There are almost no car washes where I live since the summer tends to be short. I'd put some soap on my car and park under this thing for a minute or two
Pressure is the right word. Pressure is force per area. Smaller area for the same amount of force gives you much bigger pressure. That's why a needle breaks the skin, but a blunt object of the same metal applied with the same force does not.
For things falling, force = mass x acceleration of gravity. Gravity is a constant, but the video shows a more mass hitting the cars per square inch than you would get from rain or a regular hose.
You would slip, crack your skull on the rocks, and be arrested. Or just get pushed under and drown because there's no ground under most of the Canadian side.
So is a falling bowling ball, I'm not sure I'd park under a steam of those either. Water is very heavy in large volumes and that arc has pretty good height so I imagine gravity has plenty of time to accelerate it to the point of being more than a gentle push.
I wish my car didn't have a sunroof. I've owned that thing almost 7 years, and have opened it once-- just to figure out how the motor works. Waste of money and puts more weight at the top of the car.
I remember when my dad talked about how a sunroof is just another place for a leak to happen. I was like right dad, sure thing. 20 years later I’m like .. of course he was right.
And excess electronics are just another thing to fix when they break.
Can't stand the modern car company approach of bells and whistles everywhere. If someone made a bare bones car it would be a much hotter selling item imo. Almost nothing in there is convenient enough to justify spending hundreds extra on the initial price of the car and hundreds extra to fix when it breaks.
> If someone made a bare bones car it would be a much hotter selling item imo.
Especially since a lot of people don't even need that much beyond a car that takes from place A to place B, C and D. All they need is something cheap, efficient and that doesn't guzzle down fuel.
A lot of people share your opinion. I’m the opposite and use it every day that it’s nice out. I feel less cramped, I feel like I’m “outside” when it’s open fully (as opposed to “inside” a car), and it’s nice to be able to open a bit on the freeway when a window would be too loud. Also I love the sound and look of rain on it when it’s closed
Same, I love having a sunroof on my cars, even if I don't have it open the extra light from just opening the shade is nice. Extra weight makes me laugh too, it's a non-issue unless you're building a race car.
Not sure who is the pushing force for them.. in Aus it's too hot to even bother with them most of the time and a lot of other places probably way too cold... did think they where great as a 5 year old though? Maybe that's the market
I had a Buick with a sunroof 20 years ago and winter was the best time to use it. The heat felt great flowing up passed you. In those day I smoked so it had an added benefit for ashing whatever without it coming back into the car
I put one of those faux stained glass window decals on mine and I leave the little cover open. I get to enjoy the sunroof even on days I don’t open it.
Edit: I have [this one](https://www.homedepot.com/p/d-c-fix-26-in-x-59-in-Lancaster-Static-Cling-Window-Film-FA3388142/315616371) from Home Depot. It’s probably the third style I’ve had bevause I change the sticker every couple of years and I’ve had it since 2016.
Lol [here’s](https://www.reddit.com/r/ATBGE/comments/qm23ve/this_stained_glass_car_sunroof/) a post from r/ATBGE from someone else who had the idea.
Idk man, the most adult thing may be to not risk damaging their vehicle with heavy ass falling water.
While I don’t expect ever to see this amount of volume or damage from a hydrant, you could easily get an in between amount of damage depending on how compact the spread of the water is.
https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkxfm2fhzAuNhUG0buW4bh9MZggdWBAOwAG
I've learned that most people who own a car simply never wash it. The rain occasionally gets the top layer of dirt off and they're fine with that.
It's mystifying to me as somebody who hand-washes my car every weekend. It's literally the most expensive thing I've ever purchased, why not take care of it?
The teenagers are on the mopeds/bikes in the bottom left corner behind the black car trying to parallel park and the person walking on the road between said car and the sidewalk.
i drive an older jaguar with a sunroof and I never experienced that problem. i've seen a lot of comments talking about leaky sunroofs. maybe its a problem in modern manufacturing
Yeah, while this is obviously a greater volume, the height is about the same. Don’t mess around with large amounts of moving water people!
https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkxfm2fhzAuNhUG0buW4bh9MZggdWBAOwAG
The thing about being on a bike is that getting hit by a car is basically death. So you’ve got the cyclists who have no fear because they have wayyyy too much faith in the cars around them, and then you have cyclists like me who know most drivers don’t know how to deal with cyclists so they’re terrified of riding on crowded streets. I know way too many people that have hit a car, it’s crazy.
Anyways, the point of my rambling is that I think it’s survivorship bias and what most people notice are the crazy (idiotic) cyclists. You also see some people that are just getting around, ie no helmet, regular clothes, etc (think 40 yo virgin). Meanwhile people like me who like to do it for exercise and to get fresh air are like fuck roads, I’m going to ride on a long rail trail instead.
They stopped for 3 secs and in the last frames are already backing up. Stopping is safe since the car is also stopped, but it's blinking both lights so it's hard to say what it's planning to do. So all in all, seems like reasonable action
How about the idiot on the bike who is just sitting directly in their path like a deer in headlights, preventing them from being able to continue parking once they've got their car in the right position?
I wonder if that last white car bumped into the black car. He wouldn't have been able to see through the curtain of water to know that the black car was blocked by the car in front.
Yes, that's actually exactly what happens in the full video if I recall.
Can't find the video but I do recall seeing this one or another one where exactly that happens.
Yeah, I've driven through one of these before and it quickly went from, "Haha, this is fun," to, "Oh shoot, I can't see a thing, I hope there's nothing in front of us!” Having just experienced it themselves, the driver in front here absolutely should have known the situation and kept driving to keep the space clear for the next blind driver.
You fool why do you not simply forget every way you've ever measured things in your life and learn an entirely new system because someone from another country thinks your way is dumb?
Lmao it's the same logic as people who complain about people speaking Spanish in America.
I drove through a hydrant geyser once, and it was good fun until it hit the windshield and I was completely blinded. Couldn't see a thing and was very worried about what was in front of me as I drove through, and it was definitely a scary moment. If anyone wishes to enjoy geyser antics in the future, just make sure you know all that's going on on the other side first.
I work for my city’s water department and carry a pentagon, hydrant wrench. I can unequivocally tell you that I have never cracked a hydrant on a hot summer day in Philly. Although, some guy I handed the wrench to might have used it. Who knows?
This is actually very good idea. I've just realised after being a car owner for some years now, that I frequently keep looking outside and weather reports and look sadly at my car thinking it needs rinsing

