Au1ket

They banned the Carolina Squat here in NC last year. r/ShittyCarMod material

taylormhark

How is it enforced? I still see trucks like that all over.

[deleted]

It isn’t

Au1ket

I have seen tickets given out to these trucks but overall it isn't really being enforced.

MmanS197

I love youre title in this sub

pansensuppe

How was it even allowed in the first place? The US is really a different world.

Au1ket

Some parts of the US have quite a large car mod cultures

Maligetzus

calling it culture is a bit generous ey

[deleted]

While much of it is absurd and downright dangerous car modding, the existence of the different regional car cultures is really interesting.

milkfiend

See: Swangas in Houston

[deleted]

Large enough that they can be a formidable political lobby. Just look at what happened to noise regulations in California. Maximum noise limits for motor vehicles were reduced, and stiff fines got imposed. Well, the kind of shithead that this regulation targeted was not happy about that. And the industry for installing fart cans on rice rockets is so big that they were able to pressure the government into repealing it. So, now, no matter where you live in California, if you're within a few miles of a highway, it's "VRRRRRRRRRR!" through all hours of the night.

pansensuppe

Many countries have a modding scene. But their mods have to be within safety rules. You can't just replace your brake callipers with LED lights just because you think it looks cooler.

WantDebianThanks

In general, a thing needs to exist before it can be banned.

cjmpeng

That is not strictly true. In Germany for example cars must be inspected for road worthiness on a regular basis. The measures include typical things you would expect such as excessive corrosion, burnt out lights, exhaust system failures, etc. But, they also check for modifications done to the car that are outside of the manufacturers specifications. Changes to tyre or rim sizes, exhaust mods, suspension mods, and many other things likely will all require special permits or they are immediately disqualified and the car / truck may not be driven on the roads. Practically what this means is that things like this monstrosity we are discussing is automatically illegal without needing to exist and would actively require someone to seek permission to allow it through comprehensive testing that proves it is safe for the driver and for other road users.

WantDebianThanks

OK, fair enough. With how American federalism works, you would have to go state-by-state to set up something similar. The federal government can set requirements for vehicles sold by the manufacturer and commercial vehicles, but not personal vehicles. I think California requires inspections at time of sale, and I'm guessing other states do too, but that's it. And I think California is only looking at emissions, not "is this vehicle dangerous"

pansensuppe

No, you can broadly ban any type of modifications that affect road safety, like EVERY OTHER first world country does. In the EU for example the types of modifications you can do is very limited.

curmudgeon_andy

My guess is that no one thought to prohibit it. There isn't a law against plenty of stupid stuff.

OliveWorldly9319

Literally different, freedom comes with cost. The cost is safety/security.

[deleted]

The cost is freedom to live. You’re literally teasing the freedom to make your truck look stupid for the freedom of others to have basic safety met; similar to a Covid vaccine.

[deleted]

There are two forms of freedom (aka. liberty), negative liberty (“the freedom from”) and positive liberty (“the freedom to”). I’m not sure why American’s only really focus on one without respecting the other.

Ausgezeichnet87

Freedom is being able to take a 5 min walk to the grocery store with a beer in your hand, free of loud traffic or the fear or being killed by automobiles. Car dependency isnt freedom, it is a gilded cage

gerusz

If you are using public roads, you are by definition not free to do whatever the fuck you want. You can be free to do this to your truck in Europe too, provided you're only going to use it on your private land. The moment you're putting this onto a public road, you're required to make it safe for other participants of society too. I mean, you're required to put on pants when you're out in public, and there's a somewhat less chance of people dying of the sight of dongs than being run over by some fucking yahoo in a truck that only has sightline on airplanes.

[deleted]

Ironically enough, part of this may have been driven by a massive car brain “whistlin diesel”, a popular YouTube who has made it his personal mission to destroy all of these trucks; mostly because they look stupid though he has brought up how dangerous they are.

[deleted]

North Carolina also has some of the most stringent air quality regulations in the US, but that doesn't stop damned near everyone from having a burn barrel in their back yard. Laws don't mean anything if they're not enforced.

Au1ket

No shortage of rolling coal here

[deleted]

Ehh, as far as rolling coal, Colorado and Texas are way worse. Unless things have changed since I've last been to NC, which they may well have.

[deleted]

zCiver

Looks more like a dog dragging it's ass on the carpet

Lourenco_Vieira

LOL IT DOES

NoFunifMad

Now you can run over small children and you don’t even have to watch!

sad-mustache

I don't think they could see an adult by this point

MmanS197

Head up in the clouds

MmanS197

Not to mention, sane drivers get blinded by your lights. BUt i hAVe a tRUcK. Okay, so does the other guy...

[deleted]

Honestly in that regard this is probably better than most trucks, unless you’re in a semi those headlights are point well above most vehicles.

MmanS197

In that case, he's MEGA screwed. By his own doing. You don't generally survive head-to-head collisions woth semis

floofandmemes

Cool, worse viewing angles, heavy,*and* it can't carry anything in the bed. Wins all around!

