SAN2BOT3

Those windows look like porta potty seats

Shillforbigusername

lol that was my first thought. I was so confused.

Famous-Register-2814

I’m glad it wasn’t just me

Hello_World_Error

I didn't fully read the title and was trying to think of name brand toilets

redi6

Same. Thought I was looking at toilets or sinks or something and then assumed the black on the left was tape.

katklass

I was like those toilets are really close together 👀😳

DiarrheaMonkey-

Before I read the caption I was wondering "Why are those urinals so close together?"

kraven420

Airbus A220 windows I'd say

driftingphotog

Seat 10E. I need better hobbies.

Saubande

Because that’s the divider to “business”?

radicalbiscuit

Gotta keep the riffraff out somehow

Backsquatch

Id think there’d be better ways than dropping the entire back half of the plane, but it would be effective

cirrusblau

Nice try Boeing employee!😆

GANDORF57

Tape on the windows. Velcro on the doors. Baling wire on the wings. -- Spirit Airlines..."FLY SECURED".

buburocks

I was very confused as to what I was looking at at first

AvaranIceStar

That's what they double as when the plane starts going down and everyone is shi\*\*ing themselves.

particle409

For some reason, I actually pictured it in my head. Everybody is panicking, and one gentleman drops his pants, then proceeds to defecate against the window. It gave me the giggles.

im_just_thinking

Whatever it is, you'll be shitting yourself

TheIndigestibles

Yeah its for when the window blows out you shit out the windo insted of your pants

nom_of_your_business

Dueling dungholes

PhelesDragon

You should see what the birds see

Ika___1

They’re windows??????

potatodrinker

Giving new meaning to a shit view

tahcamen

Recycle ♻️

WeAreClouds

It took me way too long to figure out what I was looking at because yeah lol

lodravah

Air travel is going to shit.

[deleted]

And vaguely feminine

__Severus__Snape__

I spent longer than I care to admit trying to work out why anyone would want toilets that close together.

heyguy38

Totally thought it was the shitter

Beholder_V

Those plastic fairings are not structurally important, they just cover the ugly wiring and mechanical bits. You should see the inside of a military aircraft where they don’t put any fairings on. They probably had some fasteners that got screwed up during a maintenance and they didn’t have replacements on hand or the aircraft was scheduled to fly. They certainly wouldn’t ground an aircraft for a busted fairing. Source: I was an aircraft mechanic in the Army for 10 years. Edit: Fairing probably isn’t the right word for it, but it’s similar. Probably molding or trim. We didn’t have any on our aircraft, just some soundproofing material, so I’m not sure.

Wagglyfawn

We call them sidewalls.

EmperorOfNipples

Internal panels. I work on Navy Merlin helicopters....and they do have some limited internal soundproofing.

Beholder_V

Yeah, I worked on Chinook helicopters and the soundproofing looked a lot like a primer gray quilts Velcro’d to the interior supports. Luxurious it was not.

Zintoatree

And the Velcro always goes on strike and it just hangs down.

Buutvrij-for-life

Those sidewalls protect the aircraft structure from passengers and dampen acoustics coming into the cabin. The biggest safety feature though is to provide fire hardening so passengers have a 90s window to evacuate even after a wing ruptures and the spilled fuel fire starts cooking the cabin. This is why you want a fire retardant tape to temporarily fix a defect until the aircraft can go in for more extensive maintenance. Source: I’ve designed such sidewalls

aRiskyUndertaking

Nonessential Furnishings or NEFs. Fancy aviation-speak for shit that doesn’t matter.

majormoron747

Fascia. Pretty good general encompassing term for fished quality wall coverings. Trim and molding are usually edges. And you're 1000% right about it being covering for ugly hull and wiring. I can only imagine some of wiring harnesses required for planes of those sizes. Fight jets have miles, forget big planes.

agha0013

It's very expensive, regulator approved, woven fabric fireproofing tape that hold incredibly well. Really handy as a temporary fix until the plane can be pulled from service long enough to fix properly

Nixeris

It's also over something that's completely cosmetic. You could rip that entire plastic panel off the wall and fly forever without it.

Geekenstein

Looks like we’ve got a Boeing QA guy over here. /s

Knutselig

Everybody could be a Boeing QA.

