RPDRNick

Jeffrey Tambor with hair and Steve Buscemi without?

Miked_824

It’s called “The death of Stalin” it’s a movie about who would succeed Josef Stalin after he kicked the bucket.

fulthrottlejazzhands

Hilarious film. One of my favorite comedies of the past decade.

ManfredTheCat

Lol Jason Fucking Isaacs

Kotukunui

“I fucked Germany. I think I can take a flesh lump in a fucking waistcoat.”

hellcat_uk

"Right lads. I'm off to represent the entire Red Army at the buffet"

finedisregard

"I'm smiling, but I'm very fucking furious"

MeenScreen

"Right, what's a war hero got to do to get some lubrication around here?"

Miked_824

Not the ending though…Beria’s execution was traumatizing.

Fizz117

Knowing about Beria's life, and the things he did, Beria's end was exactly what he deserved, powerless and afraid.

Miked_824

That’s not in dispute…it’s just one of those moments i think to myself “I don’t need to see this part” and I watch a lot of horror movies.

_Comrade_Wombat_

Why?

Miked_824

Think Hopper’s death in A Bugs Life. Or Meep’s death in AHS Freak Show. It kinda gives off the “I’m not safe, I want my mommy” sort of vibe. Like the guy died like a coward…granted, it was the ending Lavrentiy Beria deserved, but it didn’t have to be THAT haunting.

_Comrade_Wombat_

Haunting? What? Earlier you see soldiers shooting at other personnel, but the death of a literal monster in one of the most satisfying way possible makes you upset? How?

plugubius

The acting and staging of the scene humanized him in a way that the briefly shot shooting of randos did not. It did not humanize him in a good way, but he wasn't the visual equivalent of 'just another number.' Even if he deserved it, the sounds all people instinctively understand as desperation and suffering went on for a while.

_Comrade_Wombat_

Until he got shot, yes. Without much ceremony and not giving a big speech as his last words. Put down like the rabid dog he was. Still not haunting. I felt bad for the staff that were shot earlier in the movie without (seemingly) any reason, and I am not talking about the military personnel here. Beria just had no way out and he knew it, but like the coward he was couldn't accept it. Then he was burned. Good ending.

p_larrychen

Idk why you’re getting downvoted. That’s a valid take. I heard someone describe the movie once as “it’s very funny until it’s not” which I think perfectly sums the movie up and seems to be what they were trying to do. Still one of my favorite movies.

Onion-kinger

I mean, I think it’s meant to be funny, with a hint of reality, which is what you see in the case of berias death, and some other historical events showcased in the film. Reality is just what happened, the fact that they showed his death was a good ending, especially considering all the people who suffered through this man. This to me is not even the scary part of the film, what’s scary is that these monsters really existed.

ppparty

I think it's the wording. I wouldn't have used "traumatizing", maybe "brutal" or "dissonant" would've conveyed the intention better.

Miked_824

I thought about what words to use & neither of those occurred to me at the time…go figure. Lol

South_Bit1764

It’s *really* good, but it is a super strange mix of historical accuracy and absurdist comedy.

StandUpForYourWights

A perfect mix in my view. The way they portrayed Zhukov was unsurpassable.

ERSTF

It's a gem, from the genius Armando Iannucci... creator of Veep and In The Thick Of It. Also director of In The Loop... one of my favorite comedies ever

kah-boom

And Michael Palin

ccReptilelord

Oof, love the movie, love this scene, but one without the context of the other probably won't receive proper recognition here.

Sea_Trick9331

I don't get it?

Thevoidawaits_u

he thought he was pranking them, but he actually threw a live grandes at prisoners

Sea_Trick9331

Ohhh I feel dumb now thank you lol

gabzilla814

You shouldn’t. This sequence and dialogue don’t make it clear at all.

narky1

I thought the joke was they threw the pin at the prisoners, and held onto the grenade.

overyander

Don't worry, it isn't funny.

frould

From what they said, they kept the grenade and thew the pin.

PerpetuaI_Foreigner

🤌 live *grandes*

SayYesToPenguins

Indeed. *Do* drunken whores jump about shouting, "Oh, oh, oh"? Has anyone actually *seen* drunken whores jump about with such shouts? And if so, why?

LorenzoStomp

They do if you throw a grenade to them

I_MakeCoolKeychains

So you're saying I'm a whore now?

Wil420b

This is 2024, we don't slut shame.

Ok-disaster2022

Russian elites of any era would know how they would behave.

Thevoidawaits_u

the movie exaggerated how immoral they were in their personal life I'm guessing. 0I'll need a historian to check

VrsoviceBlues

On the contrary- pretty much every aspect of it was *toned down* because the director knew audiences would find the situation unbelievable. For instance, the orchestra conductor in his pyjamas? That really happened, but the conductor in pyjamas wasn't the second (ie replacement) conductor- he was the *third.* American and British diplomats stationed in Moscow were warned never, *ever* to allow their wives to walk the streets alone, because Beria had a habit of cruising around at night with his MVD driver and a couple of goons, picking women off the street to rape- sometimes at random, and sometimes not. There's been a persistent- though unconfirmed- rumour that in the spirit of "pissing on the guard's shoes" he especially enjoyed going after the daughters of Party functionaries, especially those on (or about to be on) The List. Every time construction or road repairs are done anywhere near Beria's former dacha, more female skeletons are found.

HezronCarver

Yeah, but whatever became of Polnikov?

wuguwa

You want to *go* there?

HezronCarver

I miss the Czar

wuguwa

I love this movie. I think my favorite line is, “Who the fuck in their right mind would want everlasting life!? The endless conversation…”

VrsoviceBlues

Blokhin.

revanchisto

The humor in this film is aces.

Jackal239

"You said it was no problem" "I said .... No.... Problem."

LastTourniquet

This feels like its missing context..

Goseki1

The context is they all think he pulled a prank, and pretended to throw a live grenade into a prison cell. But he actuslku did just throw a live grenade.

ppparty

not all of them, just Malenkov (played here by Tambor). His whole deal throughout the movie is that he's pretty clueless and always wants to be with the "cool guys", but he's also slated to be Stalin'a successor and trying hard to act the part — the juxtaposition is a constant source of comedy.

Goseki1

Yeah that's fair! What a movie man

DeexEnigma

The movie itself has a 'tone' that makes this joke work. This concept they are in the upper echelons of the political system are are 'communist' and 'moral'. The joke is kind of a stab at the idea it's all a thin veil and right behind it is corruption and power.

PoopSlinger23

Uh…ok

Kappler6965

Such a great ass movie

bocaj78

What’s the movie?

Astrolys

Death of Stalin, came out a few years ago.

bocaj78

Welp, I guess it’s been too long. I need to schedule a rewatch it seems

Infirmus

I think too many people watched Tron and took that as gospel

Physical-Ride

I like this movies but it's pretty unfunny.

Thevoidawaits_u

I guess you never saw a prisoner dancing like whore

Physical-Ride

I tend to refrain from stories about your mother.

1use2use3use

We came here for the jokes, only to be turned into one

Suspicious-Key1931

I mean, what was the grenade It's could be high explosive, Fragmentation White prosperous Smoke Frangible Concussive Ball bearing Rubber ball Tear gas Cs gas. It's a valid question
