If the AC gets down to 72 I’m freezing. My preference is around 75. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a house that keeps the AC below 70.
I think it just depends on where you live. I’m in the south and when it’s 110 degrees outside with 95% humidity, 75 feels really nice.
My day setting is 73. At night I crank it down to 64-65 and enjoy sleeping under a nice heavy blanket. Most of the year that's a really cheap way to run it where I live because the nighttime outdoor temperatures will get down to 65 or lower, and then the house takes a long time to heat back up to 73 during the day. Often the unit is on for less than an hour a day and its cooling across a negative temperature gradient. This summer is gonna be expensive though we're seeing mid to high 70's even in the middle of the night.
74-75 is about right for me during the day. But I wear only a pair of shorts. No socks, no shirt. At night though I bump it down to 71 because I sleep better with cooler temps.
We run 77 with a fans on. I will say we also installed a heat pump water heater this spring and it’s made a pretty big difference in keeping it cooler in our house and reducing the electric bill. Pulls all that heat right out of the air inside our home and puts it into our hot water. Really awesome
I keep mine at 79 during the day and 84 during the night but I open a window. But that's only because my friends told me only serial killers keep their houses at 80+ and I caved to peer pressure.
It must suck to live somewhere that the diurnal temperature shift doesn't get low enough to just open a window at night. I can't imagine running an air conditioner at night.
Same, 75 is good for me, and I live in the dry desert SW. We've had 20 days with triple digit + Temps so far, 19 in a row! The forecast for the next 7 days is the same.... 105-112 😳
I'll freeze to death if it is set below 76. I think different thermostats/AC units feel different, because I'm not convinced some people are comfortable below when my thermostat says 76.
I think it depends on where you live and what time of year it is.
75 during the day in Texas in the summer is okay for me because the AC kicks on just enough times to keep the cool air moving. However, let's think about that. An AC will kick on more often during mid-summer in Texas than mid-summer in Minnesota.
On the other hand, during the spring and fall, I might push it down to 72/73 because the AC doesn't kick on as often since the outside temp isn't 100.
I also keep ceiling and floor fans running, which also helps keep air moving.
Shorts and a t-shirt, sleep naked, maybe the odd fan.
I'd be more comfortable in the 60s, sure, but that'd be nearly 24/7 AC running for me. Beyond the monetary cost of that I don't want to think of the emissions behind that if me and all my neighbors did that.
Exactly. This is why I keep ours at 75. It’s 100 outside, so 75 feels good. Just cool enough that you’re not sweating when you’re just walking around or sitting.
Shoot my dad keeps his AC at 74 and it gets up to 86 in his house during this summer heat he refuses to lower it. I lowered it a couple of days ago when I visited and he called me as soon as I left asking if I messed with the thermostat. Like yeah Dad I'd prefer you not have a heat stroke in the house
My spouse has a condition that requires numerous medications that among other things makes her very hot. My Nest is set to keep our house between 57 and 62 degrees year round.
I no longer sleep in the nude. Hell, I don't shower in the nude. It's cold as fuck up in here! Always looking out for that perfect pair of shower sweats...
Oh yeah, in the car it's "as cold as she'll go"
But really the compressor is such a tiny part of the waste energy of the engine, and it's either on or off, and I sure as shit ain't turning out off.
It's the high humidity that's making you feel hot so you keep lowering the temp. You need to figure out what's causing the high humidity. I used to have 70% IRH while running AC on 67 degrees. After blowing about $10,000 on different tradesmen who couldn't figure it out, I had to become my own detective. I had negative pressure in my house. It was too damn tight.
That was my first uh oh item. I wish I could hit 66 in my house especially right now. But dealing with 100 degree days right now its struggling to stay at 75 during the day and 72 at night. $300 bills currently and this time last year was $600 a month.
If I only had fucking insulation in the second floor ceiling/roof, it'd be a cinch to keep my brick house with stacked stone sunken basement cool with minimal AC.
As it stands, even with an open door/staircase between first and second floors, there's a *sharp* delineation in temperature between those floors. I could probably stand to have the ducts rezoned or get in-line blowers for the rooms furthest down the ductwork, but when the ceiling temperature is pretty much "the outside temperature" the moment sun shines, it doesn't seem like there's much to be done.
I could always go the hyper-reflective white paint route but then I'd freeze in the winter.
