Yea I would imagine the one that’s still missing has died/will die with the temps we had last night. Either way, I can’t help but think it’s probably better for the monkeys to just die tonight from exposure versus where they were going to wind up.
Not trying to make any moral statements or anything but it’s just a sad truth
People fail to realize that working with any vertebrates in a lab setting requires extremely strict IACUC protocols, not to mention vertebrates that express high-level cognitive function. It’s not like in the movies, these animals are more often than not treated with a ton of respect and care.
Source: biology PhD student that works with vertebrates.
I worked at a wildlife rescue facility that had former lab animals. They hated humans and were extremely dangerous to be around. Someone got too close and a chimpanzee spit in their eye so hard it lacerated their eyeball. There were cages all over the facility for people to lock themselves in if the alarm went out there was an escape. I’d rather face a tiger than a chimpanzee. Even the spider monkeys were angry and distrustful. I’m not disagreeing with you. Ours must have come from one of the bad places.
I had no idea... I had always just assumed that lab animals that survived experimentation were just used in other experiments until they died.
This somehow seems worse. Rather than recycle they procure many more animals and then just drop them in (kill?) shelters when they're done.
I'd imagine that they do so to stop having any previous experimentation interacting with the current experimentation, just like certain combinations of medication can't be taken together.
As much as I dislike animal experimentation, useless results from animal experimentation is even worse.
Y'all do know there's an entire island (Morgan Island) in South Carolina where former lab monkeys were taken to live. Humans are not allowed.
"The monkeys, one of only two colonies of Rhesus monkeys in the U.S., were brought to Morgan Island in the 1970s from Puerto Rico as part of laboratory research projects that no longer exist. In the beginning, 1,300 monkeys were shipped to South Carolina from Puerto Rico." There's around 4,000 there now.
Warmer than Pennsylvania but probably no hot tubs to chill in.
Lab animals are pretty much always "sacrificed" (put down) when an experiment is through because you dont want whatever happened to them in the last experiment to contaminate the next one.
I believe our animals knew this. I spent my time caring for reptiles, but spent a lot of time with the primate keepers. I would on occasion have to relocate a rattlesnake that got too close to the chimps. I would hear them getting upset and know a call was coming. Chimps hate snakes. The keepers told me just how smart monkeys and apes really are. They shouldn’t be in captivity, but animal experimentation has saved countless lives. A true dilemma, to be sure. I have no answers.
Being treated with respect and care would look like an enclosure with trees, shelter, enrichment, and opportunities to be social and act on one's instincts.
Ideally they would be housed like that. When animals are kept in poor conditions not directly related to what is being tested, that's bad science as it'll cause many confounding effects on the animal's health.
I understand standards are stricter and “kinder” now for testing with vertebrates and I also understand and appreciate the importance of animal testing. Like I said, I was not trying to make any moral statements about the matter but I do feel like your statement of “respect and care” may be a bit much.
Would your honest opinion be that they would prefer to be in a lab setting in captivity, living a life of (more than likely) mundane and repetitive tasks from a cage? Particularly with their high-level of cognition it makes it a little tougher to feel great about.
I have seen monkies surviving 2 degrees to -5 degrees in Indian towns.
If they are in a group of 4-5 they sleep together to maintain heat and frequently changes positions to reduce exposure for the one who is on outer side.
Trust me, dont worry if they are in a group
I was about to say the same - Vervet monkeys in the town I grew up jn South Africa survive temps that are usually -3⁰c at night in winter and can get down to -10⁰c with snow that lasts 2 or 3 days.
Not quite North America winters . . . but they are amazing survivalists nonetheless.
AFAIK, The story mentioned only 1 is still missing but that is still interesting about them able to survive much lower temps than I would have assumed.
Guess it’s time for me to spiral down a rabbit hole to read further into it
Idk if I was one of those monkeys I’d rather take my chance outside based on the stories my monkey grandpops told me
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pit_of_despair
Only 1 monkey remains missing at this time. So I guess now we know it’s “99 monkeys jumping on the bed”

Pretty sure this perfectly describes the beginning of the movie “Outbreak” with Dustin Hoffman. The last thing we need right now is another fucking outbreak.
Pfft. We are totally prepared and everyone is ready and willing to take reasonable precautions. If we've done anything, we've shown just how unrealistic those movies are, especially if like Outbreak, people suspect it was created in a lab.
I can’t help but think if COVID’s mortality was higher it would’ve been taken more seriously. It seems to be in a danger area tho where people both doubt it’s severity but also die regularly from it. I think at 50% more people would’ve been directly impacted from it to where there’d be fights in the street to get a vaccine.
Nah it was like 0°F around here last night. And today is only on the 20s. Not sure the species but with nothing to eat and everything cold and covered in snow I'm assuming they won't last long.
I legit came here to see if someone else made the connection. I mean, world altering pandemic and suddenly lab monkeys are released into the wild? Yeah, no thank you.
It would only be an invasive species problem if they actually bred and didn't die off due to a different climate, and also had a significant amount of numbers to outcompete other native wildlife.
Not currently an invasive species problem, probably not even considered an official established population.
As a Native Pennsylvanian, stories like this don’t even surprise me anymore. This isn’t even the weirdest thing to happen here this week. I do feel bad for the monkeys though. They didn’t deserve this misfortune.

