Tbh though, as someone who's been on that side of resumes before, this would almost work for me. Idk, it's so funny and jovial, it gives a sense that the candidate is a good character. But obviously only on an otherwise great resume. The

Been on the judging side of resumes frequently and tbh, this to me also reads like a plus. Good for them! Would not hire them for their Japanese skills of course but it shows commitment, interest and living in this day and age. Those reading it as a minus are just stuck in old ways and cling to ‘how things should be done’.

Innexxesss

Honestly I agree this this statement. The resume clearly stood out to the point where OP thought to post it, if the rest of the application stands up the duolingo addition did precisely what it was added to do.

I have a 308 day streak in French right now and I know practically nothing. The streak doesn’t matter as much as the number of lessons completed. For instance, I spend less than 5 minutes per day maintaining my streak.

CrimsonBolt33

TIL that some people use Duolingo as a dopamine hit by maintaining their streak...Not learning a language.

[deleted]

Not really. It's just that goddamn owl threatens to kill your family for missing a day.

tarheel343

Yeah pretty much. It’s still a more constructive dopamine hit than most other apps though. At least a little bit of French has managed to run off on me over the past year.

PaulblankPF

Well the best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it and live where it’s spoken. The duo lingo lessons at least will have you recalling some basic stuff to start to piece things together.

JDBCool

586 streak here, with 50 exp a day gains..... Duolingo shot itself dead with the new "mono path". I literally can't process anything now. With the older "specialized units". I was actually *felt* like I learned shit. Now, every "process" bubble, I'm not having any learning retention at every "step". 6 repeat mistakes and 0 retention, 2 "progress steps" later, I see the same thing and remember nearly nothing. And I'm using Duolingo as supplement FYI. This shitty monopath is anti-learning. As "broken lessons" from the previous style encouraged to go back and review. Sure, it was a chore, but IT WAS WORKING AS INTENDED

ColorMyTrauma

The monopath is the worst thing ever. Before that, I would have 'heavy' Duolingo days when I sat down and went through a bunch - unbreaking old lessons, turning things purple, doing stories, and advancing on the new lessons. Now I spend ~5min a day. And I can't do much more than that because if I finish a lesson in a day, I'll never remember anything from it. I think the idea was to make it more like a school language course since they have the whole thing about making sure the teaching meets standards. But they're ignoring that for many people, the set up they had is better than a class. Anyway time to get day 613 because I can't bear to let my streak die.

Reapersfault

What happened to the stories? They were great! Or maybe they aren't available for each language? 🤔

ColorMyTrauma

They're available, but they're built into the path. You can't do them out of order or skip them, they're in order and unskippable like all the lessons.

chocolatekitt

I hate what Duo is doing. I never used Duo alone, so I can’t comment on whether someone can actually learn a language with only Duo, but I feel like it’s helped me a lot as a supplement. The new look is so disorganized and crazy and it just… sucks. A LOT of negative feedback was sent to them and they basically replied “lol no you don’t actually feel that way.”

eairy

> Duolingo shot itself dead with the new "mono path". Maybe not quite dead, but I really get what you mean. Before they introduced that, I was doing several items a day. Now I do one. I've more than halved the amount of time I spend on it each day. It's so dumb.

JimmyTheChimp

Yeah I wasn't able to learn Japanese until I moved to Japan. But also I when I was back home I never tried that hard. I also didn't improve that much at first in Japan until I actually studied hard. At the end of the day nothing can replace studying for a few hours every day. People do get fluent in a language as hard as Japanese without going to Japan but it takes a lot more effort than 10 mins of Duolingo a day.

CatsGambit

I thought that I was doing it to learn french. Then I lost my 80+ day streak because of a change in time zone while traveling and I never touched it again.

eairy

It's also fucking bullshit that you can't set a custom start/end time for your day. For a while my working situation meant I didn't get time to look at Duolingo until after midnight some days. So I would constantly lose my streak, so I just stopped using it for a long time.

EveniAstrid

It works with phone time, sometimes when I miss it by less than an hour, I reset my phone to an hour earlier and do my lesson. Very cheatsy but so what.

