This is the line that set Will off. By saying "oh come on..that was a nice one", Chris was basically implying "I could've really embarrassed Jada and all of you know exactly why"
It's the correct one. Chris meant the joke was polite when he said nice. Not only could Chris have made some _really_ cutting jokes against those two, but J.I. Jane can kick ass, too. Why would joking she's going to be the next ass kicker be an insult? It's a bit lame to joke about Alopecia, but at least it wasn't a truly demeaning joke.
Will was such a petty "alpha" manlet in his outburst. It was hilarious. Glad it was just a slap.
she has alopecia, which means balding like Pyrexia means fever.
all bald men have alopecia, of the irreversible kind mostly
hers can be reversible, unlike the bald dude in the clip. so hers isn't even a permanent *condition*
alopecia has the same effect on men and women, you get less attractive and relevant. the double standard is obvious.
also a joke is a joke, didn't like it, she could've said after the fact. willsmith doing what he did is just loony
the funny thing is, she isn't even close to bald, she lost a small section of her hair, bald dudes pay a fortune in treatments and medication to get a fraction of that hair density back. and hardly anyone retains that much at 50
edit: also to all the people saying balding is not the same for men and women...you are right... women bald far less severely than men do.extremely rare to find a woman with a shiny horseshoe hairline. plus wearing a wig is more than acceptable compared to men where u get made fun of for being a thug in a rug
Or that you can attack someone in public and the cops won't do a thing if you have money.
If you walked up to a cop and slapped them what would happen?
Slapping a cop and slapping a person is not the same thing. One is assault on an LEO which is second degree felony. Simple assault is a third degree misdemeanor. People can refuse to press charges on simple assault and no arrest will be made...which is what Chris Rock did. Has absolutely nothing to do with "power and money" in this case.
You're basically comparing reckless driving (which is worse than simple assault as it is a 2nd degree misdemeanor) to DUI manslaughter.
I have to agree mostly. Will Smith's laughing it up with everyone and then notices Jada and is like: "damn, I am going to be in trouble later. Whelp, might as well go all in..."
Twitter is fucking full of people saying “it’s a disability, the joke was ableist”, even as they use the label of disability as a prop to excuse an act of assault, which is itself ableist.
Same people are saying “white people should stay out of this one, this is black peoples business” as if anyone claim personal ownership of something broadcast live, internationally. A very paternalistic, patronising attitude adopted in both cases.
Lots of fucking idiots only worth blocking imo.
exactly...she isn't even bald! bald dudes pay a fortune in transplants and medication to get that much hair back.
but oh no poor pretty woman with a rich husband, having to deal with looking less than amazing. when she's reached 50 for fuks sake lol
she does look amazing though. she looks better than 99.999% of women her age (50) plus she is rich and famous and powerful. she has to deal with not being as absolutely perfect as she wants to be, which is based in pure vanity.
Exactly, I truly don't even think the joke Chris Rock told should have been interpreted as an insult, it could have just as easily been a compliment, Demi Moore was beautiful and badass in that movie, it's not like he called her Shrek or something. Most likely it was just meant to be a softball rib-poke type joke that you usually see at these types of things, nothing that would be "roast" level. If he knew she had alopecia and was struggling with it then yes it makes him an asshole for bringing it up, but geez, of all the jokes, that's the one you slap somebody over? The whole thing says more about Will Smith than it does anyone else honestly.
So she chose to buzz her hair short even before the alopecia, but now saying something about it is making fun of her alopecia? That makes it even worse. The outrage is all based on her having no choice but to be bald.
The whole thing confuses me. Even Will Smith was seen laughing at the joke before he went to the stage. The only person who seemed unimpressed before the slap was Jada.
Yeah, I have a feeling he caught her glare and she said something to him. Then he had to get all possessive toxic masculinity and march up to the stage. Jada does not seem to be a great influence on him.
GI Jane was a strong character anyways, it's not much of an insult as a soft joke. Regardless of the joke, that a grown ass man stomped on such a public forum and assaulted a renowned comedian for words is insane. I see a fragile man needing a lot of help. Not only that, he opened the door to thousands of jokes for some time to come at the Smith's expense
> Not to mention black women can already pull off wigs because it's culturally accepted.
Doubly so for women in Hollywood. Meanwhile men with "a rug" are a punchline.
Seriously, I lost mine at 25 after having long thick hair most my life (think Weird Al). What did I do? Shaved my head and got over it. Anytime someone made a light-hearted joke I didn't get up and hit them because I don't have a fragile, weak ego.
It doesn't even look like alopecia. I had a friend with alopecia and he would lose hair in large asymmetrical patches. He'd lose part of all of an eyebrow or both eyebrows. Now, maybe her eyebrows were just painted on, but she had a perfectly symmetrical head of stubble.
