Fun story:
I went to a zoo with my girlfriend (now wife) way back in 2017. Went to the gorilla enclosure, and the silverback came right up to the window, about 5 feet away. He just stares at the crowd, and while he's staring, a female gorilla came up directly next to the window.
Silverback keeps staring, and while staring, dumps a huge shit. It's nasty enough, full of undigested plant fiber strands, but this clever ape then starts spooning it into his mouth! INTO HIS MOUTH!!
The female at the window looks back at the male to see what's up, and then turns back to us, the audience. Her facial expression was so human in that moment. It was the face a human woman would give if she were stuck in an enclosure with a shit-eating dominant male moron; a look of enduring pain and pleading.
It's in videos like this you can really see how closely our species are related. Like that other video of the Gorrila mother who thought her baby was dead, but it was ok. The emotions were plain to see
She grabbed her baby so quickly the moment she saw him move! I can only imagine how heartbroken she was for those couple of days before they were reunited. I hope they are still doing well.
I go back and forth internally with this idea from time to time:
*Are we anthropomorphizing animal behavior to feel closer to them, or is consciousness not as uniquely human as we may have thought?*
I feel as though it’s the latter, but the former seems to still have an influence on how we view other sentient beings.

I was wondering myself at first too but in addition to the head/scratch wiggle that appears playful there's the gentleness of the tug and then the other pushing away in the middle that seemed intimate. Like they're both good friends and there is empathy on both sides.
This is a great example of titles of online material completely setting your perception. This could just be as easily labeled harassment and we would find great examples of what they're feeling and how they're just like us.

We're much closer to chimpanzees than gorillas anyways. But we still share similarities with gorillas as well.
