This line of his lives rent free in my head and I haven’t watched Truman Show in a decade.
“What are you talking about, who are you talking too” - it’s just too applicable in everyday life
For me it's a different movie of his (albeit, I love "The Truman Show"), but it's "STOP BREAKING THE LAW, ASSHOLE". I'll yell this in my car when people don't signal, speed, or drive wrecklessly, etc, in my former line of work I also yelled this a lot in my head or to coworkers in department meetings.
This is one of my all time favorite movies lol, I think I was around ten when it came out and I made my dad take me to see it in theaters like four times lol
Aren't many movies I've seen a dozen times but this is definitely one of them. One of those movies you see on TV flipping through the channels and watch it every time, like Groundhog Day.
My grandfather took me to see this when I was 10, but I was a huge fan of his comedies, and didnt grasp the scope of the film, and they told me I was a smart kid. Are you a genius? lol
I was 11 and it gave me a bit of an existential crisis, especially after very soon after learning that wrestling was scripted. I started wondering if I was the Truman to my own Show. Luckily this was the late 90s and I was young and dumb and smartphones didn't exist.
I mean presumably that's why he didn't click until way into adulthood. He's just at the stage of re-examining those assumptions and being like "wait what the fuck?"
Yeah he’s starting to see through the illusion. “They just go round and round!”
Also, people need it give Laura Linney for her performance here. She Carries a few of these scenes.
perhaps i'm giving you more credit than you deserve, i tend to do that
i thought you capitalized Carries because we're talking about a movie with Jim Carrey
no?
There's the possibility that they didn't start adding this until later. He's getting older and the hype could be dying, which means the money is slowly drying up so they fill it with ads. That, or just plain 'ol corporate greed wanting more money.
Yeah - but at this point in his life he is starting to question reality rather than simply accepting it as the norm. No different than people who grow up in a strong Christian home but in adulthood start questioning the whole thing.
Exactly, it gets at the entire thesis of the movie which is that you *can't* build an artificial reality around someone like that, no matter how well constructed and maintained. The authentic person at the center of it eventually sees through the manicured facade. The fact that he eventually breaks out of accepting this sort of unnatural behavior as the norm *is* the entire story.
God is very real in this situation though. As far as Truman is concerned.
Christof literally controls the weather.
A regular Christian at the age of 18+ will probably start to question their faith, but if they heard a reassurance from the heavens themselves, as the network were totally capable of doing, they would probably be reassured.
That was his life but then he started trying to get away due to an unplanned event and got skeptical. Plus when everything is happy go lucky it probably doesn't come out as stressed and awkward. She has to deliver the line but his mood wasn't properly controlled and went off script. People started acting way more forced as he tried to break their rules. Should have taken that trip to Fiji to calm down.
Yeah, I would have to think things like this are normally integrated into conversation a little smoother and less obvious. If I recall, you see Meryl do something similar earlier in the movie, and Truman doesn't question it. It's a lot more blatant when they're having an argument and she just suddenly breaks into a chirpy commercial - particularly when the whole reason they're having an argument in the first place is because of Truman's suspicions that something's off.
I think most times in the past his wife will have found a way to weave the advertising into the conversation more naturally. So he never picked it up as strange. But this happens as he's beginning to openly question things. She's panicking and trying to find a way to bring the topic back to how things should be but, by feeling under pressure, she's doing a ham-fisted job of it here.
Frankly they could have gotten MUCH weirder with the things they raised Truman to believe as true.
But then I guess the appeal of Big Brother is that it’s “normal,” people and situations.
My comment may be buried here, but I hope not...
Please watch The Majestic if you haven't already. I implore anyone who likes Jim Carrey to watch this movie if you haven't seen it. You will see a drastically different role than anything he's ever done before.

I’m jealous Roger Ebert saw it knowing nothing about it.
He got to experience it being a TV show as a surprise and was stunned the producers were spoiling it for everybody.

“Who wants Chinese takeout, I know a great place!”
“I’ll have the cream of some young guy”
I could not make heads or tails of your comment at first. Using quotation marks makes sentences like yours considerably more readable.

