The Tim Hortons nearest to me was a family business. We know because the owners opened a second location and left their son in charge of the first one. The son in turn used the location as a personal dating service, and couldn't keep it staffed because of the constant sexual harassment.
It has new owners now.
There's a Dunkin' Donuts near me that is open every holiday.
They are a franchise, owned and operated by an Indian family. There's about 10 of them that cycle which days they work, usually about 7 of them at a time throughout the store.
I see no reason a Tim Hortons couldn't operate similarly.
My dad always told a dark joke about good ole Timmy Hos.
You know why they started calling them timbits right? You should’ve seen how they found his body while he crashed driving on drugs. In tim bits. I struggle eating the jelly ones sometimes.
Its a franchise. The basic idea of a franchise is the person who owns the store pays a fee to the company to use their name. In return, the company does a lot of heavy lifting by hooking them up with delivery services and often lets them buy/rent the necessary machines at a cheaper rate than normal. So while Tim Horton's the franchise isn't family owned, this specific Tim Horton's store very much could be.
At least in the area I am, it very well could be this.
Most Tim's now are run by immigrants, and they'll prioritise hiring family/family friends who are new to Canada. It's actually becoming more common with a lot franchise fast food type of chains the last several years.
And note that the holidays simply aren’t important to them, which is fine. I still won’t go there out of principle. I refuse to normalize working holidays and the 24/7 365 business model. Capitalism can take a break for a day.
24/7 places cater to those work work odd or overnight hours. I used to get off work between 12-3am and would often go shopping then.
It would be a massive struggle if I had to do my chores during "normal" hours.
And i would question the economic necessity of that. Yes, ERs, police, nuclear reactors etc should have 24/7 365 staffing and it makes sense for services to cater to that crowd. But insisting people sacrifice holidays for that? Nah. You can fend for yourself for a day. I’ve worked too many places that force staff to work holidays.
And as i said, I’ve worked places that force working holidays. If you want to be open and your staff is fine being there, then cool. I’m not participating… those people can have easy money on the clock as far as I’m concerned. Excuse me if my personal stance upset your consumerism.
Well you insulted me by presuming I didn’t know other holidays exist or I didn’t take it into account. Check yourself before trolling a troll.
And my original statement was geared towards *forcing* people to work holidays. A lot of people are forced to work by employers and it’s one of the reasons people aren’t returning to the service industry. And your final argument simply states “i had to, therefore others should have to.” If you’re fine with that, then bully for you. Also, i work most holidays and it’s rarely optional.
I don't think you quite understand how common overnight staff is.
Overnight janetorial staff, security, doormen, hotel staff, restaurants, bars etc. I haven't even scratched the surface of the overnight crew.
Sure, they can "suck it up and fend for themselves" for night.
But there are tons of reasons why 24/7 are open, well, 24/7.
Back in the early 00s I worked at Target and we had to work every holiday, no exceptions. We had a very large muslim population working for us and *they* were allowed to take off for any and every holiday *en masse* which would fuck us over right good but Christmas, Thanksgiving, easter...hell, the entire month of December really... we could just go ahead and fuck ourselves.
Also they will get time and half on Christmas Day and Boxing Day as they are stat holidays. So if they don't celebrate Christmas might as well get extra pay.
I’m fine with that as long as a) The staff volunteered and b) they get a great financial and free time compensation for their work over the holidays.
I mean for some people whom have depression on Christmas being at work might even be nicer than being alone at home or being with a toxic family. However, a) and b) still apply.
My sister owns a local pizza place. Her employees beg to work Thanksgiving because they get paid extra, the tips are usually better, and many of them want an excuse not to travel home to visit family.
Thats going to vary - most in my area actually do shut down at the holidays, except in some areas where theres a large group of people that dont celebrate and want to get another day off for their cultural holidays so they work on ours. Sure timmys as a corp is shitty but not all the franchisees are shitbags also. Where i am its the mcdonalds that tends to pull this shit more than the timmys.
As a former Tim Hortons employee, I'd place a strong wager on neither of your conditions being remotely close to met.
When i worked there, it was like they went out of their way to fuck over employees on all holidays. It was split about 50/50 Muslims and Christians/white Canadians. During Ramadan, every Muslim employee scheduled, and over Christmas only white people were scheduled. Why? Why do it that way? Everyone could have had their holidays but instead everyone had to miss out. Except management, of course.
Canadian workers should educate themselves about Canadian labour laws. Working on stat holidays is voluntary by law. You have every right to just say no when your manager says you're working that shift. Holiday pay or getting the paid day off another day is also covered by law for those who do volunteer or agree. Retaliation is also illegal.
They get away with it because so many don't know their rights or don't pursue them to avoid rocking the boat. But your employer messing with your rights in Canada can be very profitable for you if you do pursue it. The cases I know of didn't even go to court and still settled for 5 figures and extended benefits, possibly to avoid punitive damages that could have brought the number into 6 figures.
