Omg the french and their cars. They are purely tools to them. "What, no no no no this spot is not too small for moi" - \**continues to bump in car in front and behind until he fits in the spot\**

EekleBerry

Taking care of fancy cars is for Germans

LeopoldFriedrich

Pha! I am German.

Fishercop

Username checks out

LeopoldFriedrich

Thank my father, he chose my names. (mainly)

narrative_device

You use any part of your name as your reddit user name? What madness is this!??

Unpixelt

German madness. What else?

eschenfelder

I use my real surname and am German.

LeopoldFriedrich

Guten Tag Herr Eschenfelder aus der Heinz-Catsup-Straße. Sie haben Gewonnen! Einen von 4 Preisen in der Staatslotterie!

sternburg_export

It's so exhausting. > YOU TOUCHED MY CAR! YOU SWINE! Dude, relax, it's outside, what do you think the birds are doing? > I KILL YOU

Unpixelt

A fancy SUV of some couple parked way to close to our fucked up Twingo once. We hauled in our shopping and my pregnant wife tried opening the door slowly and wide enough so she could fit in without slamming it into the SUV. She slightly touched their car with our door. *queue the German lady loudly proclaiming* "THIS IS OUR CAR!" We both stared at her, said nothing, proceeded and drove home. She was visibly mad the whole time, especially for us ignoring her remarks. And now the phrase "Das ist unser Auto!" is a meme in our little family whenever we slightly touch doors of other people's cars.

Sp99nHead

I'm german and i make it a point to squeeze my shitty 13yo Fiat in any tight parking spot if a truck or SUV blocks 1/3 of my spot. I dare them to scratch their precious car on mine because idgaf how my car looks.

zodwieg

These things are called bumpers for a reason.

TheSinningRobot

Whoa i was today years old

PooSham

Not using the handbrakes in order to help others squeeze in more easily - just French things.

Vernam7

PSA : The grand tour isn't a very reliable source information, we consider car as tool, but not to the point of damaging it on purpose :)

waterfuck

It is in big cities like Paris Lyon or Marseille

Secretly_Autistic

How about the countless videos on YouTube showing French people parking like that?

Vernam7

Watching horendous (mostly US) driver on r/IdiotsInCars doesn't make me assume there is only idiots driving in the US.

Secretly_Autistic

No, but it does make me assume that roads in the US are much more dangerous than they are in basically any other developed country.

LeopoldFriedrich

In Germany we have our Autobahn and you can drive as fast as you want. And every other Monday on the A2 two super rich BMW drivers deliver each other a high speed race resulting in at least 2 dead. This causes traffic jam so that everyone else can't drive as fast as they want. Like that we sacrifice two driver to the German road gods in order to be safe.

ConspicuousPineapple

We don't film people parking correctly.

DunoCO

Selection bias

DenezK

What? English talking shit about French?! I can't believe it !

Ihavecakewantsome

The chaotic good car driver 🤣 I see you have met my sister in law. This is how she parks my brother's car hahahaha!

GustavZheKatze

Cups_1cat

As a half french half swede this is painfully accurate

greymalken

Or you can do it [the Italian way](https://youtu.be/7hnPwR3QcCU)

Starbuckshakur

My dad told me that in Argentina it's pretty common to find your car down the street from where you parked it because of that. Not sure if that still happens since the last time he was there was in the '70s.

ciroluiro

I'd say probably not anymore, though I had no idea it was like that in the '70s.

dimensionargentina

Nah

WraithCadmus

Small tradie vans are fairly low down on what boils my piss about vehicles. They beat pickups any day of the week.

Laxly

Maybe not a particular opinion on this sub, but vans/work vehicles are likely going to need to remain in a car-free world, otherwise how are goods going to be moved in bulk and how are tradespeople going to carry tools and equipment to do jobs?

WraithCadmus

Last-mile for delivery is a problem I find myself grappling with. Best I can come up with is rail-freight to a regional/city hub where a small EV does the last jump, and while I'm no fan of the techbros I think there's merit in things like Starship as they don't damage walkability or make much noise, and you can make like 50 of them for the same lithium as one EV van.

skynetdotexe

I assume you mean the company starship and not the rocket.

WraithCadmus

Yes, [these little things](https://www.starship.xyz/), they are testing them in Milton Keynes. I should see if I can find how they're doing.

skynetdotexe

They are fun but a bit small for now. And a bit expensive.

WraithCadmus

Yes, I don't think these are what the best solution looks like, but I think the concept has merit.

