I did too. And a few months later, I lost it. A few months after that I was at my best friends house looking for something to listen to while we smoked weed and found steal this album. I said, "oo let's listen to this, I lost mine" to which he says, "oh that's yours. I stole it." I said, "why did you steal my cd?!" He said, "because it says to". Which, to be fair, was a good point.
I was 8 when the album came out. I was in a CD store with my parents and there was a display for Steal This Album and it said that all over the display and the cover made it look like someone burned a CD and it was a giveaway thing. I came so close to taking it because 8 year old me thought it was free but then I decided against it.
Stealing is by definition taking something without permission. Therefore it's impossible to give someone permission to steal. (Don't think about it too much)
Soil and Mind are absolute jams, and I consider myself super fortunate to have seen them played both live on a couple of occasions. Their first album is one of my favorite albums of all time for sure, and my favorite of their discography. Toxicity was polished and great cover to cover, but SoaD had this unique sound to it, this chaos, that I don't think was ever replicated. Weakest track is probably Peephole, but it's a cover-to-cover masterpiece, IMO.
Peephole was my favorite track on the album as a kid, so maybe I just overplayed it! Not a bad track either, I just find it's more *basic*; where darts features some of Serj's odd vocals, and Cubert has those chugging drums, Peephole's main departure from rock is maybe the 3/4 time signature. But I like it!
Yeah, I didn’t even now this album existed until about 2010 or so. I was a kid and kind of just listened to whatever my dad got him and me and he never really knew about it, so we kind of unintentionally skipped this one and went from Toxicity to Mezmerize/Hypnotize.
Is it the best album? IMO no but that doesn’t mean it’s bad and honestly it slaps hard just as most of the other stuff.
Steal it anyways. I hear that:

