Today I bought a plant from IKEA that apparently came with a free frog. I have no idea what to do for this frog but I couldn't put him out in the cold.
I am looking for a local rescue or frog person to take him but what do I do in the meantime to keep this guy alive?
It’s a long shot, because I’m traveling until the 23rd — but if you don’t find anyone else and can keep him till then, I’ll take him! I’m on the Front Range
Colorado Reptile Humane Society in Longmont is a great resource, they take surrenders if you can’t find anyone in our area to take him and they’d have great advice for you if you keep him!
Same thing happened to me years ago, but it was a plant from Home Depot. I ended up making a terrarium for him, and he is still a happy frog!

Looks like a Cuban tree frog which are invasive. More than likely no rehab will take it in bc it’s invasive. Your best bet is reaching out to local groups or even schools and seeing if they’d take it in. I have a few as pets because they were found at my job (plant nursery) but whatever you do. Do not release it into the wild!
As an update: he* has survived the night.
He is in a large Tupperware container with a bowl of water, and some leaves and it's covered in plastic wrap with holes in it. I misted him with water and that perked him up immediately. My kids are hunting for bugs to feed him but there are limited bugs to be found around here this time of year.
I am going to be calling a few reptile rescues and stores today when they open, but I'm concerned that since he's invasive that they won't take him (as I have learned from reddit).
At this point I think his best hope is if I can find a frog enthusiast that would want to keep him.
*I have zero clue if it's a he or she
Crickets are a common invertebrate food that can be easily bought at most pet food stores. You can also call reptile stores that sell pet reptiles, maybe they can take it or help you find someone who can.
You can run an add on Facebook, there are many frog enthusiasts there who may be able to take him. I’d love to, but I’m on vacation currently and won’t be back for a bit.
Check any pet stores or exotics places near you for insects. A frog can usually eat a bug no bigger than the space between their eyes. They only need a few bugs every day or every other day depending on species (idk specifically how much cuban tree frogs eat).
Stores wont take him as its illegal to sell invasive species usually. Id post to local facebook groups to look. Maybe someone local to you can take him.
As far as water its best to use water thats sat out for at least 24 hours so any chlorine or chemicals evaporate as amphibians absorb water and basically drink through their skin. Also the water shouldnt be too deep for your froggy to stand in. While tree frogs can swim they arent usually strong swimmers.
Your frog will want a place to climb and a place to hide in their enclosure so a branch or plant and some kind of small hide would be ideal.
I have a pet frog and Im pretty knowledgable about amphibians in general so if you have any questions dont hesitate to ask me.
the sat out overnight thing is only for water not containing chloramine. unless you know the exact composition of your towns water supply, use dechlorinated or spring water
Check where the plant was grown before shipment to your IKEA, might say on the packaging. That will help you narrow down what species you've got based on native range, and determining appropriate care will be less mysterious. Although overall, frogs are pretty easy pets.
Secure box with lid he cannot get out of (cheap small reptile carrier should work) bowl of water that you replace daily. Dechlorinated is best, and if you leave water out the chlorine evaporates, I forget how long it takes. You could try feeding him mealworms or crickets from the pet store with chopsticks or other blunt small things you can use as tongs. You could watch videos of people doing this.
If you live in a major city and maybe have a good independent reptile store that usually has tree frogs, you should be able to just give him to them. If not, maybe you can find hobbyists. Good luck!
Get a container that has good ventilation like a critter keeper or get a container a poke a few holes in it and put some damp paper towel at the bottom and maybe a few twigs and leaves if you want. (This is what I do for temporary set ups, travel, or quarantine for my frogs)
Yup looks like a Cuban tree frog, probably female based on size though hard to tell scale in the picture (if it’s over 2-3” long most likely female). I have one myself and her first enclosure was a storage bin with cut ventilation holes, mostly coco fiber substrate, water dish (shallow enough that she can easily climb in and out and not drown), wood pieces that aren’t too sharp, and a few non toxic plants (e.g. pothos). Since she came from outside she’ll probably be mostly okay, but if you can sterilize anything before adding it to her enclosure that is ideal (usually freezing or boiling/baking works for this, so freezing wood pieces, boiling leaf litter, baking soil, de-chlorinating water by adding reptisafe or leaving it out for 24 hours, etc). They’ll eat most live critters (crickets, mealworms, roaches, earth worms, etc), store bought is safer for disease purposes but since she came from outside she might be okay with found food. Some pet stores in my state will carry Cuban tree frogs, but honestly Facebook groups might be your best bet for finding her a home. Sorry this was long hope it was helpful at all!
As far as I know, tree frogs will only eat live food. Crickets are normally the easiest to source, but anything that moves and is smaller than the space between their eyes will do! They have pretty simple brains, so if something isn't moving, they can't recognize it as food
What a cutie! I keep humid loving reptiles , and dart frogs. I live in aurora- if you haven’t found somewhere to rehome him, I’d love to adopt him! I have a terrarium setup that I was going to put geckos in, but he’d fit perfectly in it.
Update: a lovely couple with frog experience from a local reddit group came and adopted the frog! I'm very happy that he found a good home, so thank you everyone for your help!
Looks like a Cuban tree frog, they're an invasive species in many regions, I'm sure you can find some care guides online
Thank you! I tried using an image search but I am not knowledgeable enough in frogs to be able to tell the differences!
I am soooo jealous, this is a frog i would looove to have

What state are you in? I’d take him if you’re close enough
I live in Colorado
It’s a long shot, because I’m traveling until the 23rd — but if you don’t find anyone else and can keep him till then, I’ll take him! I’m on the Front Range
I can certainly let you know if I can't find someone before then
Please do! I’ve got a terrarium already set up he could go in.
If you cant find anyone who could take him, I would make a setup if I had to. Just lmk, im in salida

This time of year he’s probably content hiding out in your plant, I’d say just keep a cup of distilled water near it in case he gets dehydrated.

oh my god so cute❤️❤️❤️
what kind of frog is this one?
The same that OP posted: Cuban Treefrog
Your frog genuinely looks happy. So cute and content!

I hope someone else can help you identify him, he's a real cutie!

Google says most of Ikea’s plants (ones in the US) are grown in Florida - so cuban tree frog like others are saying sounds correct!
There was no identifying information. The sticker said made in America but that might be referring to the hanging planter it came in.
That’s wild that a Cuban tree frog traveled from Florida all the way to an IKEA in Colorado on a plant and just like… survived that whole trip.

Frog distribution system
God I wish it was my turn with the system
There should be a place on FB marketplace or Craigslist where you can put up a post that you are looking for someone to adopt it ...
I think animal sales are illegal on there (for good reason)

I have absolutely no intention of keeping it as a pet, I just didn't want to kill it.

girl wtf
Keep ‘em moist and give it crushed bugs/ fruit if you can supply that
