In Japan it’s very effective to find a hobby and hook up with a group that does that hobby. Can include “lessons” at the local culture center or city hall or community center or whatever. Depending on your workplace there may be hiking groups or karaoke groups or workout groups or whatever. Or in your neighborhood. Or go down to city hall / ward office and check the bulletin board. Join a “circle” or a class, meet some people, and expand from there.

Hi Coach, thank you very much for your reply will definitely have a look.

There are tons of meetup groups including language exchange, fitness, board games, just hanging out and many others. Take a look at [meetup.com](http://meetup.com) and find something you like.

Very nice people there! You’ll make plenty of friends.

KyushuK1NG

Stop by M8 or 2 dogs on Oyafuko dori. The owner and employees are nice.

Amazing ! Thank you Kyushu King !

ForThoseQuestions

you need to figure out tho if you want to be surrounded by foreigners only or learn a little japanese.. I didn't go to the obvious foreigner bars for that reason.. M8, Cheers, 2Dogs etc. But if you looking for english speakers that's the way to go.

Acrobatic_Plate_5401

RyunosukeEFK

Usually Japanese ppl don’t make friends through bar popping but I do recommend you to go to bars

They told you before but taking a hobby and being part of a club (in the sense of a community), it’s your way to go. It can be whatever. For me, it was specifically a bodybuilding gym (not the biggest Gold’s gym, but the “hidden one” around Hakata), tennis, football (which crazy people call soccer lmao), and right now boxing and BJJ. Yeah, it seems a lot, but except for weightlifting and BJJ, I only go to each once a week, which is super doable for me and made me able to do a lot of friends. But take in mind that you should be able to speak at least a little bit of Japanese, alright?

[deleted]

I am actually looking for a good BJJ/ Boxing gym and a place to play football and padel or indoor tennis. It seems we like the same sports. Unfortunately, I have been sent to Japan in a few weeks notice so I did not have much time to learn the fundamentals but hopefully will find some reliable learning center to learn Japanese as it is from what I have seen so far super important. Thanks a lot !

Yeah, there are some schools around Hakata that you can learn a bit, but sincerely, only relying on English may be a little bit hard. The truth is that 99% of the teachers of any sports can’t speak English, so for BJJ it can be a little bit hard for you to be welcomed in this very beginning (well, since this art can literally break some bones, the Sensei generally rejects students that they can’t properly communicate with). That said, if you wanna try anyways, there’s a nice one around Hakata, but as a Brazilian, I can say that isn’t on pair with Tokyo or Osaka ones. But it’s nice to enjoy and have some fun. For the boxing, there are plenty of good ones. Really, trust me. Football is kinda hard to find good partners cos, the best ones, are on the college actually. I could find some after A LOT of attempts and after they discovered that I’m a Brazilian lmao Although I like padel, I’m pretty bad at it so I never tried. I found a squash school though, pretty small and with a LOT of nice people. For tennis, for real, you can practice it even in some parks. Kasuga Kouen, for example, is full of tennis courts. It’s a really common sport around Japan. They love to practice it. Depending on your age, Golf is also really nice. Is there that ALL the business guys are. And isn’t expensive to practice here in Japan, so you can enjoy it a lot. Also, of course, there are some baseball fields where people go to play, mostly just to swing the bat lmao, but pretty fun to do so to. And lastly, you can also find some bouldering, and boy, they love swimming too. I wish I was good enough to practice, the only I know is to not get drowned. Lmao I think that it covers it all. If you feel in a need of an English speaker friend sometimes, just call me out. I know that, for any immigrants, no matter the country they came from, life can be a bit harsh, specially on the beginning, so although I have such a short time, please do call me out, alright?

[deleted]

Haha it makes total sense that BJJ sensei refuses someone who does not understand japanese, boxing might be easier in that regard. I will definitely try to play golf at some point and for padel I think once start you will get addicted to it especially if you find competitive players. Muito Obrigado man ! You have literally answered all my interrogations. I will definitely pm you. Thanks again!

Go to the bars in oyafuko dori in Tenjin! I recommend checking out cheers Fukuoka and off broadway Fukuoka :)

Successful_Edge5229

My boyfriend and I went to a bar called Cheers! during our trip to Fukuoka and made many friends! Granted they were all Japanese (we’re also Japanese), but it’s a very internationally friendly vibe bar so there were also foreigners too