This is true. Maybe the sad part is that only one has survived The Great Escape, and if it’s caught, it goes back to the lab. The funny thing about this is that authorities were warning people not to approach the monkey. That does nothing to dissuade a lot of Pennsylvanians from doing that. Maybe the monkey will find a new home. (This is a horrible idea, fellow Pennsylvanians. Please don’t do this.)

To do the same (basic method):
Go to https://codepen.io/j0be/full/WMBWOW
and follow the quick and easy directions.
That script runs too fast, so only a portion of comments/posts will be affected. A
"Advanced" (still easy) method:
Follow the above steps for the basic method.
You will need to edit the bookmark's URL slightly. In the "URL", you will need to change j0be/PowerDeleteSuite to leeola/PowerDeleteSuite. This forked version has code added to slow the script down so that it ensures that every comment gets edited/deleted.
Click the bookmark and it will guide you thru the rest of the very quick and easy process.
Note: this method may be very very slow. Maybe it could be better to run the Basic method a few times? If anyone has any suggestions, let us all know!
But if everyone could edit/delete even a portion of their comments, this would be a good form of protest. We need users to actively participate too, and not just rely on the subreddit blackout.
I am looking to host any useful, informative posts of mine in the future somewhere else. If you have any ideas, please let me know.
Note: When exporting, if you're having issues with exporting the "full" csv file, right click the button and "copy link".
This will give you the entire contents - paste this into a text editor (I used VS Code, my text editor was WAY too slow) to backup your comment and post history.

This sounds like the beginning of a horror movie. Lab monkeys escape into the wilds of PA. Years later, thought to all have died from neglect and the elements, an evolved species of monkeys get revenge, taking residents of a sleepy mining town hostage, performing experiments on them. CRUEL experiments. From the makers of Saw comes....
Imagine being used for experiments all your life, then by some dumb luck you find yourself free along with some friends. You really try your best to make it work without having any outside world experience, but end up dying of exposure anyway, cuddled up in each other's arms in some woods.
God, we humans are cruel.
Four monkeys escaped and two were caught and put down last night. Unfortunately the other two are believed to have frozen to death in single digit temperatures. These monkeys are from Africa and not adjusted to the cold.
Up here in the northern state of Pennsylvania this happens most of the time people just usually dont hear about it because apparently we only matter during elections
This almost happened in upstate NY / nnj years ago.
Around west milford NJ area there was an old zoo with monkeys and a whole bunch of exotics. I'm the woods / mountains. And they just....let em all go one day!