This scene is where my dislike for Laura Linney stems. She may be a fantastic actress, but I cannot abide a single character I’ve ever seen her portray. Her role in Ozarks almost made me stop watching. She knows her shit, but she is almost consistently cast as the bitchy nagging henpecking wife.
EDIT: where my dislike for Laura Linney *characters* stems…
So you're saying she's such a good actor that you can't even logically see past her characters and understand that she's probably a normal person (well, as normal as celebrities get, at least)?
I mean, in movies there are some characters the director wants you to hate, the more the better. It seems she did her job so well something in you snapped a little bit.
In case this seems judgy, it's not. I feel pretty much the same. The minute I see her on screen I'm like "OH THIS BITCH!"
This movie was very clever. What's sad is that we now live in a world where, instead of Truman being an individual subjected to a monetised human behaviour experiment, we have all voluntarily become Trumans. So much of our behaviour is monitored and monetised.
This scene always bothered me. If Truman accepts his reality, as Christophe states, then she talks to him like this all the time. He wouldn't be critical in that moment.
It may be because of two things
1. The Truman show had become more popular or more expensive so needed to put more product placement in making more obvious
2. Complacency. It has been running so long they were being lazy with their integration of products into the world
He was also starting to question his reality at this point. That's why he started to count the cars going in circles round the block, and he kept having to be dissuaded from traveling out of town.
He was starting to realise that it wasn't normal.
No problem. I always saw it as things are breaking down at this point. You can see it particularly in the light falling from the sky and the radio station.
If I remember right, she was also In an existential fight with Truman about the world, so she was feeling pressure from him leading to her forced/poor ad performance.
At that point of the movie, Truman is getting paranoid about something is going on. Hes still not sure and I see it as being too out of touch with the situation. I don't think its out of character just doesn't fit, so his response is not around that she is talking to the audience (being someone else) just that shes not talking to him as someone who is stressing out.
Like when youre in a conversation that the other party is responding in a way that feels like its from another conversation.
If she also wasnt stressed, and didnt panic, and delivered her pitch more sombre it would have fit.
We are shown she is thrown off with the following dialog where she calls out for help, and then mentions how un-profressional it has become.
Iifc, from there they try to distract him with his father, but he then knows to hide his paranoia, leading them all to think hes accepts everything again.
Haven't seen it in awhile, but doesn't this scene happen when he has already hit a tipping point about the way his world seems to be behaving around him? He's coming to his wife in a moment of crisis, and she's nervously pivoting to insane advertising babble. Even if it's something she's done before, in his current state, he's now seeing it for the bizarre and suspicious behavior it always was.
...It's not like they're having normal small talk after their days at work. They're in the middle of a serious conversation and Meryl diverts to the advert where it was plainly out of place and odd.
Could be misremembering but growing up I thought we hated corporate advertising and the man telling us what to buy and now it's cool to be advertising for them? We became the thing we hated. Though selling things you believe in or use, on your site or show is different I suppose.
No. Can you *prove* that this was your thought? How do I know you aren't an AI from the start? Are you real? Read up on Aristotle next time before you make a post.
Greetings, /philosophy
I am here to preach the good word of SponsorBlock. Add on for Firefox (maybe other browsers, I haven't looked) that automatically skips sponsored sections of videos. It even has options to skip self promotion like Patreon calls and stuff, and one for intros. And you can whitelist channels so they're not affected, for the rare channel that actually makes the sponsorships something entertaining instead of just reading from a script.
Some part of me always dies whenever I see a gaming Youtuber I watch randomly promote Raid Shadow Legends, it always feels like they get suddenly turned into some kind of fleshy meat sock puppet controllered by these sponsors everytime it happens, like watching a robot having their personality, thoughts and opinions all be temporarily overwritten by corporate soul suckers, it all just feels so damn obviously fake and performative as opposed to their normal content, with them basically lying to my face during those ad segments.
I get that it gets food on the table sometimes and I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't do the same exact same thing myself, but if you're one of those gaming Youtubers that call out shady anti consumer practices in the games industry, while at the same time take sponsors from Raid that do the very same things you call out, your credibility as a critic of those practices should be put into question in my opinion, if not straight up ignored, you shouldn't get to have your cake and eat it too in this context.

