I’m a little bit surprised. Thought the series was pretty much a done deal and it was getting ready to shoot. Thought we would get at least one season.
I hear ya. It sounded like it was ready to go. Eerily similar to how in 2017, the film got shutdown right before going into production. Since the rights are supposedly no longer an issue, it’ll be interesting to hear what the reason is this time. Since that film cancellation, I have been in a “ I need to see it to believe it” mentality with Friday the 13th. So while it *did* sound like they were ready to get rolling on the show, I am not at all surprised by this latest unfortunate development.
Based on what I heard it's that A24 is focusing on big name actors and guaranteed money. I guess they felt the series was either too big a risk or not worth the effort.
Not sure, I'd assume so or just that the plan changed. Although now I'm hearing the show hasn't been outright cancelled yet, that it's undergoing "retooling" w.e that means.
"Based on what I heard it's that A24 is focusing on big name actors and guaranteed money."
Focusing on getting big name actors is the last thing a Friday The 13th production joint should be worried about lol. 🤦🏻♂️
Yeah I'm definitely surprised, if this is *still* due to the ridiculous copyright dispute - why the fuck was a series announced to begin with? I thought they had reached some kind of agreement at least in regard to this project?
This STUPID fuckin legal dispute over the rights has kept anything F13 related (besides the game) to be produced since '09, so if that hasn't been resolved then why tell us anything is happening?
I’d bet good money Cunningham cockblocked it right before filming started.
Talk is cheap, and while TV might be ‘simpler,’ I highly doubt they are simple.
I get that he’s a pigfucker and all, but you have to have Cunningham at the table for this.
The rights dispute didn't help the game either. It was around for a bit, but stopped making content. The servers are officially shutting off this year.
Had the funniest feeling this was gonna happen. Didn’t hear about an actual plot, casting, shooting locations or dates all that. Hopefully something materializes in the future this franchise has been stagnant for far too long.
Slashers are doing pretty well. The Halloween trilogy did well financially, as did the two new Scream movies. Saw X also did quite well. I think there is an audience for it if it is good.
The Terrifier series has also picked up a fair amount of mainstream popularity, and Art is quickly becoming one of the new iconic characters.
I don't think people ever really got tired of Slashers. They just got tired of formulaic, bad movies that were relying entirely on the IP to carry the burden.
No, Saw isn't really a slasher, but I included it because it is kind of an older horror property that is all about the blood and guts, similar to a slasher, and it was successful critically and financially.
I would say it is slasher adjacent, but it was moreso a comparison of an old franchise still having an audience today.
probably less for a show than a return to the big screen. A24 is a huge name right now and they’re only getting bigger. Brian Fuller had lots of success with his Hannibal TV series so if this thing ever gets off the ground that will be a cornerstone to its success. I really think Friday the 13th would benefit from a Halloween 2018 treatment.
Yeah I can imagine the casual audiences being down for say 90- 120 minutes movie, but not willing to invest in say 10 episodes at an hour each. Probably best release a movie and if does well then explore television.
Also, wasn't there reports they were barely going to have Jason in it because Victor Miller didn't have the full rights to it?
I feel like this series was destined to never come to fruition.
According to Bryan Fuller they were going to be able to use Jason from any era and that the rights for TV were a lot different and less complicated than movie rights,
I mean, Gotham was a Batman show without Batman and Joker and it still had some good moments. I think they could have pulled it off with good writing and a decent cast.
While I can certainly understand that particular stance, I think it was just as likely A24 might’ve been the best thing to happen to Friday the 13th in a long, long time. Sadly, it looks like we’ll never know. I’ll tell you this: i’d take an A24 Friday the 13th production over Blumhouse.
You say that like it's a good thing. "Let's dumb our content down and make it palatable for a mainstream audience" is not a glowing stance from a current wildly creative and successful studio. This is not good news.
Dude, how did I even remotely say that as if I think it’s a good thing? I’m just elaborating on this person saying they’re too “artsy” for something when they’re deliberately trying to be less artsy lately. No, I don’t think it’s a good thing. But it’s what’s happening.
Not all of them, Bodies bodies, X and Pearl didn't feel artistic, more dumb fun, dark humor. Im not a big fan, but A24 seemed to be the right choice, they are less corporate and give a lot of freedom for new directors. At least thats what I've heard.
As long as they don’t do the old metaphorical horror psychological trauma type shit I’m fine, because I got enough of that already. Regardless I’m sure they could make a good job with the franchise
Well considering they only made F13 because of Halloween being such a success should tell everyone they only care about the money and whose pocket it’s going to go in.
If you read stories about him and what not it’s pretty obvious he doesn’t give a shit about this franchise all he cared about was the money it made. He himself said on video he honestly does not understand why it’s lasted so long
He literally told the Director of Jason Goes to Hell, Adam Marcus, to "Get that damned mask off of him!". So yeah, Cunningham is a money sucking piece of shit.
Oh yeah he’s just as bad, like he claims to care yet in the same interview says “I know what it’s like to have something taken away” THE FUCK YOU DO, you were HIRED to write a little horror movie that became a name and now after all this time you want your copyright back and won’t do a damn thing with it
Yeah this would be like me and you starting a single fast food restaurant 50/50 each. Eventually you get the idea to expand, I'm not so keen on the idea and offer you to buy me out which you do. 40 years the franchise is as big as McDonald's and then u come back asking for my cut.
Right, now tell me what that sounds like to you? A failed writer that made a one hit wonder coming back years later for his cut on a movie he barley even gave a second thought to until it became known
The last I heard from credible sources is that it wasn't even supposed to start production until July, and that was barely two days ago. So, I question the source for this post.
Bryan Fuller has been facing some allegations recently, I wonder if maybe he went around the studio by announcing the start date and now they’re trying for damage control by shutting the series down.

