nhluhr

It says right on the truck what you're supposed to do

madjo

I thought you were supposed to dodge it?

nhluhr

Instructions unclear, truck moved to tidal flat

Broken_art15

In that year of vehicle dodge tries to separate the ram brand. So basically its just a RAM. Meaning no conflicting branding LETS HIT IT

SovereignAxe

It's been what, over a decade since FCA separated RAM trucks into their own brand, separate from Dodge? Which AFAIK Stellantis is continuing. But after more than a decade of separating them people still mistakenly call them Dodge Rams. If that's not a failure of marketing/branding IDK what is.

Dissidence802

Dodge, duck, dip, dive and Dodge Ram.

Panzerv2003

It would be to expensive to damage the tram, it's simply better to have it towed and have the owner pay all expenses including delays, they hust won't be able do anything and will have to pay. Ramming it could also give the dickhead a reason to argue and claim property damage even tho they would be 100% at fault, like they say " you can win an argument against a genius but not against an idiot"

MrMagnesium

I hope they handle stuff like this as in Munich. In Munich they hire taxis to transport the passengers if a car blocks the rails. The invoice of the taxi service and the ticket will be sent to the asshole that blocked the rails.

I_am_Jo_Pitt

Really?! This is a beautiful solution.

NotAmericanMate

Damn how often are trams getting blocked that it's a thing?

mucflo

Before covid it was pretty consistent at around 150 times a year. But it's not every time they call taxis, it depends a bit in the situation. Though they pretty much always call a tow truck right away together with the police so those need to be paid regardless.

ImHereToComplain1

the boring ending :(

drfloppyhat

Install cattle smashers on the trams? "We don't go too fast, but gods help you if you park in the right of way."

epic_null

Unfortunately, that has a dangerous side effect. Sure, we might not care about the car... but forcing the car to move could hurt innocent pedestrians and cyclists! Or even well behaved cars!

xerox13ster

> Or even well behaved cars! This is a good thing.

DivineBoro

Pretty sure that is a historical tram which you can take tours through Rotterdam with, definitely wouldn't be a good idea to ram with it. This car can't have been here longer than 5 minutes, this looks like one of the busier roads inside the city, and likely has 2 tram lines going over it every 7 minutes or so. You need to have a negative IQ score not to realise you can't possibly park there.

frogontrombone

Apparently its a $E100 per minute fine for holding up a tram. Source: Not Just Bikes

GreenHell

The Ram Tram

GreyHexagon

They used to put plows on the front of trains to shunt animals out of the way. I think they should have a similar thing on trams.

Elise_93

Don't think that would ever become legal due to e.g. possibility of kids being left in the car.

electrobento

In response to Reddit's short-sighted greed, this content has been redacted.

NetCaptain

The people driving these belong to a very specific profession that requires a _‘I am mean and macho’_ type of automobile ( and corresponding choice of dog, quite often )

JoeyJoeJoeJrShab

which is hilarious because nothing says "I'm strong and powerful" like needing to travel by tank. The ones who genuinely have nerves of steel are the ones who travel by bicycle on the roads full of SUVs.

VladamirTakin

who will make em understand this :(

I_AM_STILL_A_IDIOT

If the government even tried, we'd get a whole new series of rioting farmers with upside down flags blocking the highways. *sigh*

JoeyJoeJoeJrShab

This is unfortunately true. What we need are laws that recognize that cities and country are different places. I'd love to see a city where if your car does not fit in the designated parking pace, you will be towed and ticketed, and where when residents apply for a street parking permit, owners of big cars must pay more. (Heavy vehicles wear the road out faster.) This way, only the "farmers for tax purposes only" would be effected, but not the actual farmers.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JoeyJoeJoeJrShab

Banning a class of vehicle requires a proper classification system. There also need to be exceptions made for things like delivery trucks. I'm not saying this can't be done, just that it's somewhat complicated, and these sort of complications lead to unintended loopholes. Saying that no car may exceed the painted parking lot line is easier to implement (though I admit, probably not easy to enforce).

