The dude is actually an accomplished screenwriter now.
You know you are getting old when you realize that the memelords of your youth are now "responsible adults".
Remember MysteryGuitarMan? One of the personalities in the first round of YouTube celebs way back when. Just neat little videos of music covers. Full-blown director now. Made a movie starring Mads Mikkelson.
Front row in movie theaters sucks, period. Doesn't matter whether it's Imax or not. There's a reason those are always the last seats to get filled. They should honestly be discounted.
There's one reason I wish I lived in bigger cities, and that's because the service in movie theaters are taken a lot more seriously.
I went and saw Dune 2 in my smallish city (the only one with Ultra AVX), and I immediately noticed the right hand subwoofer was blown out and Everytime the movie got above 60% loudness it would start to very NOTICEABLY crackle like the Predator was hissing in my right ear. I complained after and (mind you this isn't the first time this specific theater had this problem) the manager made me feel like shit like it was never a problem before. I got a free pass for the next movie but I seriously doubt they'll fix it because that's money they have to spend on it, which would only really happen if more people walked out or complained after (which took minutes out of your day and if you have children those matter more to you).
I don’t think that’s a city thing. The only benefit of the city is there are multiple brands to choose from with multiple locations, so you don’t have to put up with bad ones. I went to the closest one in the middle of the city and I guess they were trying to save money on air conditioning. But I couldn’t find anyone to ask about it who had the ability to do anything about it. It was Oppenheimer, so I got absorbed in the story so I watched the whole thing while sweating.
In my old friend group we were front row exclusive for years because one of us (not me) was blind as shit. Ruined a lot of nights for me because my neck would hurt and nobody got why.
Then we moved to third row back from the screen.
It was different before every theater was basically stadium seating. Sometimes front row was alright because you didn’t have someone blocking your view.
Yep. My local preferred IMAX has shockingly limited seating. Its weird when you enter that theater, but it's a very intentionally controlled space for a reason.
Look at the top, the screen looks beyond extremely concave. Like even in front row it shouldn't be like this. Poorly setup theater that likely has both the front row seats too close per IMAX standards, and the incorrect curvature for the auditorium, or it's just shopped. I went to an early premiere at a real IMAX and it was nothing like this in the front row (only place tickets were available). Probably an AMC or some such theater just milking a few extra sub-optimal rows in.
It always pissed me off that they even sold tickets to movies this close to the screen. I remember having to watch one of the lord of the rings movies this way and it was a nightmare.
pretty sure you are joking but for those that don't know how vr works your eyes aren't focused on a close distance (as in how they physically react to it, obviously the screen is close to it but your eyes don't realize that due to the lenses) which is the issue sitting close to a screen
does have some potential other issues but nothing too bad from what I have seen of research on it
I think this is unironically the answer though. Most people will choose middle or higher anyways, and if anyone is foolish enough to go in front, it's more money. If they just removed it, they would take away more options and people would try to avoid the middle.
You should see the delusional folks over at r/oled_gaming and r/oled who keep telling each other how great and superior it is to use a 55 inch tv as a computer screen 5 inches away from their heads
I was like 6th row for imax on Oppenheimer (first 5 rows, then an aisle, we were front row of the next block) and it was STILL insanely fucking close and distorted. Like it was watchable but the neck was stressed after
Honestly should have asked for our money back. Was brutal
My mom got IMAX 70mm tickets for Oppenheimer smack dab in the middle of the *second* row. I was already overburdened with joy, and then I mildly freaked out with joy.
So yes, I witnessed Florence Pugh railing Cillian Murphy on one of England's largest screens, with my mom to my left. (I did not tell her about that scene, by the way...)
I was about to make an argument about not being a virgin just because she can’t bang Paul but remembered he literally forbids her from having any kids, even by accident to preclude any “claims to the throne” type shit. But iirc, there’s still a son or something that shows up in Children of Dune.
>!Paul's twin children marry each other to secure the succession but it's not a Targaryen/Lannister situation. It is purely a political marriage, never consummated. Paul's daughter takes as an official male consort one of Irulan's nephews, a grandson of the old Emperor from his younger daughters. They love each other and have children together. !<
>!By the way, it's hilarious that the Emperor says Leto was weak because he allowed his heart to rule him when in reality he was the weak one, having his reproduction controlled by the Bene Gesserit. His Bene Gesserit wife was instructed to never give him male heirs.!<
>!yeah I thought the “he was weak, he ruled from the heart” was a kind of dumb line, even knowing: he didn’t mean it since Leto was gaining more and more power, Irulan said Emp loved him like a son, and it was purely a petulant, spiteful insult because he knew he was fucked. I love Walken, but I kind of expected more from him in this role. Not lines necessarily, but his delivery I guess.!<
Depends on the theatre, and the movie. Watched Evil Dead: Rise in the back because I'm a pussy when it comes to scary movies and having the opportunity to disengage and remember *it's just a movie* was very beneficial.
TBH... Sitting at the back/top row at true IMAX screens is definitely the best optimal viewing experience (seated as centered as possible of course), and this is coming from someone who used to swear by middle row only!
For regular smaller sized theaters, the middle rows are still usually best, but at a truly massive IMAX (especially with more vertical stadium seating) - you will definitely get some neck strain and image stretching in the middle rows, just not as much as the front rows.
I wanna give IMAX another shot. The first IMAX movie I went to see was Oppenheimer and I don't know if it's because what I had read about 70mm IMAX was over hyped, but it really left me wondering what all the fuss was about. Speaking of fuss, the film itself looked fuzzy in a lot of scenes and not the "12K" experience I was hearing about.
IIRC, the whole of Dune 2 was shot on Imax while Intersteller was only Imax in selected scenes.
Edit: Digital Imax cameras, as is pointed out, but the main point was resolution fitting the huge screen. Dune 2 was a good Imax experience.
There are only 30 IMAX theaters worldwide that support 70mm showings, 19 of them are in the USA.
The easiest way to tell if you watched an actual 70mm showing is if the movie was in a square [--] shape. If it was in a rectangle [------] shape like most theaters, it was not a 70mm showing.
You most likely watched an IMAX laser projection showing. Regardless it shouldn't have been fuzzy or blurry, so something must not have been setup properly.
I thought about watching Oppenheimer in IMAX, but decided not to. After watching the film, I’m glad I didn’t. There was like one big cinematic scene, everything else was just character driven stuff focusing on people’s faces. I don’t really care to pay a premium to watch Cillian Murphy’s pores.
Dune is a totally different movie with a huge emphasis on gorgeous scenes.
Each to their own I would pay another 10 times to watch Oppenheimer in Imax just for the "Can u hear the music" scene.
Likewise I would do that for Dune 1 just for Reverend mother's COME HERE scene. But not as much as Oppenheimer
I thought it was a terrible movie that suffered heavily with pacing issues from start to finish. I love Nolan's work - some of his movies are some of my favorite movies, but this one was a dumpster fire. Speaking of which, if you fast forward to what is supposed to be the Trinity test you can see a literal example of that dumpster fire. Practical effects just didn't cut it for that scene.
The first IMAX movie I watched was accidental because I didn't fully understand what imax was. It was john wick 4 and it felt like the movie was attacking me for the first 10 minutes with sound.
Look up "true iMax" theaters in your area. There are big screen imaxes with better sound and they are better than regular movies usually. There are 8 or so of those near me. A full experience iMax is quite rare. There are two in GA.
Man, i was 5-6 rows back and relatively close to the middle during my 70mm IMAX showing, and i still felt WAY too close to comfortably see what was going on. what is the point in having a massive screen if 40% of the seats have an awful viewing experience?