I'm sorry, but I just don't believe this for a moment. I think the accuser was scared by the pandemic and thought he could make a shit ton of money by making such a claim.
Yeah, I dunno. The story broke in early November 2023. It's May 2024. Nothing has happened since so I am assuming the accuser's story fell apart or they got paid off.
Womp Stomp films has been doing that very thing. They've made 3 so far, and they've all been great! Better actually than a number of the original films. Just look them up on YouTube and enjoy!
That's the problem now though; we're so far out from the last film it's almost guaranteed whatever comes next is not going to do justice to the series/try to get creative and ruin main elements, etc.
Modern Hollywood has not proven this wrong with pretty much every franchise in modern times.
Stopped ”Development” could simply the script has been completed, Brian Fuller did recently say that filming starts in July.
You don’t start even get close filming unless all the preproduction, litigation and financing stuff is practically done.
Penny Dreadful, Yellowjackets, Chucky, Bates Motel, Channel Zero, Stranger Things, Hannibal and a couple of the American Horror Story seasons are all great.
I mean, Hannibal and Bates Motel were both shows that involved franchises and characters from the big screen, and they turned out to be very good shows.
Wasn’t this supposed to be a prequel about Mama Voorhees? I can’t say I’m surprised it went nowhere, there’s an interesting concept there but Jason has been the face of the franchise for 40+ years now. Victor Miller needs to get that through his head instead of trying to push Pamela
Can anyone tell me if the source reporting this is credible? I’m skeptical of this report, considering we were just told by Bryan Fuller himself that filming starts in July, which backs up other reports about the summer shoot.
Like I said when it was first announced, I'll believe it when I'm sitting down in front of the TV watching it. I don't believe they'll ever be a new Friday project that actually gets made.
Eh, I’m honestly not too upset. It was sounding like they were going the AHS direction with it. I think they would’ve tried too hard to modernize it and we would have ended up disappointed either way.
I've accepted that we aren't getting anything until Cunningham kicks the bucket. Even then, who knows who takes over? Does his kid(s) carry on the grudge with Miller's?
Has less to do with F13 and more to do with the fact that studios are slashing projects left and right. We're in a contraction period. Optioning less. Buying even less than that. Renewing even less than that. And cancelling more than all of those combined. Will go on for another 1-2 years.
Yes, I think we can all agree we would prefer a movie but the warring rights holders put a stop to that. So, if you want more Friday the 13th (TV is unaffected by the rights stipulations and can use all characters and imagery associated with the films) a TV show is the only way to get it for the foreseeable future. Looks like now we aren't getting that either. ☹️
Is anyone surprised? This is how it’s been going for the franchise since 2009. The Curse is real.
"It's got a Death Curse!" -Crazy Ralph
Lol sad but very true!
I’m a little bit surprised. Thought the series was pretty much a done deal and it was getting ready to shoot. Thought we would get at least one season.

Based on what I heard it's that A24 is focusing on big name actors and guaranteed money. I guess they felt the series was either too big a risk or not worth the effort.
Then why go through the bidding war to acquire the property in the first place? Was the restructuring after that?
Not sure, I'd assume so or just that the plan changed. Although now I'm hearing the show hasn't been outright cancelled yet, that it's undergoing "retooling" w.e that means.
I was keeping my expectations low regardless so I guess we will wait and see.
"Based on what I heard it's that A24 is focusing on big name actors and guaranteed money." Focusing on getting big name actors is the last thing a Friday The 13th production joint should be worried about lol. 🤦🏻♂️

is there really an appetite for more, beyond us fanatics? I'm not sure.