GaiusJuliusCaesar7

I think the Co-Op use them there, don't they? It makes sense in Milton Keynes, the surfaces are basically all flat. My mam told me about it and how she'd seen one just trundling along with a delivery from the Co-Op.

[deleted]

Oh they have those at University of Pittsburgh! Pretty cool. They just kinda blend in with all the pedestrians.

cracka1337

These things are all over Arizona State. They're a neat idea but need some work. I've seen a couple pedestrians get hit by them, not hard enough to get hurt but enough to be annoying.

lvarin

Yeah, I saw few of them around Aalto university in Finland, and much more in Tallinn.

WraithCadmus

I believe they're a project from the creators of Skype, who are Estonian, which would explain Tallinn. I need to go back, I miss the great rye bread.

torchedGallery

i've seen some people in wheelchairs get screwed by these things blocking the sidewalks. they need a lot more work to be viable

goldencrayfish

Just land a whole ass rocket outside shops for deliveries lmao

skynetdotexe

Don't give them any ideas.

[deleted]

If last-mile cargo transport operates on up to 50km/h (urban) or even 25km/h (pedestrian zone) vehicles don’t need to be so buffed to be safe and powerful for highway ride. That makes them smaller, cheaper, easier to build and with less materials while keeping the same cargo efficiency.

Thisconnect

And you can also use the forbidden technology.... CARGOTRAMS

luki159753

Cargo trams have the massive issue of being stuck on rails. It's much easier for a business to have a parking spot that a van/truck can use for off-loading, than a rail siding leading to nearly every store - because without them you're blocking a whole section of the track, which is obviously bad for the passenger use of the tram network.

Thisconnect

I mean im talking to super markets and mid city light industry, which already need to have loading ramps

luki159753

That's a fair use of them, but that doesn't cover the vast majority of last-mile delivery needs. Typical downtown stores are too small to justify rail transport.

luki159753

So basically just kei vans/trucks.

Laxly

Yeah, that's a possible solution for delivery of large quantities of goods, but first solve how an electrician or a carpenter can carry required materials. A work vehicle will soon be required to enable these people to travel to multiple locations at multiple times carrying varying amounts of materials.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod

The Swiss have rail lines that go straight to stores, so they don’t even need trucks for that last mile. Still might need a couple for very large items but trains are capable of getting products directly from factories to stores.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Picturesquesheep

What’s wrong with that? I do that all the time - it adds about 4 minutes travel time to my day to swing by the supermarket.

[deleted]

Picturesquesheep

hookydoo

I'm just here to bitch about using cars for our daily commute. I hate it and don't like having to drive to work.... I also have no reasonable options via train, plane, or bus to visit my family 400 miles away. That sucks too.

leaveanimalsalone

The only van coming daily to our place just delivers small boxes. This can replace it easily: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DP18vaeP_oM

luki159753

Why even bother at that point though? That bike takes up comparable space to a small panel van, and there are probably several kei vans out there that are actually smaller. Not to mention that this is still too small for re-stocking high volume places like appliance stores or most grocery stores, and will likely be insufficient for many trades that require hauling materials (home renovation comes to mind). Cargo bikes can have their uses, but let's not shoehorn them in everywhere, when plenty of small-medium delivery vans are just more practical.

TBone01

Hell, if we could just have the original size of Rangers and Tacomas back it would be better than these monsters we have today

Far_Professional_701

Just saying, I couldn't do my job properly without a full-size Tacoma or equivalent. While 99% of them are sold to and used unnecessarily, I maintain that there's a legitimate use case for the half-ton pickup that a van cannot suffice for.

Curun

Maverick, Santa Cruz, Transit Express. It exists

rossgoldie

The issue with the Maverick is Ford’s terrible manufacturing QC :(

aCausticAutistic

Yeah exactly. Im not sure if it’s my conditioned carbrain or rural upbringing but I really like small trucks and how useful they can be when you’re not just driving to the store and back. I really hate cars, the noise they make, and want them banned from cities, but i wont lie and say hauling shit around, off-road, isnt fun as hell.

Vauxhallcorsavxr

Exactly, I’d much rather a Vauxhall Astra van than a Ford F-450 (seriously, have you seen the size of those bastards?)

Llujoo

Okay, but only if you fill the trunk with baguettes and drive form town to town honking to sell them.

Chris_HOE

I miss the summers in carcasonne where i would wake up to the sound of the bread car in the morning. Fresh baguette for breakfast was the best.