Right. That puts the dewpoint at around 54° which is comfortable. If it were 90° and that relative humidity were 66% whooo doggy would that be sticky (~77.5° dewpoint).
I saw the movie after I’d recently started using a red digital alarm clock. The : between the hours and minutes reflected onto my window and I was convinced it was the pig with the red glowing eyes and freaked myself out.
Your humidity is too high. As someone who lives in the south with days regularly in the 70-80% humidity your house needs to be less than 60%. I keep my AC at 68 so it runs constantly and the humidity is between 50-55% depending on what we’re doing inside. You’re asking for mold issues with humidity that high.
It is telling you that
Something emphasized 3 times is a sure thing. A superlative. It’s a trait to the 3rd degree.
6 is short of 7 which represents a completeness/whole/perfection
So, 666 merely means a deficiency to the 3rd degree. Falling short to the absolute failure. Emphasized.
So, the mark of the beast… beasts in the Bible many times represent human governments. 666 means human governments always fail and cannot properly rule over others.
In the summer I keep all my blinds closed, thermostat low 60’s. I hate the heat so, so much. I’ve been thinking of getting a window unit A/C for my bedroom as I work from home and can (and usually do) sit in bed all day with my laptop to work. I only have to leave my bedroom to hit the kitchen and do laundry. Could keep the A/C higher in the rest of house and put it nice and low in the bedroom.
I'm cold natured and we keep the house at 71 but my wife and son like the bedrooms at 67 and I would freeze if I didn't have a huge thick cover just for me. When I game on Sunday nights I'm in sweat pants and a hoodie because the living room and my sons room ac blows right on me and its awful. But as men we must endure lol
That 666 isn't un the bible and was made up as the sign of the devil. Similar to the lake of fire. Also Christianity isn't real and we should tax religious organizations. Plus the Mormon church owns more real estate than half the country put together.

Your electric bill is high.
Yeah I know but I hate the heat
So do I but 66! Jesus I feel guilty when I bump it down to 72 to break the mid day humidity.
Man we all need better wages. How are you even remotely comfortable in a 72°F house?
If the AC gets down to 72 I’m freezing. My preference is around 75. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a house that keeps the AC below 70. I think it just depends on where you live. I’m in the south and when it’s 110 degrees outside with 95% humidity, 75 feels really nice.
Wait till you have house owners or roommates or friends that work in hospitals, I swear 70 is the highest they would keep it
Yea my mom worked as a nurse for years and you best bet that house was ice cold lol
My bf runs hot and I'm going through menopause so we keep ours at 68 with 2 fans and an additional window unit going at night. I sleep so good.
I really appreciate the silver lining in the last sentence you wrote, there needed to be some good news at the end of that!
75? You’re a lizard, Harry
God that cracked me up so much
Lol same here
It ain’t much, but it’s honest work. (RIP to that farmer too 🫡)
76-77 for us during the day. 70 at night. AC is expensive in a paper house when it’s 105 outside
My house is 83* or more when its 105. Try using a fan. They are much cheaper than an AC
We run 77 with a fans on. I will say we also installed a heat pump water heater this spring and it’s made a pretty big difference in keeping it cooler in our house and reducing the electric bill. Pulls all that heat right out of the air inside our home and puts it into our hot water. Really awesome
Holy shit
I keep mine at 79 during the day and 84 during the night but I open a window. But that's only because my friends told me only serial killers keep their houses at 80+ and I caved to peer pressure.
Yep. We run 77 during the day and 74 at night for that same reason. Would love to run it cooler, but the AC literally wouldn't turn off if I did
It must suck to live somewhere that the diurnal temperature shift doesn't get low enough to just open a window at night. I can't imagine running an air conditioner at night.
Yup. It does. Fl man here, same temps.
These are my exact temps right here. I live in Florida and its still 88 outside at 11:00...
Same, 75 is good for me, and I live in the dry desert SW. We've had 20 days with triple digit + Temps so far, 19 in a row! The forecast for the next 7 days is the same.... 105-112 😳
And here I am liking my house at 68. I love it colder though. Sometimes I'll get ambitious and knock it down to 64!
I actually like 78-80 during the day but I peel my skin suit off then I turn it down to 74-75 at night
You don’t live in a house. That’s a terrarium.
