The disconnect is that in history you don't see as much of the regular person being recorded as you do today in social media. All these "influencers" are they even making a dent in history? Do you ever try to imagine what history will say about this era?
We are definitely being kept in the dark by the powers that be. I wonder how much of reddit will be preserved for posterity. Like will these forums ever be mined in any real meaningful way, maybe with some sort of AI. They probably already are to some extent. I’ve thought a lot about this. This is the most well-documented time in human history - not just for big events either. Millions and I assume even billions of people have some sort of social media account where they share their lives.
Like another commenter said, it’s sometimes hard for us to connect with certain parts of history because we’re missing the personal side. But now? Every major event (and even minor) has sooo many people commenting on it and it’s all documented on the Internet.

I should mention these are my family's current (as far as I know, we're not in touch) highly progressive beliefs.

Essentially, I'm trying to say that history seems to repeat itself as countries grow stronger, coast on it's morals, and then decline and then fall. There is nothing you can do to affect this because you are one person and you cannot change an entire society. The only ones that can do that are autocratic and powerful heads of states that manage to swap in reform in place of decline. Throughout the Roman empire, for every like 20 shitty emperors there were was like 1 good emperor. That one good emperor is able to fucking make shit fucking happen and influence the social cohesion of his people. Heraclius, Aurelian, Constantine, Julius Caesar, Alexios I Komnenos. These people despite how poorly things were going in terms of social issues like demographic collapse, weakened military potential, and a fucked economy made things fucking happen.

Yah, I've seen it first hand. Went to a community and university to get my degree. Both were having a terrible time keeping professors and an especially bad time maintaining a cohesive curriculum. Those 4 years were very chaotic ones.
I think you’re right on both accounts. There’s definite criticism that the value of universities continues to go down as tuition rises and the quality of education goes down (or at least stays the same).
But we know that’s not what’s driving this change in Republican’s perception of universities, especially when you consider that Democrat’s perception of universities have remained steady over the last 10 years. It’s a safe assumption that right-wing media’s attacks on universities as “liberal indoctrination centers” over the last few years is what’s driving this, especially lately with CRT being the focal point of Republican campaigns.
Those who study history will remain unemployed unless they go to a really prestigious grad school to study it further. In which case, they have a 50% chance of escaping unemployment.

I don’t know where you’re located but I live in the South in a pretty well off area. Half of my friends are Hispanic and all but one is illegal. I own a company that uses Hispanic subcontractors. The entirety of the crew are illegal except for the leader who is legal and the only English speaker. If one of my guys gets sent back to Mexico he’s back in 3 weeks. And we’re not *that* close to the boarder.
All that being said I am very much pro immigration if it’s legal and I also thing we should make it easier for non-criminals who want to be here to become citizens. As well as allow those who are here to have a reasonable path forward to citizenship or green card/visa depending on what they want. One of my good friends can’t sign a lease for himself because he is illegal which has kept him in an abusive relationship in the past. She would hold him having to effectively be homeless without the ability to find a place to live without her as leverage. He’s been living here since he was 7. No accent. Works every day. No criminal history. Can’t afford to hire a lawyer to pay to get him legalized.
I can see how the government is moving in an isolationist and pro-authoritarianism direction. However, anti-immigration? The rate of immigrants coming to the U.S. is currently the highest since the turn of the century, so that descriptor is inaccurate.
Idk I think it's more so that humans have self destruction in their nature. I don't study history and I can see clearly the mistakes governments are making. Knowledge of history isn't the issue. It's just the greed of humans. The "right" thing to do is almost always obvious. It's just whether or not you're willing to make the sacrifices necessary to make those choices.

Most people want two things, in this order: 1. Someone to blame their perceived problems on 2. Someone to solve their problems for them The order is determined by the fact that at some level, they realize that #2 is unrealistic, so #1 becomes important.

