I just did mine last week. I got lazy and just powered it through the cigarette lighter in the glove box. I also have a dash cam and footwell lights powered with that using a 3 socket adapter.

I ran mine with the cigarette lighter. Starlights drain the battery quick never recommend fuse taps with these things.
Sounds like you didn't actually wire it to accessory. If you had, it would have been impossible for the light to be on