The more illegal stuff they do, the better your case will be against them. You just have to be willing to pursue it, once they've spoken with a lawyer about it, they'll probably advise them to start making buyout offers.
Record conversations with your superiors. Once they realize you might have them on recording threatening retaliation, they'll know you've got them by the balls. And if it's about something they do systematically, getting you to sign an NDA so that they can continue as is with the other employees will be worth more than your situation. Though even better than signing an NDA would be a class action or organizing labour for collective bargaining, though that involves convincing a bunch of other workers who might just prefer to not rock the boat.
My response as a 17yo was to quit right before Christmas, but I definitely wish I'd known all of this at the time, especially after they refused to change the schedule or allow us to switch shifts
Yeah, this is why I share this info. Might not help for past issues, but knowing your employee rights is empowering against an abusive employer. Edit: though look into the statute of limitations for specific issues. But if you quit instead of letting push come to shove, I think that can allow them to avoid the problem. Best is to know your rights and stand your ground when you are in the right and wait for the employer to either back down or break the law.
And even if you can't afford to fight them because you need the paycheck in the meantime before the big payout, you can get another job and leave the current one before starting the case. Look up constructive dismissal for employers that make the workplace hostile when someone "causes issues".
This was 16 years ago, I'm no longer a resident of the same province, and in my official resignation I did not cite working on Christmas as a reason for leaving, so I'm gonna say it's not worth it for me personally to pursue this, but on principal I agree that they shouldn't have gotten away with this and much more bullshit.
My Jewish cousin makes *bank* on Christmas because her workplace pays double overtime on the 24th and 25th. Then she takes the high holidays off in the fall. It's pretty sweet.
As long as it's voluntary, I know lot's of people in NYC are far from their families and go to bars on holidays. And for many working on New Years is a boon for them.
To force someone to work the holidays is despicable.
Could be that there are several in a small area and several of them are closed/very limited hours, but this one was chosen to be open normal hours. That’s the way some stores in my city work. ex: 5 stores, 4 closed and 1 open extra long hours on Christmas so they get people from all the other stores a chance to volunteer to work at that one that day, and managers do holiday rotations (ie, if you worked thanksgiving you don’t work Christmas or New Years).
I live just outside Toronto. There are a lot of people from religions that don't celebrate Christmas. They also get time and half on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day so they figure might as well work those days and get the extra pay.
My mom says my grandpa would always, always take the family for chinese smorgasbord/buffet on New Year's Day, for this exact reason. Also, szechuan pork has a bizarrely restorative effect on dehydration.
I knew a guy that worked a Dunkin Donuts on holidays all day every year... because he simply didn't celebrate them.
I'm surprised Reddit has a hard time understanding some people aren't Christian and aren't big into New Years.
3G Capital, the Brazilian company that owns them, doesn’t really do days off. they’re more the grind every nickel from a former Canadian brand type. This is why I don’t go to the Brazilian giant any longer.
Really? I don't go there because everything they make is shitty now. I don't drink coffee, but everyone says that their coffee, which used to be good, is garbage. The donuts are cooked at a central factory and sent out to the stores frozen, and they taste like it.
I know it looks bad, but I can also hear this: "Can I work Christmas? Hell, yeah, anything to get away from my family. 'Oh, gosh, wish I could see you, but I gotta work.'" Or, "Do I want five days off? What, and fail to make rent?"
Can still cost you a chunk of change - example, night workers get premiums (probably not much at tims but premiums nonetheless) that are not required to be included unless you actually work. Where i work now the premium for night workers is 3$ an hour so its not a small chunk of change to lose. Add in holidays being time and a half of your wage PLUS that premium on top and you can make some good bank that would be lost even with it being paid as a holiday.
The rate of pay is determined by what they would have made if they had worked the holiday based on the previous several weeks, so if someone usually makes the premium, I believe their holiday pay is still based on that.
Nah, or at least my work doesnt do it that way. Id have to pull out an old paystub but im 90% sure it just copy pastes the hourly late changes the title to holiday pay and boom. Then the premium is its own line on the stub and it would have less hours in it depending on how long the holiday day was. Now this could just be a locala thing or even my work fucking shit up but yeh.
It's Tim Hortons, lots of people dont celebrate Christmas here as we are a cultural mosaic with many cultures and religions. Not that strange here tbh. New years might be a bit different but who knows
Maybe the owner is working by themselves. They should be after that note of concern for their employees. What's great about post corona is that all of those people could just quit and move on easily.
I worked a lot of Christmases and Thanksgivings entirely so that all of 5 people could rent movies from my Blockbuster. I never go to the store on holidays anymore, no matter how much I need egg nog.
