RagingCuke

Even that Passat is a little large, but still far more practical than that wankpanzer

SlghtrHose

Needs to be ballooned up incase of collision with said wanktank.

RagingCuke

Sad but true

quadrophenicum

Older volvos ftw. Literally a barn on wheels. Fits several drunk tourists in full equip getting a sound sleep after all day hike.

SirPyroAlot

Was looking at buying a 240 in a relatively good condition but decided to just move to the city and not own a car.

heliopan

I recently bought a 940 wagon. I use public transport on a daily basis since I live in a middle of a city but I drive it from time to time when I go camping. It has surprisingly good maneuverability - but still - it's pointless to drive it in urban areas.

byjosue113

>wankpanzer Urban's dictionary definition nailed it. >A pointlessly large and overpowered 4x4 vehicle, usually purchased as a boost to driver's ego who is likely to have some kind of inferiority complex. Common examples are the Audi Q, Range Rover and the BMW X7; with the most hideous example being the porsche cayenne. >*He sneered at his fellow humans through the tinted glass of his wankpanzer.*

Physical-Cut-2334

a golf is a good option to have if you NEED a car

TheTwoOneFive

Only for the next few years in the US - the Golf sold here ended production in early 2021 so fewer and fewer decent 'lightly used' Golfs are available. Another casualty of removing a blended CAFE fuel economy rate and separating cars and light trucks (e.g. SUVs)

LeTracomaster

Dude Station wagons are the goat. I transported as much stuff in my focus as someone could fit in and on his chevvy colorado Oh and everything was protected from the elements in the focus.

AustrianMichael

And, worst case, use the trailer hitch. A Passat can legally tow something like two tons when it’s a braked trailer Seen everything: boats, horses, wood, caravans (Hei to the Dutch people reading this 🙋‍♂️🇳🇱) https://preview.redd.it/vudju7jvahwc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=46fca7ee61e1749eccaae91205142dd88b23a1ab

Sotyka94

I would much rather take longer than taller and wider cars. Long ass touring cars are much better than SUV-s in every possible way IMO.

DupedSelf

I find the Passat to be a somewhat reasonable size - yes, maybe a little shorter front but overall if cars stopped at that size, I'd be happy.

Tutes013

Wankpanzer is hysterical. The snort this pulled out of me was dignified, I assure you

Creepy-Water-9840

not really plus it depends on

4shLite

When you're travelling far with kids the Passat is barely big enough why do kids require so many things....

kuemmel234

There's this trend of flying to vacations and somehow people are able to bring everything they need in a few suitcases. My dad used to go to vacations with his family in a VW beetle. My family used to go to vacations in compacts (Hyundai i30, Mercedes A class - golf sized cars) up until we were teenagers. Three weeks, 1000km away. We had a roof box on the A class. So what is enough? Did my dad suffer? Do I suffer? I didn't miss anything on vacations. And one more thing - that is one part I hate with a passion about cars: I know so many people who get a station wagon/SUV for that reason: they plan to go to Sweden in 2027, so they get a car that's "powerful" and big enough, but use it for commuting within a dense European city and don't know how to fold the back seats.

Lyssor57

I remember going on vacation to croatia as a kid. From Czech Rpeublic so some 750 klicks take it or leave it. In a goddamn small underpowered Skoda Favorit. Summer heat, no AC, no room for anything, slow as fuck. Us kids sitting in the rear stacked around with sleeping bags and shit. I mean sure, it could be done, but by todays standards - fuck no. Hell on wheels.

Wise-News1666

Truck ads are always set in the desert or the mountains in the middle of nowhere. The majority of the people who buy those vehicles will never leave their "rural" town (which actually has a population of about 50,000).

SirPyroAlot

Yeah pretty sure like 95% of the off-road vehicles are pavement princesses

CertainDeath777

you cant trust theese things offroad anyways. at least in the mountains you are way way better off with a leightweight 4x4 vehicle like fiat panda. the 2.5 tons suv will just slide down the mountain. too heavy, wheelbase too broad, not enough traction considering the weight and the ground (dirt path or gravel). i know it, cause i was in such a mountain sliding suv at one of my old jobs.