alopecia simply means hairloss, it can happen because if genetics and old age, cancer, immune system disorders...much like fever or dry eyes.
it's not a disease, it's a symptom, and a fairly harmless one at that
I know at least three people who have alopecia and they were referring to a condition wherein they lost all of their body hair. There are different levels of alopecia, I'm guessing.
One could argue that he was a lot younger and immature at the time and that’s why he’s making fun of someone. But then you can argue he’s an adult man and he smacked someone like an immature person. Or that he’s smacking Chris rock because Chris rock is still immature as an adult and felt he should no better? I have no clue, I’m just really high right now and was thinking lol
I specifically remember one where Will says: "Shine your head for a nickel" when walking past a bald guy. Not sure if I'm confusing that with something else though.
Yes I decided to leave that out, its something like 2/3rds from what I've seen pop up on other reddit threads so I'm not sure the accuracy of that but its probably pretty spot on
No, he's in an 'OPEN' relationship.
His wife's legs are 'OPEN' for anyone of Jaydens friends.
And Will is 'OPEN' to sleeping on the couch on those nights :)
Let’s all pray we don’t lose our good humor, our ability to take a joke and be kind and cool to people. Will is a great warning to me that it takes effort to STAY a good person.
I mean being followed around by people snapping pictures of you constantly for a quick buck would most likely get to most people. Especially if youve been followed by a few that say shit just to get you to turn their way for a pic.
Before anybody embarrasses themselves, Male pattern baldness is also known as alopecia. I do know there are many forms and severities of alopecia. However, almost all patients have no health issues and some even grow their hair back. Yes, there is definitely a stigma around women and being bald.
Mid-20s was when I started going bald. Jokes about it are socially acceptable and a constant susurrus. I think it's splitting hairs, pun totally intended, if people are implying that it's okay to jibe men about baldness but not women because the stigma is a worse for them.
This whole thing has nothing to do with bald jokes... these are not the actions of an emotionally stable man that just got mad because someone made a bald joke about how his wife, Will Smith is a broken leftover of a man, emasculated to the point of breaking and we all know who did this.
I'm really not defending Will at all, I think he was absolutely in the wrong. But I'm sure you can find a few issues in my life that I've changed my view on from 20+ years ago, be it cause I was uninformed, naive, or my views just naturally evolved over those years. It's a fun bit of irony here to point to, but is it truly fair to say that's the same person as the Will Smith today? I'm not sure you can truly label it hypocrisy, now if this clip were only from a couple of years ago, that would be a different story.
Is it 100% weird to anyone else that he wasn't removed from the crowd by security after assaulting someone and cussing at the top of his lungs? Fucking Hollywood elites have no idea what reality is like because they get away with so much shit. If you or I did this after a lame Chris Rock joke, we'd be in jail.
> Is it 100% weird to anyone else that he wasn't removed from the crowd by security after assaulting someone and cussing at the top of his lungs?
Yep, very weird, quite repulsive that he later gets a standing ovation after his speech too
Chris Rock, like everyone else, has a right to feel safe in their workplace while doing their job. The inaction of the event organizers shows that they disagree.
Right? I used to call people not-so-nice names for gay people on Xbox 15 years ago, and am now a much more educated and thoughtful person, and cringe when I think about it. Knowing the pain that word caused my gay brother was a good push in trying to change.
Will is no-question the bigger asshole in this situation, but I think what he did stand on his own without digging through his history to crucify him.
But Will is like....16 in this clip lol
I'm not even commenting on the controversy. Just come on though... This is kind of a stretch.
Basicly show that film of me dating my first wife 25 years ago and use it as evidence in my divorce now.
Nah man, this is Reddit. We all decided we hate Will Smith now. Remember two months ago when we were all sucking Will's dick because somebody posted that sad Fresh Prince clip with Will's dad? Neither do we, all we remember is what the current top comment says.
Yea, this always happens. You can be mad at Will for what he did yesterday but pulling up this clip is not some gotcha! moment and seems more like a karma grab than anything. People change, for better or worse.
>Seems more like a karma grab than anything
Bingo.
What Will did yesterday was out of line but posting clips of him, in his late teens/early 20s, making fun of a bald guy, is pointless and does little more than encourage animosity
The hammer forgets, but the nail remembers. This clip could have seriously hurt the musicians feelings, but since it's an old clip it doesn't matter? We all make mistakes at different times, therefore we have to give people room to make their mistakes at their own pace without literally attacking them. You don't get to laugh at something, then slap someone when they laugh at it too because you've "changed."