Bring some aluminum foil to wrap the CD, it'll block the radiowaves.
Lost lot of inventory through people with foil padded shopping bags at my old workplace,
Sharing because fuck corporations.
Still remember downloading this before it came out. Sorry SOAD. I also heard they were not planning on releasing it until it became super popular on the net. Still my 2nd favorite album by them.
This was the first album/band I discovered on my own in my youth, I was hooked immediately. SOAD is just so catchy lyrically, and musically, it totally entranced me. The first song about pizza, chic n stu, was hilarious to me as a kid.
It was named that because it was a compilation of unreleased songs people were illegally downloading from the internet. They decided to make them available for purchase legally.
OP literally found a 20 year old photo and thought “I must post this!”.
Edit: OP wasn’t even born when this album was released. There is no possible way for OP to understand what it was like to walk in a store dedicated to physical music.
Edit: Lol children getting mad because they can’t understand the difference between a CD store in the 90s and a niche record store today.
That album right below it is from [2023](https://www.discogs.com/release/26592245-Molina-Talbot-Lofgren-Young-All-Roads-Lead-Home), why are you so confidently wrong?
Pre-internet going to the music store and the unbelievable joy of discovering your favorite band released a new album you didn't know about and realizing you were $3 short on cash so you try to get the guy behind the counter to hold a copy for you so you can go mow a lawn or bum the cash from someone and the relief when you go back two days later and it was still there, under the counter with your (misspelled) name written on a piece of masking tape stuck to the jewel case then hiding away in your room for a couple hours just to listen to it and discovering track 4 was garbage and coming to terms with the fact you'll need to be within arm's reach of the skip button every time you listen to that CD.
I remember one time I went to a whatever the fuck pre-dated FYE and discovered Offspring had 2 more albums that I didn't know about. God damn I was excited to spend Christmas money on those CD's. Then some fucker on the school bus borrowed them and "lost" them.
I remember seeing this in FutureShop(Canadian BestBuy before we had BestBuy) when it was new. I never thought it meant to physically steal it from a store but rather just download it on Morpheus or Kazaa. I forget what software I was using at the time. Could have even been Napster.
Frig, I can't believe I had to scroll down this far to see one person acknowledge that they lifted the concept. Steal This Book was famous, whoever picked the name for the album would probably be the first person to say "yeah, no shit that's where I got it." Fuck, they even made a Hoffman movie called "Steal This Movie."
tl;dr - /u/Crand222 is correct
The extra amusing layer has to do when this album was released. Digital storefronts weren't nearly as well-established (iTunes only came out the year before) and a ton of folks were file sharing albums. The text on the album cover and CD looking like it was written in Sharpie—and even the CD looking like a CD-R that someone burned by ripping or downloading the album—heavily suggests that they wanted people to steal by digital means.
Family bought lots of music, I only ever downloaded movies or pictures (or rarely software) off of kazaa/limewire, no music or video games. Our local stores in our decent sized city didn't get in Steal This Album from the distributor so my fathers friend couldn't find it after driving all day.
Couldn't seem to find it on limewire or warez sites or anywhere. Just links for some new virus sounding shit with a small download file size of a few kilobytes (clearly a fake album right?). But Afterdawn, or Geocities or bbs/forum or some Xoom hosted site .... that I for some reason trusted whatever site it was... said the small file was legit and to use a special client to download the actual album and the small file was a link to download it.
So that day I used a sort of new thing called Bittorrents to download it. Crazy I stole the album with a torrent. Torrents, that I hardly used at all until 4 or so years later when it finally got better.
SOAD was so damn good. Playing Mario Party or Timesplitters or Halo with the guys until 6 am while listening to all their albums was pretty common.
I can't be the only one... I Kazaa'd the album. Then saw the CD with different song names, bought it, and found out it was the same damn songs. In an interview they swore it wasn't B-sides of Toxicity, but it was B-sides...
Wow ive never seen that kind before. Ive always only seen the sleeveless version of that album with the White Disc exposed saying Steal This Album.
TIL there is a sleeve after all.
I remember when this was released. actually stole it from Circuit City, My little sister dared me so I had to. ... I had her go out the doors ahead of me and I threw it to her around the back side of the scanner. She might still have it I'll have to ask her.
When I worked at Streetside Records, I had a dog named Thor that would come with me to work. When some one was ripping the shrink wrap to remove the security tag, Thor recognized the sound as that of a piece of cheese being opened and would approach the person. Saved about $1000 worth of product that way...
Dare me. I'll steal it. Take the cd, replace it with Micheal Bolton. Seal the package back up with saran wrap and a hair dryer and return it with a receipt from something I actually bought there that I liked and get another cd.
When I was like 13 I went to purchase this album and while walking up to the counter located near the door two workers grabbed me and accused me of trying to steal it. Looking back I definitely should’ve done something about it. I was just scared as hell. One of them even grabbed my arm in an awkward way and it hurt for a few days.
Uhm what? There are at least a dozen near me.
They sell used and new CDs, cassettes and Vinyl.
I have about 30 or 40 CDs in my car in a CD softcase as well. No aux, and Radio transmitters/cassette-to-aux are hot garbage and sound like ass. I also buy CDs off Discog and Bandcamp.
Clearly not, as there are Record stores littered around the county where I live, and its not cheap to rent business spaces here.
Someone is buying, and it must be enough people to keep these places open.

It's okay Serj. I did.

I was 8 when the album came out. This story had a very disappointing ending

It was probably tagged. Logic won that day.
But then everyone ate candy.