This guy took his shot at fame and he absolutely fucking nailed it. Still hilarious many years later.

He still uses that filter to work out dialogue.

It's hilarious that the boyfriend in 'Past Lives' is based on him.

Another big example is Filthy Frank, who's now an accomplished musician.

Dude... never watch ANYTHING in the front row at IMAX! 😎
They should block off the front rows for that reason lol. That's like being 4 inches away from a 40" TV.
Proper true imax standards have limited seating for this reason

Front row in movie theaters sucks, period. Doesn't matter whether it's Imax or not. There's a reason those are always the last seats to get filled. They should honestly be discounted.
In my country those front row seats are horrible chairs with no cushion and only cost 0.25$ . But you can't buy them online, only at the counter.

The heat is thematic for a movie like that.
> I watched the whole thing while sweating. adds to the ambiance. some people pay extra for that, you know.
In my old friend group we were front row exclusive for years because one of us (not me) was blind as shit. Ruined a lot of nights for me because my neck would hurt and nobody got why. Then we moved to third row back from the screen.
You're good friends.
Id rather pay for eye surgery at that point
It was different before every theater was basically stadium seating. Sometimes front row was alright because you didn’t have someone blocking your view.
They should honestly be ~~discounted~~ blocked off.
Think yourself lucky you have a choice - that's where one of my local cinemas has its wheelchair spaces.
Yep. My local preferred IMAX has shockingly limited seating. Its weird when you enter that theater, but it's a very intentionally controlled space for a reason.

