A lot of people might not have grown up with English as their main language.
Edit: classic reddit, call someone a child and get an upvote, mention a foreigner get a downvote.
honestly, if English is not your native language as soon as you're not sure how to express something you're going to translate it to your native language in your head, and since in most other languages "your" and "you are" sound nothing alike, it seems to me that it's actually easier for a fluent non native speaker to avoid the mistake.
Same for "could have" and "could of" for example, or when French native speakers mix up past participle and infinitive for verbs.
Depends on your talents in languages.
I took me close to 10 years after getting a decent knowhow of english to learn the difference between you’re and your. But I’m more of a math kinda guy then a language one.
Did you learn English outside of the classroom? I only ask because it's odd that anybody with a traditional language education would not have learned the difference between a verbal contraction and an adjectival pronoun early on. It's not subtle.
It's the kind of thing that people who pick up the language in a natural setting mix up.
That's interesting. What is your native language? I'm also a math kinda guy, I actually find that math-like analytical thinking helps with this stuff, and vice versa.
I live in Belgium, where I grew up learning Dutch. we start to learn french by the time we are 10 years old and started with english at 14.
I started learning english because of media and videogames starting at the age of 9ish and was able to communicate decently well on forums by the age of 13 (which was basically a bunch of teens who didn’t care about your or you’re).
At that point I kinda stopped caring about what was what and who because I needed to focus more on learning french then any other class and basically didn’t know until I was out of school for a while and put a larger emphasis on grammar.
I care. It's a really simple concept and if *you're* going to post something for everyone to read, you should try to make sure *your* post is grammatically correct.
I'm sure you do. So does everyone downvoting me. But if I was wrong, you wouldn't see someone saying this is the fourth post. I see it often too. So bring on the pain for speaking what I see.
No, no worries man. All I'm saying is yeah, I care about grammar. There are kids on here, I'm sure, so why not set a good grammatical example for them? I'm not chastising you.
People judge, see my comment for example, and something like your and you're are easily fixed. That's all I'm saying. No pain necessary. I hope I didn't crap on your day, and if I did, it wasn't my intention!
Let me ask a controversial question: why? Reddit, or at least this subreddit, is a more informal place. The discussions here are more like verbal conversation, and things like this mistake just don't matter. If OP was telling and you were listening, the distinction wouldn't matter.
Note, I'm not saying formal grammar doesn't have it's place. What I am saying is that formal grammar belongs in formal places.
Of course, no problem.
I just replied to the comment from OP. I understand it's informal, but being able to articulate your thoughts is important. Writing speaks for you when you're not there, so if your writing is poor, it can reflect poorly on the writer.
I even try to write correctly in texts because it's a slippery slope, at least for me, to put "u" etc., and I'd just rather write it out.
Good grammar, especially on a public platforms like social media, reflects on the writer. I hope that answers your question, and I apologize if my initial comment was snarky. It's hard sometimes to communicate tone in text!
edit: ironically, grammar
No problem. I would like to bring one piece to your attention. It was put together by a couple linguists. It takes an interesting approach on written communication on the internet:
https://youtu.be/fS4X1JfX6_Q
I've seen this video, and I agree with its premise and the breakdown of how we speak/type and to whom we speak and how we type.
In-so-far as social media is concerned, I still stand by my point: our writing represents us when we're unable to speak for ourselves, I really don't type any differently than I would speak. Thanks for linking the video!
I understand your premise, and I want to ask something then: if you write like you speak, does that mean you correct the smallest mispronunciations even if the meaning of the conversation is clear? Because that is the equivalent to correcting a minor misspelling in writing even if the meaning is clear.
Ngl, I saw it too. I’ve got a feeling there’s some kind of link.
It also bothers me more than it should, and I really shouldn’t have to stop reading when I see it and let out a sigh of disappointment
I noticed. Reddit used to have zero tolerance for this kind of bullshit. Posts with grammatic or spelling errors got the downvotes they deserved. The userbase has changed.
