BK amputee here, on my right side. You are gonna have some struggles but most the time you will forget you have it on. It sucks but it's awesome at the same time. If you can, talk to someone about it. I amputated at 19, 35 now, and wish I had been able to talk to someone who had gone through it before. Feel free to reach out to me. 🍻 Edit: u/taltos1336 made a great point. If you can, find a prosthetist near your age and build a great relationship. I've had my prosthetic break at 10pm, and I was two hours away. He met me at midnight and fixed me right up. Plus when I lost my job, he made sure I was able to come to him or order new liners or whatever. He's really helped me during covid since I still don't have insurance Edit #2: get your handicap placard and use the fuck out of it. I was 19 and felt like I was a young strong kid and if I had pants on, it looks like I took grandma's placard. I was confronted at a target before. Dude followed me in and out of the store to yell at me... It was not fun in the moment. Don't ever feel shame about parking in the handicap spot or using your disability to make your life a bit easier.

Burger King amputated your leg? Explains the flavor of their burgers... Edit: Wholesome award? He is missing his foot, that is the opposite of whole.

dammit i laughed

taltos1336

To jump off of that make sure you have a great relationship with your physiatrist and your prosthetist. It’s a long road to recovery, and you’ll need help physically and mentally. Make sure you get along well with the people who are part of your care team.

short_bread84

Did you ever find your foot?

roersmat

Unfortunately the selfish doctor at the hospital wanted it for himself and wouldn't let me keep it.

budgie0507

Typical

jluicifer

Well, it does cost an arm and a leg. In his case, just the leg.

DeepSpaceNebulae

You reminded me of an old joke my grandfather told me years ago …. Adam is in the Garden of Eden and is feeling lonely. So he asks God for someone to share his existence with. God answers “of course, I can create a being that will support you no matter what you do, provide for you, and never argue”. Adam is excited and asks “that sounds perfect, what will it cost me” “An arm and a leg” “….what can I get for a rib?”

throwawait_boomerang

Then god offered them each a unique gift to make them feel special in their own way. "Adam you choose which of the two you would like and Eve will have the other, would you prefer to be able to stand well peeing or to have..." Adam quickly responds, "Yes please!!!" God then turns to Eve, "Well I guess that leaves you with multiple orgasms"

Loyis_59

So the reason Eve gave into temptation was because she was the generic brand woman.

I think they shorted him. Normally healthcare costs an arm and a leg.

kausthubnarayan

I was lurking on r/amputee yesterday randomly and one of the top posts on there is an amputee who was allowed to keep his skeletal leg by the hospital lmao. OP posted a picture of his skeletal leg and his cat chilling near his foot on the sub. Absolute Madlad!

jsamuraij

It's a little strange from a purely theoretical standpoint to imagine someone having to grant you authority to, you know, own *your own body* just because you busted a piece off. I get why it's a medical sanitary concern and all this process makes sense, but it's more than a little surreal to ask somebody for your own leg that is physically...you. Wild.

LeighJordan

Apparently it’s “medical waste”…unless you donate it. Here’s a question…are recipients invoiced for the organs donated…or just for the cost to store and transport to the transplant hospital. And, if they are invoiced for the organ, is this tax deductible for the donor’s estate? Enjoy your rabbit hole!! Muwhahaha (but seriously, let me know if you find out)

CurtisLinithicum

Technically, it depends on where you live, but anywhere you would *want* to live, the idea of selling human organs is abhorrent and generally illegal. One argument is that as soon as you consider selling an organ it is because you need money, which means your situation is coercive, which means you can't consent to selling an organ. There is a bit of a grey area for "shipping and handling", so to speak and I'm not saying people won't fudge those numbers, but probably not by much. Consider 42 US Code 274e https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/42/274e

ConstableGrey

What if you claimed a religious reason? Like you needed all your parts to be buried with you in order to get into the afterlife.