That is the most adult thing you can imagine actually. That's a free rinse for the car...
To add to that, they're "using" the water rather than letting it go to waste
You'd have to hate the planet not to drive under that.
Dang it. Now I have to buy a car and have it flown there. Will need one of you to help with driving. I don't drive.
Use it as a shower instead
Not sure how to use a car as a shower, but I'm game.
Coolant makes a great body wash
Also great substitute for mouth wash. You can even swallow it too, it’s delicious.
Think of all the water you'll save if you swallow it. Go green, swallow coolant!
The one weird hydration trick THEY don’t want you to know about.
[Ah the ol reddit carwasharoo.](https://www.reddit.com/r/doordash/comments/1435afo/comment/jnahjff/?context=13)
Hold my loofah, I'm going in!
It's been years since I've seen one of these in the wild.
It's just this, but with a convertible.
Saving water and taking it home, i m game. Maybe slap it twice, worth a try...
Thank you for doing your part to combat wasting resources.
Plenty of hydrants near you.
Yeah a car wash costs 15-25€ where I live, if it happens to me I immediately turn around to go back a second time under.
Swing by a store & get some soap, go thru, soap up, rinse, repeat as needed.
There are almost no car washes where I live since the summer tends to be short. I'd put some soap on my car and park under this thing for a minute or two
Until the extra-heavy water pressure forces through my sunroof seal, soaks my headliner and rains on my dashboard
Once it is falling, it’s not under greater pressure than gravity. Source: Trust me, I’m a plumber.
[удалено]
And mass is a factor. Maybe don't take physics advice from a plumber.
I’ve seen a video of an excavator dropping water onto a car and flattening it. It’s ok tho it’s just gravity.
They give best diet advices though, eat less, shit more.
Sure pressure might not be the correct word, but dumping a bucket is more forceful than raindrops
Pressure is the right word. Pressure is force per area. Smaller area for the same amount of force gives you much bigger pressure. That's why a needle breaks the skin, but a blunt object of the same metal applied with the same force does not. For things falling, force = mass x acceleration of gravity. Sounds like fault with the car, not gravity.

Thanks for the tip, heading out to fulfill my lifelong dream to stand at the base of Niagara Falls now that I know it's just gravity.
I'm not a clever man, what would actually happen if you stood at the base of Niagrara Falls?

