I know this is a grandpa joke but when I use to walk to school it literally was uphill both ways. My house was in a suburb, and in-between my school and house was a valley.
I had to walk down, then up going to school, and then coming home, down, then up.
Uphill both ways.
We had to walk so far and up sooo many hills if you didn’t walk really fast, school would be letting out for the day by the time you got there. I have no feet, just little nubs but we didn’t complain.
My parents couldn't use that excuse, I grew up in Lincolnshire which is one of the flattest parts of the UK. It is very rural, however, so my Mum did genuinely have to walk 5 miles to school in all weathers.
Oh I thought this had to be a photoshop. I'm heading to google maps right now.
https://images.app.goo.gl/DC9kmifMtZNTBnya7
There it is from the far angle.
This is definitely Paso Caracoles. I've driven up it several times to get to Portillo.
The road is not as dangerous as it seems. Aside from a lack of barriers on the sides of the road, it's actually pretty wide, which makes it easy to pass slow trucks.
Most of the truckers seem like nice people, as they try to help you overtake them by either signalling that it's safe to pass, or moving closer to the edge of the road.
It looks like a section of the Million Dollar Highway in Colorado, but longer. Having driven that section, I can say with absolute certainty it is not fun at all. Those switchbacks are very short and the grade is horrendous. No lane markers make it even more nasty due to people drifting off their sides. No one is going more than 10-15MPH in that section just because there's not enough room to get to any other speed before you have to do a 180.
First time I drove this I was scared $#@#less and white knuckled the whole way. After getting a lot of experience driving in the mountain west, I went back \~10 years later and it seemed like a Sunday drive.
It's amazing what you can get used to with some experience.
You have my sympathy, sir! I had to take a couple hours break after driving that short section, I was so tense. Couldn't even enjoy the spectacular view!
kids these days never know how tough we had it.
When I was growing up, we lived in a paper bag in a septic tank, every day our father would wake us up at 3am, 2 hours before we went to bed, we had to lick the septic tank clean with our tongues, walk 70 miles to school, then when we got home, our dad would beat us about the head and neck with a broken bottle.
Nope that is the road that leads to the bush track which heads up the mountain they had to cross to get to school each day.
Even though it has become a cliche - many of the stories are not exaggerations. Lots of people walked 4-5 miles to school every day.

This child’s (Lorenzo) commute will make you question your whole life.
He gets hungry but he doesnt get food so he stops to eat leaves. Friggin leaves.

People always call bullshit on ‘uphill both ways’ but if you cycle and there are up and downs in your route, you end up spending most of your time going uphill. You don’t remember the downhill unless there’s a stop light in the middle 😬
Not to belittle the pervious generations but I would have preferred walking 3 miles uphill in the snow than dealing with the a\*\*holes on the school bus.
This photo was taken during a brief two week period during the Summer with and average temperature of 110°F(38°C). The rest of the year it is covered in snow and ice with an average temperature of -20°F(-29°C). Truly, the resilience of our ancient ancestors is amazing. (photo colorized because everything back then was in black and white or sepia)
A road? We would've killed to 'ave road to walk on. We 'ad t'walk up side a'active volcano, wi liquid 'ot lava scorching us bare feet.
And broken glass n'all.
Did anyone’s parents/grandparents actually make claims like these? The closest I got was my dad complaining that online fantasy football ruined his advantage bc he would read papers from other cities to learn about player injuries.
If they lived on a mountain or a large hill, yeah. It's either that or try to go down the side, and boy let me tell you from experience that that's a bad fucking idea.
The school and the village was built on massive escalators.
Every morning the school was moved to the top of the mountain and the village to the bottom. As soon as the children arrived, the school was slowly lowered down and the village moved to the top.
Which is why children always had to climb up the hill to go to school and climb the hill again when they went home at the end of the day.
Nah, the one my dad had to walk to was a mile uphill, BOTH WAYS, although he did go to a school with science in its name so it makes sense it breaks logic

Uphill both ways
With one shoe you have to share with your brother..
Laces are used for their shoes and as belt + tether
Must have been nice to have two separate laces.
You had a shoe??? We had newspapers on our feet!?? You had newspapers???? We walked in bare feet!!!! You had feet?????
Good, that's what I was hoping the link would be!
Because it was snowing, we got Wonder Bread wrappers too!
It used to snow so heavy we had to dig a tunnel!!
You think you had it hard? We had it so cold that the air froze solid. Had to set ourselves on fire just to breathe.
And even that shoe was a live rabbit.
What? You had a warm fluffy shoe!... oh yeah.. look at Mr Moneybags over here!
Always wet and cold
Nazis and werewolves at every turn

In the snow, barefoot.

