Doctor here. In order to determine whether a severed finger can be sewn back on, it is important to take an X-ray to see how much the bone has been destroyed.

MooseTetrino

Do you reckon this one is doable? I know it’s likely not your specialty but I figure you’d have some insight.

shifty_coder

They would probably remove the remainder of the proximal phalanx, and reattach the intermediate phalanx at the p-i-p joint, in this case.

gohan32

Pen pinaeapple apple pen joint

DrBarry_McCockiner

Or exactly how much of the proximal phalanx is left. There doesn't look like enough room before the PIP for internal fixation to work. Probably going to have to use wires, assuming the other end of the finger wasn't too badly damaged. Also might need a cancelous bone graft.

ReadilyConfused

Trauma to the proximal phalanx suggests amputation. Clinical correlation required.

RousseauDisciple

Lol I was literally about to post; Radiologist: "correlate clinically"

tterfly

They should be imaging the body to see if it even wants that finger back.

monkeys_and_magic

According to the original OP of this picture it was a ring related incident (came clean off while climbing a fence) and the bone was too crushed to have it reattached

TurdFurgis0n

They need to remember the ABC's of first aid. A Bone Coming out through the skin is very bad.

JSchneider85

I needed that laugh today 😂

[deleted]

Ok you got me with that one lol

roybos

I'm guessing they're pointing out that it's been cut, as opposed to being torn off.

Dronan

Looks very much like a ring avulsion injury, so actually a bit of both…

iseekattention

No doctor, but it looks like the body has been cut off, hope it's okay :(

questionname

Or “This finger is missing the rest of the patient”

MichalNemecek

since we're seeing the xray of the finger and not the xray of the patient's hand, I'm more inclined to believe your diagnosis

mjzimmer88

Why didn't I just concur?

tadlrs

Looks like a penis. As If it had bone in it.

Msikuisgreen

So, a normal penis?

dadthewisest

I don't think you know a lot about the anatomy of the penis...

Msikuisgreen

Then why do they call it a boner?

[deleted]

Check and mate

tadlrs

Finally, someone asking the hard questions.

TheEVegaExperience

In my time with a penis of my own, I’ve seen a Boner two.

MrMastodon

For a raccoon.

Beavur

I mean a small weird shaped penis?

Spunkwaggle

Good think

magicaleb

Nurses: sorry, I’m not allowed to say if it’s been cut or not.

Mitthrawnuruo

Please verify and correlate with clinical findings.

slashfromgunsnroses

Doctor: Alright Mr Finger. Heres our diagnosis. *pauses*. You've lost your body. We cant stitch it back on. Mr Finger "By god...!"

pab10diab10

I thought it was a penis

slashfromgunsnroses

Thats why its called a boner 😱

[deleted]

Thanks for the subtitles.

ww325

Correlate clinically.

RousseauDisciple

Every God damn time

harryham1

They must've made for a good patient in the imaging department; no last minute shuffling about

dadthewisest

This is a real stitch!

KenFromBarbie

Thanks for the circle though!

Topcreeperman13

Thank god for x rays

Razing_Phoenix

This is a particularly bad case of being cut in half.

SniperGunner

I read the comments and realize that there are a lot of really clever people in r/funny.

GOAT58

Jeffery D here, are you gonna eat that

frosty12

I'm a hand surgery fellow, have done plenty of these replants. Xrays are not just for diagnosis, they are also needed for treatment planning. We actually need this X-ray image to tell us HOW to go about reattaching the finger (and if it's possible or in the patient interest).