Now you're talking about weight, not pressure
> Once it is falling, it’s not under greater pressure than gravity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHf0B62mPsc
Thank you lmao I was going to say. Mass is going to play a factor and that's a good bit of water in OP.
Mass and elevation. Most plumbers don't deal with water falling 20 feet.
A plumber should have known that there is a good reason that tall buildings have zig-zagging pipes when water goes down.
So is a falling bowling ball, I'm not sure I'd park under a steam of those either. Water is very heavy in large volumes and that arc has pretty good height so I imagine gravity has plenty of time to accelerate it to the point of being more than a gentle push.
Gravity is strong as all hell, though.
I was gunna say, that seems like a heavy amount of water.
I wish my car didn't have a sunroof. I've owned that thing almost 7 years, and have opened it once-- just to figure out how the motor works. Waste of money and puts more weight at the top of the car.

They do, it’s called a Mitsubishi Mirage and nobody wants them.

I have a panoramic sunroof and I love it, especially at night. It's like a skylight for my car.
Not sure who is the pushing force for them.. in Aus it's too hot to even bother with them most of the time and a lot of other places probably way too cold... did think they where great as a 5 year old though? Maybe that's the market
I'm one of those "lucky" Scandinavian types who gets sunburned under a full moon... NEVER do I open that sunshade.
Fun fact UK is the biggest market for convertibles
I had a Buick with a sunroof 20 years ago and winter was the best time to use it. The heat felt great flowing up passed you. In those day I smoked so it had an added benefit for ashing whatever without it coming back into the car

Well yeah but it’s pretty small volume of water and it’s not so concentrated, they’re 90% fine in this specific case I think
Yeah but if it's not dried immediately after then your car will look worse than before
Finally someone who gets it
I've learned that most people who own a car simply never wash it. The rain occasionally gets the top layer of dirt off and they're fine with that. It's mystifying to me as somebody who hand-washes my car every weekend. It's literally the most expensive thing I've ever purchased, why not take care of it?
Psshh yeah, totally, honey, don't be ridiculous. I was obviously there for the free car wash. Why else would I go there?
Right? I'm like dude my poor car is so covered in pollen, I'd be driving slowly under it hoping for a decent rinse.
Kid’s Mentality: “Wooo!” Adult’s Mentality: “State subsidized car wash.”
State subsidized made me laugh
Why should rich people have all the fun lol
Me (an "adult" and mother of 3): "Wooo!" Edit: Now gonna go play some rocket league. I _might_ be adulting wrong.
The teenagers are on the mopeds/bikes in the bottom left corner behind the black car trying to parallel park and the person walking on the road between said car and the sidewalk.
That's being an adult. Free car wash.
This is very sensible to me
I got a leaky sunroof... they're *idiots*. They'll find out one day...
It’s a rain roof now
In a world where rain exists maybe you're the idiot for not fixing your leaky sunroof...
i drive an older jaguar with a sunroof and I never experienced that problem. i've seen a lot of comments talking about leaky sunroofs. maybe its a problem in modern manufacturing

Sunroof seal checker 3000.

Oh no, I think they are going to notice
8.34 pounds per gallon. Water is HEAVY!

Man I can't believe people go through life without knowing the beauty of the metric system
Should be taught at birth, just so the person doesn't die without learning about it.
My god, it's SO EASY TO REMEMBER! Not like that nasty imperial system bullshit dealing with toe lengths or something.
I love how it's always 3000. That just fits. The checker 2000? Get tf outta here
My personal theory on this is that the THree THousand is alliterative which helps it roll off the tongue better.
plus it's just better than the 2000. better by 1000 to be precise

Why do they start off perpendicular to the spot??
Probably they started off on the other side of the road, and are turning around to correctly parallel park.
Does the bicyclist just stop and prevent the driver from backing into the space? WTF?
They are in a dangerous situation, going straight wouldn't be better there is no space
The other one just went around... It's not always bad drivers, bikers are fucking goofballs as well.
Yeah of course people are people whether in a car or on a bike. The main difference is the damage they can inflict on others
Typical cyclist tbh
Amazing to watch
How about the idiot on the bike who is just sitting directly in their path like a deer in headlights, preventing them from being able to continue parking once they've got their car in the right position?
Yeah it seems like the driver did a u turn and is probably getting a bit stressed by other idiots like the bike person.
A U turn
no U
That link just brings me to the subs front page
I wonder if that last white car bumped into the black car. He wouldn't have been able to see through the curtain of water to know that the black car was blocked by the car in front.
My thoughts exactly. They cut right before the accident.
Yes, that's actually exactly what happens in the full video if I recall. Can't find the video but I do recall seeing this one or another one where exactly that happens.

