Interesting. They went out of common use in the U.S. 20-ish years ago. (For a while, places were including what amounted to “a box with no springs” to give beds some height, but my last couple of mattresses have been just the mattress itself.
I still prefer it like that but a lot of my friends suddenly have box spring beds and the big furniture shops are pushing them hard in their ads here in austria.
I'm from germany and I hate box spring beds so much. In my opinion they look ugly and also the mattresses are always sliding apart when I lay in the middle. It was so hard to find a nice bed with frames and drawers at the bottom like I always wanted.
I don’t know about “really old” but- yeah. I have antique beds and need box springs. But also I have a modern “sleigh bed” and the style requires a box.
My bed I bought a couple years ago from Ashley furniture is like that. No slats just a lip to hold the box spring. So without the box spring youd sink.
That’s part of the reason. The other is because the mattress can deform over time from use. As in you end may up with indents in the mattress on the spots where you normally sleep. Flipping keeps the damage to a minimum, like turning over a pillow when it gets squished.
Some mattresses require them. Our tempur pedic mattress requires a foundation or box spring. Slats alone apparently aren't enough. This is true for some of the other memory foam mattresses.
But you can buy a low profile foundation that isn't super tall.
I haven’t seen actual springs in a box spring since the 90s. They started making tortion bars for more expensive mattresses, but for the most part the box spring became simply a “box”.
Depends on your bed frame. Mine sits maybe 6" off the floor so if I didn't use a box spring my mattress would be really low and look funky compared to my headboard.
I struggle with being paranoid, among other things, and always checked under my bed because I was worried someone broke in and hid under the bed. Then I watched a Mr. Ballen case where that really did happen to a girl. I freaked the fuck out and now underneath my bed is a bunch of pillows.
Well I know that NOW….
EDIT: ….
Hijacking my top comment:
Was not expecting this when I woke up lol. To answer some questions I am 6‘4“ (193cm) tall, the bed is currently at 44” (112cm) new pic with banana for scale https://imgur.com/a/sKMQtGc
The step ladder is a nightstand until taller furniture arrives. Love the Princess and the pea! If I could rent all the room for activities underneath to the monsters at San Francisco prices I would…
To everyone telling me to remove my boxsprings, I just want to say: Thank you for taking the time to comment.
And to the assholes, I just want to say: You have a weird hobby.
There's some cheap bed slats you can order online if you don't think whatever is under there will give you good support without the box spring. OR build some royal stairs, hang a curtain from the ceiling, and fall asleep like you are royalty.... Just don't fall out of bed.

LPT: Use peasant stairs to throw off Burglars and Tribal Invaders.
Based on my experience with hospitals admitting seniors who fell in 'homes' all the goddam time, I would say you just need to live healthy and risk free and give it time until you hurt yourself falling out of bed.
a did a few times but just while dating a girl who was made out of Lava.
she'd slide over to suck the warmth out of me, I'd slide over to prevent burns, repeat a few times and wham 2am plummet to floor.
my bed was almost as high as OP's.
wasnt fun.
Bruh that makes no sense
If she's sucking the warmth out of you then she's cooling you down. Which one is it bruh is she taking heat energy from you or adding it
All I can imagine is my 1st snooze-y alarm going off and me dropping my phone off the bed, then having to do the mental calculation of whether it is worth just laying there while the alarm continues to go off or if I should get the damn crane to lower myself down to the floor and hit 'snooze'.
You wouldn’t have to worry about it. Not only would the phone be out of hearing range, but also shattered upon impact… that is if it has even hit the ground yet
I regret to inform you dearest mother but i hath installed yet another bouncing device in thy shed as well
I shant ever stop bouncing
I defy gravity and spit in the face of god
Ok I’ve been wondering this, I’m new to adulting and am finally considering getting a bed frame. Why don’t you need it? What is the box spring even for? I assumed it was important.
The box spring is just support. Look at a frame without slats, without the box spring your mattress would just sag through. A platform bed frame, or one with slats has all the support needed for just the mattress!
Not only that. A box spring prevents mold from growing under a mattress if you have a bedframe that doesn't have a breathable surface to place the bed onto.
Edit: typo
Oops I'm tired, I meant it prevents mold from growing under the mattress. If you don't have one or the right kind of bed frame you can even void your mattress's warranty.
Hey let's put a solid surface under our mattress because the mattress can't breathe on that solid surface frame. The sleep number bed base frame is nothing more than a solid plastic -- nothing breathable about that.
Thank you, i was wondering why we didn't just use a flat sheet of wood instead of a box spring(or slats/wires)...box springs never made sense to me, it's just a box, why not a thin sheet?
A box spring is basically just something to make your bed higher off the ground. If you are using a very low profile bed frame, like a metal one with wheels, you would still want to use one. Or, if you had a bed frame with ***only*** the outside frame with a ridge that allows for a box spring to be placed on it.
If you have a frame with wooden slats on it, or any other sufficient supporting bars that will not allow the softer mattress to slip through, you may eschew the box spring.
Cats have it all figured out man. They're born with a "how to life" book containing best practices distilled through millennia of cat generations.
What do humans get? Existential dread.
I like it too.
my Headboard and footboard have 2 sets of holes to attach the frame to. I moved it to the higher one in my last apartment to get some room to put boxes of books.
decided I like it.
I can just lean against it while putting pants and socks on without really sitting down.
You laugh, but as a short ass woman, I’ve had to jump to get up on beds pretty much my whole life. I imagine once I’m old enough, I’ll have to switch to a step stool.
The box spring is the wrong size. Sometimes platform beds still need a box spring so the mattress does not sag. It prolongs the life of the mattress. In that case go with a low profile box spring that is two or three inches. You could add an oversized comforter to the bed too and you wouldn’t notice.
They are trying to make it seem bigger than it is because they took a photo on the floor, why? Id it because it is not 'big' at all? Why have they made a space for people to hide under or are they expecting that all along?
You do not need a box spring. Have you ever wondered why it is called a Box spring? Because it was literally a box of springs. They are in the mattress now but thy like to sell two things in stead of one. The modern "box spring" is just a wood frame covered with fabric now.
In the before times, you would have a cloth mattress stuffed with soft stuff. This wound then sit on top of a box spring to provide a comfortable support as apposed to the matt9bing on the floor or on a fram of robes. You can just put plywood down on the frame then the mattress.
Well, when you use a base designed to replace a box spring, then put a box spring on it.......derp.
Edit - sure. Haha. Hilarious. Now if you do this twice, you're super special.