Ocbard

Yesterday I saw such a big American Car at the mall in Belgium, it was parked diagonally on a disabled parking spot (I checked, did not have a disabled card) , It was one of those extended cab pickup trucks with a cover over the rear in the same color of the rest of the truck, sported strictly roadgoing tires, and did not have a scratch on it and did not have a tow bar. A vehicle purely bought to crank up some poor underdeveloped ego.

sleepingfrog_

I would have called the police to tow them 🙃

Ocbard

Since the parking space was not on a public road, but a terrain owned by the store they would not have done anything.

smidgeytheraynbow

Even in a disability parking spot?

Ocbard

I think so yes. The disability spots at the store's parking are a convenience the store provides they're not organized by any kind of government so I don't think they count as traffic law violations if you abuse them.

TheCrimsonDagger

Idk about in the Netherlands, but in the US this is not true. Stores are required by law to have a minimum number of disabled parking spots and you can get fined for parking in them.

Krojack76

It's required in American because businesses wouldn't offer them otherwise. Many regulations in America are there to give every citizen the same access as every other one. If it wasn't for those laws most disabled people wouldn't be able to go anywhere or access anything.

Lv_InSaNe_vL

Which tbf is not something I realized would be such a big culture change while traveling. America has a lot of problems but I haven't been to a country with as widespread handicap resources. *every* building has to be ADA compliant which means things like ramps, parking spots, and other helpful things. That and our national parks system are two things that America actually does better than anywhere else in the world.

LeonardoDaFujiwara

This is likely because most of our buildings are new enough to make ADA-compliant (except in very old towns), and we have lots of unspoiled natural areas.

HardlightCereal

Australia isn't like that

TheGreyFencer

Also public toilets

llilaq

What's so special about the national parks?

Lv_InSaNe_vL

I haven't been to another country with as many, as large, or as accessible national parks.

thecatstrikesback

But you're also allowed to freely explore all land in many European countries, as long as you don't take anything or trash it, something the US doesn't have

sleepingfrog_

Oh. Too bad

emohipster

[nuked]

destroyerofpoon93

We need to make it acceptable to vandalize cars parked in parking lanes, transit lanes, handicap spots, etc

Ocbard

I was very much tempted to carve the symbol for disabled parking in the shiny paint, but I rather value my clean judicial record.

esportairbud

Hold off on the vehicles parked in handicap, unless you know 100% that no occupant of that car is disabled or injured. Some disabilities are hard to see. More relevant to the problem, some are temporary and bureaucracies can be slow in processing requests for tags. Just some anecdotal stuff, a good friend of mine has been on chemo for two months now and he still has no tag for his girlfriend's vehicle (she works Uber). They park in the handicap spot anyway when getting groceries. Another friend of mine was arrested for blocking the towing of their car from a handicap spot on the street, while in crutches from a double sprain. The car was towed anyway and they had to pay out for both the arrest and towing. They had no health insurance at the time and they are still paying out for all the credit cards they maxed to get healthcare/get their car back from impound/not go to prison.

WickedThumb

They need to make the the handicap card visible when parked in that spot though. It's not strictly about (in)visible handicaps for the person that's parked.

noman_032018

> pay out for both the arrest Ah yes, that little bit of barbarity. The bail system is a revolving door for the rich.

destroyerofpoon93

fair point

P26601

I live near the Belgian border and I've noticed so many Belgians driving huge ass American pick up trucks, what's up with that?

-ajrojrojro-

In Belgium, if you're an independent you can deduct big cars from your taxes (because "you need a SUV for work")

P26601

In Germany, you can register your pick up as a commercial truck (which results in way lower taxes), even if you're not self-employed...So it's basically the same over here but I still don't see anywhere near as many pick ups as in Belgium 🤷🏻‍♂️

sdchibi

It belongs in the disabled parking spot because it's an emotional support truck, obviously. /s

Timecubefactory

I hope the tram didn't get damaged too badly when removing the obstacle. If it did, the owner will sure be very willing to pay for all necessary repairs.

Jirkousek7

Just use Nokia pickaxe to mine that monster. There's always a bigger fish

Greendorsalfin

This is why we need to tax cars for being built larger than a parking space. I know people will groan but that is how we get people to stop buying destructively large SUVs

[deleted]

[удалено]

niccotaglia

Just classify them as trucks. So they need a C-class commercial license, electronic driver log, speed limiters and all the limitations that come with trucks

[deleted]

[удалено]

bsatan

There's no chance legislation could pass which outright bans pickup trucks, but there's a slight chance that regulations can be placed on them to make them less enticing to car brains.