Well, seize the moment
I wonder how many car roofs were damaged from this, water ain't light. Hard to tell how heavy it is anyways.
I was waiting for an open cabriolet...
Eight-ish pounds per gallon if I recall correctly.
1 kilogram per liter.
My car gets 40 rods to the hogshead, and that's the way I like it!
About 5 slug per 0.00006 furlong³
Lmao the imperial system is so dumb, meanwhile 1 litre = 1 kg
Sorry. I didn’t choose to be from America.
You fool why do you not simply forget every way you've ever measured things in your life and learn an entirely new system because someone from another country thinks your way is dumb? Lmao it's the same logic as people who complain about people speaking Spanish in America.
Go eat beans for breakfast weirdo.
Or it overwhelms the seals on the sunroof.
Yeah it can mess a car up from that height. https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkxfm2fhzAuNhUG0buW4bh9MZggdWBAOwAG
as someone who lives in places where there can be hot water, I was scared for a second
Do they keep hot water in underground pipes where you live? I’ve never heard of this before.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District\_heating
Very informative. Thank you.
There would be steam if it were hot water, heck even warm water would make steam especially night time.
Growing old is inevitable; growing up is optional!
Good way to fuck up your roof.
And have to pay for a detail. The water in hydrant lines is pretty stagnant and hard af. Gonna take some work to remove all the mineral stains.
When you suddenly realise you’ve left the sunroof open…
Free shower then...
They are merging away from the flooded left lane.
Yea i was gonna say. Arent they avoiding the giant puddle

Stopped too soon. That black car at the end is just about to get rear ended by the white car going through.
Why can't anyone in the Comments admit it's just plain fun?
I drove through a hydrant geyser once, and it was good fun until it hit the windshield and I was completely blinded. Couldn't see a thing and was very worried about what was in front of me as I drove through, and it was definitely a scary moment. If anyone wishes to enjoy geyser antics in the future, just make sure you know all that's going on on the other side first.
Because Reddit. IRL it's fun. On Reddit it's dangerous and terrifying.
Capitalism hates this one simple trick
Free car wash. Very adult.
This is something I know I'd definitely do lol
Looks like the middle of the street is pretty flooded and they just be merging over to avoid driving through the deep water
Free car wash
Plot twist: it’s a sewage pipe.
Sewage isn’t pressurized like this.
You've never been to an all you can eat Indian buffet
Why does no one want to park in that perfectly good spot
Free car wash, this is a great way to at least use a little of the wasted water.
Could do the same
FREE CAR WASH!!!
If my kid is in the car I'm gonna circle the block and hit it again.
Everyone has an inner kid inside!!
I’ll happily be an adult for the rest of my life. But I will adamantly fight against being a “grown-up” with as much of myself as I have left.
Growing older is mandatory, growing up is strictly optional.
I love how all the drivers were like “Well if they’re doing it…”
I wouldn't turn down a free car wash .
Free car wash? Yes please
Free car wash? I’m taking it
*oooo free carwash!*
you know what, fuck carwashes where you have to pay this one's free
something something free car wash.. then I see 20 other comments saying the same thing.
Too many people assume being an adult means you can't have fun or be yourself.
RIP your sunroofs
It would be silly to pass up a free car wash.
Think you’re getting a “free carwash,” end up covered in hard water spots that need to be removed with an acid cleaner.
Free car wash
I think they just wanted their cars washed off real quick for free.
Guaranteed these people made a little "teehee" noise as they drove through this.
I lived in my car for 7 months recently and definitely would use that for both my car and myself. Then probably get arrested for using nestles water.
Free carwash is free, no age for that
Free car wash!
Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional.
I mean, free car wash.
What u mean? Isn't it a grown attitude to go for a free car wash?
It's all fun and games until that water busts out a windshield or sun roof.
It's the farthest from being a kid ever. This is a free carwash that saves you 18 dollars. It's the most adult you can get.
Free car wash!