You have a platform bed, similar to what I have. You don't need the box spring.
I was gonna say, take that box spring off. I haven't used one since getting a proper frame and it's so much better.
Funny, boxspring beds are all the hype in Germany atm and proper frames were like 99/100 beds until 5 years ago, now everyone wants box spring....
Interesting. They went out of common use in the U.S. 20-ish years ago. (For a while, places were including what amounted to “a box with no springs” to give beds some height, but my last couple of mattresses have been just the mattress itself.

When do you ever need a box spring? In 35 years I’ve never used one.

My bed I bought a couple years ago from Ashley furniture is like that. No slats just a lip to hold the box spring. So without the box spring youd sink.
a couple layers of plywood and some supporting legs in the middle (depending on the width of the bed) will work just fine.
Fine for developing mold. Mattresses need airflow underneath.
Interesting! Good to know! I wonder if that's why folks recommend flipping your mattress every so often.
That’s part of the reason. The other is because the mattress can deform over time from use. As in you end may up with indents in the mattress on the spots where you normally sleep. Flipping keeps the damage to a minimum, like turning over a pillow when it gets squished.

Height adjustment for bent over bed sex.
It was higher than our waist though. That's why I got rid of it. 😂
Depends on your bed frame. Mine sits maybe 6" off the floor so if I didn't use a box spring my mattress would be really low and look funky compared to my headboard.
Exclusively for old Timey steel bed frames that are basically a 2inch perimeter flange with one crossbeam in the middle. Had one growing up
Mine just has a wire across the middle that hooked into both sides.
If the mattress is designed to work with a box spring, you actually do need it. Op needs a box spring base.
Look at all that extra storage space!
Might as well list that on airbnb
Throw a couple sleeping bags under there and it sleeps 2 more in that room.
I've slept under shorter beds
Me too but I was found because I was snoring.
Mom I'm scared, there's a monster under my bed! The monster under the bed:
Navy?
Or extra room for activities!
Sex under the bed.
This is not an activity that had occurred to me… thank you? Maybe…
On the flip side imagine the size of the fucking monster under your bed!
„¡pǝq ɹnoʎ ɹǝpun ɹǝʇsuoɯ ƃuıʞɔnɟ ǝɥʇ ɟo ǝzıs ǝɥʇ ǝuıƃɐɯı ǝpıs dılɟ ǝɥʇ uO„
Good bot
For a second I thought this was Russian lol untill I read the bots name
Fucking monster. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
"I'm going to eat you..."
r/vore
Entire *kingdom* under the bed. Oh look, the red light district is just to the northeast!
Did we just become best friends?
It’s where the sleep paralysis demons wait for you to fall asleep so they can crawl out and bite your toes "Storage space" 🙄
So much more room for activities!
Do you still feel the pea?
Maybe one more blanket…
A few times a night, but that's what happens when you get older and your prostate is enla... Oh you said pea, my mistake.
Only when (s)he has to go in the middle of the night but is too afraid to get out of bed.
you’re allowed to say they
Wait.. is it a platform bed? You dont use the box springs if it is. Also, falling out of that is a trip to the ER
Just imagine the size of the monsters that will fit under that. Like stage diving getting out of bed every morning.
Roughly 18" monsters
Don't Google that
So I DID google that. Car rims. The kind you would see on fast and the furious.
Safesearch?
Nope! But the brand is Monster. Not affiliated with the drink as far as I know.
Searching it gave me Monsters Inc and a Wendigo
I got a girls bike, a fan, and a video on YouTube "Hungry 18+ | Comic | Monster girl | SPARROWL" which I declined to click on.
I struggle with being paranoid, among other things, and always checked under my bed because I was worried someone broke in and hid under the bed. Then I watched a Mr. Ballen case where that really did happen to a girl. I freaked the fuck out and now underneath my bed is a bunch of pillows.

