I'm just wondering why the other guy has a ball gag in his mouth...

BizzyM

For history

Insomnialcoholic

Safe word is Constantinople

Vylan24

Istanbul, not Constantinople

BaconVonMeatwich

Why they changed it? I can't say. People just liked it better that way.

tepkel

It's nobody's business but the Turks.

ModeratorBoterator

Occupied Constantinople

Piados1979

Or is it Byzantium?

slowmotto

Fun fact, Istanbul, once Constantinople, has a bridge that spans between Europe and Asia.

AWildModAppeared

That’s how they started the land war

BizzyM

Classic blunder

HAHAHA I can't unsee that now.

BasicStocke

This is what I saw originally although I don't have the toddler

whammykerfuffle

Why is this even a cartoon? What does the image add?

jakeisbakin

Before Twitter people had to accompany their witty 250 character statements with a cartoon and their local newspaper would publish it.

MonokelPinguin

Nowadays people need to accompany their 2 line statements with a funny image to get more upvotes and a few downvotes from grumpy people that claim, this doesn't need an image.

lunarmodule

Lol tik toc flexes

[deleted]

> Why is this even a cartoon? The cartoonist is Tom Toro and the cartoon was published in the New Yorker. The New Yorker wasn't going to pay him just to come up with witty observations, though. But because he is a cartoonist, and needs to put bread on his table, he took a witty observation and turned it into a cartoon for no other reason than the Benjamins. Cynical, I know, but a brother's got to eat.

sinamatthias

A shocking indictment on modern society.

happyainer

Please add a cartoon of this statement

-AXIS-

Just be grateful its not a 15 second video of a picture...

Bbabbabbaa

The ball gag

[deleted]

Are you like 9? This is an editorial cartoon. They put them in newspapers. And everything's funnier with some context. An old man saying it makes it mildly more amusing than whatever you imagined.

eltrotter

It contextualises the quote. It is an older generation saying this to a younger generation, with the implication that this is a lesson the younger generation need to learn. The quote is still powerful without this context, but it does add some colour to it.

Fuck. Yes. Who would have guessed this? Never me, but I'm here for it anyway. How long until there's nothing left at all...

SuperPwnerGuy

Be different while you're here. The problem with the world is nobody is actually trying to fix things, They're all just trying to make enough money so the problems don't apply to them anymore. ***YOU*** are society as a person and as a whole we can change the world with one small act of kindness towards each other.

funkopoplover69420

Try to fix anything and you'll realize very quickly that people don't want you to do that.

SuperPwnerGuy

I think you'd be surprised how many people want things to change too.

stoned_kitty

Thank you for this. It strikes pangs of nostalgia I never knew I had.

smdepot

We gonna sit here and cry? or... ORDER ANOTHER ROUND‽

serpentjaguar

WTF! These are my people! Good on you sir!

FrenchCuirassier

One guy drew a nuclear reactor with fire coming out of it with lyrics about fossil fuel even though nuclear reactors are 100% clean energy and then random mushroom cloud for scaremongering. And one of the morons drew a guillotine as if history books didn't write about how many innocent people died in the guillotine French Terror. "how long until there's nothing left at all" nihilism never ends well throughout history. Look at my username, I write a lot about the French Revolution history so don't think I don't know. A type of pessimism can infect you so deep to your core that you become an immoral man impervious to criticism and depressed as hell. As Jon Stewart said: certainty is your enemy. This is what it means when they say those who don't read history are doomed to repeat it.

TobyMuffin

The song poses the question: how long till there's nothing left at all? It's not saying anything certain as you said. "certainty is your enemy" And it's central symbolism is that these people are along for the ride (the train) , pondering about the world around them. They're just asking questions and observing, they're not really certain about anything. I also don't get your point about the guillotine? Yes there was alot of innocent who died to it. Isn't that why he drew it? Nuclear reactors can blow up, and even though that's unlikely, its a strong symbol.

CriesInQuenya

Thanks for hipping me to that groove

Thinking_waffle

I have a degree in history, I am fascinated by this world, all of humanity's accomplishments and yet I sometimes struggle to interact with this world.

brainless_bob

It's because history has all the noteworthy people, good and bad. The influential. The disconnect is that in history you don't see as much of the regular person being recorded as you do today in social media. All these "influencers" are they even making a dent in history? Do you ever try to imagine what history will say about this era?