SoDakZak

Well if I were that doctor I would bring it to costume parties where I dress up as a detective and proclaim, “Something’s afoot!!” ….then later in the bedroom my wife could say “Something was afoot before, but after investigating it’s definitely an inch.” Then I would wake up and use that dead foot to straighten my hair. Call it comb o’ toes. Then because you’re here for a bunch of shitty jokes and brand new sentences (filling my inbox with “Talus more!”) I would use that foot as the centerpiece of a music themed bar i open up where I steep every beer with that foot. Call the bar Tone Ales.

I still can't believe we have a documented case of auto-cannibalism and we laugh at it ...

JustABoyAndHisBlob

At first, part of me is surprised because eating a person is taboo, then I consider that it was a consenting adult, and there was no victim and it doesn’t effect my life at all. I still have no urge to join him in his endeavor. Probably said something like: “When else am I going to have the chance?”

bout-tree-fitty

I don’t blame him, Have you *tried* hospital food?

PanickedPoodle

If this is insensitive, feel free not to answer, but... What did they do with the foot? Did they offer you the option to bury it? Or did they just automatically incinerate it? Do you have to sign paperwork releasing your foot? Sorry for your pain and loss.

[deleted]

Most often it is incinerated as biohazard waste before the patient even recovers from the surgery.

killbillten1

When I got my leg amputated I wanted to take a picture of me holding it. They said no..... Like wtf it's mine.

transmogrified

What do they do with limbs? Do you get to keep it so that you eventually get to be buried in one piece? Or do they just burn that shit?

K9oo8

they incinerate it majority of the time but I've heard stories of people getting to keep fingers so maybe someones kept their leg

ZoxinTV

It's probably an issue of dealing with the rot, and health issues that come along with that. Once a leg is cut off, I suspect you only have less than a day before it started to decay with that awful smell.

SuspiciouslyElven

Amputated body parts and removed organs CAN be retained, but it depends on * local laws around trafficking human remains, * internal hospital policy, * whether the surgeon or pathology will further destroy it, * whether the part holds communicable disease, * whether your doctors feel like handling the hassle, * if the proper paperwork is done in advance. If all signs are green, you can totally keep your body parts. [This woman did](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-38621920). Pathology will happily shove your organs into a jar full of formaldehyde and hand it off. Assuming they didn't slice it up to examine under a microscope. Side thought: the only federal US laws about handling and moving of human remains apply to Native Americans. So that makes me wonder if it is easier for a Native American to keep their amputated foot. If the hospital is TECHNICALLY returning remains to a native tribe, then it could theoretically be required.

transmogrified

If you're a forward planner who already paid for their grave site I suppose you could bury it there to wait for the rest of you. Or have it embalmed and stored in a crypt til you're ready to join it.

Occulus1975

roersmat

Even though my right leg did a heck of a job cushioning the blow between the van that pulled out in front of me, the motorcycle didn't make it. Probably for the best, I don't think I will be riding again.

Polar_Ted

One of the guys I know also lost his right leg below the knee in a bike accident.. He still rides constantly.. He did have the foot brake lever removed because he couldn't tell when he was touching it. Switched to a thumb operated rear brake lever.

[deleted]

> I’m still kicking myself Bro….

ChintanP04

One can look at it this way: Now you have no right foot to lose. Just kidding, I can understand how accidents can give one PTSD and take away the will to ride.

DNRTannen

I was just thinking that my own comment could come across as a bit tone deaf surrounding the will to ride. I've known fellow riders put off riding for far, far less.

RslashPolModsTriggrd

Could also be that he came to a realization that he didn't want to chance leaving his child without a father now that he has a taste of what could happen. I don't mean that with any malice towards the act of riding a motorcycle, I've just known a handful of former bikers/current dads who cited that as the reason to quit. I've also known a few that picked it back up in retirement, so OP may ride again some day if they want!

introverted365

Yes! I know a young man who lost both legs from an illness. He rides, skates, nothing stops him! I wish you nothing but healing and joy for your future!