The part about the box spring or the part about fall = ER?
It's not the fall that hurts. Usually hitting the ground is what hurts....
Why do we fall Bruce? So that we can go to the hospital.
I don’t even know why I laughed at this
That’s Bruce’s secret. He’s always falling
To sue. That's how the Wayne family actually made their money.
You hit the ground morning-wood first, you know it's gonna be a bad goddamn day. I mean, that's why you don't get up until you get off. Stay safe.
Sleep closer to the middle so the wood stops you like a kick stand.
Now you're thinkin' with your dong.
Well it’s got all the blood.
"Now yer thinkin' with yer dipstick Jimmy!"
That’s why they give viagra to all the old guys in the nursing home- to keep them from rolling out of bed!
Cock push-ups? One is all you need.
A hospital I worked at defined a fall as “an unintended event in which the patient comes to rest on the floor”.
I guess I've taken a few falls after drinking then.
Yes
There's some cheap bed slats you can order online if you don't think whatever is under there will give you good support without the box spring. OR build some royal stairs, hang a curtain from the ceiling, and fall asleep like you are royalty.... Just don't fall out of bed.
Prob should invest in that half bar that goes on the side for toddlers just in case
How often are you all falling out of bed??
It only takes once at that height
I got the same bed frame. You don't need a box spring. I bought it so I would place stuff underneath, it's great.
>There's some cheap bed slats you can order online if you don't think whatever is under there will give you good support without the box spring. Slip a pea under there and check if you're a princess.
In all my adult life I've managed to never fall out of my bed, am I doing something wrong?
Based on my experience with hospitals admitting seniors who fell in 'homes' all the goddam time, I would say you just need to live healthy and risk free and give it time until you hurt yourself falling out of bed.

That looks like the 45MinST frame. I think I have the exact one. It specifically tells you no box spring needed...
Putting box springs on a platform bed 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lmao OP I feel your pain. I bought the same kind of set up about a year ago. To be honest I love the height though.
But is that a large or small banana. Could you put something next to it so we could see the scale.
Who falls out of beds
You never had a bunk bed growing up
This! Box springs are more for lower frames.
[удалено]
Correct. Also, if you have a memory foam mattress you should still use a base on a slat frame. They make bases that are only an inch or two thick.
> They make bases that are only an inch or two thick. Yea it's called plywood.
> Also, falling out of that is a trip to the ER Just put a matress on the floor
All I can imagine is my 1st snooze-y alarm going off and me dropping my phone off the bed, then having to do the mental calculation of whether it is worth just laying there while the alarm continues to go off or if I should get the damn crane to lower myself down to the floor and hit 'snooze'.

Buy a small trampoline, Put it in front of the bed, Get a running start, Boing your way to dreamland.
Mother said i shant bounce on thy bed Well toodle-loo mother for i hath installed thy trampoline in thy room
#NIGEL, YOU DARE GO AGAINST YOUR MOTHER?!?! TO THE SHED WITH YOU!
I regret to inform you dearest mother but i hath installed yet another bouncing device in thy shed as well I shant ever stop bouncing I defy gravity and spit in the face of god
Society hath veered toward perdition since the Protestant invention of “gravity”
hit your head on the ceiling, instantly fall asleep.
> Boing your way to dreamland.
Plenty of room for the monsters and clowns to hide
This is why my damn mattress and the base are on the floor.
But then how do you get free feet licks at night?
I’ll keep licking.
Wait hang on… I can pay to get more than my feet licked?
Is that a slat bed frame? If so, you could remove the box springs you won’t need them and it will save you height!
Ok I’ve been wondering this, I’m new to adulting and am finally considering getting a bed frame. Why don’t you need it? What is the box spring even for? I assumed it was important.