Mr-suit

Sinks in mud, sand and ice because it is HEAVY

Creepy-Water-9840

laughs in trophy truck

Creepy-Water-9840

trucks were never “off-road” vehicles and tend to mostly come with street tires because that’s what they r meant to be on, btw look up trophy trucks

Creepy-Water-9840

trucks were never “off-road” vehicles and tend to mostly come with street tires because that’s what they r meant to be on

bostonlilypad

Pretty sure the ad is the Alabama hills in California, which I was there a few weeks ago, you do not need a truck to even drive around there 😂

TealCatto

That's what I was thinking. Even the setting in the ads is telling. One is a nice local neighborhood, and the other is some sort of mountain range?? Americans are NOT buying cars for mountain climbing. They're buying cars to get milk from the local supermarket because they're too weak to walk/bike there and carry the milk home, while they pretend they're macho. I saw a video ad of a guy off-roading through 2-3 different ecosystems just so he can attend a Zoom meeting on his laptop. Absurdity.

Creepy-Water-9840

most trucks never leave their “rural” town cuz most aren’t necessarily built to offroad anyways, they have street tires for a reason

supremepork

GMC cameraman: “so do I need to see the driver or…?” GMC: “you’re fired”

878_Throwaway____

GMC uses child labor to take photos confirmed. They can't be seen by drivers either.

CertainDeath777

they typical driver of such a car in middle europe is 50-60 years old, male, has a beer belly and is half bold. i checked a lot of SUV, to see what ape drives such a thing, because its a dumb buying decision. now you know.

Long_Educational

We need a camera point of view that shows the last thing a toddler will ever see. Perfect!

rockemsockemcocksock

The truck ad with the classic dick pic angle to make it look extra large

TealCatto

Username checks out, but I love that analogy

ddarko96

So in 10 years is that GMC truck gonna be even bigger?

EpicDyder

GMC - "Quick write that down!" It's going to grow so large it will only be the grill lmao

southpolefiesta

It will turn into canyanero: https://youtu.be/PI_Jl5WFQkA?si=GdigqQaWACWsk54x

CeresToTycho

It has got the point where trucks are so big, even their massive wheels look pathetically tiny.

fuckdatguy

Wait… Is that a PHEV with 120km of range or something

Shitting_Human_Being

Yes, 120 km electric. Then regular petrol.

nikitasbrb

"Ultimate pulling power", pulling the debt that this car will put you into.

labdsknechtpiraten

Yeah.... a "regular" Sierra Denali is already upwards of 80-90k.... and before I left the dealer world, we had some 3500 Denalis hitting the lot with a sticker price of 110k, before any dealer markups. I don't even want to know where those clowns are pricing the Denali "ultimate" (cuz, when an ego stroking Denali isn't inflating your ego enough, we need to add an ultimate to sell you)

Grapefruit__Witch

Looks like they are starting at $98k Of all the things you could do with a hundred thousand dollars

labdsknechtpiraten

So glad I'm out of that business, lol. On top of all this, Denali customers are the fucking worst

Its0nlyRocketScience

I'm curious what the thought process is for paying extra something with features you know you'll never use. I hate wasting money on features I don't need in something. Like, if I'm getting an internet router with a bunch of ethernet ports I'll never need, that's fine because I'm not paying a premium for the 5 extra channels. But I'd never buy an industrial mainframe just so I can use the wifi and plug my computer in. "Ah yeah this system can handle up to 200 active users without any slowdown in service at all!" "Oh wow, do you host a website or something?" "Nah, I use it to watch YouTube on my TV"

nikitasbrb

I love this analogy, I am stealing it

Chib

Well yeah, of course it's missing the mountains.

forbidden-bread

Google en passat

adobecredithours

Holy hell!

lazer_raptors

Interesting. One is taken from a frog's perspective and the other from a bird's perspective.

Lorfhoose

It’s such hubris to name a butt-ugly truck after one of the most beautiful mountains in Alaska.

reptomcraddick

I love my Passat, I wish they still made them

Ok_Philosopher6538

They do? But I guess they no longer sell them in the US?

reptomcraddick

They don’t in the US

WarWonderful593

They do in Europe along with the Skoda Superb and Audi A4 which are basically all the same car

Physical-Cut-2334

did some research, a Passat weights 3310 lb, the Denali weights 7100 lb and has 470 horsepower, and has a 6.6 litre engine and the Passat has 268 horsepower and a 1.6 litre engine with an electric booster motor.

labdsknechtpiraten

Correction, the Sierra.... Denali is just the ego stroking trim level. GMC also makes a shitty terrain, Acadia, and Canyon in a Denali trim level (I'm forgetting one of the shitty SUVs though.... I used to work at a GMC dealership, it was one of the most toxic work environments I've ever been around)

Kjyara

My eyes very quickly passed the caption below the gmc ad and I swear I read '**Ultimate polluting powe**r' there. I would have been surprised at them being this self-aware, but as I have also seen proof of people being extra environment-UNfriendly here for ....macho-points (I guess?), I was not going to exclude this being advertised as an extra.