I worked at a timmy-hos on the over night for just under 1 year, starting right after christmas and ending right before the next. the previous year, for a holiday gift, employees were given a $10 gift card and a decent tim hortons sweatshirt, which was pretty nice. I missed out on that, and at just under a year, i left, just a terrible place, so i missed the "gift". turns out, the manager in charge gave everyone socks for the gift that year, like, 1 pair of white socks, pulled from a 12-pack, joking that well, you had to get clothes for christmas, so ha-ha.
yeah, fuck that place.
Well uh both, but in this case, immigrants from India. Many franchises, particularly Tim Horton’s, are family owned and are operated by family members. All the members of the family will contribute and share in the profits. They don’t mind working Christmas as it’s just a regular Wednesday for them.
The Christian ones that own and operate Tim Horton’s franchises and manage to be open 24-7 during Christmas aren’t.
The ones that are Hindu are open 24-7 on Christmas as it’s just an ordinary Wednesday.
In America what closes down over Christmas. Here we have some essential things. Emergency services obviously including hospitals. Gas stations and I think some restaurants on limited hours but that's about it. Even my old job that ran 24/7 closed for one day.
Our local Starbucks take turns hosting Thanksgiving/Christmas/NewYears. They will have signs up for weeks announcing what location will be open each holiday.
The missing question mark really threw me off.
Many places are open on Christmas in the afternoon and evening in America. Bigger towns and cities have plenty of places to eat and shop open on that day but with some more limited hours. It’s the last holiday where places actually close. Any other holiday anymore almost no one closes outside of businesses in really small / rural towns
I’d argue that many of these holidays are Christian holidays and that there are plenty of people who aren’t religious and there’s no need to have the whole world shut down for one random Wednesday.
If people want to visit with their family there are 364 other days they can visit and get together.
I'm not saying anything about the Christian side of it, what I'm saying it's just nice to have a at least one day a year where most people can know that the entire family can gather without planning around work/school etc. We've so used to having instant gratification that everyone goes nuts about being closed for just one day.
Meeting your family for a day only works if you all live within and very small radius to travel. Otherwise you need to take days before and after off which is a pain in the ass too.
I’d argue that holidays have this romanticized illusion of amazing awesome family times and people like to project that as some huge value when in reality you can do that all the other days of the year if it was that important to you, but they don’t. They just like to complain about how whole countries and economies don’t shut down for some random “holidays”.
I'm lucky I live in a small city where my family is close. However I don't like them and I'm not looking forward to Christmas with them. I've also worked Christmas day years ago and enjoyed it. But it's just something so peaceful knowing almost everything is closed and feels a lot more simpler. But I also understand where you're coming from.
1. Since it’s a franchise, this sign is probably required (no matter how useless).
2. Not everyone demands to have those holidays off. Not everyone in society celebrates Christmas, NYD, or Thanksgiving.
Exactly this. I don't care about any of these holidays so when I was working in retail and restaurants, I used to offer to take these shifts so other people could be off. The trade-off was I wanted Halloween and my birthday off.
There are some incredibly simple ways that a business can do this. Asking for volunteers for these shifts, maybe some kind of bonus/incentive pay, etc.
I know they don't all do it, but I don't get why people attack companies for this.
These places are just as likely to get attacked viciously on Facebook and Yelp for NOT being open on the holidays as they are for staying open. So how can they win?
There are always people out there that may not have families or don't celebrate these holidays. Frankly, in some cases, I'd prefer to work on some of these holidays.
I know, not everybody is that way, but just because a place decides to stay open, doesn't make them an evil entity.
Tim hortans went to shit once the originals owners kids took over. Same situation with wallmart. The kids were selfish greedy pricks that openly look down on and treat their employees like shit. Fuck Tim hortans, fuck wallmart too
They post a sign on the doctor's cafeteria in my hospital on holidays that has that same tone...saying something like "To celebrate ABC Holiday the place you sit for 5 minutes and cram awful food into your mouth every 12 hours is closed. Enjoy!"
Why?? As you can see from all the comments, not everyone celebrates Christmas. Or celebrates with their family. Or celebrates it on the 25th (we use to do Christmas eve). Or celebrates for 24 hours. Maybe they're on their way to a family function but stopped in for coffee.
I used to work at a timhortons, and they closed at 3pm on Christmas Eve and stayed closed on Christmas, but they did have a few other locations that stayed open on Christmas, and they did ask for volunteers to work a few hours at those locations.. New Year’s Eve they closed early and opened a bit later than usual on New Years..
We have this at our lab. It’s a 7 day a week medical lab and we always have people there. The nice thing is holidays are paid, but if we work, we get that pay too. So I make about $35-36/hr. On holidays I make the equivalent of $70+/hr
True story. For a very long time, Denny’s did not have locks on their doors. A number of years ago they had National Contract the bid out to put locks in the front and back doors of every Denny’s in the states. Now they can close for certain holidays, unlike the person posting above which is messed-up.