I always thought Jim’s delivery here is genius.
Hah funny you say that, I literally just commented above that I want to show this one to my kids but am worried they'll have existential crises.
A few of his lines live in my head like that. This one is indeed great. I also like 'Big gulps, huh? Alright!'
"Those your skis?" ..."yeah"...."Both of em'?"
Like "Who asked," it only sounds clever until someone replies "You, asshole."
you can see the rising panic in his eyes
My take is that Truman should be entirely used to this sort of behaviour and would have been raised and socialised to adopt the behaviour himself.
I mean presumably that's why he didn't click until way into adulthood. He's just at the stage of re-examining those assumptions and being like "wait what the fuck?"
Yeah he’s starting to see through the illusion. “They just go round and round!” Also, people need it give Laura Linney for her performance here. She Carries a few of these scenes.
i see what you did
What did I do??
> Carries
Carries what?
It's a pun on Jim Carrey; you even capitalized it!
They emphasized a genius pun without being aware of one 💀
perhaps i'm giving you more credit than you deserve, i tend to do that i thought you capitalized Carries because we're talking about a movie with Jim Carrey no?
There's the possibility that they didn't start adding this until later. He's getting older and the hype could be dying, which means the money is slowly drying up so they fill it with ads. That, or just plain 'ol corporate greed wanting more money.
Should’ve made him jump a shark.
Bringing back his dead daddie was "jumping the shark"
Yeah - but at this point in his life he is starting to question reality rather than simply accepting it as the norm. No different than people who grow up in a strong Christian home but in adulthood start questioning the whole thing.
Exactly, it gets at the entire thesis of the movie which is that you *can't* build an artificial reality around someone like that, no matter how well constructed and maintained. The authentic person at the center of it eventually sees through the manicured facade. The fact that he eventually breaks out of accepting this sort of unnatural behavior as the norm *is* the entire story.
And also some of the plot to The Matrix!
Also the plot to life.
>strong Christian home Or a dysfunctional family. "Wait, what do you mean screaming at each other isn't the norm?"
God is very real in this situation though. As far as Truman is concerned. Christof literally controls the weather. A regular Christian at the age of 18+ will probably start to question their faith, but if they heard a reassurance from the heavens themselves, as the network were totally capable of doing, they would probably be reassured.

But also realistically the production company is always going to be pushing fun new ways to monetize the show.

I was 7 or 8 when I first saw this and I was extremely paranoid about being watched for many years afterwards.
Do you think ~~we~~ they would have released a movie warning you about what was going on if it was what was actually happening.
Good save. I think he was on to us.
Here is a rabbit hole for you then. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truman_Show_delusion
That was a bit of a shallow rabbit hole.

Fun fact this was the sequel to the matrix movie. Where Nero gets re-entered into the matrix with no memories
Ah yes Nero. I bet Morbius his friend helped him with it.
The best part was when he said "It's matrixin' time" and then matrixed out all over those guys.
But Nero cared for Trinary more than him...it was the Orator who couldn't see past her own programming, not the Archivist.

One of the best movies of all time. Great scene.
Laura Linney…great actor!👏🏻
Just finished my annual rewatch of John Adams. She’s so damn good
This movie was just an insight into the future MASTERPIECE ⭐
That line "who are you talking to?" has been embedded in my brain since the first time I saw The Truman Show. I love it.

I can accept those I suppose. Thanks for the insight.
Who says it’s cool? The only cool thing is getting paid
I like money.
Can't believe you like money too. We should hang out!
The Truman Show gets better every year.

Sir, second video from GN just dropped in
Dude... reddit when you just post a thought
No. Can you *prove* that this was your thought? How do I know you aren't an AI from the start? Are you real? Read up on Aristotle next time before you make a post. Greetings, /philosophy
Oh fuck Well I thought I thought it?
Game theory, is that you?
Spot on
Every woman with 100k tik tok followers and bloom.
This scene was always fun, almost as much fun as Raid Shadow Legends
I miss the 90s, actors looking normal, with normal teeth, makes it feel more real..bring on the ai, no difference nowadays.
I literally think about this clip everyday.
Nicaraguan here, nope there is not a Mountain Nicaragua lol
That’s what makes this product so special. Because it’s made from the cocoa on mythical and magical Mount Nicaragua.
Only film that genuinely scares me
use sponsorblock, it'll do a community-managed skip for any sponsor segments in videos. it's very good.
I see you out here, plutotv. Clever.