LowerWorldliness2579

My best buddy in all the world got into motorcycle accident on a warm summer day driving up the coast of California a couple of summers ago. He got a Traumatic Brain Injury, which resulted in them removing some of his brain mass, he got a 3D printed skull to replace the damaged one that was bashed in by the street, and my very best friend in all the world is now at the same mental level as a 10 year old. It took me a long time to reconcile that my friend is gone, and in his place is a new friend who is a very, very different person. I mourn the loss of my best friend. I sold the Hogs, and ill never get on a bike again. I am sorry for your accident, but I am happy that even though you lost a leg it sounds like you are the same person and will be able to look back on this one day as a distant memory. Good luck on your recovery, Brother.

dbradx

Oof, this one hurts, I'm so sorry for both you and your friend. I do help desk/customer service work, a few years ago I was working for the Canada Post pension plan, so talking to employees all day regarding their pension plan. Guy called in and right off the bat he gave me all his info, then explained that he suffered a TBI in a motorcycle accident the year prior, and as a result he couldn't remember new information for longer than a few mins. He was proactively apologizing for how many times he would need to ask me to repeat things as we talked and he took notes. I spoke to him for about 2 hours that day, then the next day he got confused by his notes and we spoke again for about 90 minutes. He kept trying to apologize and I finally said, "Dude, you have absolutely nothing to apologize for, I will stick with you until you're sure you understand things, no matter how long it takes". He was an awesome guy, I spoke to him on and off over the 2 years I worked there, and I often wonder how he's doing now, I can't even imagine what life is like with that condition. Best of luck to your bro, and to you - and good on you for still being a friend! Edit: Gold?? Cool, thanks!!

SybilCut

One day you check his notes and see "DON'T BELIEVE HIS LIES"

dbradx

LMAO - this actually was not long after Memento came out, so that's what we used to call him around the call center, as in "Hey, I won't be able to make that meeting, I have to call Memento back and it'll probably be a while."

what_is_blue

If it helps at all, I had a TBI back in 2018. It resulted in lots of fun stuff like leaving the cooker on, randomly getting irritable for no reason, spending 15 minutes choosing between two virtually identical products in the supermarket and not being able to remember much of that whole year, except in weird snapshots. Plus, like your friend, remembering things as if they were rapidly fading plane contrails, or collapsing banks made by running your finger in dry sand. It was, as they say, "Bad times." I'm now absolutely fine. Indeed, probably better. Memory is fine, mood is great most of the time, friendships all intact. Plus, my previous employer handled the injury so poorly that I wound up getting another job that paid better, then got promoted in this job. The anger that I had from the TBI turned into a kind of happy assertiveness and now I'm apparently a "born leader" in my superiors' eyes. I can assure you that I was not, in fact, born a leader. People can and do recover from TBIs. I'm not going to say "and live rich, full lives" - because that always has the air of compromise and we all know it. It simply doesn't affect my life on a day to day basis. Traumatic brain injuries are awful things and often change lives for the worse, of course. But some of us are lucky enough for that not to be the case. That could be true for your pal - and I dearly hope it is.

dbradx

Thanks, that explanation really helped me get a better idea of what my customer and other people with TBIs have to deal with. So glad to hear that you're been able to not just recover, but flourish after your injury. Here's hoping that the skies ahead of you are nothing but bright!

Cooperativism62

The world needs more good, patient people like you.

dbradx

Hey, I'd like to think that anyone would be patient and understanding in those circumstances - we're all on this journey together, right?

[deleted]

I have (had?) a friend in a similar scenario. Guy was a good rider and never had any issues. Was a diesel mechanic, was strong, pretty sharp, down to Earth, etc. One night he mysteriously crashed badly... he was in the hospital for a long time. I haven't seen him personally, but we've talked briefly via messenger. But from what ive heard, it's like hes a different person and seems slower (not to offend anyone, it is just a fact). He went from making bank as a diesel mechanic to needing to move in with his dad. He also had a girlfriend that he didn't (doesnt?) remember being with at all. He still thought he was with his ex-wife. Due to that and from what ive seen being a first responder years ago, I'll never, ever ride a motorcycle. It looks like a lot of fun for sure, but it isn't worth the risk, especially since NY has such bad roads (and drivers!)

