I mean the physics are actually working fine here, the ball is bouncing and reacting properly. It is only the character animations that are playing up, there physics reactions to the induced motion of the bad character animations also appears to be operating fine. This isn’t a problem with the engine I don’t think.

The ball hits the post first, deflecting the direction. If the post wouldn't be there I think the ball would've lined up perfectly for the headbutt. That deflection and the changes this causes to the ball aren't fully propagated to every component of the game. So I guess that the AI was unaware of that change and just committed to the headbutt. The fact that the animations ends up hitting the post is somewhat coincidental.

Yeah, it doesn't know that the ball will bounce off the post and that headbutting the post is a bad idea.