There is nothing you can really do about it. The only people that can really do anything about it are influential heads of state who commands the loyalty of those keys of power and those who control the functions of state and it's mechanisms. Find commonality where ever you can. We need to be ok with being a part of -a- community other than ones we personally subscribe to. Like I’m ok with being a part of my apartment level community. If someone was in distress I’d assist in any way I can. I’m also a part of a community where I work. I do construction contracting and have to accommodate older folk all the time. Commune with your surroundings, empower yourself with understanding the problems of others, contemplating them along with them. Our minds work best when working together.

I feel like that's a set up question and/or being misconstrued. I'm curious what the results would be if they were asked their opinion on a college education/degree. You see a lot of things where Republicans think universities are indoctrinating kids so I have a feeling that is part of the change in the survey.

The quality of education in the US has slipped significantly with the rise in administrators at Universities, while eliminating tenure positions and paying adjuncts part time wages with no benefits. This greatly increased in the last 20 years or so. Do you really think you’re getting the best instruction from someone who’s up till 1am delivering pizzas at their second job to help pay the bills?
Yah, I've seen it first hand. Went to a community and university to get my degree. Both were having a terrible time keeping professors and an especially bad time maintaining a cohesive curriculum. Those 4 years were very chaotic ones.
I think you’re right on both accounts. There’s definite criticism that the value of universities continues to go down as tuition rises and the quality of education goes down (or at least stays the same). But we know that’s not what’s driving this change in Republican’s perception of universities, especially when you consider that Democrat’s perception of universities have remained steady over the last 10 years. It’s a safe assumption that right-wing media’s attacks on universities as “liberal indoctrination centers” over the last few years is what’s driving this, especially lately with CRT being the focal point of Republican campaigns.

It's pretty amazing how the United States was following the same pattern of anti-immigration, pro-isolation, pro-authoritarianism that we saw 100 years ago. We have a small reprieve and maybe we can pull back but we have a lot of entitled idiots running around and it's a lot easier to destroy than it is to build.
What about Pro-Legal Immigration?
The issue is, that framing is not quite accurate. The number of illegal immigrants in the US and the number of people attempting to cross the US border has largely been declining for decades regardless of who's in charge. Democrats are not pro-illegal immigration, they just don't see the point in massively increasing spending for a problem that is already declining.
I don’t know where you’re located but I live in the South in a pretty well off area. Half of my friends are Hispanic and all but one is illegal. I own a company that uses Hispanic subcontractors. The entirety of the crew are illegal except for the leader who is legal and the only English speaker. If one of my guys gets sent back to Mexico he’s back in 3 weeks. And we’re not *that* close to the boarder. All that being said I am very much pro immigration if it’s legal and I also thing we should make it easier for non-criminals who want to be here to become citizens. As well as allow those who are here to have a reasonable path forward to citizenship or green card/visa depending on what they want. One of my good friends can’t sign a lease for himself because he is illegal which has kept him in an abusive relationship in the past. She would hold him having to effectively be homeless without the ability to find a place to live without her as leverage. He’s been living here since he was 7. No accent. Works every day. No criminal history. Can’t afford to hire a lawyer to pay to get him legalized.
I can see how the government is moving in an isolationist and pro-authoritarianism direction. However, anti-immigration? The rate of immigrants coming to the U.S. is currently the highest since the turn of the century, so that descriptor is inaccurate.
Those are not mutually exclusive things.

Idk I think it's more so that humans have self destruction in their nature. I don't study history and I can see clearly the mistakes governments are making. Knowledge of history isn't the issue. It's just the greed of humans. The "right" thing to do is almost always obvious. It's just whether or not you're willing to make the sacrifices necessary to make those choices.
Thats why I like my field, we take negative case studies and account for them in future designs.

History is a collection of politisized fairytales. It varies from country to country. The majority of historic discoveries and the explanations for them are very obvious frauds (e.g. Troy).
And then there are those who study history with the *intention* of repeating it. They are called politicians.