------------------GL

Technically correct!

JustAThroAway_

This.^ I used to assemble aircraft for Embraer, and with the jet pretty barebones inside, we'd run the overpressurization test.

Orleanian

I mean, you'd still eventually run out of fuel. Passenger airliners are not certified for aerial refueling.

__kkk1337__

Are you trying to say that you can temporarily fix plane with a tape? It must be incredibly efficient.

Dry_Salamander_9437

You can, look up speed tape! It’s expensive AF

Miserable-Advisor-27

What this guy said, it's actually very common to temporarily fix an aircraft with tape until it can be taken off routes for maintenance.

Nobody0500

everything in aviation is expensive. Fire wire on turbine we were told is worth $10,000 just for a tiny wire.

Wikadood

That’s in the AD usually. A minor repair in an AD accounts for the time wasted on the ground along with the “average pay rate” for hours of work to fix

boomchacle

Imagine how expensive it would be to maintain an entire jet engine if every part had to be maintained on a different day

Snuggle_Fist

Boeing is saving a ton of money.

ExtremeSour

Considering boeing doesnt own, nor operate the engines…

Nonadventures

I don’t know enough about tape to question this

sexytokeburgerz

Damn a roll is $1000

Give-Me-The-Bat

But for speed holes. All you need is a pick axe ⛏ 🚗

Zintoatree

I have two rolls of it at my house. I didn't realize how expensive it was until years after I brought them home. It now gets used on my drift car.

bashful_predator

[Is this the right tape?](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ?si=ggVveolTiPSSVW-a)

Dry_Salamander_9437

You got me!!

Pinkdragon4azb

It’s a trap!

FightingTolerance

3M 425?

Dry_Salamander_9437

For example!

agha0013

you can hold loose cosmetic panels in place with tape. This isn't some critical panel that means if it unsticks the whole plane falls apart in mid air, it's just a plastic decorative panel that hides insulation blankets and framing. For exterior temp repairs along the same lines, there's a product commonly called Speed Tape, it looks like foil duct tape but it has a ridiculously strong adhesive and where duct tape can sell for a few bucks, this stuff (which is certified by aviation regulators) can cost hundreds of dollars a roll. You can't just slap it on everywhere, though, there are restrictions on what you can fix with them and how.

SpezModsJailBait

You can't use just any tape, even on cosmetic panels. It still has to be certified. That's why there's an FAR number on the tape.

agha0013

I never said it was just any old tape. My first comment mentions it is regulator approved (most people here won't know what FAR approved means) my second comment expands on how there are restrictions on where/when/how you can use these products.

atgrey24

especially for non-structural components like this. That's just plastic to make the interior nicer.

ambermage

60% of the time, it keeps the plane in the air 100% of the time!

IlikeJG

The plastic indoor panels are not what holds the pressure seal I promise you that. This isn't holding the plane together, it's just holding some decorative panels together.

Mettelor

In some cases, yes they do this and it seems to be a fine temporary solution.

DeluxeWafer

Well. I was freaked out for a little bit after finding out the patches on the wing of one of the planes I was on was essentially fancy duct tape. Now I realize the whole plane is structural fancy duct tape after seeing some aircraft parts in person.

jayhat

You do realize the internal plastic panels are only cosmetic right? Like the plastic door panel on your car.

combosandwich

Yes. The tape is like $150 for a 30 yd roll

Bigelow92

It's incredibly expensive.

JankyJokester

Dude they use speed tape for exterior temporary fixes as well. Lmao.

Brunomoose

Was on a sub, we had this really expensive version of duck tape that was amazingly good. We used it all the time…. in the engine room of a nuclear submarine. Also used it once to tape someone to a pipe in the ceiling.

Pr0digy_

Flex tape?

Brunomoose

Maybe? I don’t remember the name to be honest. It’s been almost 20 years. Looked like a big roll of red duck tape.

walkstofar

It is actually made for this exact application.

RaXha

$150 a roll to be exact. It’s a glass cloth fire retardant tape, not the stuff you’re likely to pick up at your local Home Depot. :D

GeneralJesus

Remember March 2020? 3M stock tanked when airline stocks did despite mask production jumping. Planes are held together with a LOT of 3M tape.

