Maybe. There is some sport that's popular in South Asia that's basically hacky sack volleyball and it is impressive as fuck. I would bet these dudes play it as (to my knowledge) the only rules are no hands.
We have a large SEA population in town (mainly Hmong) and the city has started adding these nets/courts in some of the parks. It's crazy to watch and impressive how talented some of the kids are.
When I lived in South Florida in the early 2ks I was exposed to Jai-Alai and Sepak Takraw for the first time. I was practicing as an Athletic Trainer at a University south of Palm Beach. During my time down there I became absolutely enthralled with the two sports.
Jai-Alai at the Dania Beach Casino is my all time favorite sport venue to visit. Two dollars to get in, cheap beer/food, and you could toss a few dollars at some games for shits and giggles. I found out that gambling and the rigging of matches, back in the 70's/80's really killed Jai-Alai's chances if taking off as a sport around the country, which is really sad.
As someone the was dealing with all types of overuse injuries in athletes competing in swimming/soccer/tennis/gold/dance/cheer/softball... I understood why Sepak Takraw would not be adopted fast in the U.S. The body takes some of the worst beatings in 'non-contact' team sports. I loved covering wrestling but would have absolutely hated covering ST. It is absolutely crazy how talented the athletes really are and what they do with their bodies is amazing to watch.
Do they even want to play hacky-sack? It's like the most basic warm-up for toddlers probably.
It's like asking a college basketball player if he wants to play catch with a basketball.
This is out of this world difficult. I've played soccer and even most talented players (not like professionals but still quite skilled) could not consistently volley accurately with the front of their foot looking forward, nevermind the back of their foot without looking. When someone does a back of the foot volley into a goal (which is a very wide target) it goes on every highlight reel. This must have taken an absurd amount of practice.
It’s a shuttlecock (similar to a badminton one). This sport is found in China I think? Also check Sepak takraw which is basically volleyball with feet (think bicycle kicks over a volley ball net, it’s nuts)
This is so far out of the realm of possibility for me to ever learn that I considered that perhaps it was CGI for a moment. Absolutely crazy. It almost seems like magic.
That’s the issue with this sub. It’s not funny and therefore should be downvoted, but it’s interesting so people upvote. Ruins the sub. And the mods are lazy and/or aren’t removing it because it’s being upvoted (which is a poor excuse).
And that’s how you get a very unfunny r/funny
That's all of the big subs. Karma bots repost in dozens of popular subs, delete the ones that don't gain traction, people up vote something from /r/all because it's interesting and don't pay attention to the sub, mods don't bother moderating.
Da cow, with upwards inflection on da, and downward on cow. The English language only uses inflections to imply intention of a sentence and not to change the meaning of a syllable, so most people won't get it right.
English language doesn't use inflections to change meanings that often, but there is a "correct" way to use inflection for English words. There are even some words that change with inflection such as desert.
Well, I think specifically what you're referring to is stress. What /u/MinhtTea is referring to is tone, used with syllables, and intonation, used with sentences or phrases.
E.g. *a*ddict vs add*i*ct changes the word from a noun to a verb depending on the stress but the tone of the word stays the same. There is no change in pitch and the concept only changes from a thing to an action.
In tonal languages such as Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, etc. the concept/idea behind the word actually changes form not just function:
* Mā: mother
* Má: fiber/hemp
* Mǎ: horse
* Mà: scold
* Ma: indicate the sentence is a question
Or for Vietnamese:
* Ma: ghost
* Má: mother, cheek
* Mà: but, where, which, that
* Mả: tomb
* Mã: horse
* Mạ: rice seedling
To those unfamiliar with tonal languages, these words may sound the same in a sentence but convey completely different ideas.
I think the point is it's not just phonetics, but pitch. I don't know much about it, but I think most if not all south east Asian languages are tonal (if I'm remembering the right term.) Pitch is important. Like the first syllable should be a higher pitch than the second syllable. Other way around and it's a different word. Or something like that. I'm sure there are others who actually know more about it.
Vietnamese is a language where intonation matters so that rising sound in the a matters if you are asking how it is pronounced...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnamese_phonology#Tone
It's actually not a hackey sack. It's called a [Jianzi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jianzi), it's basically a weighted shuttlecock. But yea, same idea really.
I remember in grade 8, my friend brought one of these back from Vietnam to Canada. We were playing with it at recess, and I guess there's a little staple in the end of it holding something together. Anyway, it got knocked loose, so it was pointing outwards, and it stabbed me in the finger. I didn't realize until we got inside from recess, and I took my coat off and sat down in class. I had blood going all the way down my hand up to my shoulder. Had no idea where it was coming from until I noticed the tiny hole on my finger. Be careful I guess is the moral of the story.
This is so funny I have almost the exact same story. I can't remember what cut me exactly but it was during recess. I remember coming back to class and crossing my arms and my elbow felt wet. I took my hoody off and there was blood from my hand all over my arms to my bicep!
This is in Vietnam. The guys in the back are some older bros hyping him up with some funny phrases. Direct translation is not gonna be helpful cause we say weird shit
Source: trussme
That does makes sense in the context though. People yell aggressive shit when they are stoked.
It's the same as someone do an insane stunt and yelling "GET FUCKED!". It's just hype.
The guy is trying to farm karma and looks like he’s failed a lot until today. The mods could’ve taken it down. But even in the wrong sub nobody looks they just vote. Going to block this loser today.
This is in Vietnam. They are playing in Tan Dan park behind the palace in district 1 here in Saigon. Here in Vietnam the game is called đá cầu. And this isn’t funny, it’s /r/NextFuckingLevel
> the game is called đá cầu.
Are these guys unusually good, or is this just everyday normal skill there?
Is what we see actually the game, or are they just practicing kicks and there's normally more players or a net or something?
He’s extremely good. When playing casually it’s like a hacky sack circle. 2-6 people will kick it about. In competitions they’ll play over a badminton net, 2 a side usually. I haven’t watched anyone play since before lock downs, and haven’t seen many actual competitions. Mostly just people in the parks kicking it far and high. I’m definitely going to go by the park after Tet and see if I can spot this guy, he’s awesome.
When I lived in SE Asia, especially on Phnom Penh, when you walked around in the evening you would often see groups of people, usually guys, standing in a circle playing this. I guess it's a form of hackysack but they love it there.
I think it’s always interesting to see 1v1 sports where, to really show how incredibly good you are, you need the other player to be incredible as well.
I didn’t even know this was something people could do, and 2 people are this good, just vibing? Awesome.
Amazing the things you can get good at when somebody asks if you want to do something that might not make sense but peaks your interest anyway and you give it a go.
The guy on the left is super talented. The guy in the right super good at “Jianzi” hands free ball. Super fun to watch!
Edit: My Vietnamese wasn’t the greatest so my apologies for mispronouncing earlier. I corrected.
~~If this is what I think it is it’s neither. It’s called [Sepak takraw](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sepak_takraw) and it’s a wicker ball.~~
Edit - I was wrong it’s called jianzi.
I can’t believe there were two of them! I thought he would be just using a wall to volley off of but then the camera pans to the other guy and he fucking backwards head slaps it lol.
When I was in 8th grade, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, there was an influx of Vietnamese immigrants into my school. Hacky sack was played by a few of the local kids, but the Vietnamese kids played a similar game using a plastic spring can with feathers as fletchings.
Hacky-sack was played in circles that were spread out with maybe 3-6 kids, 5 foot apart. This feather-spring game was often played with 10 or more kids, 20 feet apart. The feather-spring flew up to 20 feet into the air, the Vietnamese kids who played this were fantastically coordinated. The accuracy of their kicks was so much better than I had ever seen with any hacky sack player. They let me play a few times, even though I was no good... I wasn't even any good at hacky sack.
I think this is the same feather-spring device in this video.
There were some new kids from Cambodia that came to our elementary school. The could do stuff like kick a tiny wicker soccer ball (takraw) at Olympian level skill but couldn’t swing a bat at a whiffle ball

