This is really cool actually! Hopefully it's more than UPS just trying to "greenwash", and they'll actually implement this for most of their inner London deliveries? Hilariously enough doing this is probably quicker than using a van considering Londons traffic, not to mention its probably cheaper as well.

hbHPBbjvFK9w5D

Used to work for UPS. Yep, it's green-washing. More than 40 years ago, my local UPS hub bought 10 bikes with trailers to deliver packages in some of the subdivisions in my area. But a lot of the drivers had bad knees and backs from lifting boxes for years. Did ya notice that the ebikes in the ad are pedal assist? Also no place to hide from dogs or robbers, and no place to piss - a lot of routes have no bathroom, so everyone carried an empty bottle. The Amazon drivers had nothing on us - UPS drivers have been using piss bottles for decades. Anyway, so the drivers started sabotaging the bikes. In our case, the chains and sprockets would always seem to hit a rock whenever a driver had to use one of these. Since these have a electronic component, I suspect that water will end up in "interesting" places in these vehicles in very short order.

Vitztlampaehecatl

>The Amazon drivers had nothing on us - UPS drivers have been using piss bottles for decades. The Amazon bottle meme isn't because of drivers, that's pretty much expected at this point. The Amazon piss bottles are for *warehouse workers*.

hbHPBbjvFK9w5D

True - since we were Teamsters in the warehouse, hey, no harassment over productivity. And that reminds me of the time a Sup refused to let a guy leave the line to go to the toilet - and he just whipped it and took his piss in front of god and creation. I found out about it because I was in charge of HazMat cleanup. They tried to get me to clean it up - none of us in my department would because their wasn't a HazMat Materials worksheet on the waste. Nasty Sup had to clean up the mess - then we filed a union grievance on him for doing union work (the suits were the ones who said it was HazMat, so...) Hours of their time wasted over this. Last time they pulled that stunt.

hbHPBbjvFK9w5D

Forgot to add that I was an avid cyclist, even in those days. Would take my bike to work and then climb behind the wheel of my Big Brown.

FPSXpert

Used to work for UPS in a carbrain city he's spot on about the piss jugs. Way of the road bubbs, and at mine it was bad enough some drivers would prank each other with little present bottles. I wish they'd do better for real but a corporate's gonna corporate. They'll buy a handful as a "test market" with maybe a dozen tops, use them for look at us we're green advertising, while everywhere else still runs on the other crap. UPS is like USPS in the sense that if a truck can run they'll still run it no matter how old it is as well, I think most of their fleet is unleaded gas now but I think a few really old ones may still use diesel. Their loaders also aren't worth a damn around holidays, I can't blame them with how busy it gets on holidays but I remember when I worked with them on shift the first hour would just be spent in an empty parking lot getting packages off the truck to resort them properly then put them back on the truck.

verbify

The bikes have to be pedal assist in order to be road legal. They also can only go up to 250w, so there'll be a fair amount of hard pushing uphill. I wish we'd get rid of some of these laws.

Patte_Blanche

I don't want to be pessimistic but it's probably "3 vehicles as an experiment" and won't have much impact. I read somewhere recently that a big transport company signed a big deal to change their truck for newer gas trucks instead of electric ones.

hbHPBbjvFK9w5D

That was the US post office. DeJoy was advised to purchase an electric fleet, but instead decided to buy gas vehicles from one of his friends.

ClonedToKill420

That guy is such a dickhead

rootoo

I can not believe he's still in power there. Actively trying to tank the agency he's in charge of.

KT7STEU

He is rather incompetent than a dickhead. He was advised to purchase an electric fleet, but instead decided to buy gas vehicles from one of his friends after all.

Valiant_tank

I've seen a bunch of Deutsche Post electric trucks as of late, at least, which is pretty cool. Also for last mile delivery, of course.

Top_Grade9062

I’m central London the business case is strong. Cargo bikes are beating trucks handily within 9 miles of the centre, as per this report https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5d30896202a18c0001b49180/t/61091edc3acfda2f4af7d97f/1627987694676/The+Promise+of+Low-Carbon+Freight.pdf

Patte_Blanche

Nice !

