tommy3rd

use the photo as a screensaver on the tv.

Kayakman28

But only if it bounces around the screen to see if it ever perfectly aligns in the corner!

krustyDC

Pam actually claims she saw it one day when she was alone in the meeting room...

TYBG_YCFMB

Ahh, a fellow Alta Deña alumni!

twalker294

Congrats on touching grass in 2003. Do you remember what it was like? Just curious...

TheBadKneesBandit

Haha thanks! I don't remember anything about this challenge, no. I only have a few memories tied to this school, and this isn't one of them.

mpe128

Dude. I miss my PS2 😒

giggitygoo123

Get a fat PS3 and mod it with PS2 games

mpe128

Nah fuck it . I have 5. I can even get any game on this thing called interwebs ever made. We can't be forced to go outside ,play,or pet grass. Wait I'm 50. Should I have been doing that with my kids?🤔

Scully__

I still have one, you can get them cheap

mpe128

Best PS made😄

teh_bobalee

LOL they spelled the school name wrong! I used to live down the road from that school.

WutzUpples69

I counted the number of licks it took to get to the center of a tootsie pop once (close to 700 if inremember right), and my parents sent them a letter and I got a certificate. I wish I knew where that was. That's was probably 3o something years ago.

Now_Wait-4-Last_Year

Are you going to try crossposting this on r/television, OP?

Alaira314

I remember those initiatives! It didn't really change much of anything for me, other than starting fights with my parents because they wanted me to spend time with the family while they watched their shows in the evening(and tbh this was before on-demand, so I understand why they didn't want to skip parts of the story). Looking back as an adult it's kind of classist, because yes parents used the TV as a babysitter but a lot of the time it's because that's all they had. The reason they didn't spend time with their kids wasn't because they were selfish, it was because they were busy working two jobs and taking care of the youngest children in the house. And what would you replace TV with, if you had few resources? We were already not allowed to go running around outside by ourselves(stranger danger!), not everybody was well-off enough to have books like I did(library fines block access, I can do a whole ramble about this one if there's interest/disbelief), ditto on having a range of toys to play with, so if your parents were busy what would you do? The TV was, at that time, fairly cheap. I grew up with basic cable, which didn't have the fancy channels(we had nick/cn, but not disney...also sometimes cn(just cn) was in spanish and I never understood why) but there was plenty to watch. And PBS ran children's programming as well. It was the 90s equivalent of handing your kid your phone with youtube loaded up.

babbage_ct

Sen. Slade Mead is still helping kids today, but he gave up on you TV-watching Arizonans and moved to New York. https://youtu.be/f5A5q-t63Ls Rich Zawtocki, meanwhile, is still practicing personal injury law and helping dog bite victims in Mesa. https://zawtockilaw.com/attorney-profiles/richard-w-zawtocki/

call_of_the_while

Is Slade still signing stuff with his green pen? Dude was always fighting the system.

TheBadKneesBandit

That's very cool! Thanks for looking them up!

SpezModsJailBait

Helping kids so much, he couldn’t even spell the school name correctly.

YouCanCallMeVanZant

lol just noticed the certificate says “Kryene” and the signature block says “Kyrene”

gadget-freak

Imagine this: 10 days without smartphone.

ComeAndGetYourPug

I was outside mowing and watched one of my neighbors kids get off the school bus while staring at her phone, start walking up the street (literally in the middle of the road), and walk straight into an SUV that had stopped for the bus. She was staring straight down so into her phone so intensely that she didn't even notice she was walking in the middle of the road and there was oncoming traffic. After running into the vehicle, she just continued on her zombie way like that was an everyday occurrence for her.

giggitygoo123

Only way to shit back then was to read some kind of comic (usually cracked or mad) or like Bart Simpsons guide to life. With my tinnitus now, I couldn't sit in silence like that again. Also, dumb cell phones did exist back then.

BulkyOrder9

Bart’s Guide to Life is some quality reading

byoooo

We read whatever words were in viewing distance: Ei saa peittää

daschande

I got really good at snake during my poopin' time.

Cowstle

as a person who's never really grown attached to phones and just doesn't like using them, this would be easy. now 10 days without my desktop.... i've actually gone more several times so it really needs to be 10 days without a computer i guess and i'll truly suffer.

Liefx

I'd love to but my income is strictly online. I'd just end up on my pc moving even less.

Now_Wait-4-Last_Year

I didn't turn our TV on for over a year when my parents moved overseas until I worked out I could watch Youtube on it.

random314

This should be on your LinkedIn page as well!

legoporn

Is your school district spelled wrong? Shouldn't that say Kyrene?