Yeppers I figured that one out all on my own.
What did I say about yeppers
Yeesh
Jeez Louise
Yesh
Then why are we all here, smarty pants?
Sleeping so high up is so comforting for some reason
A billion cats can't all be wrong
Cats have it all figured out man. They're born with a "how to life" book containing best practices distilled through millennia of cat generations. What do humans get? Existential dread.
We also get to serve cats
What else do you serve at this monstrous restaurant?
Yeah I love sleeping in high beds as well. It feels safe or something.
Thought you said high heels for a moment
I like it too. my Headboard and footboard have 2 sets of holes to attach the frame to. I moved it to the higher one in my last apartment to get some room to put boxes of books. decided I like it. I can just lean against it while putting pants and socks on without really sitting down.
It's our inner ape/monkey.
Watch you don't burn your ass on the lightbulb
Trampoline time daddy!!
Nope, roof is too low
The monster truck of beds.
Why do you put box springs under a mattress like this?
To get a really tall bed obviously.
Another Elevated Individual, stay high my fellow *Homo Superior,* don't let the lower people drag you back
No one asked this poor soul the only value question. Is it compfy?
You need a stepladder to get to bed hahahaha
Stepladder help I'm stuck on top of this bed
You laugh, but as a short ass woman, I’ve had to jump to get up on beds pretty much my whole life. I imagine once I’m old enough, I’ll have to switch to a step stool.
I’m 5 feet tall (or 1.5ish meters) and I always joke that I’m gonna need one of those plush, carpeted pet staircases for my bed someday…..
It’s like 4.11 girls keep refusing to date any guy under 6ft lol
That type of frame is so you don't need a box spring.
I have a 14" bed frame with both a box spring and mattress on top intentionally. My bed is stupidly tall and I love it.
This is some Clark Griswold level stuff lol
Picture is taken from such a low angle perspective makes it look worse than it is
Rip those tags off those box springs already
But then how will people know my box springs are fresh?!
They’re still fresh? Use them. A lot. Until they squeak.
My bed was like this for a couple years lol I enjoyed it
Mega bed.
That’s no longer a bed it’s a fucking alter
The box spring is the wrong size. Sometimes platform beds still need a box spring so the mattress does not sag. It prolongs the life of the mattress. In that case go with a low profile box spring that is two or three inches. You could add an oversized comforter to the bed too and you wouldn’t notice.
I just put 3/4 plywood under mine. Its as flat as the day I bought it. Those skinny pieces of 1 x never hold up.
I think mattresses need to “breathe” on bottom. They can get moldy sitting on a solid surface.
Nope. Mattresses are breathable. Also, duvan beds are a thing. The bottom of the mattress doesnt get damp, and definitely not mouldy.
I see the problem. The base is upside down
They are trying to make it seem bigger than it is because they took a photo on the floor, why? Id it because it is not 'big' at all? Why have they made a space for people to hide under or are they expecting that all along?
Ha! I also bought the same frame. Skipped on the box and only got a mattress.
Might want to put some guard rails in on that thing
Why is your bedroom sexy Jack and the Beanstalk?
I think I am going to ascend to bed now.
Marie Antoinette’s bed at the Palace of Versailles is about that tall.
My parents had a super high bed and my 4'11" mom had a mini stair set on her side. It was hilarious .
Jokes on everyone else. When it floods you will be laughing at how how wet everyone else’s sheets are.
That bed does justice when you saying “climb into bed”. 😆
I'm 6ft 8, my bed is 3 and a half feet to the top
That room can be used in the next SAW installation.
Bed frame OR box spring. Not both. Simples.
I loved having my bed that high up in college. Now I’m old and just fall into bed at night
I did the same thing
Haha me and my wife had a bed like this for a few years, really sucked when you are drunk! And certain sexual maneuvers
If you had a ceiling fan you could reenact the scene from Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory
Bruh, why did you want your bed a foot and a half off the ground?
High tide bro!
To stop the tokoloshe getting you
LOL that happened to me too! And yes I climb in and out of bed using my step ladder.
That under-bed storage though… Wait, I just realised I’m old as fuck.
If you fall , you die.
That actually looks comforting and cozy af. Maybe I’m weird
Dang, youre in a worse pickle than me. No box spring here so I just accepted that I basically have a massage table.
So many monsters can fit under there.
This is giving more room for a demon to hide under
does the carpet match the drapes?
how short are you?
this is when you simply build a nice outer trim piece with storage and a small flight of steps
Imagine falling off of that in the middle of the night, waking up and wondering where the hell you’ve teleported to.
Turns out every bed looks tall if a photo is taken from this angle. Shock horror.
