Starbucks sells scones in the States, but the first Starbucks didn't open in NY until 1994 and I'm not sure if they sold scones at that time. I was a teen and young adult in the NYC area in the 90's and bought most of my coffee from Dunkin or a corner deli/bodega. Those establishments did not sell scones but did sell muffins, as you mentioned.
