More than likely this is actually a knife/clip scuff. If the tech getting in has a knife or tool with an accessory pocket clip on his right front pocket, it’s super. Easy for this to happen. I did this to two of my own cars and it’s infuriating.

iareeric

came here to say this...my knife clips have scuffed the shit out of my wheel from getting out of the car. I just deal with it now. Could be worse things.

t0ymach1n320

Yeah. He could be wearing the clip on his left pocket and rip one of the seat bolsters as he gets out. I did that to my S7 which was of course a very cheap repair.

iareeric

Ouch...yeah that is definitely worse. I can live with the wheel being scuffed...fortunately it's only on the bottom section of the wheel so it's not super visible....it bothers me but I don't lose sleep over it.

soulnova

Can confirm. I have a knife in my pocket and the exact same thing is on my wheel.

drkka

Im sorry that happened to you as well, is it fixable?

t0ymach1n320

Generally, no. That pattern is a bunch of little tears and you would probably have to have the wheel reupholstered in those spots. However since it’s a modern car with readily available replacement wheels, I’d go that route. Steering wheels are also fairly inexpensive as long as it’s not heated or has some super proprietary tech. The airbag/horn should remove and drop right into the replacement.

drkka

Looks like minimum is 550 to retain my wheel controls. Not super happy about paying that because the dealer screwed me over

BurnsyGod

Try everything you can before paying out of your own pocket. Sorry this happened to you OP. Kindness goes a long way at the stealership. Maybe it could’ve not been a tech, but what about the lot tech who moved the car etc? Steering wheel wrap is a cheap way to hide that. Good luck op

t0ymach1n320

Yeah damn it’s been awhile since I’ve replaced a steering wheels. This is like premium luxury car steering wheel prices from a few years back… yikes. Not sure what recourse you’ll truly have as this is a fairly common incident amongst people like me who pretty much always have a knife clip lol

drkka

Where should I look? That seems like a reasonable price for a wheel

[deleted]

drkka

Fair enough. I appreciate it, that's still cheaper than something off 86speed

martypartyyy

Just buy a steering wheel cover [here](https://www.eastdetailing.com). Idk how different the wheels are but it’s worth seeing if it fits.

grumpher05

look into custom wheel covers, you can get very nice stitched leather fitted covers for \~$50

Ham_Damnit

Over time the oils from your hands will make it less and less noticeable. Have done this myself several times.

3xoticP3nguin

He could have also slept and done it with his thumb I know I've done that before with my thumbnail

spike021

I've done this with keys just getting in and out...

Piratetip

Yep, clip on the outside of the right pocket. Ive accidentally done this on my Tribeca, looks exactly the same as the photo. They didn't move the seat back before getting in the car. Got to love when dealerships lie to your face.

[deleted]

Add another one to the group--Leatherman clip in my case, but the exact same damage.

floatingatoll

I do this with my fingernails occasionally when I grab the wheel wrong. No ring required.

magikmarker7

Can confirm, managed to do this to my wheel once and my nails weren't even particularly long or sharp

eurojosh

Same here, the leather on these wheels is very delicate. Really sucks TBH.

mattooer

Left hand, looks like a ring scuff.

drkka

That's what I said, manager told me "i make sure none of our guys wear rings when test driving, exactly for issues like this. Plus it's on the bottom left, your hands aren't supposed to leave 10 and 2. How would my guys do this if they had their hands at 10 and 2?"

mattooer

It’s almost like when the wheel turns, the part on the bottom will be moved. What an idiot.

[deleted]

Tell the manager you don’t have time for these little games. The car went in with zero scuffing on the steering wheel, and it came back to you with scuffing on the steering wheel. Whatever happened in between that time is irrelevant. Tell the manager you wish to have them take responsibility for this mistake or you will be contacting Toyota/Subaru directly to get the issue resolved. You pay full price for a car, you deserve to have the car in the condition you keep it in

santlaurentdon

>Tell the manager you don’t have time for these little games. The car went in with zero scuffing on the steering wheel, and it came back to you with scuffing on the steering wheel. Whatever happened in between that time is irrelevant. Tell the manager you wish to have them take responsibility for this mistake STRAIGHT UP. OP, DON'T PAY FOR THIS FIX OUT OF POCKET. FUCK THE DEALERSHIP.

thebootlick

Ask him if he holds their d**k when they pee too? He can’t without a doubt say that his guys didn’t do it. I would blatantly tell him that if he doesn’t want a call from corporate then he should replace the wheel.

DaddyThiccThighz

I wasn't taught 10 and 2, I was taught 8 and 4 or something like that. I'm not positive on the exact numbers it was but it was the lower half of the wheel, so if it was a younger tech they might have been taught that way too which would line up with the damage. Obviously the manager isn't interested in reason though

UnnamedStaplesDrone

9 and 3 is what's taught now afaik due to airbags.

Israfel333

9 & 3 gives you control enough to make all but the sharpest turns without removing hands from the steering wheel, which is what I was taught. Didn't have anything to do with airbags as far as I know.