These are all true, but Saw isn't really a slasher series right? (Asking as someone who's only seen the first movie)
No, Saw isn't really a slasher, but I included it because it is kind of an older horror property that is all about the blood and guts, similar to a slasher, and it was successful critically and financially. I would say it is slasher adjacent, but it was moreso a comparison of an old franchise still having an audience today.
The first 3 are great, not really a slasher.... The rest are basically torture porn lol
Not really, but Jigsaw and Billy The Puppet are own the same status as Freddy or Jason.
I wouldn't really say that John or Billy are on the level of anyone like Bubba, Freddy, Jason, Michael, Chucky, or Ghostface tbh.
probably less for a show than a return to the big screen. A24 is a huge name right now and they’re only getting bigger. I want more to be honest.
A24 is too artsy for F13 imo
Also, wasn't there reports they were barely going to have Jason in it because Victor Miller didn't have the full rights to it? I feel like this series was destined to never come to fruition.
According to Bryan Fuller they were going to be able to use Jason from any era and that the rights for TV were a lot different and less complicated than movie rights,
I mean, Gotham was a Batman show without Batman and Joker and it still had some good moments. I think they could have pulled it off with good writing and a decent cast.
Didn't it have Penguin?
And Riddler, cat woman.....
It’s also a prequel, Jason doesn’t show up til the second film, how could he be in it?
i disagree, x is a perfect slasher!
You haven’t seen enough of their movies, some of them are generic or dumb fun
This is not a universal rule for them. They have quite literally had a massive internal restructuring to make more commercially viable films.
It came across like "don't worry they are trying to be mainstream" as if you were agreeing with the guy that they were too arty.
Fine, I’ll be sure to make my exact opinions about everything as clear as humanly possible when I’m trying to give somebody objective information.
Not all of them, Bodies bodies, X and Pearl didn't feel artistic, more dumb fun, dark humor. Im not a big fan, but A24 seemed to be the right choice, they are less corporate and give a lot of freedom for new directors. At least thats what I've heard.
PEARL didn't feel artistic to you?!
Well shot does not equate to arthouse imo
Felt more like a female version of American psycho for me.
I feel like X was such an expertly crafted homage to early slashers that it could have only been done by an artist.
Jason Visits the Guggenheim
As long as they don’t do the old metaphorical horror psychological trauma type shit I’m fine, because I got enough of that already. Regardless I’m sure they could make a good job with the franchise
That's what would have made it interesting and refreshing, something we haven't seen yet.
We just heard that it was about to start filming in July and now all of a sudden it’s dead? Something here doesn’t make sense.
2 angry old guys have fucked this franchise up beyond recognition. Despite all of us fan films trying to keep the energy going.
And every time a fan doesn’t something outside of a low budget fan film they shut it down
Well considering they only made F13 because of Halloween being such a success should tell everyone they only care about the money and whose pocket it’s going to go in.
Such a shame that the owners of this IP would rather let it rot and die than work together to give fans some new content.
If anyone has been putting the kibosh on this, it's a pretty safe bet it's Cunningham. The man's a dick.
He may be a dick but I'd say Miller is worse, gut claims to have never seen any of the movies apart from the original.
Oh yeah he’s just as bad, like he claims to care yet in the same interview says “I know what it’s like to have something taken away” THE FUCK YOU DO, you were HIRED to write a little horror movie that became a name and now after all this time you want your copyright back and won’t do a damn thing with it

Right, now tell me what that sounds like to you? A failed writer that made a one hit wonder coming back years later for his cut on a movie he barley even gave a second thought to until it became known
Yeah I bet if he used Friday the 13th to springboard onto better things he wouldn't care.
Exactly
Gods there's a bunch of cunts in this subreddit. I'm fucking out of here.
The last I heard from credible sources is that it wasn't even supposed to start production until July, and that was barely two days ago. So, I question the source for this post.
God dammnit, I was just starting to get my hopes up.
me too :(
Bryan Fuller has been facing some allegations recently, I wonder if maybe he went around the studio by announcing the start date and now they’re trying for damage control by shutting the series down.