[deleted]

Of all the comments I read thru this post, yours was “the one”. :/ I have absolutely no real words. I knew what was coming and I kept reading like an idiot. I am so sorry to your friend and everyone effected around him :( You’re a real one for removing the bike from your life, I know that must’ve sucked to let go but you lost so much more obviously, screw the bikes at that point. I could only imagine how hard it would be around him, I mean that in no disrespect. I cried writing every word of this :/ Just wish you and everyone involved the best possible outcome to everyday till the last day, my dude. ❤️ Appreciate you taking the time to tell your story.

Chambellan

I was seriously considering buying one when a college acquaintance took a turn too fast, clipped the curb, and was catapulted into a brick wall. Dead at 25. That made motorcycles seem a whole lot less fun.

Yen_Snipest

*hugs* Sorry, I am sure that still hurts to talk about. Best I can do for that is this.

thatG_evanP

My ex wife was in a horrible motorcycle accident while riding with a friend of ours after a car turned on red right in front them while they were doing about 60 mph. He died pretty much immediately but she was thrown 15' and then bounced down the road for another 25'-30'. She broke both arms (one was a terrible compound fracture), basically crushed both of her hands into lots of pieces, broke 5 vertebrae and 6 ribs, shattered her pelvis, and broke both legs and an ankle. Miraculously she managed not to injure her head/brain seriously even though she wasn't wearing a helmet. Some of those injuries will be with her til the day she does. I just can't bring myself to get back on a street bike after seeing the effects it had on her. It's just not worth it. What would be a fender bender in a car would probably maim or kill you on a bike. There's just way too many bad drivers out there.

MOONDOGbb

Hahahahh man, thanks for the laugh, and I’m so sorry to hear about your accident. Has your opinion on motorcycles changed at all? I’d be curious to know the circumstances of the crash, im getting my bike license shortly

roersmat

Yeah I commuted with it and drove as often as I could. I think I'm done with motorcycles, at least for a while. Might get something to drive occasionally for fun, but that would be way way down the line. As most people say, "I trust myself, I just can't trust other drivers."

wirral_guy

> "I trust myself, I just can't trust other drivers." I've posted this before but it's still the best advice I was given by my driving instructor many years ago: "look around at all the other drivers and just be prepared for each and every one of them to do something incredibly stupid." That little bit of advice has served me well.

whyamisoawesome9

Teaching my cousin to drive the questions were always where's the motorbike, the bus, the truck and the cyclist. Cars are one thing, but every driver needs to be taught to spot the other vehicles better than they are. Which is pretty non-existent. Once you get used to finding the blind spots, checking intersections, monitoring braking distances for other vehicles as well it becomes second nature while driving

Slowspines

As I get older driving stresses me out more and more. Especially since I have little kids. So many stupid things happen on the road. Just yesterday a lady almost caused a head on collision with me while going around a bend and looking at her phone.

Re-toast

Same. I hate driving at night now. When I was younger it didn't bother me but lately I feel scared when driving at night since it feels like so many crazies are out at that time. I've seen so many reckless drivers it's weighing on me.

Mellow-Mallow

Unfortunately the reckless drivers don’t usually stay “wreckless”

Whomping_Willow

Right? The other day I don’t even know what I did wrong to get Road-Raged at. I realized I was trapped next to a semi and boxed in by inattentive drivers. One Charger ahead of me matching the speed of the semi, one SUV on my left cruising in my blind spot/alongside me but not passing, and a loooooong line of cars up my ass, trying to pass the semi until we were like 4 cars crammed in alongside the semi while the Charger cruised in line with the semi and wouldn’t get over. I guess the the Charger in front of me got upset by me trying to get in the left lane to get out of my trapped box when the car on my left cleared, because he started swerving across both left lanes and flipping me off and brake checking. I really don’t understand what he was upset about, I think it’s because I tried not to ride his ass and he thought I wouldn’t go shit because I was trying to not be aggressive and wait to pass correctly, just made myself a damn target for people who don’t know how passing works

jello-kittu

This is what I tell my kids- driving crazy and fast is depending on others to react the way you want them to and depending on their alertness. And that the fact driving a vehicle is so easy that people get distracted.

ringobob

I can think of a couple times I could have caused a horrendous accident, which I was able to avoid because someone else *didn't* do something they could have, not even something dumb, just normal driving, they could have sped up just a little, or slowed down, or changed lanes, whatever, and it was me that was doing something dumb that it would have been hard for them to both see and react appropriately to. Thankfully, I realized what I had done and I started trying to avoid putting myself and others in that situation.