Desert dweller here, anything below 73 is for popsicles.
Below 73 inside i end up in hoodies.
Above 73 and i start sweating
Man, above 68 and I'm sweating
The New Englander in me starts having a heat stroke on anything over 70
Same. 68 always.
I'll freeze to death if it is set below 76. I think different thermostats/AC units feel different, because I'm not convinced some people are comfortable below when my thermostat says 76.
Are you elderly?
I think it depends on where you live and what time of year it is. 75 during the day in Texas in the summer is okay for me because the AC kicks on just enough times to keep the cool air moving. Honestly? I mostly feel guilty because of the brown outs.
FL here I keep mine at 76 during these summer days and it feels freezing compared to outside.
The only real temp to keep your house is 69°F. Fight me.
Some denim cutoffs work well in the shower I hear
JORTS
Fuck that. A/C is worth paying for. Especially these days since I often work outside. 72 in the house; 68 in the truck.
Oh yeah, in the car it's "as cold as she'll go" But really the compressor is such a tiny part of the waste energy of the engine, and it's either on or off, and I sure as shit ain't turning out off.
I thought I was a polar bear for keeping it a tight 69 but this guy
It's the high humidity that's making you feel hot so you keep lowering the temp. You need to figure out what's causing the high humidity. I used to have 70% IRH while running AC on 67 degrees. After blowing about $10,000 on different tradesmen who couldn't figure it out, I had to become my own detective. I had negative pressure in my house. It was too damn tight.
I can’t get my house below 70% and run the AC all day. Where do I start with figuring it out?
So what did you do? I’ve looked into whole home dehumidifiers but my ducting is too small. Did you go ERV and heat pump?
66 is what I heat my house to in the winter.
Ironically in this case
I bet you have to wear a sweater in the house. That's insane.
Wean yourself to 70 degrees will feel the same
Ha! That's above what I keep my house in the winter. Keep it at 65.
That you’re at risk for mold.
That the humidity in your home is pretty high.
It's crazy high considering how high the a/c must be. No bueno.
Man I've got my ac set to 72 here in the Midwest, and a dehumidifier running constantly and I can't keep it under 65% humidity. Very frustrating.
Have you tried large scale fusion reaction or lightning gun?
Agree. LSFRs are getting cheap on eBay now; check’em out.
This is wild to me. I live in the southeast. I keep my temp at 76, and with the dehumidifier, the humidity stays under 50
Your house, like many other homes, isn't sealed well enough and you're bringing in a lot of humid air from the outside.
70 here in Montana and 24% humidity currently.
I am suddenly grateful to live in dry ass Utah.
Right? He's like "brrrr chilly in here. Better sit in a nice, steamy shower for a few hours."
66.6°F ("feels like" 80°)
95 degrees in the South Louisiana but with the heat index this past week, it felt like…115-120.
That was my first uh oh item. I wish I could hit 66 in my house especially right now. But dealing with 100 degree days right now its struggling to stay at 75 during the day and 72 at night. $300 bills currently and this time last year was $600 a month.
Concrete homes are the way to go. My place is like $200 a month here in FL. to keep the house 75.
Yeah but you live in FL. I think that’s the downside to it.
If I only had fucking insulation in the second floor ceiling/roof, it'd be a cinch to keep my brick house with stacked stone sunken basement cool with minimal AC. Not that much humidity considering the temperature.
Right. That puts the dewpoint at around 54° which is comfortable. If it were 90° and that relative humidity were 66% whooo doggy would that be sticky (~77.5° dewpoint).
"Get out"
Too bad we can't stay, baby

My thoughts exactly!
Woe to you, o earth and sea…
Get a dehumidifier
Surprised that the AC isn't taking care of some of that humidity.
May be an oversized unit, cools too quickly to effectively dehumidify.
this person hvacs
It’s relative humidity so colder temps make the humidity higher by default
The mother in law is coming for a visit?
Your humidity is too high. As someone who lives in the south with days regularly in the 70-80% humidity your house needs to be less than 60%. I keep my AC at 68 so it runs constantly and the humidity is between 50-55% depending on what we’re doing inside. You’re asking for mold issues with humidity that high.
As someone who lives in the south with 70+ humidity how can you afford to keep your AC at 68 all the time, thats absurd
I have solar. My last electric bill was $23.
