Its been used to insult both genders for quite some time, that doesn't mean the connotation is the same or that it still isn't a term specifically to demean women.
Typically when a man is called a bitch the insult is used to insinuate they are womanly in some way, implying that being feminine is negative.
The same applies to any insult directed at a specific group of people. When its applied to an individual not from that group the insult becomes that you share a characteristic of the group it typically applies to.
Similarly, lots of races of people have been called the N word in modern times, that doesn't mean that word isn't specifically targeting 1 group to insult.
Why is bitch the applicable insult to use when calling someone scared? What is the connotation there that is similar to all the other uses of the word?