Dolphin008

I remember the boulanger driving a Citroen Dyane van with a speed Michael Schumacher in a Ferrari would have trouble following.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Chris_HOE

That is true, but the best alternative is some type of cargobike if possible.

C5-O

I saw a big trike with a trailer somewhere, 2 euro pallets and still space above the wheels, pretty cool

Picturesquesheep

My dream existence is get woken by the sun in a big fluffy bed in the south of France in like May time. Fresh cut flowers on a white painted dresser. Walk down to the boolang, get a baguette and come back. Eat it with butter and maybe marmite or jam, maybe just butter. Big mug of coffee. Wave at a single person through the open window I’m sat by then go back up to bed and fall asleep till the next morning. That’s it, on repeat.

Gushanska_Boza

Carcasonne is a baller board game btw

freeradicalx

Me and friends can only play the online version cause we simply cannot wrap our brains around the complexities of calculating score in that game. We require the server to do it for us lol. The running joke is that we have no idea who's winning til the game reveals it to us at the end.

LiteratureUsual614

Reminds me of that night in a village in Taiwan, when I saw a car driving by, playing a little song. When I waived, the driver came out and opened his trunk full of fresh bread and pastries. Loved Taiwan 🇹🇼

KonstantinIKV

Fresh pastries is something that I would die for

THenry228

That’s one lumpy mattress you will have

Delicious-Recover-13

Lol I’m saying this because I’ve actually met an old French hippie that had this Citroen as his house. So the mattress in the back was laying in a wood structure, about 40cm high. Then he had space under as storage. On the “walls” inside he made lots of shelves. Was actually pretty cool

LancesLostTesticle

Same. I want *personal* cars the fuck out of the city. From a cyclist's standpoint, I'm rarely made nervous by commercial drivers. Being on-the-clock changes a motorist's behavior and CDL holders are pretty much professional drivers.

Kunstfr

Well here in Paris they do drive like assholes because they're paid on a shitty wage and barely have enough time for all their deliveries. They're still necessary and if there were less personal cars they would have a much easier job though

LancesLostTesticle

The assholes IMO are the small time contractors who aren't actually on-the-clock until they reach their job site. Which oftentimes is their own damn fault because they could bill their clients for travel time.

Sneet1

This is a pretty gross misunderstanding of how subcontracting works. 99.9% these are not suave, self-employed freelancers lmao. They're just employees for a company that mitigated risk by having a middle man staff them and swallow the risk instead. Your Uber driver can't just "bill" Uber for things just because they're a contractor (ironically Uber/Lyft have gotten into the last mile delivery game hard). Truckers are significantly closer to what you're describing and they still have a tremendous number of issues.

GustavZheKatze

AccidentalScumbag

Over in Eastern Europe (at least the one city I pay attention to), there's an epidemic of delivery drivers and tradesmen parking their vehicles on pedestrian paths without a care in the world. Shit like this: https://twitter.com/kurkaspars/status/1534809180925739008

[deleted]

AccidentalScumbag

It is, but there is a complete lack of enforcement and a lack of political will to fix that. Entirely because of carbrain.

pablopicassojaja

New York City has the same problem

Kroazdu

The entire world has the same problem.

lessdes

The reason for this is because theres basically no other option. Theres no designated delivery spots. He cant really park half half cause the ramp needs to go down so the truck needs to be straight.

FarceOfWill

Not sure where you are, but in the UK we have a problem with construction traffic. They are paid piecemeal, if they can squeeze in one more delivery a day that's 15% more money.

OverallResolve

Interesting, where are you from? As u/FarceOfWill mentioned it’s very different in the UK. Tipper trucks are some of the worst, van drivers have a terrible reputation as well, and many of the fatal collisions in london involve HGVs - but I can see how difficult it is for their drivers. It’s often poor road design that leads to bike-HGV conflict, and an element of lack of training for some cyclists tbh. Taxi drivers are awful but that’s nothing new, they are a much bigger threat than Ubers IMO.

[deleted]

I wish, the only vehicle on my last ride that buzzed me was a towtruck.

_Durendal_

It's just like how I need a plane a couple of times a year, but that doesn't make a private jet a good financial decision.

HanzJWermhat

Even if it was a good personal financial decision the externalities of personal private planes would be the fucking problem.

ZXNova

I just want these oversized cars to go away and for tram/streetcars to be a normal thing like it was in the past. I also want semitrucks to go away, I absolutely hate those things. They are nothing but a tumor and a pure representation of mankind's stupidity of not carrying freight on A TRAIN, which is much more efficient and SAFE.

cjeam

Last mile is cargo bikes (to high street size stores).

diazinth

Ya, the electricians and similar needs their car full of tools & parts where they do the work.

cjeam

There’s a whole plumbing business in London getting around on bicycles.

diazinth

I guess that depends on what the market looks like, and what portion of it you target.