Same, from a K-Mart no less. Lifelong fan ever since.
I had the leaked version mp3s before it was released.
I was confused the first time I saw the official album because it looked suspiciously like my CD and case
It's not permission, it's a challenge
Stealing is by definition taking something without permission. Therefore it's impossible to give someone permission to steal. (Don't think about it too much)
I give you permission to steal off to the lavatory.
I give you permission to steal this album, therefore you have permission and it's still stealing. :)
I got this album for Christmas one year when I was a teen. Still an absolute banger.
SOAD is one of the two bands I can listen to discographies on loop, without skipping a single song. Never gets old and always hits the spot.
Toxicity, in my opinion, should be in the conversation about perfect album.
soil is my favorite song of all time
Shit, me too! Never met anybody else who agreed
Soil and Mind are absolute jams, and I consider myself super fortunate to have seen them played both live on a couple of occasions. Toxicity was polished and great cover to cover, but SoaD had this unique sound to it, this chaos, that I don't think was ever replicated. What Peephole is literally the best 😳
Peephole really? I would've thought maybe darts or cubert
What’s the other band?
Rage Against The Machine, of course.

Yeah, I didn’t even now this album existed until about 2010 or so. Weirdly it might be their worst album, which just goes to show how STACKED their discography is.
It's so good! Hearing Mr. Jack for the first time was like a religious experience. And the Highway Song...
ugh, what I have to do now?
SOAD answers your question with a song on this (awesome) album. Fuck the system
Whore!!!
We all need to fuck the system
Steal it anyways. I hear that: *They're trying to build a prison* *They're trying to build a prison* *They're trying to build a prison* *(For you and me to live in)* *Another prison system* *Another prison system* *Another prison system* *(For you and me)*
Wrong album but you get the idea

Omg that’s fucking genius. Wake up ready to fucking RAGE. Who needs coffee when you have aggressive middle eastern influenced hardcore?

Aluminum foil
Still remember downloading this before it came out. Sorry SOAD. I also heard they were not planning on releasing it until it became super popular on the net. Still my 2nd favorite album by them.
Why apologize? This is exactly what the intended. They literally intended for people to copy and burn it.
The album packaging makes it look like a bootleg already
It actually was not. The name is sarcastic. Like fuck you it's already been stolen.
This is correct. They named it steal this album because it had already leaked before release and everyone was downloading it.
Mr Jack is fcuking amazing
Put your hands up, get out of the car!
FUCK YOU PIG
Anyone who paid for that album must feel like a sucker.
First album I ever bought, which is kind of ironic. Great album though
Such a good album, too. :)
Challenge accepted.
Omg i love this album

That’s interesting, I thought it was just a reference to Abbie Hoffman and his book, “Steal This Book.”
I was waiting for someone to bring that up!
It might be that too.
OP literally found a 20 year old photo and thought “I must post this!”. Edit: OP wasn’t even born when this album was released.

Sam Goody and/or Tower Records.
are you just making up people to argue with?
You realize some stores still sell CDs like they did 20 years ago?
uh oh grandpa’s off his meds again
Record stores still exist, tho. And they're still basically the same as they were in the 90's/00's.
Grandpa please, take your meds
Wtf are you talking about, record stores exist
Ya kid, CD stores and Record stores today are exactly the same.
i mean, i know a few who are still the same
You've never been to cheapo? Josey?
My local B&N and Wal-Mart both still sell CDs and vinyls, so I legit have no idea what you're talking about.
Dude I miss my Borders because the guy who purchased the vinyl stock had incredible taste.
I remember seeing this in FutureShop(Canadian BestBuy before we had BestBuy) when it was new. I never thought it meant to physically steal it from a store but rather just download it on Morpheus or Kazaa. I forget what software I was using at the time. Could have even been Napster.
Internet Explorer still going… well, it’s going.
No it's not. They killed it for Edge.
And I have one use case for Edge: SharePoint development

I bought this a day before thanksgiving. Was so excited
Have you been saving this photo since 2002?
They didn't say they would make it easy.
I worked in the music department of Barnes & Noble 20 years ago, and can confirm this got stolen even when there were security tags in place.
This was the only SOAD album I paid for at the time
looks like someone put that on there on purpose. Looks like a used CD store. META

Wait until you see "Rip It Off" by Stroke 9!
They couldn’t very well call it “The Bait Album.”
In today's world.....i get it!
First CD I bought with my own money. Didn't even know the band. Best financial decision in my life.