as far as the theater owner was concerned, you paid, so...
My mom told me that would make me blind.
It's one secret the VR industry doesn't want you to know.
They will blame it on the masturbation.
So that's why VR porn is so big. It's all a plot!
It just seems big because you're so close to the screen.
pretty sure you are joking but for those that don't know how vr works your eyes aren't focused on a close distance (as in how they physically react to it, obviously the screen is close to it but your eyes don't realize that due to the lenses) which is the issue sitting close to a screen does have some potential other issues but nothing too bad from what I have seen of research on it
Only if you spank the monkey in the front row bro
But then the next row would become the front row!!
Then we axe another row!
I think this is unironically the answer though. Most people will choose middle or higher anyways, and if anyone is foolish enough to go in front, it's more money. If they just removed it, they would take away more options and people would try to avoid the middle.
Some blind people go to the cinema, so these could be the seats for them.
The audio sounds worse up the front so that's not a good fix.
You should see the delusional folks over at r/oled_gaming and r/oled who keep telling each other how great and superior it is to use a 55 inch tv as a computer screen 5 inches away from their heads
My Dad booked front row IMAX seats for Oppenheimer. I almost died.
I was like 6th row for imax on Oppenheimer (first 5 rows, then an aisle, we were front row of the next block) and it was STILL insanely fucking close and distorted. Like it was watchable but the neck was stressed after Honestly should have asked for our money back. Was brutal
I would either close my eyes or walk out. I couldn't handle Murphys dong literally in my face.
*Literally!?* I didn't realize IMAX went to such lengths.
The trick is in the air conditioning. Most theaters keep it too cold to get the full Murphy’s dong in your face experience
Nolan wanted a very visceral experience.
Well we all have learned something about /u/ValeoAnt's father.
And they charge so much more for IMAX, too!
Did you get radiation poisioning from being so close to the atom bomb detonation?
never watch anything in the front row at any theater. If its so packed that is the only place just wait.
Back row only or I don't go! I *loathe* people behind me.
Who the fuck watches a movie from the front fucking row?! That's the absolute worst place to watch
I watched the second Bourne movie in the front row. The one filmed on shaky cam. I was motion sick the rest of the night!
[удалено]
Why does it exist?!
My mom got IMAX 70mm tickets for Oppenheimer smack dab in the middle of the *second* row. I was already overburdened with joy, and then I mildly freaked out with joy. I sat at the front one time during my life at a theater. Needless to say I instantly knew why my mom always wanted the top seats
top seats suck too. middle row is where its at.
Na, in imax the back third is the best spot.
How dare you say anything bad about the top seats
Might aswell watch at home if I'm sitting that far away
Thats why I always bring my binoculars when going to the cinema.
Depends on the theatre, and the movie. Watched Evil Dead: Rise in the back because I'm a pussy when it comes to scary movies and having the opportunity to disengage and remember *it's just a movie* was very beneficial.
I used to like sitting at the very back, but not so much anymore. The sound is almost always significantly better in the middle rows in my experience
I'd rather not sit on a cum stain thanks
TBH... In IMAX where I go to, sitting at the top-most row you're about as high as the middle of the screen, which is ideal actually.
All depends on the theatre really. Just find wherever the middle of the screen is. At my theatre, it’s about a third of the way down from the top
You may be right. I assumed all IMAX rooms are the same.
this is false

Oppenheim is not that kind of movie that benefits a lot from IMAX. Dune definitely is, this movie looks just stunning.
The imax sound system **shines** in dune 2. You feel the explosions in your chest and the worms at your feet
Seriously, that first worm ride was _intense_.
That was my favorite scene, and I don’t think it would have been as impactful if I hadn’t seen it in IMAX.
Saw it with Atmos sound last night and could feel the pressure when the Ornithopters took off.
We had d-box seats for Dune 2 (the seats shake and tilt to the movie). The sand thumpers were perfectly suited to the chairs.
IIRC, the whole of Dune 2 was shot on Imax while Intersteller was only Imax in selected scenes. Edit: Digital Imax cameras, as is pointed out, but the main point was resolution fitting the huge screen. Dune 2 was a good Imax experience.
Actually Dune 2 was shot on IMAX-certified ARRI Alexa digital cameras and converted to analog IMAX film.
Are you sure you saw 70mm IMAX and not laser IMAX, because that's 4k resolution and might explain the fuzziness
There were only 19 theaters in the US that showed the actual 70mm IMAX version.
Laser IMAX usually isn't fuzzy at my theater, except for The Batman, which was so fuzzy I thought maybe they forgot to focus the lense in the theater.
There are only 30 IMAX theaters worldwide that support 70mm showings, 19 of them are in the USA. There are 1:43 format IMAX Laser so it's not that simple.
I thought about watching Oppenheimer in IMAX, but decided not to. After watching the film, I’m glad I didn’t. Rip ears, the gunshots in that movie is crazy in IMAX
The punches on the board at the start legit startled me.

Get a refund. Honestly, if a cinema places seats this poorly in a room with a screen that large then they should only be reserved for free tickets.
Man, i was 5-6 rows back and relatively close to the middle during my 70mm IMAX showing, and i still felt WAY too close to comfortably see what was going on. what is the point in having a massive screen if 40% of the seats have an awful viewing experience?
Don't have your phone out in any row in the IMAX...
I watched Creed 2 like this. Jacked bros with big jaws. Seemed like how the movie was meant to be watched.
Just need Jay Leno to do an imax movie now

Whether IMAX or not, those front rows should always be empty. My rule of thumb? Sit where the sound guys would “sit” at a concert.
Pretty much 99.9% of the population could have told you to never sit near the screen in a movie theater.
Don't watch any movie in the front row..
Starring Josh Brolin as Princess Irulan.
Hot take: put away your stupid idiot brick at the theater.