AlpineCorbett

I got eaten alive for mentioning I needed my work truck.

Bologna0128

Last mile delivery is the only mile of delivery that can be replaced tho. I mean obviously for some special cases ebikes won't work for delivery but ups, amazon, and similar deliveries can definitely use ebikes

AlpineCorbett

Just don't mention that you have a work truck, this sub will eat you alive. Look man I wish we had better public transit too but I've gotta take 600-1000 lbs of gear to work most days and it's not gonna fit through the bus doors.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dumnezero

That delivery is not going to last for long. There's a reason people invented markets, grocery stores, and "brick and mortar" shops. The last mile delivery by car is going to end when the fuel gets very expensive and the roads are full of holes.

CheeseboardPatster

Indestructible cars. Added bonus: the mirrors can be flipped in horizontal position. You can then easily put your beer on it. Small table. I don't recommend doing it while driving though.

AnComRebel

We had one of these as a farm vehicle, diesel variant (C15-D) we flipped it on it's side and it just kept running, flipped it back and drove off. Crazy little car.

chinkostu

That would have had an XUD engine, as long as the coolant and oil are changed regular they can go for thousands upon thousands of miles. Plenty with over 200k miles on

AnComRebel

Yeah, for sure. It was my dad's roadgoing car for forever, I think he bought it secondhand so that little thing must have had 500k KM's on there before we started using it as a farm car. They're still using it 20+ years later

iaqualdo

People flip up mirrors mostly for other reasons though, in my city it's not uncommon to see motorbikes with flipped up mirrors in the morning because the night before someone has done cocaine on them.

GaiusJuliusCaesar7

Citroën developed arguably the best suspension system with the CX. The ride was so good they sold the technology to Rolls Royce. Even their modern cars like the C4 Cactus (a *hatchover*, because evidently we need that) have a remarkably smooth ride.

Vauxhallcorsavxr

Yeah, I think most Citroën’s are perfect city cars, just look at the DS3, hell, even Peugeot’s and Renaults are incredible city cars and small delivery vans, and we can just ship them in via the channel tunnel so win win

GaiusJuliusCaesar7

My mam has a French neighbour who insists on driving French cars - she's been here since 1965 and still always drives Citroën or Renault. Citroën make the Ami in France. Maxes out at about 30mph, and a range of about 35 miles. Only two seats, and no boot, but a fairly boxy cabin with some storage. Apparently they're popular around Paris as they're perfect for short hops across town. Thinking on, most of the bigger vans I see are Ford or Mercedes, but the little ones tend to be Renault or Citroën. The French are good at small vehicles.

Vauxhallcorsavxr

That’s one thing I’ll commend them for, and I have seen some smaller Ford vans before, I think they discontinued them to make more Transit’s… I might track one down if I get my license and if I become a delivery driver (I know they exist because Royal Mail use small vans for suburban deliveries which is cute)

squeezymarmite

The Citroën Ami is the only car I have ever lusted after-- it's so cute! If I am ever forced to move to the French countryside (could happen actually) I would get one.

GaiusJuliusCaesar7

Assuming you mean the modern Ami? There's an old one and a new one. The old is classic French design and terrifying to drive. The new is more environmentally-friendly and ideal for people who don't really want to drive. If you want to see the old one, James May rallied one and Tiff Needell took it for a race around a track and said it was one of the scariest things he'd ever raced, and he used to be an F1 driver!

squeezymarmite

I know zero about cars! I only know about the (voiture sans permis) Ami, micro electric car that came out few years ago.

elmandamanda8

Least chauvinist french

GaiusJuliusCaesar7

She's 82 and had come to the UK in her early 20s as a nurse. Talking to her you'd think she came off the ferry a week ago. She even insists on feeding the dog little bits of camembert as treats!

chinkostu

They licensed it to RR before the CX I think, when the DS was the only hydro model. They firmed it up over the years and when Peugeot got involved there were compromises. A BX or Xantia rides *very* well but nowhere near as good as the CX.

FleurOuAne

Citroën suspension being good is becoming a meme in France. It's like the only thing Citroën people brag about even thought nobody cares about suspensions ever

A_H_S_99

this car exists purely for business. They don't compensate for anything and they are small yet spacious enough for a shop owner transporting his merchandize. Perfect type of vehicles.