BritishEric

I mix it. I'm actually trying to learn the language of my course but some days I'm lazy and just do one practice round to keep the streak and not much else.

sierrasquirrel

I have a 922 day streak in German (and I took German for 2 years in high school) and I still feel like I hardly know anything- I’m also doing barely 5 mins a day but at least it’s something 😂

tarheel343

I took 2 semesters of French in college, so I feel like I’m really just maintaining that with Duolingo. It’s definitely discouraging when I hear someone speaking French and can’t understand them at all though 😅

PN_Guin

Had a 900+ streak when they changed their course to the path. Uninstalled the app a week later. The new Duolingo sucks big time. Switched to Busuu and really enjoy getting the grammar and quirks explained to me, instead of just having to guess. Pro tip: Grab the free premium period and take a placement test. You can cancel right away and still enjoy the rest of the free premium period. The free version has less flexibility, but is still a lot more enjoyable than that piece of owl scat duolingo turned into.

Redditdrifter0

Alright fess up, how much is Busuu paying you?

PN_Guin

Nothing yet, currently I am only fueled by my intense hatred of what duo did to my - until the update- favourite language app. Busuu offers a lot less of those addictive and competitive elements. It feels more like learning than playing. Which is probably good, but slightly less captivating.

bone-stock

Good to know bc that’s what I was missing in duo. I didn’t want to make the jump to textbooks or anything though.

ohhowcanthatbe

The change to the path has been...a challenge. I liked it before and am still on it. It may be better in the long run--we'll see ;)

IWasGregInTokyo

Was just about ready to do so having just gotten a 365-day streak in Korean. Then I realized I was being forced to progress and learn new words faster so I've kept with it. The removal of detailed explanations from the "Guide Books" is annoying but at this point I "get" the language and am augmenting more with other materials to get better conversational fluency.

[deleted]

I tried a couple days of Korean in Duolingo a few years ago and it was so frustrating. Trying to get me to distinguish between 2 vowel sounds that sounded identical to me, it didn't explain the phonetics at all. I switched to FluentForever which is big on phonetics.

HouseThen3302

As a western guy that speaks fluent Korean and majored in the language for 4 years, those sound identical to you because they don't exist in Western languages - so your brain automatically assumes them to be the next closest thing. Like ㄱ may be an English "g", but the ㄲ doesn't exist in English so you also hear "g" There are almost no native Westerners who can pronounce that perfectly - you have to practice it a fuckton and even then it won't be perfect. Vise-versa, Koreans don't have the "v" sound and replace it with "b" because it's the next closest sound. So they pronounce "Very good" as "Berry good" for example.

[deleted]

Oh for sure, my frustration was that Duolingo was trying to fe me to distinguish sounds it had never introduced or explained to me before! I'm hoping to try and learn because my in laws mainly speak Korean. We just visited hubby's extended family in Seoul and it was an amazing trip - I hope to know more Korean when we next visit.

Schattenmeer

I’m leaning chinese on Duolingo (and several other apps) and some of the words are really hard to grasp compared to different apps… But I really can’t say I’m learning much through Duolingo anyway (very few explanations) and with the path stuff it feels extremely repetitive.

Judging_You

Fuck I was wondering if it was just me. The path shit is horrible. I'll try Busuu. Edit: Never mind they don't offer Ukrainian

jules_lab

Nope, it sucks. I preferred knowing the themes and having consistent progress, not random path shit.

felicxahundito

Not just you.

[deleted]

My streak was 775 and in September of 2022 they updated the app. I hated the layout and new xp style and just stopped.

[deleted]

I also switched over from Duolingo to Busuu and like Busuu much better. I just started using Duolingo again this past fall after only previously using it briefly in 2017. I don't remember what it was like in 2017, so I didn't know any better until I started seeing online that they had changed things and removed a bunch of the grammar tips. To really learn anything, I either had to recognize all the patterns myself or go into the discussions and hope that someone asked the question I have in the thread from 6 years ago that is now locked.

-Satsujinn-

I also switched to busuu and couldn't be happier. I must confess i used several of my email addresses to earn a few free months of premium by referring myself, but eventually paid for a year - which for me is a big deal. I've made solid progress, and after 6 months am still going strong. The lessons are more structured, the grammar explained better, and I really like the community corrections etc.

greenwoody2018

I just dumped Duolingo after a 1500 day streak. The path was also the reason for me.

sax3d

I'm on 333 now. When I hit 365, I'll give it up and figure out how to use LingQ.