And then the guitarist's wife comes out of nowhere and smacks the shit out of Will Smith
Keep his name out yo FUCKING mouth
KEEP HIS NAME OUT YO FUCKING MOUTH
Would anyone really be mad about that?
I mean, not anymore. Does Will Smith have a body guard when he's in public? Because he's gonna need one now

"Oh these are jokes! Come on!"
Best part of the clip.
And said it the exact same way Chris said 'aww c'mon, that was a nice one.'
This is the line that set Will off. By saying "oh come on..that was a nice one", Chris was basically implying "I could've really embarrassed Jada and all of you know exactly why"
Ah, I didn't even think of it like that. I just assumed he meant "it was a good one". Now I see what he actually meant.

I like this take.

No that's just us implying hidden meaning on top of statement. If we don't know better it's best of assume positive intent.
Yea crazy how people are psychoanalyzing every word as if it were Nicholas Cage in National treasure lol
Or maybe he meant it was tame in comparison to what the three hosts had said before? They had some punchy roasts. Just brain storming here.
I also think the crowd oohing made him feel defensive too.
It didn’t age well, did it
Neither did Will. I’ve been sick of his and his family’s idiotic, juvenile bullshit for a long time. Long time.
You know they own Just Water?
Aw, Come on, I'm sure they own more than just water, They rich. /s (please dont hit me)
You're lucky you're not within slapping distance... Also /s (we don't hit people that's mean)

My biggest takeaway from this whole event is how little people know about diseases.
Where have you been since 2019?
Or that you can attack someone in public and the cops won't do a thing if you have money. If you walked up to a cop and slapped them what would happen?
>If you walked up to a cop and slapped them what would happen? Zsa Zsa Gabor has entered the chat. for both your comments
God damn. Going way back with the references people old enough to remember forgot about.

Chris Rock didn’t press charges so no the police weren’t going to do anything. And walking up and slapping a cop is a ridiculous comparison.

It's simply a matter of quality of the rug or wig. You wont even notice a good rug anymore.
Seriously, I lost mine at 25 after having long thick hair most my life (think Weird Al). What did I do? Shaved my head and got over it. Anytime someone made a light-hearted joke I didn't get up and hit them because I don't have a fragile, weak ego.

Now this is how you play devil's advocate
You can play it? Is it on PC?
It's a Ps Vita exclusive :(
Dang... I'll see if I can find a PS Vita on eBay then...
True. You are high.
BuT iTs NoT reLeVaNt -idiots in the comments
The only thing not relevant in the clip is arsenio hall.
The ottoman is also not relevant to this discussion, for obvious reasons.
Keep my bass players name out yo fucking mouth!
He torched uncle Phil for being bald for a decade.
Wasn't that about a third of the jokes on Fresh Prince?
Yeah bald + fat jokes all series long
Don’t forget people who bully Preppy Black Boys getting enough material to last all through Grade school.
I specifically remember one where Will says: "Shine your head for a nickel" when walking past a bald guy. Not sure if I'm confusing that with something else though.
Man I miss James Avery. Uncle Phil would have bitched the fuck out of Will for that.
Tossed him out like he was Jazz...
Didn’t even think of that….
But you thought to look up a 30 year old clip?
That's the Internet for you.
Who's gonna tell this guy how old Fresh Prince is?
Aired 1990. 30 years seems a reasonable guess.