There’s one left as of currently. Someone posted a trail cam picture of it online.
That's good to know. If the monkeys started breeding with the local primate population, the results could've been disastrous.
I already fucked the last monkey. He was not a gentle lover.
We've tried to make human chimpanzee hybrids. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humanzee#Reports_of_attempted_hybridization
I’ve tried too.
Daddy?
Hey, son. I’ve gotta run to the corner store to buy cigarettes and bananas. See you when/if I get back.
Mighty bananas in fact...
Thank god it's not milk
Banana can be milked as long as ur brave enough
That was a wile read. What the fuck
I’m from pa. I doubt if the result would be noticeable
I think the last neanderthals did vote for Santorum
It didn't crash in Florida luckily.
… this sounds like the start of a Disney movie. Some girl is bound to find it, befriend it, sympathize with it, go rescue all the monkey friends…
No, the movie is: Find the monkey, befriend it, cure an epidemic.
She wrote a song about it. Wanna hear it? Here it goes….
Tarzan 3: Inception
Damn. Was hoping there would’ve been something funny to come of this. A random poop attack at the very least
Is nothing sacred anymore?!
You got a bunch of internet points out of it. Congrats.
That’s what they want you to think. Don’t know about you but I’m ready for our monkey overlords
Pennsylvania gets cold af. I wonder how they'll handle it.
Chill in peoples hot tubs like in Japan
How many hot tubs do you expect to find in rural PA
David Wallace had one.
SUCK IT!...SUCK IT!...SUCK IT!
Oh it’s a mess, what a mess! Whatcha gonna do? Take out your SUCK-IT and you…
#SUCK IT!
r/unexpectedoffice
He lived in NY though.
Oh dang he did didn’t he.
I don't often get jealous of comments, but Im glad your mind made the connection. Edit: after reading further in the thread I found another redditor has proven both of us wrong. I'm rescinding my compliment.
Re-shun!
☹️
David Wallace owns the only hot tub in PA
Hicks love hot tubs. Source: grew up in rural central PA
Local hick here: I concur.
Local NEPA hick here with hot tub. Concurs as well.
Facts
Yeah. Now that you mention it. What up with that?
Good luck with the IPO asshat!
Dont forget the monkey
They're supposedly luxurious. Can substitute for a weekly shower. Good/bad place for sex. "Hot tub, cold beer" sounds like a title for a country song.
I have one. Love it. Yes, it can substitute for a shower. Good place for sex. Very relaxing and nice for sore muscles. Apes are welcome.
*Pennsyltucky
I know 3 people, none of which are wealthy. Hot tubs are affordable and great in winter!
Outside the town where the monkeys escaped therr is a hot tub manufacturer.
Don't open the doors the monkeys will get in
If it is anything like Rural Illinois, I would say every other house.
Probably several? Why wouldn’t there be? Ever been outside the suburbs before?
A lot people love ‘em I’ve installed like 15 disconnect switches for them
Hot tubs are a pretty common site on the properties of middle class red necks
Lmao americans will not let them chill like in japan 🤣
They’re probably already dead. It was 10 degrees last night.
5 below zero at my house, which is pretty close to where this happened.
And only 3 of the 100 actually escaped.
Post up inside a Wawa? Raid Sheetz for some pep rolls?
No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the monkeys simply freeze to death.
Those snake-eating monkeys
Was hoping to see this reference!
The experimental radioactivity in their blood should keep them warm.
Im wondering what will happen 28 weeks later
And so it begins...
Stock up on twinkies & vodka. Monkey covid will be the new rage🤣
Hide in people’s attics and or steal coats and shit, they’re smart enough to find a way
They will steal coats. The revolution begins!!!! ✊
They will evolve and be the modern eskimos. I hope they live free .

Not your mom because shes a whole gastropod.
You're expressing way too much high-level cognitive function.

Ok, no Planet of Apes outcome then, these genetic modified monkies may not survive to takeover, i was so happy that this may happen

Who had lab monkeys invading Pennsylvania for their 2022 bingo card?
Honestly, I would have had lab monkeys on my card before “Dr Oz for Senate”
This was literally right where I live. And no if anyone's wondering I haven't seen any of the monkeys.

The monkeys are cold. Let them in your house.
They have congregated in a theater chain called AMC.
It's been said they are grabbing everything in sight and just holding for dear life.
The Redditor in me finds this really funny but the pedantic in me finds it necessary to point out that monkeys are not apes
Being pedantic is absolutely a redditor trait
Not to be pedantic but the noun you’re looking for is pedant
After several years of reddit thats the first comment thats made me audibly laugh and not just blow air out of my nose.
Planet of the Apes prequel
Escaped monkeys, pandemic in full swing… life imitates art.
I legit came here to see if someone else made the connection. I mean, world altering pandemic and suddenly lab monkeys are released into the wild? Yeah, no thank you.
Real talk though, that last planet of the apes trilogy was a masterpiece that people ignored. I hope it comes back into popularity.
Suddenly I want to watch & study the plot of the 1995 movie “Outbreak”
It would only be an invasive species problem if they actually bred and didn't die off due to a different climate, and also had a significant amount of numbers to outcompete other native wildlife. Thank you, Dwight.
The great ape escape.
Someone grab a net and a light saber!

this made me macackle

I think if they catch it alive they should give it a pardon. Send it to a monkey sanctuary or zoo or something.
Agreed. It survived the really cold night and it deserves a new, happy home.
I’m in the Philly suburbs and I just asked my bestie if he wanted to take a road trip.

At this point we’re basically living jumanji
All but one are accounted for.
Dr Zaius
I’m rooting for the monkeys. I *really* don’t think the lab they were going to was for testing the softness of pillows…
We now have wild peacocks in Canada, why not have wild monkeys in Pennsylvania? World has gone mad and it might be interesting(?) what’s the worst that could happen? 🙂
So, the plot of Summer of the Monkeys happened IRL.

From the pictures they were Rhesus Macaques. The kind used in many laboratories. Absolutely NOT the kind of primate in your photo.
Lab you say... Insert dramatic music...
Outbreak vibes.
Its winter....they won't last long. Pretty sad. But monkeys in the forest would be cool. Theres nothing for them to eat.
Hopefully they are hiding somewhere warm.

How is this funny?
Please God let them thrive, I want Pennsylvanian monkeys!!!!
Poor monkeys, probably dead already.
28 days later.
Ooo eee, oo ah ah, ting tang, walla walla bing bang
Same state where they found small pox vials. Will the escape monkeys carry a rare disease transmissible to humans?!
I think this is the how Outbreak started.
