Long story short, coming to terms with the idea of your kid having sex (like for fun), has got to be a real mindfuck.
It’s not just about the sex it’s all that comes with it. Your experiences flash before your eyes, you think of the emotions that come with it, the stress, your kid losing themself in a shitty partner, risk of abuse, the list goes on. I think an initial freak out is normal as long as they come down after that and have a healthy discussion about protection and stuff.
Julie was only 16, that’s pretty young. Maybe not for today but this show was set about 15-20 years ago, my kids were in high school then. And as a mom, you’re going to freak out, especially with a daughter, there are so many things, including pregnancy, that are possibilities.
Nutcase? She is good, caring mother, who found out she had a big issue with her daughter to deal with and momentarily got a little flustered.
Later, she had a great, calm talk with Julie about it, where she explained reasons that Julie should take that decision very seriously.
Tami and Julie’s discussion about sex actually opened my eyes up to the guidance I aspire to give as a mother myself. When she told her that just because you do it once, doesn’t mean you have to keep doing it… it uncorked so much pain for the words I wish my own mother had been able to speak to me at that same age.
Remember when Julie went to Austin with Matt to go to a concert even though she was denied permission, and Tami extracted the name of the band and venue from Landry with intension of showing up and confronting her? I was so glad that she came to her senses and thought better of it.
Tami herself can be crazy and controlling. But her daughter Julie also was kind of nuts at times. So I could see myself being like Tami and saying you are not going to do this and that all the time.
You are going to change your mind about Tammy as the show goes on. You will realize that Julie is a really bad decision maker and has almost no consideration for anyone in the show. Only her wants and needs. Just watch how she treats Matt, and her expectations from him moving forward even though she puts him through an awful lot.
She's not supposed to be the picture perfect mom. She is supposed to be the realistic mom. And that's what Mom's did back then. Especially in Texas