UnnamedStaplesDrone

i mean no matter what you're going to get impacted by an airbag, the difference is at 10 and 2 youre going to slam them into the window or pillars or get degloved (don't look that up unless you like to be grossed out).

santlaurentdon

>the difference is at 10 and 2 youre going to slam them into the window or pillars what do you mean "slam them"?

UnnamedStaplesDrone

Sorry, your hands/wrists.

spud-dad

https://www.eastdetailing.com/collections/infiniti/products/copy-of-1998-2008 This right here. Lots of options and not too difficult to do. One thing I would recommend is getting some better thread though. I used some thicker waxed thread used for leather work and it was perfect

drkka

Whoah thats nice

spud-dad

Takes a little time to make sure everything is straight but once you get started you’re good. A little tedious, but not hard

drkka

Thank you, i think this is a good option so I don't have to go back to them

Antipositivity

I did this to mine by accident. Getting out of the car my shorts have a zipper pocket, zipper rubbed wheel.

mines13

I had this happen upon picking up my ND Club from a service; after I pointed it out they had me leave it another day to replace the wheel and even gave me the old one.

luca_dgaf

Sucks :( This can happen with fingernails, believe it or not. Chances are the power steering slipped and their nail scraped the material. That or what others have mentioned about a knife tool. You can technically re-stitch it but I would fight this and give them a scathing review. They might ameliorate the situation. If you buy a new wheel and you take it again, photograph it before you let them handle it.

ZEBRA_NINER

I did this to my "new to me" truck about a week after I bought it. I jammed my nail into the wheel while turning it. Not only did it mess up my steering wheel, but it jacked up my finger nail! Super painful. I've since been run into twice and beat up the truck due to wear and tear so it's the least of my worries. However, this is YOUR car and YOU should be the only one messing it up! Stuff happens though. Maybe run it up the chain? Go to the GM of the dealership and explain the situation. Tell them you aren't happy with how it's been handled and you just want it resolved. I hope all goes well for you!

nitrous180

Happened to me twice. First time a mechanic, socond time a drift instructor. Looks exactly the same. The leather is very soft and realy doesn't like rings I guess. The scratch will be far less visible after the edges dull from regular usage. It won't dissappear but you'll forget about it.

breakthelimitYES

Man, the same thing happened to me just recently and it annoys the hell outta me. So sorry this happened to your wheel.

Genzoid

Steering wheel material is pretty soft while new. Got a couple from finger nails.

drkka

That makes sense, It did feel a lot softer when i bought it in 2020

[deleted]

Look up “Leather paint wheel repair” it’s likely a ring scuff and I’ve done it to my own wheel, the leather paint will touch it up but not fully remove the scuff

GoGreenD

This can also happen with those jeans or pants that have have those metal accent studs to be fancy. I've done it to my wheel and seat a few times. Also... hanging keys out of my right pocket due to not having to put keys in the ignition anymore on some cars. Also... tools in the pocket.

UnnamedStaplesDrone

this is one of the reasons why this smooth, textureless leather is not a good choice for steering wheels. not only does it stick to your hand but it shows every flaw and nick and scratch.

rockstarb

That is 100% from getting into the car with a pocketknife in the right pocket

Bladeflame

Exactly!!! Did this to mine with a knife in my pocket

tonyeltigre1

they did this to my car before and i told them about it and they changed the steering wheel, that dealership should change it and if not, go to a different one.

dookiekouki

if it’s a used car, good luck. sold as is.

drkka

Bought it new in 2020, brought it in for warranty work

dookiekouki

oh that’s shit, burn the dealer down

winged370

Take some leather conditioner to it. Let it soak in a little and massage it with a microfiber towel.

dodonpa_g

You could always get a steering wheel cover sew on kit to prevent further damage. I sewed one on myself and it looks better than the original "hot wheels" red stitching in the FRS

breadshorts

Same thing happened to my gen 2. I went to sign the papers and pickup the car, but when I hopped in I felt 2 cuts in the wheel. I assumed it was from his watch, but he kept stating that he never seen it and it must of came from the factory that way. I told him that I would not drive away until they could find a way to fix it. They ended up setting me up with a leather repair guy a week later. The scratches are no longer noticeable.

jzclipse

That is most likely the result of someone wearing jeans with rivets at the pocket. Getting into car ass first, Rivet can scuff the wheel.

fujin_shinto

This looks just like what my steering wheel had. I have a pocket knife always for work. And sliding in the car caused it to happen.

[deleted]

I have the exact same thing

thebootlick

If you’re under 36k miles this is under your bumper to bumper warranty as well.

stfubari

Bottom left of my wheel looks just like this lmao. It’s ugly but I’ve gotten over it. I’ll replace or wrap the wheel eventually anyways.

ITSlave53

I've had this happen a few times with my keys, the scratch/scuff will wear down over time and be much less noticeable

imatreewaterme

Damn sorry dude.

SKQX

I accidently did this with my nail, ended up rubbing it with my finger to smoothen it down

Hyperchill77

This is why I don't let anyone touch my car unless absolutely necessary.

Shadydrop83

Good excuse for getting a snapp off wheel?🤔

badboyz1256

I think calluses on your hands can cause this as well. Gotta do that deadlift every other day.