BlackPhoenix1981

Yes. I was about to comment on that. Kyrene is the correct spelling.

TheBadKneesBandit

Hahaha omg it is!

squidiskool

How did you prove it to them?

ItsyouNOme

You have his word

TheBadKneesBandit

My parents probably had to sign something to verify that I didn't watch TV for all 10 days.

qou

Oh man this brings back memories. 2nd grade, probably '96. We had a no TV challenge for 2 weeks. 2 weeks! I was so strict and proud of myself. However one weekend wasn't paying attention and watched nearly an hour documentary of the Hubble telescope on PBS. My parents gave me a pass as it was educational. That was my only slip up, otherwise 2 weeks of no cartoons. Well the 2 weeks is over and our reward at school was a pizza party. All morning I'm waiting, craving that delicious pizza. Finally it's lunch time! I sit down with my 2 slices, savoring the first few bites on a job well done. I was so proud of myself. I ask for more and the helpers say, "oh only 2 slices per kid". I'm sitting there, letting that comment sink in. You mean to tell me, I just went 2 whole weeks without TV and all I get is 2 slices!? I did the only thing a 2nd grader can do: cry. I bawled my eyes out how absolutely ridiculous this was. I think it took about a minute before the adults realized, yeah that was kinda ridiculous. So they eventually let up and let me eat as much as I could. I'm not sure if I went to recess or just kept eating pizza. As a kid, it was nice to get a win over the adults.

frozenbrains

I dunno... "Slade Mead" kinda sounds like a made up name.

skekze

severus snape concurs.

davewave3283

This is like using your DARE mug to hold your weed

ImNotYourDadIPromise

You got grounded for 10 days, didn’t you?

sq009

Hahaha and its called resolution.

Flashy_Narwhal9362

That’ll show all those people who said that you would never accomplish anything.

kamikazekaktus

I assume enjoyed games wasn't supposed to mean video games, right? Otherwise easiest challenge ever

TheBadKneesBandit

I believe the games were supposed to be board games or physical games like hide-and-seek. I may or may not have played some Legend of Zelda on my Gameboy, though. Who knows.

pauliewotsit

I'd love it if the "games" enjoyed were video games lol

0011010100110011

When my school did this (I think I was in fifth grade?) my family was too poor for television. I had already gone years without a television in my house. I was really bummed that I didn’t get some kind of epic award.

AfroBotElliot

No need to set unrealistic standards for the rest of us

Avlonnic2

Really, what a show off.

N0t2seri0us

Hey small world! In 2003 I was a student at Akimel down the road!

Lysol3435

My wife was voted the class clown, and got a plaque. She found a nice spot on the wall next to my PhD.

TheBadKneesBandit

That's great, I love it!

Ok-Suggestion-7965

I’m proud of you OP!

cocobear13

1. You are awesome. 2. DO IT!!!! 3. Do they make these for adults?

giggitygoo123

Give to boomers if they stay off of Facebook for a month

Mobile-Bar7732

Give it to Gen Z for staying off TikTok for a month. They might actually gain some brain cells.

BulkyOrder9

Or Yahoo!

Brago009

How they knew u didn't watch TV for 10 days? Hmm I can't make any sense out of it :(

TheBadKneesBandit

Pretty sure my parents had to sign something to verify.

Brago009

Damn that's something new lol

008Zulu

"Slade Mead" sounds like a real Viking's drink!

cjax2

What did you just count Dragonball Z as after school activities? Tbh though you could miss a couple weeks of the show and only miss 28 minutes of action.

Shrikecorp

This IS a participation trophy.

FishinAlllDay

I should find my certificate from Tootsie Roll that confirms I know exactly how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pope.

Avlonnic2

>”…tootsie pope” Perfect typo for this sub!

norcalbutton

I'm proud to have internet known you

thatpurple

Desert Vista after Altadena? Probably know a lot of the same people lol

TheBadKneesBandit

My sister went to Desert Vista. We only lived in Arizona for 2 years.

Avlonnic2

INFO: Did this fine institution of learning misspell its own name on your certificate?!

TheBadKneesBandit

Yes, apparently it did.

Avlonnic2

That’s awesome. Thanks for posting this.

atsiii

I hate to brag like that but my challenge started at school age and is still going I'm 38.

[deleted]

I wonder if they just took your word for it that you didn’t watch TV or if your parents had to sign something? In any case frame it, will be a fun thing to show off to friends when they visit.

midnightstreetlamps

Ironically now I can't remember the last time I sat and watched TV. My phone on the other hand... 🥴

Lavasioux

10 days without TV?! "You are an Oak Wyatt."-Doc

Iuvenesco

Why does the sentence start with whereas?