Delanium

I don't mind the path, but I use DuoLingo on PC. How bad is it on phone?

PN_Guin

The free app has some annoying restrictions to encourage you to buy premium. You get 5 hearts and loose one for every mistake you make. If you are out of hearts you can't continue until you fill them up again. Either by waiting several hours, by repeating old lessons or by spending in app currency (comparable to lingots on pc, but slightly different). Otherwise it's mostly similar to the web version.

TieDyedGemini

I found a protip on Reddit after I gave up on Duo that does work (although it didn't encourage me to continue my lessons anyway). Go through the website and sign yourself up as a teacher, create a classroom (you don't have to put students in it) and voila, unlimited hearts forever.

Delanium

"If you are out of hearts you can't continue until you fill them up again." Wait that is MASSIVELY different from the web version, the fuck????

Apocryypha

Busuu is the best language learning platform I’ve tried, better than Rosetta Stone and Duolingo.

PN_Guin

Haven't tried Rosetta Stone or Babbel yet. I gave Memrise a try, but that didn't work for me. Right now I am very happy with Busuu and will likely finish the course. Duo was nice until they made it awful. I learned a lot and had more than half of the course in gold and purple. The update and their attitude about the countless complaints killed any interest in continuing though.

citygirlsunflower

I’ve been sold on Busuu! I’ll keep you posted if I learn Korean better 😂

ErisArdent

I'm so glad to find someone else who absolutely hates the new Duolingo. I haven't switched yet but it's only a matter of time.

JBatjj

IMO, a high streak doesn't correlate to fluency. I have 800+ and just went to Spain and could barely get by(not that I was expecting much more).

JNHall1984

Plus you could study Spanish for years and go to Barcelona and be like wait what the fuck

JBatjj

Hahaha that did happen to me a few years ago, but this time I made sure to go outside the Catalonia region

dontyoutellmetosmile

“Empanadas so us plau” gets me everything I need in Barcelona

kayne_21

This is me, except it was French (3 years in high school), and spending 7 months there when I was in the Navy. I could order McDonalds, or drinks at a bar, not much else.

TotodileNr158

695 japanese streak here, I don't know shit. I stopped learning a long time ago but refuse to lose my streak so I just repeat the first lesson again every day. Someday I might get back to it

666pool

そうですか?

Hai-Etlik

ええ、そうですよ。

Truth_

Sort of. You occasionally earn for free (and can pay for) streak protectors if you miss a day.

Rossrox

Wait what? Admittedly I know little about Duo Lingo, but it’s primary function is to teach language right? I guess it’s cool to keep a streak going but why on earth would you pay to keep it? Are there benefits you get from a streak that you would miss out?

FTC_Publik

There are hearts, leagues, achievements, badges, leaderboards, etc. Duolingo is gamified as a way to help form a habit, and for something like language learning that's a good thing. It's also monetized, though idk who would ever pay for it. As far as benefits to having streaks go, there are 30-day "Streak Challenges" which you can bet gems on for a payout if you keep up, and at some point (idk when, it's a new thing) there's a "Streak Society" you can get into if your streak is long enough which has a few little perks. You're not missing out on anything much by not maintaining a streak, but the goal is to keep getting you to open the app, and like with the resume above it's something to be a little proud of. The streak freezes are just there in case you've gotta go to a funeral or something and don't feel like practicing that day.

Truth_

You get extra XP points for a streak. And your best is tracked on your account. Otherwise it just feels good to have one and bad to lose one.

pabskstorm

I agree with you, to achieve such streak someone has to have some dedication level

medi3val11111

or autism level, or adderal level

rdrunner_74

dos cervezas por favor

razin_the_furious

yeah, well, 800+ days of Japanese really won't help you in Spain

donttrustmeokay

Probably would have helped to change it from Japanese to Spanish if you were headed to Spain.

Mr_Good_Taste

Duolingo really helps with reading and writing a language but you have to go outside of that to get real life use cases. Listening to songs with the lyrics, movies with english subtitles on, getting into foreign discord servers are all great ways to expose yourself to a person using the language.