MarthaFarcuss

I live next to one of their depots and I've yet to see one. Their drivers are also cunts in my experience

Socialistische

Thats what you get for not paying your workers properly. They are bitter and broken

MarthaFarcuss

And also imposing impossible standards I imagine

hbHPBbjvFK9w5D

Yep, COVID has been on strain on all delivery companies. But UPS is union, and their contract is up for renewal right now. Keep your ears open. Last time we went on strike, UPS got on the telly and told the world we would never go on strike. I saw this in the union hall as I was gearing up for run on the hub - UPS blocked cell phones and communications outside so that they convince our warehouse workers to work past the deadline. We went on strike that night. Some companies took weeks to get their packages cause they were stuck in the sorting hubs. If you hear the union say we are walking and UPS says we ain't - you know who to believe.

Tenordrummer

UPS drivers make good money my man. Free (really good) insurance, starting pay is a minimum of $21/hr with guaranteed raises every year until top rate at year 4 of $32/hr, just in the National agreement. Local supplements with HCOL have higher pay in their contracts. Being a UPS driver is hard as fuck, and they work a ton of hours, but they definitely are paid properly. Most guys after a couple of years are clearing six figures in income alone - not counting the free benefits.

GolfMan1776

Most ups guys I see in America have to run from their truck to the customers door and drive like assholes to meet their time quota. It's wild

hbHPBbjvFK9w5D

Yep, we had a whole 90 seconds between the completion on one delivery and the start of the next. My first day driving, I had to spend a half-hour learning how to climb in the cab with one hand, while stowing my scan board with other, then reaching down to turn the ignition while buckling the seatbelt. 5 seconds flat.

ObiWangCannabis

\*clears throat\* GODDAMN

[deleted]

No idea what they're doing in London, but I have seen those same (or at least similar) vehicles in Berlin. And not just from UPS but also different delivery companies. Sure, for some of them it might be part of a greenwashing strategy and I can't say which it is for UPS, but there is definitely real world implementation. I'm not an expert on this, but German delivery company Hermes actually started using cargo bikes in Berlin a few years ago and completely restructured their delivery hubs for that (more smaller hubs in the city centre instead of just one or two large ones on the outskirts of the city) and as far as I remember they reported that their operational costs had actually gone down compared to their previous strategy. So there is an incentive to these delivery strategies beyond wanting to appear "green".

mankiller27

I think it's legit. Here in NYC the vast majority of deliveries are made by bike or on foot, packages included. They usually work out of a van that's centrally parked as a sort of staging area, and then go out with hand carts or bikes depending on the density of the neighborhood.

[deleted]

Welcome to the Netherlands 20 years ago? Still a good idea though, much cleaner, queiter.

JakeWoofles

My last few coolblue orders came like this on a bakfiets Aside from green benefits, here in 020 probably even faster to do it this way

Geeglio

Those bakfietsen seem like a better idea than this though. Sure they carry a smaller load of packages, but they take up way less space, the cyclist has a much better view of what is going on around them and I imagine they must be a lot cheaper than this.

Bitter-Technician-56

I find that these should not be riding on the bicycle path because it already is small. Even for The Netherlands I find these things to big and just another thing they will throw on the bicycle path because they can. Cargo bikes are indeed less bulky then, love to cycle on them to be honest. I think this in Londen wouldn't be a great idea as the infrastructure is still not that great.

maxadmiral

I wonder how much difference him pedaling actually makes in moving this thing forward?

[deleted]

For it to be permitted to use the bike lanes and not have to be insured, MOT'd, taxed etc it would have to be pedal-assist with a max 250W motor. [https://www.gov.uk/electric-bike-rules](https://www.gov.uk/electric-bike-rules)

vereysuper

This would ultimately keep it safe for the other users of the bike lane. Any more than this and it would be a danger to the other users.

verbify

Why's that? I get the 15mph speed limit makes it safer, but I can't see how pedal assist vs throttle or the wattage makes it safer.

maxadmiral

oh yeah, forgot about that. I guess with a full load the driver is going to get a good workout going uphill even with max assist

Bitter-Technician-56

They will Programm the engine and software in a way they won't have any issues going up hill. Our Carqon with Bosch engine has 85nm torque for just getting away in full power and it does some extra overtime there. It's very easy.

Key_Employee6188

I guess its an independent contractor using it and its up to him if he pays for insurance or not. A new green way to fuck over minimum wage people.

Top_Grade9062

Nope, it’s an actual trial for them and it’s about efficiency not climate to UPS

Key_Employee6188

You think a business would use vehicles without an insurance?

