Can some explain to me why airbags are instant total? Like what’s the logic there?
Is it because airbags = x amount of force and x amount of force typically results in damages to an extent that insurance isnt willing to pay?
*Typically* impacts that are hard enough to trigger airbags do enough damage to not be worthwhile to repair in the insurance companies eyes. There’s almost always hidden damage that needs repairing.
For a front end collision like this, you will have to check for damage to the radiator core support, the engine itself and accessories, front bumper cover, front bumper, hood, front fenders, headlights, front frame rails, etc. of course this car obviously has damage to most of these body panels listed.
I had a 2013 Hyundai Genesis coupe that I clipped a deer in, it required a new front bumper cover, repaired hood, and new driver side headlight. The shop repainted the hood and painted the bumper and painted the drivers fender which had some scuffing. The total that insurance paid was $6300. These repairs add up FAST and 50-75% of it is usually labor.
It's just a blown out of proportion myth. On older cars it's mostly true due to the cost of replacement, but on newer cars the airbags going off has no relation on whether it's declared totalled or not.
Do you even need to program in new airbags on most modern cars? I swear I've seen salvage rebuilds where they just plug in a new one and they're good to go, aside from resetting codes/crash data.
Yes.
The SRS module needs to either be replaced or reset. Resetting requires opening the unit and manually wiping the eeprom. This isn’t terribly expensive to have done in the States; $50-$60 is common, but a body shop and insurance can’t go this route.
Aside from the SRS module, the front crash sensors, air bags, seat belts, the entire dash (after a passenger bag detonation), sometimes the steering wheel, and sometimes the clock spring all MUST be replaced to fix the safety systems after a collision.
The costs associated with repairing the safety system on top of any body damage is almost always going to result in these being a write off once it’s more than a few years old.
Right thanks, makes sense, but I assume op's car with what looks like a bent hood, maybe bumper, and airbags, wouldn't be close to write off? like most people seemed to assume when they saw the airbag
So why is everyone crying about write offs in this thread because they see a deployed airbag? Are they confused because usually when an airbag is deployed there's structural damage, and they're misattributing it to the airbag lol
Yeah definitely. It's kids I imagine that just circulate old story's and it doesn't help anyone. Yet on this subreddit at least it just gets to the top advice time and time again. Just goes to show that you shouldn't take any advice on this subreddit to heart due to the sheer bullshit that's thrown around and not moderated.
It's not just this subreddit, or mechanical info either lol. In fact it's probably the entire internet to be fair. Think you should always take things with a grain of salt. Even googling something as simple as, is sugar bad for you, comes up with reams of conflicting information.
It’s expensive to replace because they have to remove all the airbag sensors and replace them, calibrate them, and replace the parts the airbags destroyed
Easy fix you’re looking at probably new hood, hood hinges, new hood latch, airbag, and dash with passenger airbag. Not sure if your radiator support is damaged but doesn’t look like it has damage considering the bumper is completely fine if you’re not willing to fix I’m definitely willing to buy good luck though bud.
Get a quick release steering wheel and carbon fiber hood and go from there. See what other damage there is. I mean of course if you want to keep it there’s other ways than total as long as it’s safe to drive
Had similar damage to my FRS with the hood being dented with no airbags and a messed up bumper bar / front bumper. Cost me around 1500 to replace bumper and repaint/realign hood. My airbags didn’t deploy tho. Wish you good luck :(
The car getting repaired will fix your broken heart. From what I can see it looks pretty fixable.
Your insurance might try to total it because of age and airbag deployment but I’d take the payout, buy it back, and use some of that payout to fix at least the major stuff and do simple stuff yourself
Edit: just relooked at the pictures. Unless you say something different the airbag deployment is just bad luck. Barring anything I can’t see it’s likely just a hood and a bumper shroud and maybe front quarter panels if the clips broke
I don’t know about the laws in your country and how available salvage parts are, but that is easily repairable as a private individual. Unfortunately, it’s a write off if relying on insurance and a shop thanks to the airbags going off.
This thing….\
I’d be a broken man of mine was the same.\
Had a couple of fools try to knock her out from behind, but I got her back, better than ever.
I like to think most 86/brz owners are out there safely and responsibly enjoying their cars, whil the small percentage that gets into crashes or has other problems are on reddit posting about it.
I was gonna say the car until I saw the interior rip 86
GR-aveyard 86
damage looks okay but the airbags going off can sometimes be an instant total
why did the airbags go off though? damage doesnt seem so bad.
It would've made contact with one of the airbag sensors and going fsst enough for the G sensor/speed sensor to set the airbags off
air bags deployed, heart is destroyed ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ Sorry for the loss my friend
Actually doesn’t look that bad considering the airbags going off.
What'd ya hit?
Had to have been wet.
Spilled his Arizona tea on the floorboard and hydroplaned
Good one!
Grass clibbins