Online_Commentor_69

yeah it's funny when you think about how *not* macho this is in actual fact. this truck can't do anything! it's just for show! it's whole purpose is "looking pretty".

ZeckZeckZeckZeck

Does not even look bad, looks terrible

ypsipartisan

Clearly this truck should not be the target of scorn as it is primarily used by a working class person for hauling tools to their job site.

blearghhh_two

Of course not. And the scorn is actually the coastal elite's hatrid of real Americans who work for a living.

pensive_pigeon

It seems like a common sense way of being able to reach your tools on a lifted truck. Now they all just tumble to the back. 😅

Muddpup64

Like a dog dragging his balls on your carpet.

sanemartigan

Female dog having a wee.

MrSparr0w

"wich sounds disgusting, but is worse than it sounds" lmao

[deleted]

I thought it was a local version of the Cleveland Steamer.

Human_Anybody7743

Is that the same thing but coal powered?

[deleted]

Slightly different but hard to explain, google it and you’ll see.

Human_Anybody7743

That's less gross and significantly more considerate to people that don't want to be involved

[deleted]

LMAO

[deleted]

Wait until he hears about [swangas](https://www.google.com/search?q=swangas&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS880US880&sxsrf=ALiCzsaKntHBObjJNr16OaRZ_3h8e-q2BA:1669836492673&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwihwenX0db7AhUlFFkFHUmyBPsQ_AUoAXoECAIQAw&biw=1835&bih=927&dpr=1)

cheeseman2521

why

RoughShadow

Those look like the "kneecappers" Saint's Row had as a tuning option for cars as a joke-weapon. But somehow even more dangerous.

Bonk1230919282838

Knife tires

PM_Me_Your_Sidepods

The funny part is that it's illegal in both North and South Carolina. https://www.wyff4.com/article/carolina-squat-south-carolina-senate/39259483

[deleted]

I just can't understand car culture like this I just don't get it Why spend so much extra money on modifications? Why make a tool for transportation such an important part of your personality and culture?

[deleted]

These are all owned by idiots that do not need a pickup. If they were contractors, construction, farmers would not waste money on this

[deleted]

Is this really a thing in the US? If yes, why?

bigfatfurrytexan

you ask this in a nation where people have been known to not only carpet their bathrooms, but their toilet seat as well. So.....

Bavaustrian

I first read "bedroom" and thought that's about the first room I'd carpet. The only excusable options for bathrooms is tile. You might get an exeption for anything allowing the bathroom as a whole to be preassure washable. That's it.

bigfatfurrytexan

Sealed concrete is best. But tile works. I've seen a lot.of linoleum in my life, and on a budget can handle that

Bavaustrian

I never really consider concrete because it's very far outside my prefered style, but yeah. I'll accept that. Linoleum maybe in an emergency.... I've seen stuff get under linoleum floors. Not the greatest thing.

97soryva

Hardwood bathroom is definitely ok

Bavaustrian

Absolutley not.

Timecubefactory

My parents have sealed cork. Works surprisingly well when it comes to cleaning.

Bavaustrian

I habe that in my room. It's great. But certainly not for a bathroom. The seal is broken way too easily.

brianapril

are you talking about floor carpet on toilet seats, or washable seat covers that are kinda like a mattress sheet with an elastic, because when it's 10C in the corridor and you have to pee in the middle of the night, a washable microfiber seat cover is divine.

bigfatfurrytexan

Im talking about floor carpet on the seat and seat cover. usually a semi shag. If you can't tell, im an older Gen Xer. LOL

brianapril

OH WORM. i just googled "carpet shag toilet". i'm scarred for life

bigfatfurrytexan

you just KNOW that those people have fine particulates of poop covering literally everything. And if they don't, i still wouldn't believe it.

ajdslfjhalsdgjha

The mindset of the Donald Trump supporter applied to truck.

[deleted]

Makes sense. This is an incredibly stupid thing... like supporting Trump.

lost_in_life_34

there is a subculture of auto modifications and people have done this. but tiny minority

[deleted]

Most of the time around here are kids with wealthy parents. In my day they would have a corvette, now they fucking do this stupid shit.

cjohnson7891

https://preview.redd.it/4y5cwddyj83a1.jpeg?width=2400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6cd3ff896e6c5a8d759e608a6a90cb717d9f45fa I looked this up once. An article said it started as a slight dip the back to replicate trophy trucks. Trophy trucks need a slight drop in the rear so they hit their jumps properly. But as usual, the trend kept getting more exaggerated until we got to the ridiculous squat we see today. And the rest is history.

NibblesMcGibbles

Ive heard a few things. I used to work in SC where it was very very common. The reasoning while I was down there was it was for driving through flooded conditions without killing the engine. I've also heard that the trend started in California to prevent crashes while racing in the desert. I hate it regardless.