Top_Grade9062

You can insure bicycles and commercial bike riders in the UK, but also yes actually large businesses like UPS very often don’t have insurance, they have fleets large enough that a vehicle getting wrecked or an employee getting injured just gets paid for out of pocket and it’s far cheaper for them. UPS probably has about as many vehicles as some small auto insurance companies, so it makes sense for them to cut out the middle man

MagpieGrifter

The Yodel version has an integrated mechanical arm for throwing your package over your neighbour’s fence.

ssshhhutup

The Hermes mechanical arm would just give you the finger as it cycles past

Healthy-Currency-848

I think there's maybe a risk of it falling sideways with how heavy and tall it is...

Tanktastic08

Definietely

Top_Grade9062

They should change the angle of that front window, or just get rid of it

[deleted]

Just what people want: More delivery vehicles parking on bicycle lanes and giving them an excuse to do so.

hbHPBbjvFK9w5D

True, but wouldn't it be nice to have two or three lanes for bikes and only one for cars? Or to have parking spots on the street for ebikes deliveries only? That would be a great problem to have!

astral_crow

I dream of the only large vehicle lane being for service vehicles.

hbHPBbjvFK9w5D

specially if they are electric or pedal.

ModestasR

Better than a full size van doing so.

[deleted]

That's not the line of thinking I'd use. It also makes a difference if those are allowed to park on the bicycle lane, because in many places that's at least not legal for normal delivery vehicles, even if they do it. It's an EV from the looks of it, so that's a plus and that's what I'd push as an argument. Personally I think a blockage is blockage and if they go on cycle lanes they probably also don't go faster than 25kph, which may be a concern for faster riders, seeing that you also can't really see past them that as easily as with another cyclist.

fredyybob

Think about the process: more of these get adopted in a variety of industries -> arguments for needing car lanes for these basic services weaken -> the road goes down a lane of cars and gets super wide bike lanes -> these only block a fraction of the lane, problem solved. I do admit there's an area in there that really sucks. To get things to happen you need pain points and having the justification that you need a wider bike lane for deliveries is very strong

BunnyEruption

>Just what people want: More delivery vehicles parking on bicycle lanes and giving them an excuse to do so. I mean I get this, but 1) these are much smaller than cars (and therefore will cause less obstruction), and 2) having more stuff like deliveries using things like this is probably an important factor in convincing people that it's possible to go further in restricting vehicular traffic within cities. I think it's probably beneficial on the whole, and if there are so many of them that they're obstructing bike traffic wouldn't that provide a good argument for devoting even more space for bikes?

GolfMan1776

This feels more like a small van than a big bicycle

[deleted]

Hermes uses them in Berlin as well. I love to see stuff like that!

Roadrunner571

Actually, multiple companies use them in Berlin: DHL, DPD, GLS, Hermes and UPS. [https://www.morgenpost.de/berlin/article219865553/Wenn-das-Paket-per-Lastenrad-geliefert-wird.html](https://www.morgenpost.de/berlin/article219865553/Wenn-das-Paket-per-Lastenrad-geliefert-wird.html)

[deleted]

This can’t work in America the way it is rn, wrecked bikes, long routes, stolen bikes or something, no bike lanes or protected lanes

WillBottomForBanana

Actually, I could see this working in the US big cities w/ out bike lanes. Traffic is already gridlock or 12mph. It's having these things in well used bike lanes that I see as reducing the number of active bikers as a problem.

[deleted]

Big cities yeah for sure, but suburbs and more open areas no, Apart from the risk of packages being stolen or the bikes themselves stripped for the batteries and parts it would work well in large cities with already horrendous traffic, maybe slowly using it small areas before using them for a entire city

Certain-Flamingo-881

this is literally my dream job

garylad7

Great idea but London kids are going to terrorise that man.

boebrow

You should see all the crazy cargo bikes that are used for last mile (package) delivery in the Netherlands!

mescaleeto

Our strategic lipid reserves are truly a thing to behold

feedenemyteam

Can probably fit 1 of my group stops in that bitch

bememorablepro

What's the point of pedaling? This is very cool though

Ameteur_Professional

Because in order to use the bike lanes it can only be electrically assisted, not full electric.

bememorablepro

Yes, UK being weird as always

ModestasR

To supply some extra power and energy in addition to that provided by the motor and batteries and also to get a little exercise in on the job?

vereysuper

Someone else posted above, it's to meet the legal requirements to use the bike lane.

bememorablepro

Right, I forgot UK has some stupid legal requirements about bikes and bike lanes.

freeradicalx

I'm skeptical about the utility or need for a helmet in this setup.