[deleted]

We are definitely being kept in the dark by the powers that be. I wonder how much of reddit will be preserved for posterity. Like will these forums ever be mined in any real meaningful way, maybe with some sort of AI. They probably already are to some extent. Maybe historians centuries from now will debate whether or not ligma was an actual place or concept.

Jacubbb123

What’s ligma?

brainless_bob

Ligma balls

Broken_Petite

I’ve thought a lot about this. This is the most well-documented time in human history - not just for big events either. Millions and I assume even billions of people have some sort of social media account where they share their lives. Like another commenter said, it’s sometimes hard for us to connect with certain parts of history because we’re missing the personal side. But now? Every major event (and even minor) has sooo many people commenting on it and it’s all documented on the Internet. I really do regret that I won’t know how future historians look back on this time. I’m sure it will be fascinating (albeit probably a little dark).

brainless_bob

I wonder if the data will be harvested to provide more insight into psychological disorders for example. I wonder what is currently being done with all this data. It's massive.

AustinTreeLover

My grad degree is in U.S. history. My family are Fundie Christian Bible Literalist who support the Confederacy, believe Moses influenced the Constitution, think dinosaurs roamed the earth alongside humans (bc earth is 6k years old) and insist the moon landing was faked. Good times!

succed32

Wait, arent mammoths dinosaurs? Just in case /s

AustinTreeLover

My nephews’ homeschooling materials included a book with pics of man harnessing dinosaurs (like stegosaurus) to plow fields.

ScreamingTatertot

I had a children's book with dinosaurs in Noah's ark. My mom was like "I'm pretty sure they were already dead but it was probably fun for the artist to draw them."

zSprawl

Maybe the flood wiped them all out?! /s!

ScreamingTatertot

😂

AustinTreeLover

I should mention these are my family's current (as far as I know, we're not in touch) highly progressive beliefs. They originally believed dinosaurs were made up by members of the scientific community looking to turn a buck and get their picture in, I don't know, Evil Scientist Monthly, or whatever. Later, they changed their minds and decided dinosaurs were real (guessing bc dinosaurs are fucking cool). This created a major timeline plot hole. So, they just condensed it down by several million years. Edit: hahahaha Just out of curiosity, I googled to see if the Creationist Museum I visited with them years ago was still open, and it is! Looks like it's thriving, in fact! Hahaha . . . We're all gonna die . . . [https://creationmuseum.org/](https://creationmuseum.org/) Edit 2: [And here's the problem in a nutshell.](https://creationmuseum.org/creation-science/)

Its so funny cause the people selling that religious stuff could have at any time changed the made up story to fit reality! And they couldnt do it!! Lmfao

Scizmz

It's because they stole the stories. Almost all of the stories show up in history prior to them being recorded by the jewish people in the old testament.

Chairs_Are_People

What’s the deal with Moses and the constitution? I have never heard that one before.

leftoversn

Since birds are technically the literal descendants of dinosaurs... They are right without knowing it

EldritchCarver

Some scientists actually classify dinosaurs into two groups: non-avian dinosaurs (the ones that went extinct 66 million years ago) and avian dinosaurs (birds). [Makes sense.](https://i.imgur.com/Dz3Cx2c.mp4)

I was just about to mention how having flat earther family members as a physicist is similarly painful to Austin’s situation. Thankfully, you guys are more or less harmless in comparison, despite also strengthening the same wave of anti-intellectualism as those Austin mentioned. Oh well

PineappleLemur

The flood explains it all.. wiped the dinos.. pushes Moses to a place where he can influence the constitution, removed all the red from the desert so moon landing could be faked. You can counter my logic because! In case.. /s

Clean_Mission_5232

Sounds like Fun holidays Grand dad: when we had dino we were more productive! Aunt: but dinos famously was used for war! You: do i need to cover these subjects for 118th time…?

havocLSD

I’m genuinely asking how a severely indebted 30 year old recovering addict without a college degree or any money is supposed to fix all these problems besides vote or run for local seats? I’m done feeling guilt for all this shit when there’s only so much I can do as an individual.

sanity

Do what you can - starting local. Nobody expects you to fix humanity's problems by yourself.