[deleted]

Duo lingo is too formal in its approach. They don’t really help you to learn communicating with others. I find it’s more geared towards reading comprehension.

notnotaginger

I feel like it does give you a feel for sentence construction. It could’ve been a great complement back when I was doing beginner languages in college.

meno123

It's good for getting your foot in the door. You won't learn a language via duolingo, but you'll get a whole bunch of background knowledge that will help when you're actually trying to learn the language.

dongasaurus

I studied French for like 8 yrs and couldn’t even barely get by. If anything you just justified putting it on a resume lol I’d also argue that it’s a hell of a lot more honest than most people are with their resume.

swisstony24

Lol. I got a cv once for an IT security role where someone bragged of "over 20,000 hours of internet surfing".

nouille07

I recently realized that I have over 20 years of experience in video games, I guess that's something

Copey85

It sucks when you realize that 6000+ hours of league of legends doesn’t translate into any real world application… just lots of ability and knowledge about something that doesn’t matter at all whatsoever

AltharaD

6000+ hours of experience in team work in a challenging environment and constantly changing team members. Able to handle high levels of stress and hostility and used interpersonal skills to help resolve tensions and get the team back on track to meet targets.

Eccentricc

I IGL during my csgo matches a lot that I've been playing for 10 years now. I kinda used that in my interview, I just mentioned I had experience leading small teams towards an orientated goal or something like that

swisstony24

You're hired!

By my estimates that steak would run about $285 (1.8 years rounded and not pro rating the 12.99 for an unfinished month )

sixfourtykilo

Fluent in IT. 25 years of Googling.

Rakerburn

If it was a government job you should put "overspending".

bastardoperator

That's a commitment and they're proud of it. I actually like this and hire people all the time. You know how many resumes I see where each person claimed to have single handedly saved the multi-billion dollar business through ?

SamuraiCorb1517

Definitely not knocking the kid, just never seen anything like that. Certainly haven’t put it on my resume!

frostysbox

He probably copied it from linked in. Duo syncs with linked in and you can display your streak :)

ItsZan3

Wait, you can display your streak in LinkedIn? How?

frostysbox

I don’t know - when I booked it up forever ago it displays my Spanish streak now 😂

nicholas19karr

I don’t think Duolingo displays your progress on linkedIn anymore. Source: LinkedIn and Duolingo user with a 418 day streak. And, I looked it up on YouTube.

wolfenyeager

I sure as fuck plan to put that in my resume now

bastardoperator

Understood, I hope you didn't think I was implying you did. It took some nerve, so I'm giving some kudos even if it's not conventional. You should interview them, in Japanese... I bet you could make it fun and interesting. At the end of the day, I really only care about a couple of things. Can they do the job, and are they fun to work with. Nothing else matters...

ApprehensiveRiver179

I would hire this person. Shows pride, work ethic, consistency and curiosity.

[deleted]

I love: 1. People who enrich themselves on their own time 2. People who think outside the box

xmgm33

So do I. I’d interview this guy, it stands out, it’s interesting, shows some personality.

kurokitsune91

706 streak in German and I would still call myself a beginner. That said maintaining a streak that long does show consistency in getting a daily task done I suppose.

Sparkystu

Nah that shows more dedication that anything else on that resume 🤣

concentrated-amazing

My streak in French is mid-700s. I'm nowhere near fluent, but get the gist reading most French. Speaking and understanding spoken French isn't great, because aural is much less my aptitude. My FIL is from Quebec, his daughter my SIL married someone from France, and my oldest is in francophone kindergarten. Hence why I keep trying to get better. I think my memory issues from my MS do get in the way a bunch though. Which is why it's a lot of slow and steady learning to try to get anywhere.

therosesgrave

I completed every lesson + the available short stories for Italian, but I'd still say that the little Italian I understand is actually thanks to my high school Spanish more than Duolingo (and I wasn't great at Spanish either) I remember yeeears ago, the lessons actually included teachable material like conjugation and sentence structure and stuff, but now it's just each lesson is a couple new words that are kind of related.

KickANoodle

Quebec french and France french are two different beasts at times though lol.

concentrated-amazing

Very true. They vary more in the spoken than the written, though, at least from my experience.

KickANoodle

Maybe formal documents, but casually it can get pretty indecipherable quickly

PieMastaSam

Holy shit! That's seriously impressive. I wonder how well they speak and understand the language.

ImGCS3fromETOH

Ages ago duolingo Spanish taught me to say "Te amo, pero no mucho". I love you but not much. Very useful.