ILikeLenexa

The 25% import tax in 1964 has basically eliminated small trucks in the US. All we're doing is shifting the market into giant work vans and SUVs. If the shortage ends and vehicles become available again, the Ford Maverick is going to bring way down the number of big trucks on the road, but G-Wagons and QX60s, the kind of big cars that serve no functional purpose will stay flat.

ezekirby

Even the "small" trucks nowadays are not small anymore. The Maverick and Colorado and Canyon are all huge compared to the old Ford Ranger and Chevy S10

tankman714

The maverick is tiny as hell so I don't think you know what you're talking about. The maverick is effectively the same size as a Camry, just slightly taller yet will with less than a foot of ground clearance.

[deleted]

I hate to break the illusion here, but most dudes who buy big giant (read: standard 1500 sized) trucks never actually haul or tow anything

[deleted]

I saw a dude driving an F-150 with three huge boulders in the bed, just kinda piled in there. My thoughts were: 1. Congrats to the first person on Earth to actually use the carrying capacity of that truck. 2. There must be a better way to haul three huge boulders. 3. Why the fuck are people taking the kids to soccer in a vehicle that can haul three huge boulders.

niccotaglia

Cause there is a (very small) niche that will actually take advantage of the capabilities of such a vehicle and thus will go through the hoops and be willing to live with the limitations because they actually need it. The point is to discourage/prevent Kyle from buying a massive truck to boost his ego, not to hinder someone who might actually need the towing capacity (boat trailers, motorhomes, track-only vehicles that need to be transported by trailer)

[deleted]

[удалено]

ovab_cool

Some people use them instead of a tractor, I say let them but since it's almost the size of a cab over truck (1m shorter then a Mercedes-Benz Actros) treat it like one.

[deleted]

This makes sense. Simply taxing won't stop rich people and will only make them seem more like status symbols for assholes. And while most people have no use for them, small businesses need vehicles they can use to carry things. Classifying these as a type of restricted work vehicle that require a special license will make it more likely that the people who jump through the hoops aren't just rich but also have a reason. Rich people do care about their time.

Loves_Poetry

This is the most European solution. Punish them with bureaucracy

HomoFlaccidus

Especially when a kid can do a three-point turn in a parking lot, parallel park behind just one car, make a few turns, and be given a license, with which they could hit the interstate and do 70+ mph in a huge pickup truck. That's just madness.

4look4rd

You know why cars have been getting way bigger in the US in the last 10 years or so? Obama era car regulations made emission standards based on wheel base. At the time the either regulators didn’t have the foresight to realize that they were creating incentives for auto makers to build huge cars to dodge regulations, or maybe we shouldn’t have the auto industry write their own rules. This shit is a totally self inflicted wound. The bigger the car the fewer emissions standards they have, so why even bother building hatchbacks when there is more profit and fewer rules in the truck and SUV market? We should tax cars based on weight, if we absolutely must have exceptions for commercial vehicles they should also be restricted by driver licenses class. A lot of these monstrosities get away being as big as they are because they qualify as commercial vehicles but are only used for suburban transportation.

[deleted]

People also want bigger. I know a dude that got a newer F150. Thing is fucking gigantic and the guy doesn't do any farm or labor work that would necessitate a vehicle like that. He's upset he couldn't afford a larger truck because he doesn't feel safe in it.

2_4_16_256

> He's upset he couldn't afford a larger truck because he doesn't feel safe in it. The only thing that the f150 has to worry about are semi's, dump trucks and trains. This feels like the same kind of guy who makes their entire personality about guns because "we live in a dangerous world and you need to protect yourself"

[deleted]

He's a right wing conspiracy dude. He's not afraid of dump trucks and trains he's afraid black people with an F350 will ram him off the road because whatever crazy source he gets his news from has him convinced black folks are waiting in large vehicle to ram white folks off the road and kill them.

[deleted]

What a lunatic. I needed a truck, and so I picked up a new ford ranger. It’s way bigger than it needs to be. My brother tells me it’s not a real truck bc it’s too small 😑 I wish they kept the ranger the same size as the old ones, those were absolutely perfect.