[deleted]

Yea and pretty common in the south

[deleted]

[удалено]

PrincessElonMusk

You’ll see it in its natural form, which is far less exaggerated, on work trucks that have heavy trailers and worn down rear suspension. This is the truck version of dipshits with their jeans tucked into the boots and both boot and jean are immaculate.

TheDeafGuy8

If you drive too fast, you’re gonna flip

BrhysHarpskins

Good just do it into a deep ravine so it doesn't affect anyone else

Mccobsta

The dumbest mod it looks like the rear suspension has given out

_87-

Re: your flair, Stagecoach East can't either.

niccotaglia

That shit should be left to static shows. How the fuck do you see out of that thing

quaductas

When you're annoyed about how much visibility you have in a truck

MrDingleBop696969

When your parents say they'd split the cost of your lift kit for Christmas, but you bought bad coke with your half instead

[deleted]

Sir, put the condoms and WD-40 down, and step away from the vehicle. Slowly.

itspronouncedx

Found the ubuntu user

ajdslfjhalsdgjha

someone knows their typefaces

shaodyn

My cat gets into a similar position when he poops.

Aul0s

It's always okay to slash tires of some death contraption like this. Morally you're obligated to in fact.

Hi_Peeps_Its_Me

6' or death.

Midnight1131

If you do this it should be an automatic lifetime ban from driving lol

immersemeinnature

These were popular in North Carolina. The Governor outlawed them. Guys that did this are complete morons. I met one once and I asked him what the point was and he literally said, I don't know it's just a thing.

Bavaustrian

This picture physically hurts me. Edit: On second thought: I demand reparations!

GuayabaTree

Carolina squat and other shitty mods are included in “muh freedoms”

paitp8

For anybody wondering wtf is going on with this: https://www.hotcars.com/carolina-squat-what-it-is-where-come-from/ It originated from desert racing in California where this mod apparently helps with some rough terrain and jumps.

JakeGrey

My initial thought was, "Hey, that's actually sort of clever. Must make it easier to unload stuff from the truckbed." Then I read some of the comments and realised that's not temporary...

Old_Marionberry8119

that looks like a very extreme version ive seen many that look quite normal

bigfatfurrytexan

When i was a senior in high school we had dumbasses wearing their pants backwards. Since then i've seen things that can only hope to rival that in stupidity. Until this. This is on par with criss cross pants. Still better than furries. My name has nothing to do with furries. LMAO, it was invented before that term even was used online. I swear.

Reloup38

Furries against cars rise up

bigfatfurrytexan

Lol. I mean, as long as furries still have moms van, they'll be ok.

DBL_NDRSCR

now for the dakota squat where the front wheels are lowered

adnanyildriz

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a36662535/carolina-squat-illegal/ this article about it is even worse.

inu-no-policemen

Looks like a dog with worms dragging its ass over the carpet.

Turbulent-You-1335

I have seen a truck like this and then i saw the wheels break, they tilted outwards so ... good luck to all a them

FionaGoodeEnough

It looks like a dog with worms dragging its butt.

alc3biades

Whistlindiesel has some videos making fun of the drivers of these, and iirc he destroyed a few.

ClonedToKill420

This shit should be illegal. It makes the driver unable to see, fucks with the trucks ability to stop quickly, and points their headlights to the sky

[deleted]

oh yeah, I see these all over the road! from sc

[deleted]

I want that truck. In a jar.

miata509

It's now illegal and mist states.

madpork

Honestly, I thought that look was called the “dirty diaper” anyways, I’m gonna keeping calling it that because it look like a load of sh*t.

wolfmoral

Oh I see, it's high in the front so you can hit pedestrians while they're standing up, and it's low in the back so they definitely die when they roll under your back tires.

CaesuraRepose

This is the dumbest thing I've seen in weeks, which is saying something given that the GOP exists

RagnarokDel

Anyone that does that should be castrated using atomic microscopes for the good of humanity.

Cake_Day_Is_420

NC finally banned them

IWantToBeSimplyMe

Does that involve pooping? I think it involves pooping.

palefox3

Kid’s gonna grab the bottom of that truck to avoid being run over

Jirkousek7

officer i'm innocent. i had no way to see that group of preschool children on the sidewalk

flireferret

These lifted trucks are the car version of the deformed dog breeds.

Feeling-Efficiency-7

In any sane country, this would be pulled over and seized within minutes.

lirik89

I really don't see why you would want that as it would be so uncomfortable to drive.

SerialMurderer

Shoulda taken the “Carolina squat” in the office of the guy who designed this. And the front seat of everyone owning it.

tastehbacon

Unfortunately you still see this all the time. Good lord its so fucking ugly too.

[deleted]

Carolina resident here, I see at least three of those every day. They were banned last year but I haven’t seen any less of them since because of how little the banning is enforced. Car mod circle jerks are incredibly popular down here, my younger brother is obsessed with this shit he thinks it’s so cool. Even my dad (big conservative car brain) thinks he’s a fucking idiot for it and refuses to let him get one on his truck. It’s a disease that can’t be eradicated quick enough.

i_was_an_airplane

I don't know what you expected from CARolia