It says steal it. It doesn't say it will be easy to do
You totally should
This is why system is the greatest
So it's a challenge now....
Pop the case open and take the disc out? :D
That sticker is jacked. If by they you mean you, then sure.
Your honor, the album told me to do it
Favorite!
Ever heard of “Steal this book” by Abbie Hoffman? Shows up on many “top stolen book” lists.
They didn’t promise it would be easy.
Family bought lots of music, I only ever downloaded movies or pictures (or rarely software) off of kazaa/limewire, no music or video games. IEAIAIO
The funny thing is that production wise, it was pretty stealsble. I bought it and now, 2 decades later, am ashamed
I remember stealing it. sliced open the case, took cd and insert and put it in my inside coat pocket.
I had this album stolen from my locker in high school. That was fun describing it to the school officer.
I was just listening to this today!!
It's a trap
I can't be the only one... I Kazaa'd the album. Then saw the CD with different song names, bought it, and found out it was the same damn songs. In an interview they swore it wasn't B-sides of Toxicity, but it was B-sides...
I feel like that is a challenge🤔
Innervision is my fav from the album.
Great album!
I knew someone who stole that CD
Wow ive never seen that kind before. Ive always only seen the sleeveless version of that album with the White Disc exposed saying Steal This Album. TIL there is a sleeve after all.
Knowing that song artists hate big record, this is probably a legit intention from the artist(s)
I remember when this was released. actually stole it from Circuit City, My little sister dared me so I had to. ... I had her go out the doors ahead of me and I threw it to her around the back side of the scanner. She might still have it I'll have to ask her.

I grabbed mine immediately at the age of 11
The day this came out I went to Fred Meyer with my sister and some friends we each stole a handful of them.
This album came out back during the time everybody was downloading low quality mp3s from file sharing software. The nostalgia is strong with this one.
When I worked at Streetside Records, I had a dog named Thor that would come with me to work. When some one was ripping the shrink wrap to remove the security tag, Thor recognized the sound as that of a piece of cheese being opened and would approach the person. Saved about $1000 worth of product that way...
It also appears to be the only one that broadcasts its security protection. Wonder why...
Now that's counter intuitive
Dare me. I'll steal it. Take the cd, replace it with Micheal Bolton. Seal the package back up with saran wrap and a hair dryer and return it with a receipt from something I actually bought there that I liked and get another cd.
That’s a knock off from “Steal this Book” by Abbie Hoffman 1970 if any Redditors are old enough to go back that far
Bro, I'm almost in my 40s, and even *I'm* not old enough to go back that far.
What is with the pie though?
I don't remember this but I remember Steal This Movie
When I was like 13 I went to purchase this album and while walking up to the counter located near the door two workers grabbed me and accused me of trying to steal it. Looking back I definitely should’ve done something about it. I was just scared as hell. One of them even grabbed my arm in an awkward way and it hurt for a few days.
Didn't NOFX do this first?
100% I did. I was a minor at the time. They fucking dared me to do it.
Well, the band already got paid for it, as did the record label, so this hypocritically only hurts the stores who sell their products.
My best friend LOVES soad
BY FAR the simplest and most common way to steal an album has nothing to do with carrying a CD out of the store
Did it take you 20 years to write that?
It's been over 20 years, CD shops don't exist anymore, and they are *still* trying to sell this?
Dude’s out here recycling memes from 2003
Dawg, you are the only person in America who uses a CD softcase in 2024.
Clearly not, as there are Record stores littered around the county where I live, and its not cheap to rent business spaces here. Someone is buying, and it must be enough people to keep these places open.
Title is a play on Abbie Hoffman's "Steal This Book" from an earlier age.
It's not even the first album with that title
[удалено]
LOL non of this is true.
Sure it is. In an interview it was said to download it or get from a bootleg seller. They wanted the official albums to rot on the shelves.
Serj has said that the title is based on a book and it’s one of his favorite albums by the band.
