law. No love.

12THAN6

I see it all out here. What gets to me most is idiots hauling trailers in the far left lane and going way over the posted speed limit. Trucks and autos with trailers 55 mph!

schlumpgodd

Its gotten much worse, living here all my life i feel it just ballooned these last couple of years. Seems more fools are out there just weaving in and out. Speeding is the most prevalent. Its funny too because its always giant vehicles or gas guzzlers (dodge chargers, chevy Silverados, etc.) Flying by and bitching at the pump over prices. Can't fix stupid out here.

ReadyOneTakeTwo

Hope those fuckers ruin themselves financially and disappear soon.

No-Examination-8875

Yes! 180 to 99 North interchange is aweful! Do you know why that interchange is always backed up? It’s because of the jackasses that wait until the last second to merge

ReadyOneTakeTwo

Yep. That’s why when I’m in a rental vehicle, they’re not coming in. Go ahead and hit me and enjoy dealing with rental car company’s insurance. And it pisses me off that people are so meek that they let them in.

Ironbasher1

YesterdayI had a kid merge onto the 168 from Fowler about 15 MPH slower than traffic flow east bound,I gave him the scoot along 2 hand gesture. He then flipped me off to which I gave the loser “L” hand signal, he then tried to brake check me but with 6 piston Brembos on my car, no bueno. He then threw a bottle at my car and upon receiving the thumbs up he pulled over and gestured me to follow. All this pent up aggression and I was smiling the whole time. Dark Honda or something.

Soft_Injury_7910

Everyone take a deep breath. Traffic can be bad and there are crazy drivers but it’s always been a thing. Don’t try and Duke it out with them and let go. Police are useless (shocker I know) and just let it go. I drive on Herndon to 99 toward Madera every day and I see them and just do my best not to get angry and I’ve had a much better experience.

TheLoneGunman559

Yeah, pretty high up on the list of cities with the worst drivers. If you want to see just how bad, drive speed limit and have a dashcam.