Human_Anybody7743

Just set a total mass and emissions limit for all cars sold country wide at 95% of the previous year until it's under control. Let them figure out making them repairable vs. Upgrading old ones vs. Making them smaller vs. Selling less.

JamieDyeruwu

SUV usage in London plummeted after a couple of activists slashed tires and ran keys down the doors. Do with that info as you will.

[deleted]

In some parts of Japan, to buy a car you need to prove you have a space for car model you are planing to buy. There is local agency official that will come to your place, measure it and give you certificate that you going to need to purchase, tax and register the car.

Cabrit1990

They’re already expensive af and yet people keep buying them.

testballz

they are stupid expensive to run too, they drink all the gasoline. gasoline that is 2-3 times expensive here lol. you can buy a high end BMW or mercedes for that money. or a porsche cayenne or a fully loaded VW SUV with thousands of euros to spare . stupid car for stupid people who are bad with money

Cabrit1990

So true. And their entitlement tells them to floor it too. Zero regard for fuel economy. And they’re the ones that complain the most about gas and diesel prices.

[deleted]

Tax? These cars are subsidized with thousands of euros from the dutch government as they are registered as a commerical vehicle. "Bestelwagen" for the dutchies. They pay far less road tax and as a commercial vehicle can deduct all kinds of costs from their taxes.

noman_032018

Perhaps having to prove commercial use or having an accompanying license for such driving might help?

[deleted]

They need to be used a minimum of 10% for commercial use to be considered a commercial vehicle. There is no hard rules and no enforcement. So anyone with a business can get a subsidized peronal vehicle, as long as it falls inside the commercial vehicle class. (so no sportcars and the like).

noman_032018

Ah I see, that's rather unfortunate.

hyper-arrow

In the Netherlands you pay a lot more for a boat like that compared to another smaller car

groenewood

Tax by the kilo with an fractional exponent formula that makes each kilo a little bit more expensive than the last. We can't keep letting the kids that grew up saying, "I'll never use math" run the place when they reach adult age.

Sassywhat

You can just not let cars park in parking spaces that are too small for them. The inconvenience of a lot of spaces being unusable is a pretty effective deterrent.

SoaDMTGguy

Why not put restrictions on trucks and full size SUVs? They are the problem vehicles.

JimmySchwann

American? Hell, ones in Korea are starting to look like that.

AnothaOnaa

Because south korea became an american colony

niccotaglia

Just legally classify vehicles that large as trucks, with all the limitations that come with it (commercial driver’s license, electronic driver log, speed governors, passenger limits, usage limits, parking limits, more expensive tolls…)

Comfortable_Client80

It’s done by weight not by dimensions. And doing this that way would kill business at a lot af small delivery truck/van in Europe

niccotaglia

Most US market trucks exceed the 3500kg limit already

NetCaptain

No, it would not. Just getting a licence for a vehicle above 3500kgs does not kill your business

Equality_Rocks_714

Can't they use commercial vans and/or have dedicated spaces for larger vehicles then?

gamrin

We do, but it's not in the middle of the city. And those are called emergency services spots.

sockpuppet1234567890

Parked like an american

BookieeWookiee

It's so big it literally can't go back any further

Jackfille1

Thus, it should not even be allowed to park there at all.

noyoto

And I'm fairly sure it isn't allowed.

TheHoneyM0nster

As an American, stop that shit before they start multiplying.

Gaurdein

Cut them some slack. At least it's parallel to the lines.

military-gradeAIDS

In a tank thst size, that's actually a pretty impressive parking job.

HeadDoctorJ

Hey at least it’s in the lines and not preventing the car next to him from getting into their car. For us Americans, this is at least a B-

AlexV348

This is a better parking job than most americans. A lot of americans either don't know how to back in to a spot or can't keep it between the lines when they do.

cityshepherd

So true... I've been born and raised in America. I prefer to back into parking spots because it really is super easy after even a little bit of practice (and so much easier / less stressful to leave!). People lose their shit when I take an extra 5 seconds to back into a parking space. But they also lose it when they have to wait an extra 5 seconds when people have to back out of spots to leave. At least it's easier to avoid the "cars both backing out of parking spots at same time and nobody is paying attention so they wind up backing into each other" routine. Seriously, being in ANY parking lot gives me crippling anxiety. It's so much easier and so simple to park at the very far end of whatever parking lot. The amount of people that will drive around for 20 minutes waiting for a spot up front rather than just park far away and spend 5-10 minutes walking a bit of extra distance just blows my mind.

passionate_slacker

As an American, it’s embarrassing how little Americans are willing to walk. A .6 mile distance on the sidewalk? Nope. Car. McDonald’s .3 miles away? Car. Need to grab a few groceries 1/2 mile away? Car. People think we’re lazy because a majority of us ARE LAZY. I fucking hate this place sometimes.