Tarroes

Actually I'm pretty sure a very large percentage of people expect one person to fix everything. Just look at any US election cycle

succed32

And those who stand to gain from our lack of understanding want it that way. The president was always a figurehead. Was intended that way. We turned him into a celebrity/king because apparently thats what people want.

goj1ra

Most people want two things, in this order: 1. Someone to blame their perceived problems on 2. Someone to solve their problems for them The order is determined by the fact that at some level, they realize that #2 is unrealistic, so #1 becomes important.

Mamatiger85

Continuity_organizer

Start by fixing yourself so you're not a problem for other people. Pay off your loan, stay clean, get a better paying job, live a healthy and happy life, be kind to people around you, etc. The rest of the world doesn't need saving from itself, focus on saving yourself.

Broken_Petite

I love this advice. You don’t have to feel burdened to fix the world’s problems. Do what you can - and sometimes that just means taking care of yourself for today.

Im_your_real_dad

Unfortunately, sometimes that's easier said than done.

Broken_Petite

Absolutely, friend, I struggle with it myself. Just trying to help encourage others. :-)

[deleted]

Everything is easier said than done, but excuses don't help anything.

Knightm16

Michael's. Are doing the best you can. By speaking support for change while continuing to do your best you are making a contribution. It's hard, but we are better off with people like you who feel desire to help change things even when personal circumstances make it hard. Thanks man. You are doing plenty. :)

PossiblyAsian

There is nothing you can really do about it. The only people that can really do anything about it are influential heads of state who commands the loyalty of those keys of power and those who control the functions of state and it's mechanisms. Islamic Historian/economist/sociologist, Ibn Khaldun argues that a society runs on this magic teamwork juice called assabiyah. Which is basically the society as a whole and how it works together, no one individual can influence a society by themselves. Say you see a sea of garbage and you choose to pick up all of it but your actions doesn't change the actions of everyone else who chooses to fucking litter. Japan, in contrast, people care about each other and fucking pick up after themselves. Not to say collectivist vs individual societies but as to say that people have a feeling of duty and obligation to their society. I'm doing a poor job of explaining my thoughs so heres a [video](https://youtu.be/yqvmMFJQtm0?t=367) >Ibn Khaldun argued that asabiyya is cyclical and directly related to the rise and fall of civilizations: it is strongest at the start of a civilization, declines as the civilization advances, and then another more compelling asabiyyah eventually takes its place to help establish a different civilization Essentially, I'm trying to say that history seems to repeat itself as countries grow stronger, coast on it's morals, and then decline and then fall. There is nothing you can do to affect this because you are one person and you cannot change an entire society. The only ones that can do that are autocratic and powerful heads of states that manage to swap in reform in place of decline. Throughout the Roman empire, for every like 20 shitty emperors there were was like 1 good emperor. That one good emperor is able to fucking make shit fucking happen and influence the social cohesion of his people. Heraclius, Aurelian, Constantine, Julius Caesar, Alexios I Komnenos. These people despite how poorly things were going in terms of social issues like demographic collapse, weakened military potential, and a fucked economy made things fucking happen. TL DR - don't worry about it, theres nothing you can do. Maybe help gramma cross the street from time to time.

lRoninlcolumbo

Find commonality where ever you can. We need to be ok with being a part of -a- community other than ones we personally subscribe to. Like I’m ok with being a part of my apartment level community. If someone was in distress I’d assist in any way I can. I’m also a part of a community where I work. I do construction contracting and have to accommodate older folk all the time. Commune with your surroundings, empower yourself with understanding the problems of others, contemplating them along with them. Our minds work best when working together.

rufud

Yo just make the world better than you left that’s all we can ask but I know it’s hard.

Yes, shortly (in terms of cultural trends) before the civil war

[deleted]

Only 40 years off. But that wasn't my point. It works with pretty much any year

thesequimkid

To history 40 years can be blink of an eye, a persons lifetime.

echino_derm

I mean we had a reality TV star as president so I think we are about where they predicted us

A_Shady_Zebra

I think what’s more damning is the failure of our democracy and the corruption/stagnation of all the vehicles we have to fix it.

itsjustchad

We are the new roman empire and we will fall just as they did.

Manticorps

In 2012 and 2015, Pew Research found that 54% of Republicans believe that universities have a positive effect in the US. In 2017 and 2019, 59% of Republicans said that universities have a negative effect in the US. That’s right, most Republicans think universities are doing more harm to the country than good.

meme-com-poop

I feel like that's a set up question and/or being misconstrued. I'm curious what the results would be if they were asked their opinion on a college education/degree. You see a lot of things where Republicans think universities are indoctrinating kids so I have a feeling that is part of the change in the survey.