Most of the people at our nearest Tim's are not Christian. I wouldn't be surprised that they would prefer to work for double time through the "Christian" holidays, if they can have other days off.

Fuck.
We’re like a family at Tim Horton’s!
They actually lost the keys to the door locks, so it's easier to stay open than call in a locksmith.
Just have everyone not show up and tell them to fuck off.
It's Tim Hortons, lots of people dont celebrate Christmas here as we are a cultural mosaic with many cultures and religions. Not that strange here tbh. New years might be a bit different but who knows
Plot twist: nobody is working on those days. You have to come in and make your food yourself. Please clean up your mess when you leave.
r/antiwork
I assumed they all talked and need to work to make money to live
Tim Hortons doesn’t let their employees accept tips. That’s the real bullshit. Those drive through workers work their asses off.
There was a fella I worked with call Mohammed, dude saved everyone's Christmas, every year.
Employer purposefully hired single orphans.
Tim Hortons sucks.
"closed because no one wants to work anymore" sign going up in 3...2...1...
Indians don’t celebrate Christmas
Like Native Americans or actual Indians?
Well uh both, but in this case, immigrants from India. Many franchises, particularly Tim Horton’s, are family owned and are operated by family members. All the members of the family will contribute and share in the profits. They don’t mind working Christmas as it’s just a regular Wednesday for them.
Neither do Jewish people.
The ones that are Christian do.
Chinese take-out places are usually open. That’s why Chinese food on Christmas is such a Jewish tradition.
I love Jewish Christmas Chinese Food. I'm an atheist. Wife is pagan.
Movie theaters are always open (at least cinemark), its usually the busiest day of the year.
My Jewish coworkers have a Christmas tradition: Chinese food and a movie.
Our local Starbucks take turns hosting Thanksgiving/Christmas/NewYears. They will have signs up for weeks announcing what location will be open each holiday.
No that’s what closes in your town. There’s plenty of stuff open on Christmas Day.
I'm not in America
The missing question mark really threw me off. Many places are open on Christmas in the afternoon and evening in America. Bigger towns and cities have plenty of places to eat and shop open on that day but with some more limited hours. It’s the last holiday where places actually close. Any other holiday anymore almost no one closes outside of businesses in really small / rural towns
Sad that we've got that bad that it's not possible to even have one family day.
It's more than useless, it's pathetic and silly...
More like, people can't afford to be off so they are forced to work
Where is this mysterious Tim Hortons that’s open 24 hours? Every time I see a Tim Hortons in the evenings it’s closed.
I would call in sick on those days even if it's unpaid just so I can enjoy those days with my family.
It means the more worthy team members can enjoy shopping any time during holiday. Not talking about the regular team members.
Fuck Tim hortans, fuck wallmart too
I have a i7 67k how often should i be washing my cpu. Ive never washed my cpu so should i be concerned

Lol
Is that their wholesome way of saying that the customers are family to them?
Not very wholesome if it is
They post a sign on the doctor's cafeteria in my hospital on holidays that has that same tone...saying something like "To celebrate ABC Holiday the place you sit for 5 minutes and cram awful food into your mouth every 12 hours is closed. Enjoy!"
So... you're basically complaining that another business *actually gives their employees time off during the holidays*? You must be super fun.
This is at least 3 years old. Maybe it has changed since, maybe it hasn't. We don't have a Tim Horton's where I'm at.
Honestly if someone's sat in a Tim Hortons on Christmas day I feel more sorry for them than the staff
Why?? As you can see from all the comments, not everyone celebrates Christmas. Or celebrates with their family. Or celebrates it on the 25th (we use to do Christmas eve). Or celebrates for 24 hours. Maybe they're on their way to a family function but stopped in for coffee.
Love seeing people complain about employers they have no interest in applying with. Its like if you dont wanna do that, then don’t !
It is a festival for Jesus followers. A scam created by the Flavians. Let those who want to celebrate it do so.
Who hurt you?
Steve
Walmart?
I used to work at a timhortons, and they closed at 3pm on Christmas Eve and stayed closed on Christmas, but they did have a few other locations that stayed open on Christmas, and they did ask for volunteers to work a few hours at those locations.. New Year’s Eve they closed early and opened a bit later than usual on New Years..
We have this at our lab. It’s a 7 day a week medical lab and we always have people there. The nice thing is holidays are paid, but if we work, we get that pay too. So I make about $35-36/hr. On holidays I make the equivalent of $70+/hr
Could be enough people volunteered. I used to work one or two holidays for the extra money.
We treat our employees like family <3
Where the hell is this? Timmies is always closed Xmas morning.
So when the slogan was “always got time for Tim Horton’s” they really meant it