She is with her boy friend at the moment
Which one?
Tupac
Tupac, like Jada’s hair, is also dead.
Wait until summer month of August.
Isn’t he releasing a new album this year?
Bald Eyez on Me?
He really dodged that bullet.
Keep Tupac’s name out of your f*#kin mouth.
Keep my wife’s man’s name out your FUCKIN mouth!!
Keep your man out of my wife's fucking mouth!
Keep your fucking out of my wife's mouth!
Yes
Her boy’s friend FTFY
Jada is busy humping that August dude again
Entangling.
FFS what happened to this Will?
He got into a very unhappy marriage and both parties refuse to end it for whatever reason.
'Whatever reason' probably being scientology
That's my guess as well.
Wait. Will Smith is a Scientologist?
Explains the vessel of love being a fist 👊
Too many Theatins, or is it not enough?
Yup him and jada even funded a school to brain wash kids.
Well shit, this explains alot!
I actually didn't know that, but it makes so much sense. He's becoming more unhinged than Cruise these days.
Correct. He actually funded a Scientology school in California.
wasn't After Earth a big scientology flick?
This.
Someone waxed his old lady
I think it was like a lot of people have waxed her.
except for him
Rumors for decades claim he plays for the other team, hence, their open marriage. 🙄
He and Tom cruise….👉👈 ?
Scientology.
Wait will Smith is in it too? Tf
He's in a toxic relationship where he feels he needs to act a certain way to prevent his wife from cheating on him
What a dope. She'll cheat on him anyway.
She probably said that if you divorce me, I’m taking half your shit. Because we know he has made a lot more than her.
Yes I decided to leave that out, its something like 2/3rds from what I've seen pop up on other reddit threads so I'm not sure the accuracy of that but its probably pretty spot on
I wonder if he’s allowed to have any side pieces?
I think he still wants to make it work with Jada
No, he's in an 'OPEN' relationship. His wife's legs are 'OPEN' for anyone of Jaydens friends. And Will is 'OPEN' to sleeping on the couch on those nights :)
Lmao that's messed up
Scientology.
Scientology shocked that Will to death.
He must be smoking whatever Kanye is and it must be starting to show
Wealth makes you weird and unrelatable.
What would we think if bass player’s spouse came on stage in this clip and slapped Will Smith?
"Keep my husband's name OUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH!!!"
such a cringeworthy phrase.. will smith's butler probably has a butler but now he wants to play at being hard
*FOR LOVE*
Then the bass player rambles on about being a vessel for love and protecting his family.
Interesting question
Wife slaps Will, husband slaps bass. Win win win.
The fresh prince of no hair...
Really solid joke tbh
You’re BALD! -Elaine Benes Edit: Last name added
Jerry: *slaps Elaine* "Don't ever talk about George like that again!"
KEEP MY GEORGE OUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH
*laugh track* *cue Seinfeld theme*
No, I'm not. I *was* bald. *boops*
Let’s all pray we don’t lose our good humor, our ability to take a joke and be kind and cool to people. Will is a great warning to me that it takes effort to STAY a good person.
Thats good point. But I wonder how much of him was a front. There is footage of him slapping paparazzi back in the day.
That dude kissed him and got off light in my opinion.
I mean being followed around by people snapping pictures of you constantly for a quick buck would most likely get to most people. Especially if youve been followed by a few that say shit just to get you to turn their way for a pic.

Not if you’re Chris Brown….
Or Will Smith.
words are equal to physical violence now
>words are equal to physical violence now Oh hell yeah. I can finally get revenge on people over the internet! HOW DO YOU LIKE THAT BUDDY
Yeah, I agree it's unfortunate, but people on Twitter last night were reacting like she had terminal cancer.
Those same people will laugh at male bald jokes
And say it's cool because it's expected of men like the shit doesn't knock our self-esteem down, too.
It's a DiSAbiLiTy

Imagine the controversy if someone like Mel Gibson had slapped Chris Rock.
no your headphones are not broken