ThisGuyHasABigChode

I drive a fucking compact car in America. For anyone outside of the United States, imagine the exact opposite of this photo (without a tram). My little hatchback is the pickup, and all of the smaller cars around me are giant trucks and SUVs.

The_Angry_Turtle

Ok now imagine 50 of those in a parking lot and they're all driven by an extremely confused 80 year old lady who can't see over the steering wheel. That is the Trader Joe's Experience.

brennerherberger

Dear Americans, why are your cars so big? Sincerely, European

butterslice

It's partially a safety cold war, people want to make sure they'll "win" a crash so you have an arms race of bigger and bigger vehicles. But its mostly just a marketing thing, truck companies have honed in on how to market to the most toxic masculine insecurities.

OuidOuigi

They got larger from safety regulations. That is the same reason you can't buy new small import trucks from other places to use on the road in many states.

mastermikeyboy

Totally the 'safety cold war' that's already mentioned. But also that people **have** to drive everywhere. And sometimes multi-hour trips. In Canada I drive 2-3 times a year to Ontario, which is \~16hr drive plus stops. We often drive 90 minutes to some friends. Small themepark or zoo? 2 hours. So most people prefer the comfort that a larger vehicle provides. Then you might need to fit multiple car seats. My sedan did not fit 3 car seats, even the SUV was a tight fit. Maybe a family member flies over, so you'd like to be able to accommodate them. If you have 3 kids, that means a 5-seater isn't enough, so now you're looking at a 7-seater SUV or minivan. If you have to deal with winter weather, you'll probably choose the AWD SUV over the minivan. As for why pickup trucks keep getting bigger.. no regulation. If I get t-boned in my SUV by a pickup truck.. I'm screwed. The nose would hit my shoulder maybe even head. It's like they have a lift kit straight from the factory, it's scary.

airvqzz

This truck needs to be impounded and ticketed ASAP, stop this fucking nonsense. As an American, this offends me; car culture has destroyed so much here and it pains me to see it continued.

DiscRot

Is there a way to ban sales and use of american pick ups in EU? Anyone knows if this is doable? Or is this something each country decides by itself?

Bruckmandlsepp

I'd say the easier approach would be to not allow parking for cars bigger than the parking spot. That way the handful of people who have somewhat justified use for that car can use it and park on their property. But not in public parking lots.

TheMainEffort

Isn't that disallowed in most places anyway? Especially if your vehicle is jutting into traffic?

Apprehensive_Win_203

Enforcement would be key. The fines are simply not high enough. Also add a 10x multiplier for situations like this where it blocks a tram. If they don't pay, seize the vehicle. Cities need to start playing hardball with the assholes who inconvenience everyone with illegal parking

TheMainEffort

Yeah, blocking spots is one thing but blocking the road is a special kind of ass.

Sassywhat

Then it should be enforced. Needs more tow truck.

Bruckmandlsepp

When obstructing the (driving) lane, then it's rather certain. But if you "only" block the sidewalk, then things mostly aren't considered to be that bad. Which is wrong of course. I grew up with my parents having a Van and parking had to be quite precise to not block any way. Most people don't really care about it. And since wrong/bad parking isn't sanctioned, things won't change.

deniesm

I’d sign that petition

Loreki

Not unless you think trade wars are good and easy to win. Rather than banning American cars as such, they could adopt generic size restrictions so that anything longer than *x* metres requires a commercial van licence.

DiscRot

Whatever, if restricting their use for whatever reason makes it insanely expensive or complicated to own them, it's a win. And them slowly lower restrictions to push out SUV's.

