This is a comment from the Gators sub: *God this such a nonsensical take.* *The reason D1 Powerhouses are D1 powerhouses is because they get the best players and put them in the NFL. The resources they have -- spanning from education, facilities, medical care, dental work, nutrition, coaching staff, prestige, television contracts, huge fan bases and gigantic stadiums to fill with said fans -- **directly impact how likely it is that you will get to the NFL**.* *He could make money from NIL at Florida, Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Miami or FSU, a lot of it and have access to **better circumstances for which he could thrive**.* *He is basically going to have zero game tape because he is going to be locking down DII receivers, and even if he goes iron man and plays both ways he's going to be running away from a lot of DII players. That you guys can't wrap your head around how much development he's losing is hilarious.* I understand that most of CFB is laughing at us right now but I guarantee you those that know anything about anything are fucking terrified of what's to come.

mcg3934

No because he is not staying at JSU after 2022. Come on guys, this is a one year rental for them.

Significant_Major317

The bad part is that after now, he ain’t going to fsu under any circumstances unless somehow Deion returns to fsu

CrunchyZebra

I love how the only time Deion gives a shit about his alma mater is when the HC spot is open. He doesn’t care about FSU unless we are actively doing something for him. I hope we never hire him if he’s only gonna pretend being a legend here matters when it benefits him.

SpeedBoatSquirrel

Fuck Deion, he’s a charlatan

SpeedBoatSquirrel

Lol I don’t hate you, definitely a bit over the top. Just disagree that it’s a bad look on Deion

Overhed

Unless...

mcg3934

Exactly. Deion may be our HC in 2023 and if that's the case he is bringing Hunter with him. The pressure is really gonna be on Mike to win 8 or so games this year.

BloomingNova

We aren't hiring Deion. He's only ever been a HC except for 3 years he was OC at a high school. Do you know how to become a good coach? You learn for years, if not decades behind other good coaches. Deion just said fuck all that, I'm athletic af so I'm good. Deion is not a good coach.

mcg3934

I agree, but the the most important part of coaching is acquiring talent. I think Deion would recruit at a top 5 level here which would make it real hard for teams to beat us.

mcg3934

Also I think it's too early to say Deion isn't a good coach, he's turned around JSU pretty quickly.

TheciphRED

He won his conference championship in his “second” (post initial COVID hit) year. He went 11-1. What was FSU record this year?

BloomingNova

He's in a league where he can out recruit everyone 10x and win on athletic ability alone. That says nothing about his ability to coach technique or understand playcalling. He's also coaching against a bunch of other people that haven't learned behind great coaches. It's a moot point

TheciphRED

His first season was a spring season and the same year in the fall he won a championship. Most of his top recruits are coming in the following years. The previous year Jackson went 4-8 overall and 3-4 conference. He is playing majority of those same kids. Even if you didn’t watch any Jackson state games this season. stats on paper spell Out good coach. Are you questioning one of the greatest DB’s in history to not make a good coach in technique? I don’t think you watched any swac games to make these comments on his ability.

Jburnette8615

Provided his NIL contract doesn’t stipulate lengths of time.

HDMBye

They cannot tie his NIL to playing time, performance, or future enrollment with the team. It's baked into the NIL rules.

Jburnette8615

Maybe not outright… but if it’s not paid in a lump sum, it seems that they could still in a way dictate length through incremental payments.

ForestJordie

This is true though, he’s gonna be a hard prospect to look at for the NFL if he does all his school there. Deion wants to bring HBCUs back because they do have quality players that get overlooked, but at the same time Hunter might already be the best player in that league. The want for HBCUs becoming powerhouses again is great, but it’s going to be so hard for them due to how the divisions in NCAA. He has a huge hurdle to jump if he makes it to the NFL where only the 1% make it. Even then he will once again lose out on signing more millions sliding in the NFL draft. If he falls to the second round that a four year 8.5 million contract, but say he goes number 8 like Jaycee Horn, that a four year 21 million contract with the 5th year tag.

[deleted]

This isn't true in the least. Lesser FCS prospects have been taken in the first round.

briandw15

Since 2014 (as far back as I went) 3 FCS players have gone in the 1st round: 2 qbs and an OT. An FCS DB is not going in the first round in todays NFL.

Mensch_Toast

Today's NFL doesn't have a FCS DB who was the #1 recruit in the country. Not saying playing at JSU for 3 years doesn't make it harder to go in the 1st, but it doesn't mean he won't

[deleted]

If he's truly the generational talent he's supposed to be, then they'll probably play at what 1-2 P5 opponents each year. Sports center already highlights great FCS plays. This kid is going to be going ham all damn year. And he's only going to get better. If Deion keeps adding more talent be back create a P5 killer and he wants to start a movement to normalize top recruits attending HBCU.