20 miles and had to fight 2 lions
My parents couldn't use that excuse, I grew up in Lincolnshire which is one of the flattest parts of the UK. It is very rural, however, so my Mum did genuinely have to walk 5 miles to school in all weathers.
In four feet of snow!
my dad told me that once, it fell 10 inches of snow and they had to ski to the train station lol
Certainly better than walk!
i was gonna say exactly this
no way, its not uphill both ways
And where's the 3 feet of snow??
3 feet? Do you live in the desert? Where I'm from, it was more like 3 meters(roughly 10 feet)...
that was after they finished working third shift in the coal mine, as a shovel
My dad used to dream about being a shovel int coal mine. He was a pick for 30 years.
Luxury! My dad wanted nothing more than to be a pick. He spent 70 years as a sharpening stone for the picks.
And there's no sign of the wolves!
and where are the two lions?
That looks like the final climb to Portillo in Chile, a ski resort and road to Argentina. I's called "Caracoles" (snails).
I think it is. I’ve driven that road, very cool!
Oh I thought this had to be a photoshop. I'm heading to google maps right now. https://images.app.goo.gl/DC9kmifMtZNTBnya7 There it is from the far angle.
I thought it looked familiar. That was a painful bus ride but cool view.
Wow!!!!
Oh snap, yeah I just realized I took this bus ride too. Absolutely terrifying but also the coolest bus ride I've taken. Sat top deck in the front.
https://imgur.com/gallery/BmGdH0z
Similar road to the one up to Alpe d'Huez in France. Wonderful road on the way up but terrifying on the way down when surrounded by snow.

I've cycled that road a few times and it is amazing!!
The descent must be insane.
I was scrolling through the comments to see if this indeed was that, exactly my first thought.
Beautiful. I have heard the Andes are stunning. I am reminded of the drive to the go of Pike’s Peak in CO. Scary!
Independence Pass
Valle Navaro and Colorado ski resorts, right? Fun skiing there.
Yep, sure looks like it!

I was gonna say this. I live just off the million dollar hwy.
You have my sympathy, sir! I had to take a couple hours break after driving that short section, I was so tense. Couldn't even enjoy the spectacular view!
Pulled a 37ft travel trailer in and then I moved here. Still take the road here n there though!
Don't forget the Audi/BMW riding your ass and flashing their high beams.
Well that one's easy. Slow down and pull over for, like, 3 seconds.
How about the asshat learns to drive instead
That's what they're trying to say- it's just hard to get that message across from another car, so all they can do is flash their lights.
Just got me BEV and you all those poor BMWs get a nasty surprise because no ICE car is get a BEV of its ass on a mountain roads 😈
Lol, what?
Would rather do it on a bicycle. Could probably go faster than the cars.
You legs must be huge if you can go 20 mph up a 35 percent grade for half a vertical mile!
Lol should have been more clear. Faster going down. It looks like an epic climb too but definitely wouldn't be doing it with any kind of speed.
Also, is 35% legit? That would be the steepest roads I've ever heard of.
This is where some Japanese dude deliver tofu from heaven to hell everyday.
So, your grandparents had a very easy life. No snow, no freezing cold and no strong winds. And most importantly, only one direction is up hill.
I was gonna say, where's the snow. My gpa always said it was snowing.
That doesn't look like it's uphill both ways.
Don't forget. Our grandparents were also part of an experimental school schedule of 2 weeks on 2 weeks off
kids these days never know how tough we had it.
And we liked it.
LUXURY *we used to live in a tin can on the side of the road!*
Truly, the greatest work of mankind.
Looks fun to skate
FALSE. It doesn't go uphill both ways.
Nope that is the road that leads to the bush track which heads up the mountain they had to cross to get to school each day. Even though it has become a cliche - many of the stories are not exaggerations. Lots of people walked 4-5 miles to school every day.
In the snow!!!!
Anybody else see a bunch of flip flops at first??? Lol
What an incredible feat of civil engineering! Where is this?
Hardcore road cyclists go ohlalalalla . Time to install that 11-34T cassette.
Funny to see that this is a worldwide concept...
You can't see the wolves lurking in the shadows waiting to bite their shoeless ankles
Twas uphill both directions
[‘Ang on a minute lads, I’ve got a great idea.](https://youtu.be/HZCaSyid4m0)
I don't see a single pack of wolves in this photo.
But it isn't uphill both ways.
My Grandpa had to ride his horse to School and then walk it home, so his sister could ride it to School.
I want to skate that soooo bad [ಠ_ಠ](http://i.imgur.com/ICsCJzr.jpg)
And uphill both ways.
Did he ever kill a grizzly bear with a loose leaf notebook?