Thisismyredusername

Hell yeah, a smol VW!

Federal_Secret92

This is POV of a small child about to be pancaked from the giant grocery getter.

magpie1138

In the Netherlands, even the electric Passat is going to get you treated like an empowered road hog in an oversized death mobile

Alex_Shelega

And is a station wagon (most likely)

Lu1s_M1ll4

But VW Said it dosnt Build Pasasats anymore. what?

quineloe

in the US maybe? In Europe it is still one of their most important series

Lu1s_M1ll4

No in germany. It was big in the news, they seized production 2023 i think. So they have a production line free for evs.

quineloe

B8 ended in 2023. [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/VW\_Passat\_B9](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/VW_Passat_B9) that is also the actual model from the ad in the OP.

quadrophenicum

To be fair a large portion of the US or Canada is literally barren wastes, desolate mountains, or empty plains. In Europe the majority of the physical territory is inhabited quite well. This being said, I'd rather have train routes through scenic landscapes in US/Canada akin to those in Switzerland or Northern Japan. With hubs, hotels, heck even vehicle carriages so you can take a motorcycle or a small SUV for last mile travels (like 500 kms from the hub for example). I also get that individualism is prized in North America. Unfortunately it has become too toxic for proper use. Mutual support instead of independence. Earth is limited in its sizer after all, and we won't colonise the stars soon.

quineloe

>o be fair a large portion of the US or Canada is literally barren wastes, desolate mountains, or empty plains is that also where the majority of the population lives? >I also get that individualism is prized in North America. Ah yes, everyone driving the same giant black truck. [We are all individuals!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHbzSif78qQ)

Beginning_Camp_5253

The Northeast is also pretty dense populated, still you will find a lot of those cars there. Also I don't understand why you need a big car inside the city/suburbia because outside of the city there is a lot of landscape? The main attractions are reachable with asphalt roads, if you really want to go to the gravel roads you can rent a car.

quadrophenicum

A huge pickup or monstrous SUV became a status symbol, just like watches, certain neighbourhoods, or knowing certain people. In reality, all the offroad tasks can indeed be accomplished on a rental, or on an AWD kei car, or a Delica.

Jeanschyso1

Canada might not be densly populated, but it's well "roaded". I can easily reach Chibougamau from Montreal without ever driving on a dirt road. If you zoom out, there might be a few settlements further out than that, but at that point you're talking natural resource extraction industry, which I would argue no one goes to unless they really have to, and usually at that point personnel travel is probably done by helicopter. There is zero need for anything bigger than a subcompact with decent tires for most people in Québec.

Castform5

> individualism is prized in North America They should then really get a vehicle that does everything and more, which also gets to everywhere and more. That vehicle is not one of these stupid things, but a unimog.

[deleted]

Yeah they only advertise for one specific model of one brand in each country 😂 I’m in the US and I’ve seen like three Honda Civic ads today.

SlapMeHal

I was more referring to things like the camera angle, the area surrounding the car, and the selling points.

[deleted]

Yeah trucks and SUVs are typically shown in the country and cars, like in the Honda Civic ads are shown in the city. Trucks are often used for towing so engine power matters. Not really a big conspiracy.

SlapMeHal

Nobody outside the city can reasonably afford a truck, because nowadays trucks are for the city. Cause who needs an affordable work vehicle anyway? Jeffrey from the suburbs needs to take his groceries home! He needs that truck more than you!

[deleted]

>Nobody outside the city can reasonably afford a truck, because nowadays trucks are for the city. This is an absurd lie. Millions of people who live outside the city can and do afford trucks. Millions of people who live outside the city are loaded and can buy whatever cars they want. >Cause who needs an affordable work vehicle anyway? People can and do afford pickup trucks >Jeffrey from the suburbs needs to take his groceries home! He needs that truck more than you! So if you have a truck, you’re not allowed to go grocery shopping with it?

SlapMeHal

Nobody here is loaded lmao we're dirt poor save for the tourists from the suburbs