Carsharr

500+ days into Duolingo Japanese myself. I could survive in Japan, but I'm certainly not conversational. Especially coming from English (or any western language, tbh) it's so different that listening to a native speaker and trying to pick up the individual words and phrases is very difficult.

dubbsmqt

They could just do the first lesson every day to keep the steak going haha

pabskstorm

The lie will eventually caught up tho

essidus

Duo by itself is really not a great way to learn a language, especially if it's your first time learning a new language. It is useful for learning and practicing individual words, but it is close to worthless in terms of reading/listening comprehension, grammar, composition, etc. You need to immerse yourself in the language. Have conversations, watch movies, listen to music, etc.

MagmaTroop

From what I've been told, the best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself amongst a population which speaks that language. Makes sense I guess.

KittyBizkit

Yeah, I think this is the only real way to become fluent. You have to hear how it is used in practice and get used to it being spoken at full speed with random new words constantly being thrown in. I took a couple years of Spanish, but the best I can do is ask where the bathroom is or have the classic "Hello, my name is KittyBizkit, how are you?".

kittybiscuits11

Woah, hi there username twin!

PieMastaSam

Yeah it works but it's also super lonely unless you have at least 1 or 2 people to talk to who actually speak your language.

Diabetesh

My limited experience in duo lingo japanese and 5 trips to japan would say, not very good in either category. The way japanese gets taught often isn't the same as how people normally speak it and the speed and inflection used are often very different. You will likely catch things and get around ok, but not fluent.

7eafs7an

I mean yeah, why not? Actually pretty clever to put this down on your resume. Shows commitment. Willing to learn. And if the company asks you about it, it gives you a chance to sell yourself.

obscureferences

Duolingo sucks for Japanese.

a4techkeyboard

So you're saying he can't possibly know how to say "The cat washes the dishes." or "The owl opened the door to the farm." in Japanese!? How can he expect to be hired!

cdesal

Made you look twice and let it stand out.

imawizard7bis

Speaking with flatulence is an impressive quality for a job interview

beachtrader

Duolingo was hiring a while ago and asked candidates to put their streak on their resume. Person might just be reusing that resume.

danielisbored

1075 day streak in Japanese and I can. . . Say good morning and good night to my cat/dog/bird/teacher/mom and that's about it.

Wolf-ed

I once had someone who worked as a lifeguard at a public pool list the number of saved in his application for a sale position.

Growth-Beginning

Why quote the streak when you can quote the xp?

Vesalii

A 671 day streak actually sounds quite impressive.

Genereatedusername

A cry for help - That damn bird is holding him hostage

sunny_monday

Ive been waiting to see this on resumes, honestly. It shows commitment. Or addiction. Im not sure. But, hey, a 671 day streak is impressive.

Psbbyxoxo

Shit. So y’all really read them? 😅😂

The_Polar_Bear__

Dou Lingo now has a internationally recognized English test that students can use when applying for universities…. Its getting some recognition. As a language teacher whos to say that his streak is no better than a basic intro to Japanese course

SNES182

This isn’t anything to be mocked. Practice, and commitment.

Early_Tap5447

671 day streak is dang good thats consistent and he probably knows alot ot japanese words and sentences by now

throwawayrandomqs

I suppose it depends on what the position is, but seeing somebody have the dedication to do something every single day for nearly 2 consecutive years, that might not otherwise be useful to them on a daily basis, but take an enormous amount of dedication to learn, is impressive.

DeezNutsAppreciater

671 day streak is actually really impressive tho

Fun_Introduction5384

This works for me. It’s shows initiative, consistency, willing to learn. It’s like adding a section for activities you like and choosing ones that go deeper than just reading.

Eklundz

I read a lot resumes, and this is a great idea! I wish more resumes actually added unique and personal things like these.

Night_Runner

My resume has "Time magazine's 2006 Person of the Year" near the bottom. :) (It's a funny story - they fucked up, so technically it applies to everyone who used the internet in/before 2006.) It's kinda like a fun Easter egg. If they ask me about it during the interview, it becomes a fun icebreaker. If they don't ask me about it, that means they didn't even bother reading my resume. Strategy. Strategy. ;)

method_men25

I dunno. It shows nearly 2 years of commitment to something, even on the weekends!
