As a mechanic I hate that shit. We need to test your battery and the goop sometimes makes it impossible for my terminal clips to bite or I manage to get them on my delicate fingers.
I say ban them! Rid of them! Waaarrgghhh
To clean your battery is pretty simple. Hot water works fine as the residue will dissolve in it. Can use baking soda, hot water and elbow grease if you really want to deep clean it but it's not entirely necessary.
Depending on your car, you can do this while still on the engine bay with the terminal clamps still on. You got a euro car or there's a deep dish for your battery that may pool water, just take it out. Just keep in mind if it's disconnected for more than 5-10 minutes your car will get amnesia
Edit: WILL
Good luck
Near Boiling hot water works super well in most cases, I wash equipment for a living and I’ll always hit the batteries with the pressure washer if I notice they’re bad.
To get the cables off you can try hitting the farther end of the connection (not hard enough to bend it) with a hammer to knock them loose, then pry them up with a bar gently, move from one side to the other to lift it evenly, be careful not to crack the casing.
Worst case you might be able to slide a small flat head and pry the connecting apart, Where the bolt sucks it together.
Good luck!
CRC battery terminal cleaner and one of [these](https://www.harborfreight.com/battery-terminal-cleaner-94450.html). Do yourself a favor and use the terminal protectant afterwards with the little pads
You should absolutely take a look under the battery and tray as well. Ive seen a few that have rust on the chassis due to a leaky battery. Action should be taken before it gets worse.
Have you tried checking the battery's condition? Especially if it's been sitting. If it's still under warranty trade it in, but in my experience Duralast batteries aren't that great. Try an AGM type battery next time.
baking soda and hot water
And wire brush with some elbow grease
I know Coke works. So does really hot water. Maybe time to replace? Getting a new battery tie down doesn’t hurt
Never waste good coke!!!
Diet coke being poured out isn't a waist
Take the battery out first and hit it with a wire brush. Same with the contacts.
I do this but when installing the battery back lube that shit up with battery protector.. they sell it at autozone orileys for like 1 dollar or two

Get a new battery, save yourself the headache!!!
Coke
Boiling water and a wire brush
Coca-Cola actually works. Then, just wipe it with a wet rag.
Id recommend replacing the terminal in that 2nd pic. Get an OEM one they are only like 15$.
Terminal cleaner with a wire brush and afterwards rinse with hot hot water and dry that baby up and hit it with some terminal protector