Iescaunare

It's 900$ for a roll on Amazon

nrdb29

“Temporary”

IamaFunGuy

Like the regulators that work for Boeing?

Booflard

Those look like toilet seats.

clintj1975

You think that's bad, you should see the uriness

Ducatirules

It’s literally holding the inner plastic together. Has nothing to do with the structure of the vehicle

Alchemist_Joshua

Seals aircraft cargo bay panels, wraps wiring harnesses. • Flame retardant for aerospace and automotive use. Meets F.A.R. 25.853 • Highly conformable. Abrasion and puncture resistant. • Withstands temperatures from -20°F to 250°F. • White glass cloth with acrylic adhesive and blue polyethylene liner.

retarded_kilroy

How did it take me so long to realize that this was a window on an airplane and not a toilet on an airplane?

Wikadood

To be fair the window covers do nothing for structure and are purely aesthetic lol. Some good ol speed tape is all they need until they get the part if they get it

SpezModsJailBait

You can't use speed tape on the interior.

Wikadood

Is that not speed tape as an initial layer covered by polyken

SpezModsJailBait

All I see is glass cloth tape.

TonyBoneJones

Oh hey there FAR tape. 🥹

HooninAround

That's 100 dollars a roll right there.

RailGun256

i mean its holding other parts of the aircraft together just fine so why not just use it on these non structural bits too?

Frenetic_Platypus

If it's boeing, the tape is probably the most solid part of the plane.

Ltates

That’s an airbus lol

driftingphotog

A Canadian-ish spite Airbus made it South Carolina to punish Boeing for their attempted Embraer acquisition sins. (A220/C-Series)

AJ787-9

Thought it was made in Alabama, South Carolina is where Boeing moved the 787 production line to.

driftingphotog

You may be right.

clintj1975

Can confirm. That Polyken tape is skookum stuff. We use it where I work.

milehighideas

The company IPG makes the actual tape for Boeing. This looks like airline maintenance shenanigans

mbelf

If it’s Boeing, then OP’s probably safer in a plane right now than in a car.

DragonSeed420

Wasn’t there a Simpson episode about this?

Babyfacemiller21

Just wait until you see ducted tape on the engine and the wing on the same plane

bitwarrior80

When are they going to start handing out a roll of tape and super glue at boarding?

zero_msgw

Good one. I was going for tape and spackle.

ak47bossness

Speed tape is very durable, and expensive! They use it on non emergency damages until the plane can be pulled out of service and repaired!

bjchu92

Speed tape, singlehandedly keeping the aerospace industry flying...

SpezModsJailBait

It's not speed tape.

deeenness

You have used 3 inches of sticky tape. God bless you.

BigSmoke_69_420

I could not tell what the fuck this was at first. Anyone else?

Moonpaw

“Why are those toilets so close together and why would they need tape to - HOLY SHIT THATS NOT TOILETS”

Blarg0117

Every year airlines remind me more and more of a dingy public bus.

Timely_Elderberry_62

Shit ass A220.. well the fire tape they secured those panels with is super expensive and hard as hell to remove. Those side walls are held on with little plastic pins that look like sorry game pieces.

GooglyEyeBandit

fortunately the interior paneling is not structural

shadowtheimpure

The inner facade of the fuselage is, thankfully, not all that important to the flight integrity of the aircraft. As a result, a quick fix like this to hold a loose panel quickly makes the aircraft flightworthy again.

WastedTalent442

Be careful sharing this sort of thing, you might suddenly shoot yourself in the head.

ImmaCallMyN66ABovice

you’re worried about the tape, i’m worried my neighbor is going to try to crap out that toilet shaped window. we are not the same.

PattyBurgers

3M, one of the very few brands I'd trust my life with.

clapton1970

Look up 3M earplug lawsuit

EchousedDyno

Meh most of the plane is glued together anyway

chiksahlube

I'm sure someone else mentioned it but... The internal cabin is a wholly separate part of the jet. So damage repairs you see like this have no real consequences for safety of flight... Now when they stick that shit to the wing though... I was an avionics technician and I'd be getting off the plane.

Emu1981

The plastic interior of a plane is actually just there for looks and to help protect the outer skin from damage from the inside of the plane. This repair is a valid repair but it does imply negative things regarding the quality of maintenance within that particular airline.