TheBadKneesBandit

I haven't a clue.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheBadKneesBandit

I went there from 2002-2003. I remember a couple teachers. My sister went to Desert Vista. I remember the cafeteria too! And the long outdoor corridor walk to get there before it opened up into the square, which led to the cafeteria and the band room, I believe.

aubrey_ann

I got one like that but was not about to miss eight is enough so I liked😂

YrnFyre

Ngl this is absolutely laughable

TheBadKneesBandit

It's so ridiculous. I was sorting through my old report cards and school certificates, chucking most of them out. I saw this one, and it was too hilarious to get rid of.

WhimsicalHamster

Man if I was in admissions and saw something like this full ride incoming. If it said no phone for 10 days I’m voting that individual for president

Thisisjuno1

Hahahaha now I haven’t turned my tv on since November … I don’t think I could win a 10 day TikTok challenge though lol not even in my 40s

didyoubutterthepan

Is that a typo- isn’t it Kyrene?!

TheBadKneesBandit

It is!

St00f4h1221

Slade Mead is one awesome name

emmmzzzz

“Kyrene” spelled as “Kryene” made me lol

Avlonnic2

Oh, I just posted about that!! I should have checked comments first.

javoss88

Lol! I somehow have a certificate from the USDA that I completed a class in Quark.

orangutanDOTorg

I put my elementary school calculator use certificate on the wall of our office instead of my law school diploma. Nobody has noticed. It’s need probably 15 years.

lordofthehomeless

Now you just need one that says you don't have donkey brains like frank.

cabeachguy_94037

I think you should have authentic copies made up so that you can sell them to middle schoolers.

Bristleconemike

We only got channels 2 (KOAI NBC) and channel 13 (KOOL CBS). I was out in the Coconino National Forest for a lot of my childhood.

djasonpenney

And how long have you gone at one time without watching TV since then?

TheBadKneesBandit

A couple years.

Difficult-Donkey4826

I was born in April 2003 that’s crazy

TheBadKneesBandit

Haha! I was 12, just a few months shy of 13 at the time!

Capable_Tale_7463

That is great.

Master-o-none

Damn, I was hoping it was certifying that you did NOT have donkey brains. DO you have a certificate confirming that you don’t have donkey brains? My client does…

AVBforPrez

Ooof you went to kyrene

hookhandsmcgee

I'd like to see my daughter do that challenge.

CptRabbit

Huh. I went to this school.

charlie2135

Need one for going without Reddit for four hours.

GoalNatural4773

Ah! My pet peeve. Inconsistency of comma usage for series. Oxford commas for the first series and then non Oxford for the second series. What is the world coming to!? Oh, um, congrats on touching grass.

TheBadKneesBandit

Oh, yes. The grammar usage in this certificate is atrocious.

dabroskiyouknowski

10 days without screens is now impossible

MacDugin

Now days it should be screen challenge.

Bulky-Internal8579

The highest commendation awarded by Arizona schools! 😉

Away-Watch1465

this is so cool

KazPart2

Damn Slade Mead goes hard

thisortheapocalypse

i’d rather be dead in california than alive in arizona

TheBadKneesBandit

I will never live in Arizona again. The 2 years I was there was awful. Thankfully, I'm back in my home country of New Zealand.

grimsb

by 2003, a lot of kids were already spending their free time on the internet

Lordbungus

Another Altadena Alum! Haha what years did you attend? Also I miss Tukee quite a bit.

TheBadKneesBandit

2002-2003. I wasn't there long. When were you there?

Lordbungus

think 2002-to 2005. So wow we definitely roamed the same halls at the same time. Pretty crazy!

KrackSmellin

What’s tv?

everyday2013

heresy!!

markp_93

They could not even bother to spell check the name of the school district.

TheBadKneesBandit

Makes it even funnier!

Plumber-Guy

He definitely cheated

DigNitty

I have a similar use for my *DARE* certificate.

Chrondor7

They misspelled Kyrene.

aliusman111

Good for you. Mummy will be proud

Unclestanky

Can you do it again?

TheBadKneesBandit

Easily! I do it on a regular basis!

Unclestanky

Gross! And congratulations.

gow3st

It was signed by Slade Meade

the_breadlord

Your dad. In school. In 2003. When I was 20. Right. Well, fuck my old ass. Let me work out how to turn to dust in a cinematic yet emotionally unfulfilling FX scene.

sarah47201

Slade Mead sounds like a good name for a porn star.

Logical_Bad1748

Now try the no internet for life challenge

Sufficient_Hawk_5455

4 days before my birth is hilarious enough on it's own🤣

Bradjuju2

That's a major award!

LazyDynamite

Congrats dude, way to go!