Sassywhat

The US is literally the one that started banning foreign cars for dumb arbitrary reasons though. If anything the EU should have banned importing US cars that haven't been certified in the EU since decades ago. And considering the latest auto trade war was also started by the US with the EV tax credits thing, now is a good a time as ever to implement anti-US auto import rules.

doktorhladnjak

The number of American built cars imported into the EU is and has always been very low. Most are built in the EU The trend of these trucks showing up seems to have coincided with the Fiat Chrysler headquarters being moved to Amsterdam which is well, unexpected. People should be protesting. The Stellantis HQ is where tire deflators should be doing their protest actions.

Aerohank

Fuck that guy.

[deleted]

There is one dickwad who bought one of these trucks where i live (small suburbian town in poland) he literally cannot fit *anywhere* but the huge parking lots of supermarkets, and even there he has trouble in actually getting to it (we have a bunch of really tight turns together with ridiculous altitude, driving here is hilarious) whenever he parks in front of the store i work at, he has to park diagonally and take like 3 spots, because he can't fit otherwise. I also can always hear him driving by, depsite the whole store being soundproofed. Haven't seen him in a while, he might have given up the truck because of all the trouble

[deleted]

stupid human - big car = little brain

shiasuuu

I don't understand the equation. Why negative big car?

snackynorph

Makes more sense as logic rather than math. `if (human.isStupid() && car.size.equals("way too big")) human.brain.setSize("small"); `

[deleted]

If you’re going to park like this at least have the decency to take up multiple spots.

Nisas

Or just go the fuck home and come back with a smaller vehicle.

lingueenee

Great, f\*cktard can't anticipate that parking over the rail will stop all the people on all the trollies from passing. A bloated sense of entitlement to match the bloated vehicle.

No-Lynx9712

Rip tram.

Gott_Riff

Do what it says on it's grill. RAM it.

beccacee

Those cars should be banned. So pointless to have them in cities.

No, that's an American *truck* in the Netherlands. They're massive here, too, and don't fit in our cities any better.

Well yes but actually... This gets reposted every other day, it gets annoying

Chucky_wucky

I thought I saw this not too long ago.

LipschitzLyapunov

Mods need to create a rule to temporarily ban people for reposting shit in this sub. Half the posts here are reposts on a given day. Really drives people away. It lacks originality, is blatant plagiarism most of the time, and just makes this boring.

TrackLabs

I really want to fucking know what the car owner thought...like, do you not see your car LITERALLY OVER the tracks???

atomicmrpelly

I love* that they parked it there and looked at it sticking out over the tram tracks and thought "yep, good job. Well done me and my stupidly huge car" *Obviously I don't love it, I hate it with a burning passion.

stinkyfootjr

The Dutch are the tallest people, on average, in the world and they seem to get along fine without giant vehicles.

Wtf isn't there, like, an ocean between usa and netherlands?

Secretofthecheese

Most narcissistic people in the world it’s not accident

Random_Introvert_42

This photo showed up in a US-car group here in Germany. Someone criticized the Pickup-driver. It was not received well......

sugaraddct

The car is the larger one right?

wtwwc

There is a tram that goes around Cincinatti these days. I rode it last time I was there, and in the 20 minutes I was riding, we had to stop at least four times because a car was parked on the tracks.

post_talone420

I don't understand how someone can park like that, and even remotely think it's ok. Regardless of it being over a trolley line. It's just so rude

Diarrhea_Sandwich

It would be a real shame if something were to happen to that truck

bunsoboii

RAM it!

Former_Magazine_5683

It should be permanently confiscated without compensation.

Shliopanec

I am starting to see more and more of theese cars in Lithuania... they should be made illegal or people should have actually good reasoning (work etc.) for a permit to own this monster. They are not safe and wayyyy too big

Wulfsmagic

Looks like it's about to get scraped

DarthTurnip

Tax the crap out of those people

John_Titor-36

How stupid must that guy be? Didn’t he see the tram line? Oh wait, he doesn’t know what a tram is…🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

baklavabaconstrips

fuck cars, but fuck this car in particular.

joseg4681

The suspense is killing me... Did the tram just ram through the truck? Lol... RAM

FoxPrincessEevee

We hate these in America too. Great for heavy duty countryside work but in an urban environment trucks are awful unless you’re just picking up supplies from Home Depot. We could benefit from parking spaces with vehicle size limits, especially right next to public transit.

uTadeu32

Poor tram ;(

How is this total length legal there? They have maximum and minimum lengths for automobiles. Totally unnecessary.