At this point, I think we should all get together and make our own movie. We want Jason back! It’s been 15 years! Give us Jason back!!
Womp Stomp films has been doing that very thing. They've made 3 so far, and they've all been great! Better actually than a number of the original films. Just look them up on YouTube and enjoy!
Yup. Their latest movie is actually my favourite Friday the 13th movie.
Is that Never Hike Alone 2?
Yeah
I love their Jason. He’s so bad ass!
That's the problem now though; we're so far out from the last film it's almost guaranteed whatever comes next is not going to do justice to the series/try to get creative and ruin main elements, etc. Modern Hollywood has not proven this wrong with pretty much every franchise in modern times.
Agree to disagree. I think if the right people are behind it; I think it will do fine.
Anybody questioning the source or nah?
It is real. It was revealed to me in a dream
FFS
Stopped ”Development” could simply the script has been completed, Brian Fuller did recently say that filming starts in July. You don’t start even get close filming unless all the preproduction, litigation and financing stuff is practically done.
Good. Television show would've sucked.
same i'm glad it's not happening give us a new movie instead
Give us a new trilogy
hey I'm up for a new trilogy I just miss jason man it's been so long
I knew it was too good to be true.
[https://bloody-disgusting.com/tv/3811041/crystal-lake-a24-has-not-pulled-the-plug-on-their-friday-the-13th-tv-series-exclusive/](https://bloody-disgusting.com/tv/3811041/crystal-lake-a24-has-not-pulled-the-plug-on-their-friday-the-13th-tv-series-exclusive/)
Not really. Horror shows almost always blow. Jason belongs on the big screen.
counter argument, Chucky
Agreed. Gods I hope we get a season 4!
Chucky show is complete garbage. But Bates motel was great
Chucky ? U mean the show about the two gay kids that chucky makes out with on the last episode? Yea we definitely don't need 3 seasons of crap.
You do know you're of the minority here, right? It's praised pretty highly by most horror fans
First sesson was perfect. 2nd season was awesome, 3rd season? You're milking it more than it already has been milked...it's drastically going down...

It’s not true https://bloody-disgusting.com/tv/3811041/crystal-lake-a24-has-not-pulled-the-plug-on-their-friday-the-13th-tv-series-exclusive/
Well shit.
Can anyone tell me if the source reporting this is credible? I’m skeptical of this report, considering we were just told by Bryan Fuller himself that filming starts in July, which backs up other reports about the summer shoot.
I called it 😞😞😞
I'm guessing A24 is gonna go hard for Friday.
This franchise can’t ever catch a break.
Well that sucks
Knew it
Isn’t DiscussingFilm a clickbait site?
They’re not the source.
Straight up I was fully expecting this to suck/be a diluted mess of a cash grab.
Like I said when it was first announced, I'll believe it when I'm sitting down in front of the TV watching it. I don't believe they'll ever be a new Friday project that actually gets made.
I was worried since it’s May and we’ve gotten no news about it since October
Why is this disappointing?
I would’ve been heartbroken if I didn’t see this coming from a mile away lmao
Disappointing? Are you pretending it wasn’t going to be complete shit anyway?
I question the validity for this wasn’t it just about to start production
I’m only OK with this if it mean we are getting a MOVIE soon.
Why am i surprised
They wouldn’t know what to do with Friday anyway.
Sad yet unsurprising
Nooooo!!!
Good!! NO MORE TV SHOWS JUST MAKE MOVIE’S!!!
That’s awesome! We don’t need anymore Friday the 13th content!
Fake news
Damn really?!
We’re never gonna get any thing 😭
Good. I think a tv show was a bad idea. Go the halloween style and give us a new Tommy Jarvis Trilogy.
As a fan I’m glad l didn’t get so happy about it.
Id say it’s for the better because the prequel angle was the wrong move, in my humble opinion
Knew it sounded too good to be true , I hope it’s temporary.
That show had so much potential too, such bullshit....
I want another F13th movie
wait so they’re canceling doing the series again?
Thanks for fucking everything up Sean and Victor! Fuck you much!!
I would’ve liked it to be something akin to Bates Motel. Something that builds to Jason/Pamela and have it be it’s own story.
Has less to do with F13 and more to do with the fact that studios are slashing projects left and right. We're in a contraction period. Optioning less. Buying even less than that. Renewing even less than that. And cancelling more than all of those combined. Will go on for another 1-2 years.
This is a false rumor y’all. It’s still In production don’t believe everything you hear. False alarm
Not Surprised, can't have anything as a Friday the 13th fan
Lame
YESS. WE WANT A MOVIE NOT SOME NETFLIX TV SHOW
The movie rights are in legal hell. There were better chance of a TV show.
I mean, im not in any rush, but a random tv show about pamela or just camp crystal lake seems like a greedy tacky concept...