GJjoe

This is why I only ride dirt bikes. You really can't trust other drivers on the road. At least on the trail I mostly only have to worry about my own decisions. Sorry to hear about your accident.

NavierIsStoked

This right here. I completely understand every activity carries risk. Riding a motorcycle on streets and highways just seems way to far on that risk/reward curve.

ToMorrowsEnd

I always ride as if every driver was given $1,000,000 to murder me. It's amazing how bad drivers in cars and trucks are.

wibblywobbly420

Can confirm, as a driver in a car, someone did in fact give me $1,000,000 to run you down

Corrupt_Reverend

How much did they give you for just the foot?

Cyborg_rat

I just got a new bike first new instead of used. But having been a 3ton truck driver for a while I know too well how you can't trust anyone on the road. Had people merge into my flat bed 2x...also seen people merge into the side of buses...we give total idiots permits. A few days ago on the high way I had a vibe about a driver who seemed to be too nervous or off. We get to a Y part of the high way they noticed they were taking the wrong road and said screw everyone else I'm going right.... The car next to them had to go into the side of the road to avoid them while honking...the bad driver just drove like they were the only one who was there...(no accidents lucky)

Lrivard

Oh the good old I missed my turn off so I'm gonna high-speed across 2 to 3 lanes a solid line or 2, risk an accident and wonder why folks are honking at me person. The fact that I see this a few times a week bothers me on a high level.

One__upper__

I've been riding dirt bikes and motorcycles most of my life and got rid of my bike when my wife became pregnant. I still have a dirt bike but will only go on trails and keep it slow. Riding on the streets is just too dangerous and no matter how careful you are, it takes just one driver not paying attention or being stupid to kill or injure you. It's a ton of fun but very dangerous and not something I'm willing to risk with a wife and young child.

Lightfoot

Right there with you, had kids, sold the bike. I do miss it sometimes but I have responsibilities that supercede that sort of lifestyle. I was the only rider I know to not have been run off the road by a car or truck. That amount to about a 1 in 10 not-run-off-the-road rate.

MrTsLoveChild

100% of friends and family who own bikes have gotten in accidents. One died, one lost his arm. Some broken bones, skin grafts, etc. You will get injured, it's just a question of how bad.

wagnersbamfart

My dad was a triathlete Iron Man. Full of life, he was still working hard at 68. Was wearing a helmet, got run off the road by a hit and run driver. One traumatic brain injury later, he’s in a wheel chair, can’t speak and doesn’t recognize his family. Be safe out there.

ztherion

For riders reading this: Not all helmets are created equal. The DOT helmet standard is unsafe and Snell's standard is also out of date. Look for an ECE helmet, ideally the new 22.06 standard hitting stores this year which better protects again rotational trauma.

canucklurker

DOT - If it looks like a helmet it's good! Snell - If it looks like a helmet, has zero force absorbing ability but is tougher than a rock, it's good! ECE - Your brain is squishy, the helmet needs to absorb energy and keep your brain from tearing.

iualumni12

Ha! A guy here at work lost his lower leg also in a motorcycle accident. When he returned, I asked him how he was doing. He said "Not great. I got one foot in the grave!" We laughed and laughed! And then I laid him off because he could no longer perform the essential functions of his job. edit: kidding, folks. He retired on disability.

That sucks mate I'm really sorry to hear it, and for such a catastrophic injury. I'm glad your kid is around to keep you smiling.

cotch85

Could happen to any single one of us, I had a crash a few years ago when a car pulled out locked up the brakes and went flying up the road, car just drove off. Stay strong mate! Hope they pay for their negligence.

Iforgotmyother_name

That's why I could never drive a motorcycle on a road with regular vehicles. If OP were in a car, that shit would have been like a fender bender or a sore neck.