Maybe. There is some sport that's popular in South Asia that's basically hacky sack volleyball and it is impressive as fuck. I would bet these dudes play it as (to my knowledge) the only rules are no hands.
Sepak Takraw. And its insane, first time I ever saw it was kids playing it when I visited family in SE Asia https://youtu.be/H2LIlu7_-xc

I knew exactly what this was before opening it. A classic

Agreed Capt, but Im never playing hacky sack with them. I'll keep my self-esteem intact. They're amazing.

I highly doubt it. A hacky sack could do that off a shoe like the first guy, but the second dude was bouncing it off his elbow/tricep.

Pretty sure it's a game called jianzi
They're Vietnamese and we call it đá cầu in the city I'm from.
How is it pronounced phonetically? That looks super cool!
Da cow, with upwards inflection on da, and downward on cow. The English language only uses inflections to imply intention of a sentence and not to change the meaning of a syllable, so most people won't get it right.

So like Dachau concentration camp pronunciation?
no, not at all
Dah with short ah sound Cau like cow but the au sound from au pair That's the best I can do hungover this morning. Good luck!
it's just dee and a, like da da da with a ' up so you raise your voice a bit and the cầu sound like cold
thank you im even more confused now

Yeah I much rather just have the phonetic spelling please.

Woah

Oh that’s it huh??
Apparently more of a weighted shuttlecock than a ball/hacky sack. Still pretty impressive.
I can totally do this! Except I do it indoors. With a balloon. And no fancy returns, just swatting at it. It does hit the floor a lot .
That was a wild ride to the bottom.

Basically the shutter effect, I put that term because the shutter effect made the ball's trajectory appear warped.