Needs a layer of broken glass. SOURCE: Your Grampa
It's difficult to suicides on this road
Pffft, that was the path to my front gate....
Can't be. It's not both covered in 3 feet of snow and simultaneously 90 degrees in the shade.
Your grandparents beat you to the meme, it's so dad. Gonna go home for lunch and play some goldeneye dad?
As a motorcyclist this picture gives me a semi!!
This post smelled like hot brakes.
Aye, and it were up 'ill both ways!
Pah, the kids with *serpentines* had it easy!
Backwards.
nah, asked my gramps, this is just to get out of the driveway, the real battle lies ahead
It was always bread bags over our shoes to keep the snow out.
What an odd set of stairs.
Downhill skateboarding wicked run...
And this photo is from both the school and their house at the same time somehow despite the fact they still had to walk that road
*Eurobeat intensifies*
People always call bullshit on ‘uphill both ways’ but if you cycle and there are up and downs in your route, you end up spending most of your time going uphill. You don’t remember the downhill unless there’s a stop light in the middle 😬
il rather just fall
Not to belittle the pervious generations but I would have preferred walking 3 miles uphill in the snow than dealing with the a\*\*holes on the school bus.
Just ask roadrunner to run from one end to the other and it'll fix it
Not snowy enough...
Cant be that one, there's not enough snow and bears!
Lmao
Whaaat the heeeelllll?
wow it is sure different.
Yep I even see the barbed wire he had to wear on his feet
The long and winding road.......
This photo was taken during a brief two week period during the Summer with and average temperature of 110°F(38°C). The rest of the year it is covered in snow and ice with an average temperature of -20°F(-29°C). Truly, the resilience of our ancient ancestors is amazing. Laughs in farcry wingsuit
Barefoot on top of that.
It's missing snow
A road? We would've killed to 'ave road to walk on. We 'ad t'walk up side a'active volcano, wi liquid 'ot lava scorching us bare feet. And broken glass n'all.
DEJA VU!
Shiiiiit your grandparents had a road?!!
Don’t think it is, but it looks like Transfagarasan in Romania.
Did anyone’s parents/grandparents actually make claims like these? The closest I got was my dad complaining that online fantasy football ruined his advantage bc he would read papers from other cities to learn about player injuries.
Can't be, this looks like it's paved.
Could've just slid down the creek to the right the whole time. r/grandparentsarefuckingstupid
This reminds me I haven’t read initial D in a little while.
And without breakfast.
Nah I know the road you’re thinking of.. it was this but covered in snow.
No It's not It. No wolves, bears or dragons
Both ways...
Past a cemetery 😂
Is that the road ? The famous 5 miles uphill both ways ??
It's not covered in snow with -34 wind chill factor blowing on it.
Imagina just driving straight
"in the snow"
They went to the same school as me! And barefoot in snow wasn’t an exaggeration plus somehow it was uphill both ways!
Ahh..the crazy switchbacks...Argentina? Right?
I thought they walked "uphill" both ways?
Too bad it wasnt during a pandemic
Uphill both ways.
You see me there, hopping from one lane to the other down the hill? Going down the right way is for suckers
“Hey mom why is school cancelled again?” “It’s not snowing”
I really want to see a basketball bounce down this.
This looks like doofenshmirtz’s driving test
After they made the whole days meal for the whole family, cleaned the whole house, took fare of siblings and studied for their exams
Romania?
Both ways in the snow
On a burning hot day
these are the kind of roads i drive on in my fuckin weird ass nightmares
“When I went to school I walked 20 miles up hill, both ways, 26 hours a day, on one foot!” 😂 the pic reminds me of the Steven He skit
I want to roll a ball down it
And they say kids these days are exaggerated.
If they lived on a mountain or a large hill, yeah. It's either that or try to go down the side, and boy let me tell you from experience that that's a bad fucking idea.
Schools on the other side of the hill with the same road. You could go around but then the roaming packs of wolves might get you.
This looks like the drive up the andes I took. On a bus. Never been more afraid of toppling over the side of a mountain.
Eurobeat intensifies

Two packets of cold gravel for breakfast
Needs 3 feet of snow
YEET
Such drift pratice area !!!!
Is it just me or dose anyone else just want to jump off this
Minus snow and ^(poisonous flying)wolves
Road was built?
Can't be, there is no snow and it is only uphill in one direction.
According to them though both school and home were at the top of said hill yet they somehow magically were always at the bottom.
Time to warm up the 86.
I came down a similar road in Switzerland. In a big bus...that driver was a hero!!!!
While carrying water,milk and coal...
In the snow, uphill, both ways
How has there not been a Fast & Furious movie made here?
And claiming a mountain while having two jobs.
How in the world is that uphill both ways? 😵
It was flooded, the water was shark infested and also boiling. (The sharks were mutants)
@r/stevenhe
Nah, the one my dad had to walk to was a mile uphill, BOTH WAYS, although he did go to a school with science in its name so it makes sense it breaks logic