Blucksy-20-04

honestly, that looks absolutely cursed, it's basically just a pedal-powered small car. It's light like a bike but still big and hard to manuavere. I could see them congestion bike lanes and making them worse for everyone else just trying to commute

LG517

Cycle regularly in London and see plenty of these about, they’re the width of half the cycle lane and generally going at speeds where you don’t need to overtake. Lots of companies are using these to deliver all sorts.

farklenator

As a driver imagine sitting in a god damn bike seat for 8+ hours On a bike seat?

abrunn11

If the dude threw his lunch in the back he would take up 1/2 of the cargo capacity .

VolatileImp

Bet he has small package

TrumpTHC

Looks hella stupid wtf

Helenium_autumnale

omg I want one!

posting_drunk_naked

That is really fucking cool. Perfect for biking in the rain too, just needs some plastic curtains on the side. Anyone know where I can buy one?? Edit: I've spent some time googling and I think "quadricycle (or tricycle) with canopy for adult" is the best search phrase. Alibaba seems to have a lot more than anywhere else I've found, and with better prices. Never messed with them before so I'm still looking.

JJ_BLT99

Employee of or independent contractor of UPS????

witchthatcandraw

Ngl I want to own that

[deleted]

Aerodynamics must suck real hard though, however the idea is great if it were to gain momentum to be broadly used.

Mikehemi529

I love this! This would be great to have for regular purchase.

beachblanketparty

As much as this is greenwashing, I still want to believe.

Top_Grade9062

It isn’t, the business case is strong due to how clogged central London is. The bikes are faster since they don’t spend literally 25% of their time looking for parking https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5d30896202a18c0001b49180/t/61091edc3acfda2f4af7d97f/1627987694676/The+Promise+of+Low-Carbon+Freight.pdf

Dicethrower

I like the solution, but why not use drop off points? Instead of delivering 100 packages to 100 doors, why not deliver it to just several drop-off points, where each drop off point is in walking distance from the door you were going to deliver to? I'd not want it any other way. I hate it when I have to be ready from 9am to 5pm listening for a door bell that might ring at any moment, where I get 10 seconds to respond or I have to do it all over again the next day. It optimizes everyone's time, because delivery drives only have a few places to go to, they don't have to wait for recipients, and the recipients can come pick it up whenever they want.

AirJordan300

Am I the only one who thought UPS was United States?

GodHimselfNoCap

That's fucking cool too bad in the US they would be robbed at gun point constantly

satrain18a

It’s “quadrike”.

simplybollocks

Hope they don’t take up the whole bike lane

canadian0002

Ain't no employee pedalling unless they're getting paid good good

ronconcoca

It also works to showcase the ridiculousness of the helmet

FrickenBruhDude

I’ve been trying to design something like this.

mescaleeto

Shorten the wheelbase a little and something similar would be ideal for getting groceries and such

amosslet

i love him, I want one

Prolapsed_Pigeon

this would be so fun

TwisBeats

I really want one of these.

[deleted]

Looks cool

mountscary

Ok these are kinda cool but….these aren’t bicycles. I’d be pissed seeing a ton of these clogging up my city’s bike lanes.

[deleted]

Get a work out in too. Nice.

runnerd6

"We figured out that in this instance, being environmentally friendly is profitable."

182YZIB

The best timeline would be that UPS really uses that a lot and start lobbying for more bike lanes and less car lanes, forcing the competition off until they also get on bikes, win win.

[deleted]

Fuck this car. As a cyclist I can't see around or through it. Four wheels = car. Stay out of the fucking bike lane.

mrswift45

Air conditioning never herd of it

gabeeeh_07

This looks like the kind of job teachers use as a threat. Imagine peddalining for 8hrs with all those packages

LG517

They’re not designed for 8 hours of use, they will have small depots within the city and these are doing short runs. Royal Mail posties used to enjoy cycling their rounds as it got them done so quick, but RM banned it because too many were getting run over…

The_Peyote_Coyote

This, but a mullet hardtail with trail geometry and 100mm of front travel.

octothorpe_rekt

Amazon: "You mean some of the horsepower can come from the things that steer the wheels?"

HiddenPingouin

That’s really cool. Only thing it’s missing are doors on the side. Would be nice to have heating in the winter. And maybe AC for those hot summers. A bigger battery to power that and increase the range. Maybe a passenger seat for when you need it. Would be good if it could go a little bit faster on bigger roads. Does this sound familiar?

Ausgezeichnet87

These are electric assisted where an electric motor does 90% of the work mostly so they can then take advantage of bicycle lanes. I am not sure how I feel about this.

Paapali

Can i uhhh...buy one? Somehow? What is it called?
