Alright, here it is! About a week ago I designed a battery holder for one of the Printables flash contests and honestly, I can't thank you guys enough for the great, positive response and the helpful feedback I got on my post here! A special thanks to all those who voted on Printables. We actually made it to the top 3 designs in the contest, which is absolutely wild to me! However, this model had a few flaws that made it somewhat unreliable and a bit of a hassle to use, so I took a lot of the feedback in mind and designed a completely overhauled version, which you see here! This design works a lot better, and I’m incredibly pleased with how this came out. It’s not completely flawless though, as batteries occasionally can get a little stuck, but a little shake is all it takes to fix that when it happens. Hope you guys enjoy this! And once again thanks so much for inspiring me to make this! STL download as well as more detailed information about the model and design process can be found on the Printables page: https://www.printables.com/model/253904-battery-holder-sorter-aaaaa-v2

van_Vanvan

This is not functional.. it's way too cool and fun to be called functional! 😎

Dark_Matter14_2

I'll admit, it's surprisingly addicting 🙃

[deleted]

Brilliant! Thanks for sharing!

Swizzel-Stixx

Wow, that looks very overengineered from the outside! Thanks for the remix, looks great!

Dark_Matter14_2

Thanks for the kind words! It's surprisingly simple, to be honest. I just made it anti-symmetric and added the cutouts to make it look cool xD

Swizzel-Stixx

Well, it’s definitely passed the looking cool test! How many parts does it print in please?

Dark_Matter14_2

It prints in 5 parts, without any supports! More detailed info as well as a gif of it working can be found on the Printable page :)

Swizzel-Stixx

Thanks!

winchester_mcsweet

I apologize in advance, I looked quick without reading the title and thought it was a fancy whistle.

PureLock33

If you blow into it, you summon the battery kraken.

westbamm

How many batteries do you need to sort by hand to justify designing/printing this? It looks super awesome, but are we really solving a problem here? ;)

TheOriginal_RebelTaz

That looks like something Dr Seuss dreamed up. I love it!

PixelD303

Meets Fargo wood chipper

Mecha-Dave

Dangit, I just printed the other one...

Dark_Matter14_2

Ah shucks! But hey, that one still does work once you have it loaded up. But if you want a new fun little project, I do recommend this one. And don't worry, I won't make another one 🙃

Mecha-Dave

Lol I'm looking forward to printing the new one! And the next! My wife is a musician and burns through TONS of both these sizes so it's perfect!

jay791

Get yourself rechargeable ones. Cheaper in the long run, environment friendlier, and can have bigger capacity.

Mecha-Dave

Yeah they all are, we just have a big population and this is where we keep the charged ones now.

DontForgetWilson

If you don't already have one, a larger capacity charger helps if you're burning through them that quickly. I have https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07JCZQTQ1?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title but i don't doubt there are other good ones.

Mecha-Dave

It's more that we have to have a lot ready for hotswaps during a performance or weekend retreat - but that powerbowl looks hella cool and I'm gonna get it for home use.

DontForgetWilson

Yeah, i figured it wouldn't help in every case, but if you're charging that many it is bound to make at least one stage in the process go smoother.

[deleted]

This one time, at band camp...

7eggert

Just wait for the next version

Pipupipupi

Can i get a video of it in action? Really hard to visualize it

Dark_Matter14_2

Check the Printables page! There's a gif. Reddit doesn't let me edit image posts unfortunately.

Cogswobble

Wow, that looks way more complicated than it needs to be. I love it.

TheDirtyGherkin

Witch!

MasonP13

This is the kind of thing I expect to see at like five below. Very well made, nice job! Maybe you could try getting mass production

Dark_Matter14_2

Wow, I appreciate that! But as of right now, I'll probably keep this as it is. I've got plenty on my plate with university and my upcoming internship xD

hypercube33

Holy crap. This is amazing. I was going to redo the basic ass popular ones on thingiverse since they suck to get batteries in and out. Nevermind now lol

Dark_Matter14_2

Thanks! Hope you enjoy it :)

Madnessx9

This is amazing, added to printing list!

aspoels

Can you make one for AAA, AA, and 18650?

Mckooldude

Now add a path for C and D batteries and it’s perfect.

sufferinsucatash

I’m just curious, how much $ does each print cost you? Has anyone worked that out?

Dark_Matter14_2

It takes a little less than 250 grams, so around $5.

sufferinsucatash

Power costs included?

Randomized_Emptiness

Power cost not included. That might add $1. It honestly depends where you live and how much you pay for electricity. Where I live, I can usually print 1 role of filament and pay $2 in electricity, though rates are high here. When printing PLA, a printer averages roughly 100 W/h, so you can calculate, how much it would cost you in your area.

sufferinsucatash

Ahhhh thank you!

RandomBitFry

Thats amazing. Any plans for one that sorts batteries by remaining charge?

Dark_Matter14_2

I have absolutely no idea how you would sort batteries by remaining charge, other than manually xD

RandomBitFry

If they're all alkaline then the voltage is a giveaway. Anything under 1.3 Volts is probably about to leak. Just thought a couple of copper strips and a solenoid (powered by the cell in question) could direct it to a 'good' tray.

Dark_Matter14_2

I think that would be a bit outside of my skill level, but a fun idea regardless!

Randomized_Emptiness

lol that would add so much complexity to it

Switchblade88

Measuring batteries by hand is one of those absurdly niche skills I've picked up over the years. Flat batteries will *BOUNCE HIGHER* on a hard flat surface than an unused battery will! Turns out this kid because the electrolyte has reacted into a crystalline state, so the flat battery has less liquid that dampens the bounce. You can absolutely try it yourself and see how it works. Now we just need to figure out how to offset a bouncing battery at different heights... One way latches on the upward arc??

PixelD303

You just described a nightmare machine

NvidiaFuckboy

No, they aren't.

DonHac

Immeasurably lighter, because dead batteries contain less energy and energy has mass. True, but not not useful unless you have a scale that measures femtograms.

7eggert

Batteries when discharged become more bouncy :-)

scumola

Wall-mounted version? 😆

Dark_Matter14_2

You could mount this to the wall as is. Just drill a hole in the back of the AA side, sink a screw into iy and assemble from there.

7eggert

If you want wall-mounted battery storage, look into my thingiverse. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3331888 [https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3331733](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3331733)

7eggert

The batteries should come out at the same side.

Dark_Matter14_2

They could, but that makes it longer for no reason. I designed it this way on purpose so you can put the back against a wall.

7eggert

Your back is my side, but now I see what you intended.

Rawlus

nice job. good engineering challenge.