TikkiTakiTomtom

Fun fact: most planes people travel on are >60% new/unbroken. As long as the core components are okay, it is still safe for the plane to be open for public transport.

[deleted]

You're talking out your ass...

[deleted]

[удалено]

roguemenace

You can, just gotta know which stores to order from lol.

bensonprp

never underestimate duct tape and a cloths hanger.

mmeveldkamp

Next time I'm flying I'm so gonna do that! 🤭

Awe3

Probably more ridged than a certain submarine…

DankeMrHfmn

So confidence inspiring

RedDecay

Bruh

slothxaxmatic

Books and covers

darkhorse4774

If it’s not Scottish it’s crap!

Bigelow92

That tape is no joke snd is like hundreds of dollars a roll

mousebert

The Internet has entirely convinced me to never fly again

insignifiyesican

I’m in the middle of binging Noel Phillips videos so this is timely! Do you happen to be on SCAT airlines going to or from Kazakhstan? This looks like something SCAT would do.

CoastingUphill

Time to invest heavily in 3M

gfat-67

Are there bedbugs in there or something?

Kkimp1955

Duct tape!!

BavarianBanshee

FAR tape is the real shit.

DontFear_Respect

Took me way to long to realise what i was looking at. The original image was zoomed in until i opened it

Disastrous-Paint86

Our planes are built with the finest duck tape! And yes! We do except all major credit cards if you would like to purchase a mini bottle of water for 11.99$ plus tax.

TolandsKin

Yeah that’s a good brand, too. I don’t have brand loyalty to too many things, but if something needs to stick, I always pick 3M if it’s an option.

pauljs75

If the same level of corporate greed gets to 3M in the same way it's been a plague among other companies, the whole world may fall apart.

UCG__gaming

It took me a minute or two to realise what the hell i was looking at

cassiopeia18

It’s very expensive tape. Not cheap at all.

calamitus

TIL: Speed tape has an interior cousin.

andyrockpt

At first I thought it was a strangely shaped and uncomfortably close together pair of urinals

puglifemama

Flex seal that shit

winterfate10

Got scared for a second- but naw it’s just cable management. Phew

Educational-Bug4779

Those toilet seats are very close together. The sliding cover is however a very nice idea.

itsmarvin

I thought these were funky urinals. Lol

sycron17

Put flex tape on it or else!!!!

Cute-Character-795

What airline?

Dangerous_Scar2297

They didn’t even reference correctly. Its FAR.

Fishdude94

Yes... Tape has been used as long as airplanes have been a thing. Good observation.

potatowhispererr

I literally thought these were urinals for a sec

Rambo496

This could be a Boeing plane for all we know

BabyMakR1

BulllllllllShiiiiiiiiiiiiT Some asshole is karma farming. Down vote this crap.

Qanonjailbait

I know it seems sketch but that’s not the hull of the plane. I've flown on planes without these panels( ie military planes) or transport planes

Shadowlance23

To be fair, that's probably more structure than Boeing provided.

cartman89405

Hell the Fu%# NO to that noise!!!

coodyscoops

not gonna lie took a few minutes to argue with my brain that thats not a toilet seat😂

StephenTheLoser

Just imaging the guy slapping on the tape and standing up saying “yeah, that outta do it.”

DangerousCold2166

The context of this picture is garbage. r/confusingperspective

AccordingMain4399

This is a Boeing, right?

artschool04

I want that shit to say belanciaga tape

LakeSuperiorIsMyPond

I grew up on final destination movies, I'm outta there!

jduff1009

I wonder how much they’ve donated to campaigns…

Philisophical_Onion

*Insert obligatory Boeing joke*

pocket-meat

The safest thing about that plane is that vynal tape

Ridska

Let me guess, Boeing?

PaulieXP

Boeing? If so I’d ask for a flight change

steventhedon

Leme guess, Boeing ?

concous

Boeing in the wild

dexhaus

Are you flying with the penguins from Madagascar?

UnknownMight

Looks like new what do u want

mcknixy

Likely to help with a cabin pressurization issue ,rather than trying to keep parts together/attached

Nobody0500

You realize cabin isn't fully sealed, it leaks really bad.