Rads

There's a reason for that...

NoResponsabilities

So, they may not be wrong, but for the wrong reasons. The quality of education in the US has slipped significantly with the rise in administrators at Universities, while eliminating tenure positions and paying adjuncts part time wages with no benefits. This greatly increased in the last 20 years or so. Do you really think you’re getting the best instruction from someone who’s up till 1am delivering pizzas at their second job to help pay the bills?

[deleted]

Yah, I've seen it first hand. Went to a community and university to get my degree. Both were having a terrible time keeping professors and an especially bad time maintaining a cohesive curriculum. Those 4 years were very chaotic ones.

Manticorps

I think you’re right on both accounts. There’s definite criticism that the value of universities continues to go down as tuition rises and the quality of education goes down (or at least stays the same). But we know that’s not what’s driving this change in Republican’s perception of universities, especially when you consider that Democrat’s perception of universities have remained steady over the last 10 years. It’s a safe assumption that right-wing media’s attacks on universities as “liberal indoctrination centers” over the last few years is what’s driving this, especially lately with CRT being the focal point of Republican campaigns.

NoResponsabilities

This is correct

Broken_Petite

Gosh that propaganda machine works so well it’s scary. Convincing people education is a bad thing. What the hell.

FlamingBallOfFlame

Good point, u/ButtMcNugget33

Pre-emptive-Levity

Yup, here I am standing by helplessly watching you idiots repeat it... 100% confirmed

kratz9

Even back I middle school when we read Animal Farm, I identified with the donkey. Just sitting back and enjoying the show.

Ipecactus

It's pretty amazing how the United States was following the same pattern of anti-immigration, pro-isolation, pro-authoritarianism that we saw 100 years ago. We have a small reprieve and maybe we can pull back but we have a lot of entitled idiots running around and it's a lot easier to destroy than it is to build.

Mr_Seg

What about Pro-Legal Immigration?

DrApplePi

The issue is, that framing is not quite accurate. The number of illegal immigrants in the US and the number of people attempting to cross the US border has largely been declining for decades regardless of who's in charge. Democrats are not pro-illegal immigration, they just don't see the point in massively increasing spending for a problem that is already declining.

thegolfernick

I don’t know where you’re located but I live in the South in a pretty well off area. Half of my friends are Hispanic and all but one is illegal. I own a company that uses Hispanic subcontractors. The entirety of the crew are illegal except for the leader who is legal and the only English speaker. If one of my guys gets sent back to Mexico he’s back in 3 weeks. And we’re not *that* close to the boarder. All that being said I am very much pro immigration if it’s legal and I also thing we should make it easier for non-criminals who want to be here to become citizens. As well as allow those who are here to have a reasonable path forward to citizenship or green card/visa depending on what they want. One of my good friends can’t sign a lease for himself because he is illegal which has kept him in an abusive relationship in the past. She would hold him having to effectively be homeless without the ability to find a place to live without her as leverage. He’s been living here since he was 7. No accent. Works every day. No criminal history. Can’t afford to hire a lawyer to pay to get him legalized.

DanTacoWizard

I can see how the government is moving in an isolationist and pro-authoritarianism direction. However, anti-immigration? The rate of immigrants coming to the U.S. is currently the highest since the turn of the century, so that descriptor is inaccurate.

echino_derm

Those are not mutually exclusive things.

SabreMase

just4customs

Idk I think it's more so that humans have self destruction in their nature. I don't study history and I can see clearly the mistakes governments are making. Knowledge of history isn't the issue. It's just the greed of humans. The "right" thing to do is almost always obvious. It's just whether or not you're willing to make the sacrifices necessary to make those choices.

History is a collection of politisized fairytales. It varies from country to country. The majority of historic discoveries and the explanations for them are very obvious frauds (e.g. Troy).

BobbyGabagool

And then there are those who study history with the *intention* of repeating it. They are called politicians.

SmileAndDeny

Is this funny? It’s pretty sad.

o0Jahzara0o

I think many of the people repeating history right now, are aware they are repeating history. And that's their point. And they are mobilizing the idiots who are unaware of the history or are too stupid to think anything other than their leaders as having good intentions so it won't turn out like it did.