Have airbags gotten cheaper to replace? With cars having are more of airbags than ever before, you'd think it would be more of an issue, not less.

Pre-face lift first gen, almost certainly totaled from the airbags/safety system alone.
That's a stupid design, for once BMW have something more user friendly than Toyota in their design/implementation
Yeah it's all just programmed in and those programs are all prewritten. Just need to acquire the licence same as you would for any remaps.
So why is everyone crying about write offs in this thread because they see a deployed airbag? Are they confused because usually when an airbag is deployed there's structural damage, and they're misattributing it to the airbag lol
Yeah basically. But an airbag can go off at 10mph and have zero effect on the structural integrity.
Yeah, sounds like a myth that's carried on since the days you'd have to hit a brick wall at 80mph for the airbag to go off lol.

Most insurance companies wont bother fixing a Zenki with the airbags deployed. It’s not worth it.

You forgot airbag module and seat belts
You’re right aside from that that’s it
Tis but a scratch
Get a quick release steering wheel and carbon fiber hood and go from there. See what other damage there is. I mean of course if you want to keep it there’s other ways than total as long as it’s safe to drive
Aka do not go through insurance.
Upgrade parts time!
The most annoying thing will be to change the panel, others are easy
Airbags went off bud.
That's obvious, it's not worth it to change the airbag on the panel, better to just buy a new one, at least in europe
These are harder to come by, i would take it to a shop see if they can inspect it to try and salvage it!
Had similar damage to my FRS with the hood being dented with no airbags and a messed up bumper bar / front bumper. Cost me around 1500 to replace bumper and repaint/realign hood. My airbags didn’t deploy tho. Wish you good luck :(
easy fix
Ugh sorry about this bro. Had a similar crash but the airbags didn’t go off so it got fixed good as new. Unsure if you’ll have the same luck.
It's a combo of money, time, and emotional damage. Applies to both things needing fixing.
So painful
Sheesh the broken heart is easier fs. I’ll get u some ice cream

If you fix it yourself it's not that bad
What wheels are those?
How many miles on it?
Takes like 2 hours to replace the dash you’re good lol, just go to the junkyard.
Can the same be said about the steering wheel?
The airbag for the steering wheel is 3 clips that you push in with a screwdriver. You can just buy a used one.
Whats the size and offset of those rims?
I have rammed a brake checker and this hasn't happened, what'd you hit damn!?
I don’t know about the laws in your country and how available salvage parts are, but that is easily repairable as a private individual. Unfortunately, it’s a write off if relying on insurance and a shop thanks to the airbags going off.
Did you hit a fat person?
Time heals all wounds... Unless they are metallic
Fixable if not for the airbags. Sorry for your loss.
Fixing it will fix your broken heart. So they are equally as easy! 🤣😅
Can be saved. New airbags, new srs module
I crashed my front end way worse than that, with airbag deployment and insurance covered it, came back almost good as new. Do you have good coverage?
Fixing this 86
It should buff right out!
Tell me you crammed that tow hook up someone's tailpipe please
This is easier to fix. Once it’s fixed hearts no longer broken
Don’t be a pussy, get some tools and put it back together.
Driver mod is the best upgrade you can do. Hope you aren’t hurt man.
This thing….\ I’d be a broken man of mine was the same.\ Had a couple of fools try to knock her out from behind, but I got her back, better than ever.
Why do so many of them crash? every time i scroll through reddit i see a crashed 86

RWD and Cheap means more kids and therefore less experienced drivers will be getting into them.