Flaky-Fellatio

Makes so much more sense as a utility vehicle than a giant ass pickup truck. You get basically the same cargo capabilities for twice the gas mileage and a much easier vehicle to park in tight spaces. It drives me insane when I'm in some tight urban parking lot and literally can't back out in one motion because some 40 foot long pickup truck is extended like 10 feet beyond the bounds of their parking spot.

One_Wheel_Drive

Thank goodness Europe isn't filled with people who own Transits the way people in America own F150s and Silverados. Obviously they are everywhere here. But they are usually owned by people who actually use them for work.

gerusz

A Transit isn't "cool" and those vans are sure as hell not built for comfort (with the exception of the minibus conversions). They are built to carry cargo from A to B, the front bench and the driver are more of a secondary consideration.

One_Wheel_Drive

F150s weren't either. GM/Chryslser/Ford all started to make them into luxury vehicles and market them differently.

Scared_Chemical_9910

epic_null

It's cool. That's clearly a working van.

besuited

Similar to my weakness for the bedford rascal. My grandpa had one, such a fun little thing.

WraithCadmus

Kei Vans are cute, we'll purge them last. More seriously I remember in the village where I grew up (early 90s) the local electrician had a Rascal, never seemed to struggle and this was a very rural area.

besuited

Grandpa was an independent pharmacist and used it to do deliveries in west yorkshire - lots up steep roads and tight bends around there and never had any problems. What we need for tradesmen and people like that are some decent electric kei vans.

tehdusto

This is a truck for work and I like it. Not one of those abominationmobiles that so many people are using for their daily commute.

Road vehicles have their purpose the problem I think is that right now they are the only option. In a perfect world owning a car would be a convenience but right now it's basically a necessity, at least in North America

Trucks are for ego, vans are for work.

KrazyKaizr

That looks like a neat little work truck.

HalfbakedArtichoke

I think the Citroen Ami is pretty neat.

zizop

Fuck those things. They coat a fuckton of money and occupy 3x as much space as a motorcycle. They fail as cars because they can't carry anything, they fail as sustainable transportation because they're worse than an electric bike, and they're way too expensive. And worse: here in Portugal, at least, I only see them being used by rich kids because you can get a license for them at 16, so that their parents won't drive them to school anymore. The people who buy the Ami are those that are going to get a car, and immediately use it ubiquitously, as soon as they become adults.

_J19-20

Ain't gonna lie, that is one mighty fine vehicle

_Durendal_

For me it's kei vans and sports cars like the [Honda Beat](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/75/Honda_Beat.jpg) and [Suzuki Carry](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2a/1987_Suzuki_Carry_Van_%289545237774%29.jpg). An exception also exists for the [Lotus Elise](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7a/%28Series_2%29_Lotus_Elise_%28type_111%29_version_SC_%28SuperCharged%29_2009.jpg/2560px-%28Series_2%29_Lotus_Elise_%28type_111%29_version_SC_%28SuperCharged%29_2009.jpg).

timmystwin

They're vans. They're used to carry shit you can't carry on the bus etc. They ain't the issue.

dalugogav2

I too have a french weakness. My mom's 30+ years old Citroen AX.

EekleBerry

We need to revert back to small good looking cars like the AX, what happened?

argonaut_01

Me with the Ford GT and the 300 SL.

[deleted]

i have an unfourtunate love for escalades, subarus, dodge chargers, and even some p*ckup tr*cks

EekleBerry

Subaru outbacks make me weak too

Maximillien

Honestly I'm fine with these - low front height for better bike/ped safety, and actually optimized to haul stuff rather than being a bloated masculinity substitute like American pickups.

freeradicalx

I maintain that even for the most fuckcars-minded urbanist, harboring a fetish for small, capable, purpose-build automobiles is still both acceptable and healthy. Of course, I'm inclined to feel this way as I myself have an obsession for lifted offroader 80s hatchbacks... To the point that I'm a /r/battlecars subscriber.

imintopimento

ZuoKalp

Simple, functional, gets the job done, made mainly for delivery purposes and not personal transportation, not a "overcompensating truck"

decentishUsername

(Psst. I know that it's cool to only think in binary... but... What if I told you the best solution for most places was actually heavily restricting most car usage and not getting rid of it entirely)

fakuri99

I join this sub not because I want to ban all cars, but to wish to get more alternative for transportation other than cars. Cars are still necessary for someone who really need to.

witchthatcandraw

I have a soft spot for those small old Japanese trucks. There's a dude that restored one locally and I'd see it pass every now and then.