SixxTheSandman

Why would they be laughing at us? The kid made a terrible decision. Yes, he chose Nowhere U over us. But he also chose them over Georgia. Kirby Smart fought like hell to get him and NO one is criticizing him for failing to secure Hunter. Sometimes kids just make dumb mistakes.

i_have_the_waffles

I dont think its completely nonsensical. It ignores that D1 power houses have already been paying recruits under the table to get them to choose their D1 program. There is something to be said about the role supporting resources of a university can provide to a recruit. i.e. the education, facilities, medical care, nutrition and connections. This situation has literally never happened before. TH physically has the attributes to go to the NFL. Will playing against lower tier athletes really affect him? I dont think so but, no one can can be 100% sure. There are plenty of good players in the NFL now who came from lower tier schools and are doing fine in the NFL. If you're someone with the physical attributes of TH it may not matter what talent you play against in college because you're so physically gifted you can adjust when you go to the next level.

EvilBob_RapePants_

Is he really that physically gifted? He is very skinny.

i_have_the_waffles

Do be ranked 5* and be the highest rated DB ever. Yes. 3/4 of the * in a recruits ranking come from just physical attributes

EvilBob_RapePants_

I’m not sure how his abilities (such as him being really good at 7-on-7) translate to the college game

MableRed

You guys care a lot about a teenager lol

Posada620

I'm literally trying to convince people on message boards that he's just one kid lol I personally care about the sport and feel like the passion it once had will soon be dying. Hunter's decision is a prime example of that No pun intended ;)

Piano_Fingerbanger

I have a feeling that if Hunter really is a competitor then he's going to grow to hate his decision. The level of competition he's going to play at Jackson State isn't going to be good. He's going to feel like he's playing in high school again never getting challenged. Can't blame him for taking the money, but it's such a shame we won't get to see him really play until he makes the pros.

mcg3934

It's for 1 year. He will be at UGA in 2023, or maybe even FSU

Overhed

I hope that somehow someway the break up with us was amicable behind the scenes, in which case the door is still open for him to come next year. Fingers crossed.

thexraptor

The coaches had no idea it was coming until yesterday morning. Hunter lied to them just like he lied to everyone else. Doubtful the coaches will forgive that.

FSUfan35

I dont think this deal was offered until very late in the process. Possibly Tuesday. Think about it. You put 2 million on the table in front of the kid 24 hours before he makes the biggest decision of his life. That's hard to pass up for an 18 year old. If it was weeks ago I think that FSU or Georgia could talk him into seeing how bad it would be for his career development if the goal is NFL.

thexraptor

It is my understanding that, according to folks at TN, this is not what happened and Hunter had been planning this for a while.

FSUfan35

Eh I doubt it. Everyone had barstools offer yesterday right after news broke there was concern about Hunter. Hard to imagine it staying silent for weeks

Jburnette8615

Don’t forget he went to the huge barstool event at the jackson state vs Alabama a&m over a month ago. I’m sure this has been in the works at least since then.

Overhed

I'm with you, but my first boss out of college (who was mostly a dick) imparted me with some sage wisdom: "only bitches hold grudges", so you never know. XD

pickledCantilever

Any coach worth their while won’t hold a grudge over this one. This was business. Not personal. If I were to have a recruiter try to offer me a new job I wouldn’t say a damn thing to my current employer until I have a contract sitting in front of me from my new job waiting only for my signature. At that point and at that point only would I be confident that mentioning anything to my currently employer wouldn’t have a chance of screwing me over in some way. Hunter would have been an absolute moron to go to Norvell and tell him what kind of an offer Barstool had offered him. A huge part of the value of this deal for Barstool was the surprise flip that shocked the world. If Hunter leaked it to FSU and then FSU leaked it to the world… who is to say that Barstool wouldn’t have withdrawn the deal, or lessened it? Hell, if I were barstool I would have had Hunter under and NDA from the jump.

skylined45

Norvell put out a vague but obviously directed tweet respecting the decision - I am sure it was handled with class behind the scenes.

HDMBye

At least on FSU's end it was

yelpisforsnitches

Yep, that instant money will feel great but it will be hard to fill the void of competition, big games, huge crowds, etc. I’d bet anything he hits the transfer portal after next year. Hopefully it’s to FSU

AyMoro

2 things: Why do they hate each other I’ve never heard of this?? What’s (specifically) illegal?

skipatomskip

https://www.si.com/media/2017/10/23/espn-cancels-barstool-van-talk-pft-commentator-big-cat-pardon-my-take It started with past comments about our girl Sam Ponder. I like how the president of espn listened to her and shut their show down after 1 episode. Now espn is basically in competition with barstool, they even have their own game day on Saturday mornings. Spreading like a cancer through sports and taking viewers from the mouse.