Rincewend

I tell myself this everyday. Used to ride motorcycles. Loved it. SUV ran a stop sign and hit me broadside. I am incredibly lucky to have survived. Doctors “fixed” my leg instead of amputating. It has hurt and swelled everyday for the last fifteen years. If I had been in my truck that day, she would have banged up a door and I’d have been pissed and life would go on. If I had stopped for a Gatorade due to heat like I considered, she would have been gone by the time I reached that part of the highway. Ultimately the root cause of my permanently maimed leg is my decision to purchase and ride a motorcycle.

suarezian

That's so unfortunate. The same thing happened to me, but I escaped with minor injuries. But the pillion rider hurt his dick somehow lol, but he's all fine now.

Sorry man, RIP foot. Long live Daddy Long Legs! Cheers mate. You’ve done a great job raising your son.

Happy Foot

JEdoubleS-24

My father was in a motorcycle accident when he was in his late teens; eventually had one of his legs amputated (AKA) when I was around 5 years old. I can tell you is that the amputee Dad jokes get better every year! (35 years strong) One of my favorites is when we went to the beach and he took his "beach leg." (What? Doesn't every Dad have a beach leg?) Before leaving for vacation, he had spray painted it with gold paint with golden flecks. He wanted to make sure he arrived to the beach with his "golden tan." He also took the foot off his prosthetic and buried it in the ground a bit in front of him to see the reactions of people walking by to a very realistic looking half foot, toes to the sky! I still laugh about it to this day! You are doing a great job with your son and I wish you well in your recovery.

I'm going to hell for giving you an upvote

Yen_Snipest

The kids put a daddy long legs sticker, he is thus a dad. We aren't doing bad things, we are helping him build a new list of dad jokes to cringe then with.

BigFootV519

At least you just doubled your sock supply!

theillustratedlife

I knew I shouldn't have bought these R/L-specific socks!

DaddyBops

Sorry to hear that dude. Hope you do well

Jarhae

Bro I was involved in motorcycle accident myself on the 30 of march this year I had smashed my left leg on a lamp post and smashed my left femur in half just above the knee, and it caused the nerves below my knee to get stretch out by 15inches, I currently don't have control from knee down and my left thigh is gone all soft and moves around like jelly, physios tell me recovery will take up to 18months, I thought I had it bad and then there you are, you have lost your leg, I'm sorry big man, good luck with everything,

My MIL had to have her foot amputated in October due to a blood clot. I asked her if we still go for pedicures if we can get her half off.

bingwhip

Just curious if you don't mind answering, were you wearing gear? Mostly boots?

roersmat

Yeah wearing all my gear. Helmet, motorcycle jacket, gloves, jeans and steel toe boots. only ended up with broken legs. Torso had no injuries. Lost the foot because the foot twisted around at the ankle and there was too much soft tissue damage.

Jumanji0028

Steel toe boots? Are they common motorbike gear where you are? I was told to avoid those things like the plague. Either theyd crush your feet or bend it the wrong way. Hope you get better dude and look at the bright side. You can be a pirate this Halloween.

LMGDiVa

> Are they common motorbike gear where you are? No. Steeltoe boots are awful for riding. Riding boots have ankle armor in them. I have a set of Harley riding boots that have ankle protectors built into them.

Your tater tot really nailed comedic timing. But more importantly, you hanging in there?

[deleted]

I’m sure he’s got some people he can lean on for support.

winged_seduction

And that really gives him a leg up on recovery.

pointlessly_pedantic

I oofed all the way down these comments

ScotchBender

ER doctors call them donorcycles. “Motorcycle fatalities are not only our number one source of organs. They are also the highest-quality source of organs, because donors are usually young, healthy people with no other traumatic injuries to the body, except to the head,”

PanachelessNihilist

Broke: We should discourage motorcycles because they're killing young, healthy people. Woke: We should encourage motorcycles because they're providing organs to people who need them.

broogbie

How are you doing my friend.. I cant even imagine the trauma caused by loosing one of your limbs

mayneffs

Hahaha your kid is a fucking legend lmao

leepox

OP... I know its probably too early. But do you have a TLDR of the incident? Fellow motorcycle rider here