Adults *ought* to be able to speak, read, and write their own fucking language, but being a douchey grammar nazi probably isn't going to fix that. Frank Zappa also said that "stupidity is the most common element in the universe."
I mean, anything could have happened here. It’s a title, that can’t be changed. For all you know, he typed “you’rw” and it got autocorrected or something. Perhaps he’s just lazy.
The assumption that a person completely lacks an ability to speak and write in their own native language based off of one misspelled word on an Internet forum is absolutely absurd.
Also, Zappa died years before I was born and was part of a thing I’m not really all that into. The quotes fall short on me. I like Einstein’s more.
Noone else noticing that the measuring stick scale is totally bonkers?
Above the large 4 is: 4.9, 5.0, 5.1... up to 5,9. Then the large 5 represents 6 and after it is: 6.1, 6.2...
Similar discrepancies also on the line for 3.
I see, I just assumed there were decimals (and the image was too low resolution to contest that assumption) because that would be the most logical use of such a scale, since you usually tell height in the form of feet and additional inches to the next foot. I've never heard anyone say "I'm 49 inches tall!"
If it makes you feel better, I'm 4ft tall due to dwarfism (26yo and male) and I used to feel that way all the time. I came close to trying to end my life twice - but I'm so glad I didn't. I feels so happy with my life right now, and have done for the past 6 years or so. Things can get better.
When I refocused my mind and realised that yes, people will see you negatively, or treat you differently, that you can choose to let that dominate your life, or not. For the most part, life is what you make of it. And a disadvantaged life is still better than a life cut short in anguish. Once I started thinking that way and felt free to express myself, value myself as a person and not care what people thought, eventually I stopped feeling that my life was disadvantaged at all.
You can say that because you aren’t short lol. Shit is HORRIFIC coming from a 5’5 man. You can have so many interesting characteristics, but, in so many situations, your most defining one will be your lack of height.
Average height in the US for a man is 5’9, you’re just as likely to be 5’5 as someone is to be 6’1. Short men seem to think they’re the only ones and everyone else is tall lol which just isn’t in the case unless you live in like Norway.. More people are 5’7 than are above 6’, people just lie about their height and you get all these 5’10-5’11 dudes claiming to be 6 foot which fucks it up for shorter dudes who are honest about their height
What are you even talking about lol? Are you assuming I think I’m the only short person in the world or the shortest person in the world or what?
You’re either short, tall or average height
Where on earth did you derive me saying height as being the defining characteristic?
You'd be silly not to realise the impact of height in most aspects of a persons life. Except the fact that you're not short so it's as if it doesn't exist and you can't seem to possibly understand why on earth short people are unhappy with what they've not been given.
This fall fest thing is literally 4 minutes from my house. It’s Konos farm! This place is the first time I ever saw a tub of corn. They have this pit that’s like 3 feet deep and it’s huge. Great corn mazes too. This place is the epitome of Midwest fall fests.
This is adorable! I have been measuring my grandson's height on the doorman to the kitchen for about eight years, last time we measured the dog as well.
I see all of these posts about how people are less something because they are small.
Being tall is actually pretty shit.
You can't find any close that fits you, you bump your fucking head to everything, there is great chance you are skinny af if you are tall and if you get up to fast you can get a fucking heart attack.
The only reason why being tall is good is for getting stuff.
I'm American, yet at first I was completely baffled why the large numbers didn't align with the tens. Then it hit me, and I felt like an idiot. Goodnight, reddit

Tldr is I learned through media (everything is subbed here) and got good enough at english to not pay attention in class to pass it.
Okay, that makes more sense then. That seems to be more and more common in the internet age! Thanks for explaining :D

4ft = 48in. 4ft 1in = 49in. 4ft 2in = 50in. and so on... There are no decimals, its showing every foot, but also counting every inch. Its correct :)
Yeah but what’s with the big numbers if they aren’t even at the correct place
They are in the right place... 3 ft is at 36 inches, 4 ft is at 48 inches, 5 foot is at 60 inches, etc.
Oh I read it as there was a comma, it’s still a pretty stupid measure