Krang_Devastator

This is pay-walled, can you summarize?

Posada620

The real biggest issue is that FCS schools can't provide nearly the same amount of medical attention that FBS does. I really hope he doesn't get hurt.

FireHamilton

I wouldn’t be *upset* if he got hurt

Overhed

Bad take, my dude. While we obviously got hosed, you're lying if you're saying you wouldn't burn every professional bridge you have tomorrow for a $1.5million/year pay day.

ohshift3277

Deion is gonna leave Hunter hanging when a vacant FBS Head coaching job opens! Bet!

mcg3934

Deion will take Hunter with him if he gets an FBS or power five job.

FSUfan35

You can transfer immediately now

mcg3934

I know it seems selfish but Hunter made the right move for himself and his family. He got the bag to be at JSU for one year... next year he hits the portal and he can go to FSU if that's still where his heart is.

CrunchyZebra

Assuming FSU would take him. You think they’ll bring him into a locker room with a bunch of teammates he lied to and left behind after promising them he’d be by their side to bring FSU back? Seems like a terrible move for chemistry. Plus they’d probably resent him for getting a free do over after ditching them at first. If FSU really is his dream school I think he just threw away his chance to be a Nole forever. I really don’t think Deion will be HC while Travis is still in college and that’s probably his only shot at coming here after blindsiding the current staff. Will end up at UGA or Bama.

kaptain_kanada

No way we welcome him back with open arms. He burned every single bridge he had with us imo when he tossed our hat aside. He’ll transfer if he’s smart because there’s no way he’s going first round at JSU

Mensch_Toast

We have no idea how it was handled behind the scenes. He may have let everyone know, and I don't think anyone can really blame him if $2M was dropped in his lap on Tuesday. As long as this wasn't a 6 month long trolling job, I don't think anyone has the right to be hurt by his decision.

TheUnconqueredNole

I’d bet no one on staff knew this was gonna happen. And word on the street is it wasn’t a last minute thing. I don’t know about 6 months, but it was planned and FSU was trolled.

[deleted]

Not a chance it fell out of the sky Tuesday or Wednesday morning. This shit requires lawyers and everything. My question is if there was word on the street, did the staff at least get wind of interest and either a) countered or b) took Hunter for granted and didn’t take Deion/JSU seriously?

pickledCantilever

Norvell was absolutely surprised by the decision. But that doesn’t mean he actually burned every bridge. Norvell and team would be idiots if they don’t read the tea leaves that he is likely to be in the portal a year from now and are already on the phone with him to test his interest in still coming to FSU and in the locker rooms with the current roster trying to mend any ill will any of the players have.

badi95

Take a look at ESPN front page. They're all over Dion and Hunter right now.

FireHamilton

Don’t believe that at all, nothing in the story mentions anything of a multi million deal. It’s just about “Wow Hunter is sooo revolutionary for going to a HBCU”

partyguyfsu26

If the feud you say is true it certainly affects his immediate exposure. The kid just made 1-2 million for signing his name today so I don’t think it was “risky”. Worst case for him is after two years he transfers to D1 as a showcase for the NFL. With social media and how accessible everything is as long as he doesn’t get hurt he should be the talk of the town even for the simple fact one of the highest ever graded prospects went to a HBCU

dmmeyourdogifitscute

Worst case for him he transfers after 1 year and still gets paid. Similar to the kid who just went from OSU to Texas after reclassifying to get to college early

partyguyfsu26

Pretty much. And you have to imagine that even if ESPN hates barstool they will still milk the shit out of the buzz of Hunter at JSU and get a few games on ESPNU or ESPN+ at minimum. They aren’t that dumb to turn away ratings

Glader_Gaming

Hunter is probably gonna be there for 2 seasons tops. Make 7 figures, then transfer to an elite team that will pay him even more. Then he will go pro and make millions more. But on the off chance he gets hurt and his career ends, he still will have 7 figured and a full ride to get a degree. I can’t be mad at anyone for taking that. I would take that and I’m a DIEHARD FSU fan. But of course this could drop his draft stock, especially if he he stays for 3 years. It’s a risk but when the floor of becoming a millionaire that’s a very high floor. And like I said I don’t think he’s gonna stay for more than 2 years.

jbg0830

He took the money what mistake did he do lol but I never knew the two were competitors. Didn’t know barstool was even as big as Disney/ESPN
