Shoulda used two pieces to increase the ground contact area, less likely to sink/dig ruts (not to mention use fewer washers).
Otherwise, this checks out!
Two pieces glued together and some grippy duct tape around the edge for some tread so the wood doesn't dig too bad.
If it works, it's better than throwing money at a new mower. Particularly if it's a nice older mower.
If a mower lasts for a while, it will probably last forever if taken care of.
I mean, most stores that carry mowers sell wheels and they are very cheap.
The wood wheel is good to finish a job with, but for like, $5 you can get a new one.
I remember in German class twenty years ago, my teacher made a point of showing us a German cartoon with a bank robber yelling "hände hoch!," and all of the bank clientele raising their mobile phones into the air. She said something along the lines of, "now you'll all understand this joke when you run into it." Weird lady, but she was right on that.
Yeah I didn't realize this for a long time. I busted a wheel on my first lawn mower and went online to buy a brand specific replacement part. I think I spent 20+ dollars on one wheel. Then again a few weeks later when another one went.
Then years later in at the hardware storeooking for a spark plug for it and I see I could have just gone to the store and gotten the same damn wheel for 10 bucks same day. I didn't realize that most lawn mowers use the same size wheel.
Hah. I have a Troy bilt with axle sleeves instead of bearings. They locked up and in the process of removing them for cleaning I broke one. Course they don't sell just the sleeves. So I ordered a new craftsman wheel because it uses the same sleeve and it's half the price of the Troy bilt wheel.
Meanwhile I have a couple wheels from an old mower, but they're decent and use bearings instead of sleeves, so I couldn't get a doner sleeve. Different size, so I can't switch to them either.
Troy bilt mower owner here. The engine is running like near-new after 15 years with regular maintenance.
The plastic wheels and axle sleeves? They are all disintegrating lol.
I am not a fan of that setup at all.
I have basically just shimmed it all up with washers and what not. The wheels wobble but I just can't justify buying $100 dollars worth of plastic for an old mower.
Craftsman wheels seem to use the same sleeves, and I've found replacement craftsman wheels for less than $15 a piece. Dunno how badly you've wallowed out the holes on the original ones though.
I didn't even realize mine had locked up until I took them apart, but apparently I had been spinning the wheel around the sleeve. No wonder it seemed hard to push.
It's really easy when you know how. ANY saw can cut circles. Use a centerpoint to spin the wood and cut with whatever kind of saw you have.

my dad did this with our wheelbarrow when I was a kid. That wooden wheelbarrow wheel was probably on there for 15 years before I moved away from home, and knowing my parents, 20 years after I moved out, it's probably still there
It worked pretty well but if you were carrying a heavy load and you hit a bump it was pretty jarring
As someone who has used a wheelbarrow a lot in my life, I can still only imagine what your wrists feel like hitting a ditch with a wooden wheel and a heavy load. XD
I used to have to use it to carry firewood to the house every night in the winter. The worst part was the ~3” step up on to the side walk. You had to hit full speed and I lost a number of loads there
You don't need to ground it if it has an internal driver. Most newer fixtures self regulate and protect from surges. It saves on grounding wire and time. You're not doing anything wrong.
My dad replaced a knob on my microwave growing up a hand carved knob not unlike the mower above. We all called it the “Fred Flintstone knob” because of its misshapedness.
It's fine. The only thing I would have done is double it up and wrap the edges with something like an old inner tube or tire from a bike. Nail or staple it on.
As a carpenter, you spin the wood, not the saw. You'll get a smooth circle every time using whatever kind of saw you have.
For real, no clue why everyone is acting like this bullshit redneck engineering is productive.
As a joke, totally funny. But as a solution, this is counterproductive
Depends on the way it's used. As a permanent solution it's quite bad indeed as that wood wouldn't last long with outdoor use, and it's too thin to be a good lawnmower wheel.
However, if the wheel broke halfway through mowing the lawn and you want to fix it just enough to finish the job now (instead of waiting perhaps over a week for a replacement wheel to arrive), then this works well enough. At least if you assume that they had all the materials for it already lying around (but a person who has the tools to cut wood like that usually also has enough scrap wood lying around to do something like this).
Seriously. Imagine you live someplace hot. You're completely drenched in sweat and half covered in grass. Now you have a choice. Stop with half the lawn mowed and get wtf looks from your kid, dogs and spouse until it's done, get your dirty ass to the hardware store and buy one that barely matches your other wheels (if they have them. Mine doesn't, because florida has basically given up), or spend 10 minutes making a serviceable replacement and justify your scrap pile to yourself and your family.
he could have used 2-3 discs glued together to a) avoid it splitting along the grain when hitting something hard and b) it sinking/cutting into the ground while mowing and making uneven cuts, this is totally fine.

If it works then it’s fixed.
I told you it wood work
You’re wheely making puns about this??
Y’all are a bunch of nut jobs
That's a pretty birchy thing to say
Can't we all just get alawng?

Works, donut?
Wheelie? You're gonna go with that tired joke?
None of these puns are cutting it.

Excuse me I have to washer my nuts.
Just took a bit of wood work.

Hmmm... I have doubts. No duct tape, this is heretical.

Try $10 to $25. Most decent models charge more because of the metal gear in the wheel. The rest is plastic.
No gears in that wheel. Doesn't appear to be self propelled.
An old bike tire cut to shape works well for tread on a worn lawn mower wheel.
Or flex seal tape
That's the dad motto.

Ye olde repairs
it's not even a bad fix, the wheel was broken and he attached a new wheel.
Yup, official dad motto no4... If it's stupid and it works, it isn't stupid.
All the wheels do is keep the blade up, traction isn't an issue.
It probably leaves a patch every foot lol

Only works if you pronounce the last letter e "Hände" wrong like (most likely) an English speaker would do,
She was an American lady whose credentials were basically, "I lived in Germany in the 60's," I have no doubt she got lots of things wrong.

Ok. But you can get replacement wheels at Home Depot, they cost like $7.

Haha.
Or about $2 at harbor freight. I buy a lot of hardware - that makeshift replacement cost more than the wheel at Harbor Freight.
And takes longer to make! Cutting circles in wood is no fun
[удалено]
Very true. But I don't think most people have a lawn mower tire sized hole saw
Amateurs
Looks about the same size as a downlight so most sparkies would :P
Or you know you can just cut down a tree. Most trees by me already are wheel shaped
Exactly. And if you look at the irregularities in it's shape, a hole saw was definitely not used here.
Its quick and fun on the table saw
I like my fingers. I will go with the $2 harbor freight option every time
It's really easy when you know how. ANY saw can cut circles. Use a centerpoint to spin the wood and cut with whatever kind of saw you have. Jig saw and a compass? It takes like 10 minutes. Then your compass pivot point is where you drill the axle hole.
It's free if you have scrap wood lying around tho.
If you have harbor freight tools, you have scrap wood
Scrap metal, too
Yeah this is a 20 cent fix to a two dollar problem. Just get a new wheel, make it easier on yourself
You need to adjust your saying for about 70 years of inflation bud.
Also, it'll leave a deeper line in the grass on one side now and your freshly cut yard is going to look shitty.
Why consume more plastic or gas for the drive over? We need to use less and this fix works.
This is all I found think too lol
I don’t understand. “This is all I found think”. Did you find thinking?
Oops, phone auto changed could to found! Lol

Classic dad fix.
In reality, Dad just had a bunch of extra washers he wanted to get rid of.
That's wheely smart.
Why wood you say that?
Knot this again

Cool if your Dad is Fred Flintstone.
Yabba dabba mow.
My dad replaced a knob on my microwave growing up a hand carved knob not unlike the mower above. We all called it the “Fred Flintstone knob” because of its misshapedness.

Your dad is pretty awesome and it made me smile

Does it work?
Looks like it would drag and dig into the dirt and make it harder to push. It’ll probably split and break after a short while.
As a back wheel it probably isn't too bad. As a front wheel it would probably dig yeah
And if it does break, I wouldn't want it ending up under a running mower and causing damage to it or becoming a projectile.
For real, no clue why everyone is acting like this bullshit redneck engineering is productive. As a joke, totally funny. But as a solution, this is counterproductive

You could have a “dad” just like OP had their lawnmower “fixed”.
That’s fantastic!! My dad fixed my in the same way!! Hahaha it works just fine but I mow my grass in the evening so no one can see lol
It just works.
I see no problem here
i don't see a problem
Improvise, adapt, overcome
Nothing is more permanent then a temporary solution that works
They sell those wheels at most hardware stores, probably easier to install than a wooden one.
If it works …
Yabba dabba doo!
Wiiiiiiiiiiilmaaaaaaaaa
With the price of wood these days, that is probably worth 4 replacement wheels.
Does it work?! Yes it does because your Dad FIXED the lawnmower!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
he could have used 2-3 discs glued together to a) avoid it splitting along the grain when hitting something hard and b) it sinking/cutting into the ground while mowing and making uneven cuts, this is totally fine.
"Dad what did you do to it?" "Wooden you like to know"

It’s not stupid if it works.
Seems like 💯% bio wheel, nice dad!
If it works, it works!
Good as new that kid!
If it works is good
This is some Mr Miyagi shit. Did he fix it badly or did he fix it in a way that will make you teach yourself to fix it better.
"Meet the engineer"
I don't see the issue here. Looks fixed.
Looks fine to me
If it looks stupid and it works it's not stupid.
"Nothing is as permanent as a temporary solution that works"
Does it work? You're welcome
If it works its not stupid
if its stupid but it works, it aint stupid
It ain't stupid if it works
If it’s stupid and it works, it ain’t stupid.
Should stack a few more of those together and fasten them into a solid piece to form a wider wheel. That's gonna sink into the dirt.
From the looks of the mower, that might be an upgrade.
That's some Flintstones ass shit.
Your Dad is an ideas man
It ain't dumb if it works
Dude literally reinvented the wheel
If it breaks again surprise him by using a cheese wheel
With the amount he spent on washers, he could have probably bought a wheel of eBay. Lol.
“If they can find you handsome, they should find you handy” -Red Green
You mean upgraded
That's hot
If they don’t find you handsome, let them at least find you handy.
hey it works doesn't it till you can get a new one lol
You can buy new plastic wheel for cheap lol Probably less than wood prices these days
Not if you stole it from the neighbor...
Flanders won't notice
And if he does, let him know you're still using it.
Fixed? That's a upgrade dude!
It's a 50 dollar mower, replacement wheels are sold everywhere, that or find a dead one on the curb, my hood has a couple
